The Zeno effect in a quantum computer
Abstract: We present a simulation of the quantum Zeno effect (QZE) on a quantum computer as an example of the relation between this effect and the bang-bang decoupling method in control theory. Although the true QZE can not be strictly implemented on a quantum computer where all the operations, except the final measurements, must be unitary ones, we can simulate it by coupling the system to a number of anci… ▽ More

Spectrum of localized states in fermionic chains with defect and adiabatic charge pum**

Asymptotic freedom and higher derivative gauge theories
Abstract: The ultraviolet completion of gauge theories by higher derivative terms can dramatically change their behavior at high energies. The requirement of asymptotic freedom imposes very stringent constraints that are only satisfied by a small family of higher derivative theories. Sublogarithmic behaviour of the entanglement entropy in fermionic chains

Boundary G/G theory and topological Poisson-Lie sigma model
Abstract: We study a boundary version of the gauged WZW model with a Poisson-Lie group G as the target. The Poisson-Lie structure of G is used to define the Wess-Zumino term of the action on surfaces with boundary. We clarify the relation of the model to the topological Poisson sigma model with the dual Poisson-Lie group G^* as the target and show that the phase space of the theory on a strip is essential… ▽ More

Unstable Bundles in Quantum Field Theory
Abstract: The relation between connections on 2-dimensional manifolds and holomorphic bundles provides a new perspective on the role of classical gauge fields in quantum field theory in two, three and four dimensions. In particular we show that there is a close relation between unstable bundles and monopoles, sphalerons and instantons. Some of these classical configurations emerge as nodes of quantum vacu… ▽ More

Vacuum structure of CP^N sigma models at theta=pi
Abstract: We show that parity symmetry is not spontaneously broken in the CP^N sigma model for any value of N when the coefficient of the $θ$--term becomes $θ=π$ (mod $2π$). The result follows from a non-perturbative analysis of the nodal structure of the vacuum functional $ψ_0(z)$. The dynamical role of sphalerons turns out to be very important for the argument. The result introduces severe constraints o… ▽ More

Vacuum Nodes in QCD at $θ=π$: Exact Results
Abstract: We show that the vacuum functional of 3+1 dimensional non-abelian gauge theories vanishes for some classical field configurations $ψ_0(A)=0$ when the coefficient of the CP violating $θ$--term becomes $θ=π$ (mod. $2π$). Some of these classical configurations are explicitly identified and include sphalerons. The results shed new light into the non-perturbative behavior of non-abelian gauge theorie… ▽ More

Unitarity of the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard connection and the Bethe Ansatz for the elliptic Hitchin systems
Abstract: We work out finite-dimensional integral formulae for the scalar product of genus one states of the group $G$ Chern-Simons theory with insertions of Wilson lines. Assuming convergence of the integrals, we show that unitarity of the elliptic Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard connection with respect to the scalar product of CS states is closely related to the Bethe Ansatz for the commuting Hamiltonian… ▽ More

Elliptic Wess-Zumino-Witten Model from Elliptic Chern-Simons Theory
Abstract: This letter continues the program aimed at analysis of the scalar product of states in the Chern-Simons theory. It treats the elliptic case with group SU(2). The formal scalar product is expressed as a multiple finite dimensional integral which, if convergent for every state, provides the space of states with a Hilbert space structure. The convergence is checked for states with a single Wilson lin… ▽ More
