We investigate the relation between the emergence of a dilaton in gapped (confining) field theories, and the presence of either complex fixed points or instabilities in the strongly coupled dynamics in two classes of bottom-up holographic models. We demonstrate that in one of the two classes there is a critical line of first-order phase transitions (at zero temperature) that terminates at a critical point. We calculate the mass spectrum of fluctuations of the associated regular gravity backgrounds, which we interpret as bound states in the dual field theories. In proximity to the second-order phase transition, we find a parametrically light scalar state, and its composition leads us to identify it as a dilaton.

In a previous paper two of us (D.M. and A.Z.) proposed that a vast class of gravitational extremization problems in holography can be formulated in terms of the equivariant volume of the internal geometry, or of the cone over it. We substantiate this claim by analysing supergravity solutions corresponding to branes partially or totally wrapped on a four-dimensional orbifold, both in M-theory as well as in type II supergravities. We show that our approach recovers the relevant gravitational central charges/free energies of several known supergravity solutions and can be used to compute these also for solutions that are not known explicitly. Moreover, we demonstrate the validity of previously conjectured gravitational block formulas for M5 and D4 branes. In the case of M5 branes we make contact with a recent approach based on localization of equivariant forms, constructed with Killing spinor bilinears.

Both phases exhibit a non-zero baryon density thus providing a first example of baryonic matter in a confining string dual that does not require the introduction of flavor branes. We argue that the confining phase is a baryon superfluid, while the deconfined phase has non-zero baryon magnetization.

The theory possesses a global $\text{U}(1)$ symmetry under which magnetic monopoles are charged. We introduce both temperature and an external magnetic field for monopoles and find that there are deconfinement phase transitions as any of the two is increased, supporting monopole condensation as the possible mechanism for confinement. We find that the transition as the magnetic field is increased is second order, providing the first example in holographic duals of a deconfinement transition which is not first order. We also uncover a rich structure in the phase diagram, with a triple point and a critical point where a line of first order transitions end.

Such spaces belong to the eight Thurston model geometries, out of which we consider the cases Nil and SL$(2,\mathbb{R})$. In the former, we use the recipe of arXiv:hep-th/0304064 to directly rederive the solution that was obtained by Gutowski and Reall in arXiv:hep-th/0401042 as a scaling limit from a spherical black hole. With the same techniques, the first example of a black hole with SL$(2,\mathbb{R})$ horizon is constructed, which is rotating and one quarter BPS. The physical properties of this solution are discussed, and it is shown that in the near-horizon limit it boils down to the geometry of arXiv:hep-th/0401042, with a supersymmetry enhancement to one half. Dimensional reduction to $D=4$ gives a new solution with hyperbolic horizon to the t$^3$ model that carries both electric and magnetic charges. Moreover, we show how to get a nonextremal rotating Nil black hole by applying a certain scaling limit to Kerr-AdS$_5$ with two equal rotation parameters, which consists in zooming onto the north pole of the S$^2$ over which the S$^3$ is fibered, while boosting the horizon velocity effectively to the speed of light.

We construct new supersymmetric $\mathrm{AdS}_2\times \mathbb{M}_4$ solutions of $D=6$ gauged supergravity, where $\mathbb{M}_4$ are certain four-dimensional orbifolds. After uplifting to massive type IIA supergravity these correspond to the near-horizon limit of a system of $N$ D4-branes and $N_f$ D8-branes wrapped on $\mathbb{M}_4$. In one class of solutions $\mathbb{M}_4 = Σ_{\mathrm{g}}\ltimesΣ$ is a spindle fibred over a smooth Riemann surface of genus $\mathrm{g}>1$, while in another class $\mathbb{M}_4 = Σ\ltimesΣ$ is a spindle fibred over another spindle. Both classes can be thought of as orbifold generalizations of Hirzebruch surfaces and, in the second case, we describe the solutions in terms of toric geometry. We show that the entropy associated with these solutions is reproduced by extremizing an entropy function obtained by gluing gravitational blocks, using a general recipe for orbifolds that we propose. We also discuss how our prescription can be used to define an off-shell central charge whose extremization reproduces the gravitational central charge of analogous $\mathrm{AdS}_3\times \mathbb{M}_4$ solutions of $D=7$ gauged supergravity, arising from wrap** M5-branes on $\mathbb{M}_4$.

We construct supersymmetric AdS$_4\timesΣ$ solutions of $D=6$ gauged supergravity, where $Σ$ is a two-dimensional orbifold known as a spindle. These uplift to solutions of massive type IIA supergravity using a general prescription, that we describe. We argue that these solutions correspond to the near-horizon limit of a system of $N_f$ D8-branes, together with $N$ D4-branes wrapped on a spindle, embedded as a holomorphic curve inside a Calabi-Yau three-fold. The dual field theories are $d=3$, ${\cal N }= 2$ SCFTs that arise from a twisted compactification of the $d=5$, ${\cal N}=1$ $USp(2N)$ gauge theory. We show that the holographic free energy associated to these solutions is reproduced by extremizing an off-shell free energy, that we conjecture to arise in the large $N$ limit of the localized partition function of the $d=5$ theories on $S^3\timesΣ$. We formulate a universal proposal for a class of off-shell free energies, whose extremization reproduces all previous results for branes wrapped on spindles, as well as on genus $\mathrm{g}$ Riemann surfaces $Σ_{\mathrm{g}}$. We further illustrate this proposal discussing D4-branes wrapped on $Σ\timesΣ_{\mathrm{g}}$, for which we present a supersymmetric AdS$_2\timesΣ\timesΣ_{\mathrm{g}}$ solution of $D=6$ gauged supergravity along with the associated entropy function.

We extend our solutions to include D7-branes, and show that a subclass of these solutions can be interpreted in terms of D3-D5-NS5 defect branes embedded in a 5d fixed point theory. The holographic description consists of $N_{\rm{\tiny f}}$ D7-brane probes in AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ with electric and instantonic fields on their worldvolume. These correspond to fundamental strings and D3-branes dissolved on the D7-branes, respectively. Here we use this description to determine the spectrum of mesonic excitations. As expected for a charged superfluid we find non-relativistic, massless Goldstone modes. We also find extra ungapped modes that are not associated to the breaking of any global symmetries but to the supersymmetric nature of the ground state. If the quark mass is much smaller than the scale of spontaneous symmetry breaking a pseudo-Goldstone boson is also present. We highlight some new features that appear only for $N_{\rm{\tiny f}}> 2$. We show that, in the generic case of unequal R-symmetry charges, the dissolved strings and D3-branes blow up into a D5-brane supertube stretched between the D7-branes.

We consider black holes in five-dimensional $N=2$ $\text{U}(1)$-gauged supergravity coupled to vector multiplets, with horizons that are homogeneous but not isotropic. We write down the equations of motion for electric and magnetic ansätze, and solve them explicitely for the case of pure gauged supergravity with magnetic $\text{U}(1)$ field strength and Sol horizon. The thermodynamics of the resulting solution, which exhibits anisotropic scaling, is discussed. If the horizon is compactified, the geometry approaches asymptotically a torus bundle over AdS$_3$. Furthermore, we prove a no-go theorem that states the nonexistence of supersymmetric, static, Sol-invariant, electrically or magnetically charged solutions with spatial cross-sections modelled on solve\-geometry. Finally, we study the attractor mechanism for extremal static non-BPS black holes with nil- or solvegeometry horizons. It turns out that there are no such attractors for purely electric field strengths, while in the magnetic case there are attractor geometries, where the values of the scalar fields on the horizon are computed by extremization of an effective potential $V_{\text{eff}}$, which contains the charges as well as the scalar potential of the gauged supergravity theory. The entropy density of the extremal black hole is then given by the value of $V_{\text{eff}}$ in the extremum.

We derive exact relations to all orders in the $α'$ expansion for the charges of a bound system of heterotic strings, solitonic 5-branes and, optionally, a Kaluza-Klein monopole. The expressions, which differ from those of the zeroth-order supergravity approximation, coincide with the values obtained when only the corrections of quadratic order in curvature are included. Our computation relies on the consistency of string theory as a quantum theory of gravity; the relations follow from the matching of the Wald entropy with the microscopic degeneracy. In the heterotic frame, the higher-curvature terms behave as delocalized sources that introduce a shift between near-horizon and asymptotic charges. On the other hand, when described in terms of lower-dimensional effective fields, the solution carries constant charges over space which coincide with those of the asymptotic heterotic fields. In addition, we describe why the Gauss-Bonnet term, which only captures a subset of the relevant corrections of quadratic order in curvature, in some cases succeeds to reproduce the correct value for the Wald entropy, while fails in others.

We discuss the thermodynamics of these solutions, obtain a Christodoulou-Ruffini mass formula, and shew that they obey a first law of thermodynamics and that the product of horizon areas depends on the angular momentum and the magnetic charges only. The glueball spectrum interpolates between these two limiting cases, and for nearly conformal dynamics approaches the result of the Ooguri-Park theory deformed by a relevant operator. In order to elucidate under which circumstances quasi-conformal dynamics leads to the presence of a light pseudo-dilaton, we perform a study of the dependence of the spectrum on the position of a hard-wall IR cutoff and find that, in the present case, the mass of such state is lifted by deep-IR effects.

We place the theory at finite isospin density $n_{\rm \tiny{I}}$ by turning on an isospin chemical potential $μ_{\rm \tiny{I}}=M_{\rm \tiny{q}}$, with $M_{\rm \tiny{q}}$ the quark mass. We also turn on two R-symmetry charge densities $n_1=n_2$. We show that the ground state is a supersymmetric, superfluid, color superconductor, namely a finite-density state that preserves a fraction of supersymmetry in which part of the global symmetries and part of the gauge symmetries are spontaneously broken. The holographic description consists of $N_{\rm \tiny{F}}$ D7-brane probes in $\mbox{AdS}_5 \times \mbox{S}^5$. The symmetry breaking is due to the dissolution of some D3-branes inside the D7-branes triggered by the electric field associated to the isospin charge. The massless spectrum contains Goldstone bosons and their fermionic superpartners. The massive spectrum contains long-lived, mesonic quasi-particles if $n_{\rm \tiny{I}} \ll μ_{\rm \tiny{I}}^3$, and no quasi-particles otherwise. We discuss the possibility that, despite the presence of mass scales and charge densities in the theory, conformal and relativistic invariance arise as emergent symmetries in the infrared.

At high temperature the thermodynamics is directly sensitive to the Landau pole, whereas at low temperature it is not, as expected from effective field theory. At low temperature and sufficiently high charge density we find thermodynamic and dynamic instabilities towards the spontaneous breaking of translation invariance.

We revisit a one-parameter family of three-dimensional gauge theories with known supergravity duals. We show that three infrared behaviors are possible. For generic values of the parameter, the theories exhibit a mass gap but no confinement, meaning no linear quark-antiquark potential; for one limiting value of the parameter the theory flows to an infrared fixed point; and for another limiting value it exhibits both a mass gap and confinement. Theories close to these limiting values exhibit quasi-conformal and quasi-confining dynamics, respectively. Eleven-dimensional supergravity provides a simple, geometric explanation of these features.

Holography for UV-incomplete gauge theories is important but poorly understood. A paradigmatic example is $d=4$, $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills coupled to $N_f$ quark flavors, which possesses a Landau pole at a UV scale $Λ_{LP}$. The dual gravity solution exhibits a UV singularity at a finite proper distance along the holographic direction. Despite this, holographic renormalization can be fully implemented via analytic continuation to an AdS solution. The presence of a UV cut-off manifests itself in several interesting ways. At energies $E \ll Λ_{LP}$ no pathologies appear, as expected from effective field theory. In contrast, at scales $E \lesssim Λ_{LP}$ the gravitational potential becomes repulsive, and at temperatures $T \lesssim Λ_{LP}$ the specific heat becomes negative. Although we focus on $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills with flavor, our qualitative results apply to a much more general class of theories, since they only depend on the fact that the metric near the UV singularity is a hyper-scaling violating metric with exponent $θ> d-1$.

The Higgsing of the gauge group arises from the dissolution of some color branes inside the flavor branes. The dissolved color branes are represented by non-Abelian instantons whose backreaction is also included. The result is a cascading-like solution in which the effective number of color branes varies along the holographic direction. In the three-dimensional case the solution may include an arbitrary number of quasi-conformal (walking) regions.

For massless quarks, the solutions depend non-trivially only on the dimensionless combination $ρ=N_{\textrm{c}}^2 N_{\textrm{q}} / λ^2 N_{\textrm{f}}^4$, with $λ=g_{\textrm{YM}}^2 N_{\textrm{c}}$ the 't Hooft coupling, and describe renormalization group flows between the super Yang-Mills theory in the ultraviolet and a non-relativistic theory in the infrared. The latter is dual to a hyperscaling-violating, Lifshitz-like geometry with dynamical and hyperscaling-violating exponents $z=5$ and $θ=1$, respectively. If $ρ\ll 1$ then at intermediate energies there is also an approximate AdS$_4$ region, dual to a conformal Chern-Simons-Matter theory, in which the flow exhibits quasi-conformal dynamics. At zero temperature we compute the chemical potential and the equation of state and extract the speed of sound. At low temperature we compute the entropy density and extract the number of low-energy degrees of freedom. For quarks of non-zero mass $M_{\textrm{q}}$ the physics depends non-trivially on $ρ$ and $M_{\textrm{q}} N_{\textrm{c}}/λN_{\textrm{f}}$.

We construct black holes with scalar hair in a wide class of four-dimensional N=2 Fayet-Iliopoulos gauged supergravity theories that are characterized by a prepotential containing one free parameter. Considering the truncated model in which only a single real scalar survives, the theory is reduced to an Einstein-scalar system with a potential, which admits at most two AdS critical points and is expressed in terms of a real superpotential. Our solution is static, admits maximally symmetric horizons, asymptotically tends to AdS space corresponding to an extremum of the superpotential, but is disconnected from the Schwarzschild-AdS family. The condition under which the spacetime admits an event horizon is addressed for each horizon topology. It turns out that for hyperbolic horizons the black holes can be extremal. In this case, the near-horizon geometry is AdS_2 x H^2, where the scalar goes to the other, non-supersymmetric, critical point of the potential. Our solution displays fall-off behaviours different from the standard one, due to the fact that the mass parameter $m^2=-2/\ell^2$ at the supersymmetric vacuum lies in a characteristic range $m^2_{BF}\le m^2\le m^2_{\rm BF}+\ell^{-2}$ for which the slowly decaying scalar field is also normalizable. Nevertheless, we identify a well-defined mass for our spacetime, following the prescription of Hertog and Maeda. Quite remarkably, the product of all horizon areas is not given in terms of the asymptotic cosmological constant alone, as one would expect in absence of electromagnetic charges and angular momentum. Our solution shows qualitatively the same thermodynamic behaviour as the Schwarzschild-AdS black hole, but the entropy is always smaller for a given mass and AdS curvature radius. We also find that our spherical black holes are unstable against radial perturbations.

These automatically include a distribution of D5-brane baryon vertices necessary to soak up string charge. The backgrounds are static, preserving eight supersymmetries, an SO(5) global symmetry and symmetry under spatial translations and rotations. We obtain the most general BPS configurations consistent with the symmetries. We show that the solutions to the Type IIB field equations are completely specified by a single function (the dilaton) satisfying a Poisson-like equation in two dimensions. We further find that the equation admits a class of solutions displaying Lifshitz-like scaling with dynamical critical exponent z=7. The equations also admit an asymptotically AdS_5 x S^5 solution deformed by the presence of backreacted string sources that yield a uniform density of heavy quarks in N=4 SYM.

For concreteness we focus on maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills, but our results apply to a larger class of theories with or without supersymmetry. The gravitational solutions describe renormalization group flows towards infrared scaling geometries characterized by fixed dynamical and hyperscaling-violating exponents. The special case $d=5$ yields an $AdS_3 \times \mathbb{R}^4 \times S^4$ geometry upon uplifting to M-theory. We discuss the multitude of physical scales that separate different dynamical regimes along the flows, as well as the validity of the supergravity description. We consider D7-branes probing several classes of Type IIB supergravity backgrounds, and study the classical problem of finding equilibrium configurations for the embedding functions. This is a method employed to model chiral symmetry breaking in the gravity dual of a strongly-coupled, confining gauge theory. We unveil and discuss a new type of phase transition appearing in the gravity systems, which is similar in nature and meaning to bulk phase transitions on the lattice. The existence of this genre of phase transition puts a new, intrinsic limit on the region of parameter space which can be used to study the physics of the dual field theory. We complete the analysis of D7 embeddings in wrapped-D5 supergravity backgrounds, and explain in what cases chiral-symmetry breaking is sensibly modelled by the gravity construction.

We consider two classes of backgrounds of Type IIB supergravity obtained by wrap** D5-branes on a two-cycle inside the conifold. The field theory dual exhibits confinement and, in addition, a region in which the dynamics is walking, at least in the weak sense that the running of the coupling is anomalously slow. We introduce quenched matter in the fundamental, modelled by probe D7-branes which wrap an internal three-dimensional manifold and lie at the equator of the transverse two-sphere. In the space spanned by the remaining internal angle and the radial coordinate the branes admit two embeddings. The first one is U-shaped: the branes merge at some finite value of the radius. The second one is disconnected and extends along the entire radial direction at fixed angular separation. We interpret these two configurations as corresponding to chiral-symmetry breaking and preserving phases, respectively. We present a simple diagnostic tool to examine the classical stability of the embedding, based on the concavity/convexity conditions for the relevant thermodynamic potentials. We use this criterion to show that U-shaped probes that explore the walking region are unstable, hence providing a dynamical origin for the tachyonic mode found in the literature. Whenever this occurs, the disconnected solution becomes favored energetically. We find that in one of the two classes of backgrounds the U-shaped embedding is always unstable, and thus never realised dynamically. Consequently, these models cannot be used to describe chiral-symmetry breaking. In the second category of solutions, our analysis reveals the presence of a first-order phase transition between chiral-symmetry broken and restored phases. Interestingly, this is in the same class that contains a parametrically light scalar in the spectrum of glueballs of the dual field theory.

New interesting features are found that significantly differ from previous results in phenomenological models. We provide a consistent N=4 Kaluza-Klein truncation of type IIB supergravity on general 5-dimensional squashed Sasaki-Einstein manifolds. Our reduction ansatz keeps all and only the supergravity modes dual to the universal gauge sector of the associated conformal theories, via the gauge/gravity correspondence. The reduced 5-dimensional model displays remarkable features: it includes both zero-modes as well as massive iterations of the Kaluza-Klein operators on the internal manifold; it contains tensor fields dual to vectors charged under a non-abelian gauge group; it has a scalar potential with a non-supersymmetric AdS vacuum in addition to the supersymmetric one.

We review the basic notions of compactification in the presence of a background flux. In extra-dimentional models with more than five dimensions, Scherk and Schwarz boundary conditions have to satisfy 't Hooft consistency conditions. Different vacuum configurations can be obtained, depending whether trivial or non-trivial 't Hooft flux is considered. The presence of the "magnetic" background flux provide, in addition, a mechanism for producing four-dimensional chiral fermions. Particularizing to the six-dimensional case, we calculate the one-loop effective potential for a U(N) gauge theory on M4 x T2. We firstly review the well known results of the trivial 't Hooft flux case, where one-loop contributions produce the usual Hosotani dynamical symmetry breaking. Finally we applied our result for describing, for the first time, the one-loop contributions in the non-trivial 't Hooft flux case.

Theories of gravity invariant under those diffeomorphisms generated by transverse vectors, $\pd_\mξ^\m=0$ are considered. Such theories are dubbed transverse, and differ from General Relativity in that the determinant of the metric, $g$, is a transverse scalar. We comment on diverse ways in which these models can be constrained using a variety of observations. Generically, an additional scalar degree of freedom mediates the interaction, so the usual constraints on scalar-tensor theories have to be imposed. If the purely gravitational part is Einstein--Hilbert but the matter action is transverse, the models predict that the three {\em a priori} different concepts of mass (gravitational active and gravitational passive as well as inertial) are not equivalent anymore. These transverse deviations from General Relativity are therefore tightly constrained, actually correlated with existing bounds on violations of the equivalence principle, local violations of Newton's third law and/or violation of Local Position Invariance.

The structure of the divergences for transverse theories of gravity is studied to one-loop order. These theories are invariant only under those diffeomorphisms that enjoy unit Jacobian determinant (TDiff), so that the determinant of the metric transforms as a true scalar instead of a density. Generically, the models include an additional scalar degree of freedom contained in the metric besides the usual spin two component. When the cosmological constant is fine tuned to zero, there are only two theories which are on shell finite, namely the one in which the symmetry is enhanced to the full group of diffeomorphisms, i.e. Einstein's gravity, and another one denoted by WTDiff which enjoys local Weyl invariance. Both of them are free from the additional scalar.

Abstract:
Some models are presented in which the strength of the gravitational coupling of the potential energy relative to the same coupling for the kinetic energy is, in a precise sense, adjustable. The gauge symmetry of these models consists of those coordinate changes with unit jacobian.

Several ways of computing the radiative corrections to the heavy boson masses in Kaluza-Klein theory are discussed. It is argued that only an intrinsically higher dimensional approach embodies all the desired physical properties.

Using six-dimensional quantum electrodynamics ($QED_6$) as an example we study the one-loop renormalization of the theory both from the six and four-dimensional points of view. Our main conclusion is that the properly renormalized four dimensional theory never forgets its higher dimensional origin. In particular, the coefficients of the neccessary extra counterterms in the four dimensional theory are determined in a precise way. We check our results by studying the reduction of $QED_4$ on a two-torus.
