Magnetic structures and spin excitations are studied across the phase diagram of the geometrically frustrated S = 3/2 quantum antiferromagnet Cs2CoBr4 in magnetic fields applied along the magnetic easy axis, using neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering and THz absorption spectroscopy. The data are analyzed, where appropriate, using extended SU (4) linear spin wave theory. A minimal magnetic Hamiltonian is proposed based on measurements in the high field polarized state. It deviates considerably from the previously considered models. Additional dilatometry experiments highlight the importance of magnetoelastic coupling in this system.

Rainfall precipitation maps are usually derived based on the measurements collected by classical weather devices, such as rain gauges and weather stations. This article aims to show the benefits obtained by opportunistic rainfall measurements based on signal strength measurements provided by commercial-grade satellite terminals (e.g., used in TV broadcasting). To assess not only the feasibility of this approach, with significant advantages in terms of capital and operational expenditure, but also improvements in terms of accuracy, we focus on a case study for agricultural applications using a Gaussian-modeled synthetic rain over a specific, real-world test area.

High-resolution neutron and THz spectroscopies are used to study the magnetic excitation spectrum of Cs$_2$CoBr$_4$, a distorted-triangular-lattice antiferromagnet with nearly XY-type anisotropy. What was previously thought of as a broad excitation continuum [Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 087201 (2022)] is shown to be a series of dispersive bound states reminiscent of "Zeeman ladders" in quasi-one-dimensional Ising systems. At wave vectors where inter-chain interactions cancel at the Mean Field level, they can indeed be interpreted as bound finite-width kinks in individual chains. Elsewhere in the Brillouin zone their true two-dimensional structure and propagation are revealed.

We report an excellent realization of the highly non-classical incommensurate spin-density wave (SDW) state in the quantum frustrated antiferromagnetic insulator Cs$_2$CoBr$_4$. In contrast to the well-known Ising spin chain case, here the SDW is stabilized by virtue of competing planar in-chain anisotropies and frustrated interchain exchange. Adjacent to the SDW phase is a broad $m = 1/3$ magnetization plateau that can be seen as a commensurate locking of the SDW state into the up-up-down (UUD) spin structure. This represents the first example of long-sought SDW-UUD transition in triangular-type quantum magnets.

Inelastic neutron scattering is used to investigate the temperature dependence of spin correlations in the 3-dimensional XY antiferromagnet Ni(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_2$$\cdot$4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$, $ x = 0.14(1)$, tuned close to the chemical-composition-induced soft-mode transition. The local dynamic structure factor shows $\hbarω/T$ scaling behavior characteristic of a quantum critical point. The deviation of the measured critical exponent from spin wave theoretical expectations are attributed to disorder. Another effect of disorder is local excitations above the magnon band. Their energy, structure factor and temperature dependence are well explained by simple strong-bond dimers associated with Br-impurity sites.

We have found an unusual competition of two frustration mechanisms in the 2D quantum antiferromagnet Cs$_2$CoBr$_4$. The key actors are the alternation of single-ion planar anisotropy direction of the individual magnetic Co$^{2+}$ ions, and their arrangement in a distorted triangular lattice structure. In particular, the uniquely oriented Ising-type anisotropy emerges from the competition of easy-plane ones, and for a magnetic field applied along this axis one finds a cascade of five ordered phases at low temperatures. Two of these phases feature magnetization plateaux. The low-field one is supposed to be a consequence of a collinear ground state stabilized by the anisotropy, while the other plateau bears characteristics of an "up-up-down" state exclusive for lattices with triangular exchange patterns. Such coexistence of the magnetization plateaux is a fingerprint of competition between the anisotropy and the geometric frustration in Cs$_2$CoBr$_4$.

A Faraday force magnetometer is presented for measurements of magnetization at temperatures down to 100~mK and in magnetic fields up to 14~T. The specimen is mounted on a flexible cantilever forming a force-sensing capacitor in combination with a fixed back plate. Two different cantilever designs are presented. A torsion resistant cantilever allows to measure magnetization of highly anisotropic single crystal samples. Measurements of the metal organic quantum magnets (C$_5$H$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ (BPCB) and NiCl$_2$$\cdot$4 SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ (DTN) demonstrate the device's capabilities. Routinely, a specimen's magnetic moment is measured with a resolution better than $10^{-7}$ A$\,$m$^2$ ($10^{-4}$ emu). The device in miniaturized to fit is almost any cryostat.

This paper investigates the processing of Frequency Modulated-Continuos Wave (FM-CW) radar signals for vehicle classification. In the last years deep learning has gained interest in several scientific fields and signal processing is not one exception. In this work we address the recognition of the vehicle category using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) applied to range Doppler signature. The developed system first transforms the 1-dimensional signal into a 3-dimensional signal that is subsequently used as input to the CNN. When using the trained model to predict the vehicle category we obtain good performance.
