The paper is devoted to the Thomson scattering (TS) diagnostics recently developed for the Globus-M2 spherical tokamak and prototy** the ITER divertor TS diagnostics. The distinctive features of the system are the use of spectrometers, acquisition system and lasers that meet the base requirements for ITER TS diagnostics. The paper describes the diagnostic system that allows precise measurements of TS signals, as well as the results of the first measurements of electron temperature and density in both central region of the plasma column and scrape-off layer. The system provides measurements of electron temperature $T_{e}$ in the range of 5 eV to 5 keV and density $n_{e}$ in the range of $5{\cdot}10^{17}÷3.25{\cdot}10^{20} m^{-3}$. The use of two ITER-grade probing lasers of different wavelengths (Nd:YAG 1064.5 nm and Nd:YLF 1047.3 nm) allows reliable measurement of $T_{e}$ in multi-colour mode, i.e., assuming that spectral calibration is unknown.

We use the calibrations by Calamida et al. and by Hilker et al., and the standardised synthetic photometry in the v, b, and y Stromgren passbands from Gaia DR3 BP/RP spectra, to obtain photometric metallicities for a selected sample of 694233 old Galactic giant stars having |b|>20.0 and parallax uncertainties lower than 10%. The zero point of both sets of photometric metallicities has been shifted to to ensure optimal match with the spectroscopic [Fe/H] values for 44785 stars in common with APOGEE DR17, focusing on the metallicity range where they provide the highest accuracy. The metallicities derived in this way from the Calamida et al. calibration display a typical accuracy of ~0.1 dex and 1 sigma precision ~0.2 dex in the range -2.2 <=[Fe/H]<= -0.4, while they show a systematic trend with [Fe/H] at higher metallicity, beyond the applicability range of the relation. Those derived from the Hilker et al. calibration display, in general, worse precision, and lower accuracy in the metal-poor regime, but have a median accuracy < 0.05 dex for [Fe/H]>= -0.8. These results are confirmed and, consequently, the metallicities validated, by comparison with large sets of spectroscopic metallicities from various surveys. The newly obtained metallicities are used to derive metallicity distributions for several previously identified sub-structures in the Galactic halo with an unprecedented number of stars. The catalogue including both sets of metallicities and the associated uncertainties is made publicly available.

Virial black hole mass ($M_{BH}$) determination directly involves knowing the broad line region (BLR) clouds velocity distribution, their distance from the central supermassive black hole ($R_{BLR}$) and the virial factor ($f$). Understanding whether biases arise in $M_{BH}$ estimation with increasing obscuration is possible only by studying a large (N$>$100) statistical sample of obscuration unbiased (hard) X-ray selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the rest-frame near-infrared (0.8-2.5$μ$m) since it penetrates deeper into the BLR than the optical. We present a detailed analysis of 65 local BAT-selected Seyfert galaxies observed with Magellan/FIRE. Adding these to the near-infrared BAT AGN spectroscopic survey (BASS) database, we study a total of 314 unique near-infrared spectra. While the FWHMs of H$α$ and near-infrared broad lines (He\textsc{i}, Pa$β$, Pa$α$) remain unbiased to either BLR extinction or X-ray obscuration, the H$α$ broad line luminosity is suppressed when $N_H\gtrsim10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$, systematically underestimating $M_{BH}$ by $0.23-0.46$ dex. Near-infrared line luminosities should be preferred to H$α$ until $N_H<10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$, while at higher obscuration a less biased $R_{BLR}$ proxy should be adopted. We estimate $f$ for Seyfert 1 and 2 using two obscuration-unbiased $M_{BH}$ measurements, i.e. the stellar velocity dispersion and a BH mass prescription based on near-infrared and X-ray, and find that the virial factors do not depend on redshift or obscuration, but for some broad lines show a mild anti-correlation with $M_{BH}$. Our results show the critical impact obscuration can have on BLR characterization and the importance of the near-infrared and X-rays for a less biased view of the BLR.

Context. Total solar irradiance allows for the use of the Sun as a star for studying observations of stellar light curves from recent space missions. Aims. We aim to study how the mid-range periodicity observed in solar activity indices influences the total solar irradiance. Methods. We studied periodic variations of total solar irradiance based on SATIRE-S and SOHO/VIRGO data during solar cycles 23-24 on timescales of Rieger-type periodicity. Then we compared the power spectrum of oscillations in the total solar irradiance to those of sunspot and faculae data to determine their contributions. Results. Wavelet analyses of TSI data reveal strong peaks at 180 days and 115 days in cycle 23, while cycle 24 showed periods of 170 days and 145 days. There are several periods in the sunspot and faculae data that are not seen in total solar irradiance as they probably cancel each other out through simultaneous brightening (in faculae) and darkening (in sunspots). Rieger-type periodicity is probably caused by magneto-Rossby waves in the internal dynamo layer, where the solar cyclic magnetic field is generated. Therefore, the observed periods in the total solar irradiance and the wave dispersion relation allow us to estimate the dynamo magnetic field strength as 10-15 kG. Conclusions. Total solar irradiance can be used to estimate the magnetic field strength in the dynamo layer. This tool can be of importance in estimating the dynamo magnetic field strength of solar-like stars using light curves obtained by space missions.

LOCNES (LOw-Cost NIR Extended Solar telescope) is a solar telescope installed at the TNG (Telescopio Nazionale Galileo). It feeds the light of the Sun into the NIR spectrograph GIANO-B through a 40-m patch of optical fibers. LOCNES has been designed to obtain high signal-to-noise ratio spectra of the Sun as a star with an accurate wavelength calibration through molecular-band cells. This is an entirely new area of investigation that will provide timely results to improve the search of telluric planets with NIR spectrographs such as iSHELL, CARMENES, and GIANO-B. We will extract several disc-integrated activity indicators and average magnetic field measurements for the Sun in the NIR. Eventually, they will be correlated with both the RV of the Sun-as-a -star and the resolved images of the solar disc in visible and NIR. Such an approach will allow for a better understanding of the origin of activity-induced RV variations in the two spectral domains and will help in improving the techniques for their corrections. In this paper, we outline the science drivers for the LOCNES project and its first commissioning results.

Such stars substantially contribute to producing large scale soft ($<2~\text{keV}$) diffuse X-ray emission. We also detected hard ($>3~\text{keV}$) diffuse X-ray emission in the direction of the pulsar PSR\,J2032+4127. The torus-shaped emission spans a $\approx 3'\times 2'$ jet-like structure. It is spatially coincident with the Fermi $γ$-ray source 4FGL\,J2032.3+4127. We suggest that the hard diffuse X-ray emission is the pulsar wind nebula bearing the pulsar PSR\,J2032+4127, a consequence of a past core-collapse SN explosion in the region.

XSS J12270-4859 (henceforth J12270) is the first low-mass X-ray binary to exhibit a transition, taking place at the end of 2012, from an X-ray active state to a radio pulsar state. The X-ray emission based on archival XMM-Newton observations is highly variable, showing rapid variations (10 s) from a high X-ray luminosity mode to a low mode and back. A flaring mode has also been observed. X-ray pulsations have been detected during the high mode only. In this work we present two possible interpretations for the rapid swings between the high and low modes. In the first scenario, this phenomenon can be explained by a rapid oscillation between a propeller state and a radio-ejection pulsar state, during which the pulsar wind prevents matter from falling onto the neutron star surface. In the second scenario, a radio pulsar is always active, the intra-binary shock is located just outside the light cylinder in the high mode, while it expands during the low mode. At variance with other transitional pulsars, J12270 shows two instances of the low mode: a low-soft and low-hard mode. Performing an X-ray spectral analysis, we show that the harder component, present in the low-hard spectra, is probably related to the tail of the flare emission. This supports the understanding that the flare mechanism is independent of the high-to-low mode transitions.

The power consumption of a microprocessor is a huge channel for information leakage. While the most popular exploitation of this channel is to recover cryptographic keys from embedded devices, other applications such as mobile app fingerprinting, reverse engineering of firmware, and password recovery are growing threats. Countermeasures proposed so far are tuned to specific applications, such as crypto-implementations. They are not scalable to the large number and variety of applications that typically run on a general purpose microprocessor.
In this paper, we investigate the design of a microprocessor, called PARAM with increased resistance to power based side-channel attacks. To design PARAM, we start with identifying the most leaking modules in an open-source RISC V processor. We evaluate the leakage in these modules and then add suitable countermeasures. The countermeasures depend on the cause of leakage in each module and can vary from simple modifications of the HDL code ensuring secure translation by the EDA tools, to obfuscating data and address lines thus breaking correlation with the processor's power consumption. The resultant processor is instantiated on the SASEBO-GIII FPGA board and found to resist Differential Power Analysis even after one million power traces. Compared to contemporary countermeasures for power side-channel attacks, overheads in area and frequency are minimal.

We report new measurements of the mobility \(μ\) of O$_{2}^{-}$ ions in supercritical neon in the range $45\,\mathrm{K}\le T\le 334\,\mathrm{K}$ for number density $N\ge 0.5\,$nm$^{-3}.$ We rationalize the experimental data of all isotherms with the Stokes-Cunningham formula by computing the ion hydrodynamic radius as a function of \(T \) and \(N\) with the thermodynamic free volume model developed for the ion mobility in superfluid He. The model parameters are determined by re-analyzing published data for $T=45\,$K for \(N\) up to $N\approx 1.65N_{c} $ ($N_{c}\approx 14.4\,$nm$^{-3}$ is the critical number density), which roughly span four orders of magnitude of the Knudsen number $(0.1\le \mathrm{K}_{n}\le 1000)$, covering the transition from the kinetic- to the hydrodynamic transport regime. These parameters provide an excellent description of the dependence of \(μ\) on \(N\) for all higher isotherms and yield a strict test of the model validity, thereby bridging the gap between the kinetic- and the hydrodynamic transport regimes.

Specifying QoS properties can limit the selection of some good web services that the user will have considered; this is because the algorithm used strictly ensures that there is a match between QoS properties of the consumer with that of the available services. This is to say that, a situation may arise that some services might not have all that the user specifies but are rated high in those they have. With some tradeoffs specified in form of weight, these services will be made available to the user for consideration. This assertion is from the fact that, the user's requirements for the specified QoS properties are of varying degree i.e. he will always prefer one ahead of the other. This can be captured in form of weight i.e. the one preferred most will have the highest weight. If a consumer specifies light weight for those QoS properties that a web service is deficient in and high weight for those it has, this will minimize the difference between them. Hence the service can be returned.

In this paper we consider a system of two two-level atoms interacting with a single-mode quantized electromagnetic field in a lossless resonant cavity via $l$-photon-transition mechanism. The field and the atoms are initially prepared in the coherent state and the excited atomic states, respectively. For this system we investigate the entropy squeezing, the atomic variances, the von Neumann entropy and the atomic inversions for the single-atom case. We show that the more the number of the parties in the system the less the amounts of the nonclassical effects exhibited in the entropy squeezing.
The entropy squeezing can give information on the corresponding von Neumann entropy. Also the nonclassical effects obtained form the asymmetric atoms are greater than those obtained form the symmetric atoms. Finally, the entropy squeezing gives better information than the atomic variances only for the asymmetric atoms.
