The AdS/CFT correspondence has significantly impacted the study of strongly coupled systems, providing insights into various condensed matter phenomena through its holographic duality. This paper introduces an alternative approach to the breaking of the global $U(1)$ symmetry in the bulk in two asymptotically AdS spacetimes: AdS plus hard wall and AdS Blackbrane. We explore a $(3+1)$-dimensional bulk $U(1)$ symmetry-breaking phase vacuum within a global $U(1)$ $φ^4$ field theory, without the gauge field present in prior models. We find the symmetry-breaking vacuum requires that the mass squared is proportional to the quartic coupling. We also investigate numerical solutions of topologically stable vortex strings extending into the bulk. We find evidence that the full UV expansion is dual to a point-like boundary excitation.

We study topological lumps supported by the second homotopy group $π_2(S^2) \simeq {\mathbb Z}$ in a gauged $O(3)$ model without any potential term coupled with a (non)dynamical $U(1)$ gauge field. It is known that gauged-lumps are stable with an easy-plane potential term but are unstable to expand if the model has no potential term. In this paper, we find that these gauged lumps without a potential term can be made stable by putting them in a uniform magnetic field, irrespective of whether the gauge field is dynamical or not. In the case of the non-dynamical gauge field, only either of lumps or anti-lumps stably exists depending on the sign of the background magnetic field, and the other is unstable to shrink to be singular. We also construct coaxial multiple lumps whose size and mass exhibit a behaviour of droplets. In the case of the dynamical gauge field, both the lumps and anti-lumps stably exist with different masses; the lighter (heavier) one corresponds to the (un)stable one in the case of the nondynamical gauge field. We find that a lump behaves as a superconducting ring and traps magnetic field in its inside, with the total magnetic field reduced from the background magnetic field.

The ground state of QCD with two flavors at a finite baryon chemical potential under rapid rotation is a chiral soliton lattice (CSL) of the $η$ meson, consisting of a stack of sine-Gordon solitons carrying a baryon number, due to the anomalous coupling of the $η$ meson to the rotation. In a large parameter region, the ground state becomes a non-Abelian CSL, in which due to the neutral pion condensation each $η$ soliton decays into a pair of non-Abelian sine-Gordon solitons carrying $S^2$ moduli originated from Nambu-Goldstone (NG) modes localized around it, corresponding to the spontaneously broken vector symmetry SU$(2)_{\rm V}$. There, the $S^2$ modes of neighboring solitons are anti-aligned, and these modes should propagate in the transverse direction of the lattice due to the interaction between the $S^2$ modes of neighboring solitons. In this paper, we calculate excitations including gapless NG modes and excited modes around non-Abelian and Abelian ($η$) CSLs, and find three gapless NG modes with linear dispersion relations (type-A NG modes): two isospinons ($S^2$ modes) and a phonon corresponding to the spontaneously broken vector SU$(2)_{\rm V}$ and translational symmetries around the non-Abelian CSL, respectively, and only a phonon for the Abelian CSL because of the recovering SU$(2)_{\rm V}$. We also find in the deconfined phase that the dispersion relation of the isospinons becomes of the Dirac type, {\it i.~e.~} linear even at large momentum.

An axion cosmic string is known to be a chiral superconductor when the axion couples to an electrically charged fermion. After the QCD phase transition, a QCD axion string is attached by $N$ domain walls. We would like to elucidate the fate of massless fermions on a global string after domain walls attached not only in the axion model but also in general models having string-wall composites. We investigate the Dirac equation under various string-wall composite backgrounds both in the axion(-like) models and in the ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetry inspired Abelian-Higgs models. We give an answer to the elementary question of whether massless fermions exist, and if so, where they are localized. The answer depends on fermion/boson masses in the models, and the massless fermion can be localized either on the string, on one of the domain walls, or in one of the vacua. We find analytic solutions for the fermion zero mode function by which we prove the existence of the massless fermion on the string-wall composites. We also show supercurrents flowing along the string-wall composites and anomalous electric currents flowing in from outside.

QCD matter in strong magnetic field exhibits a rich phase structure. In the presence of an external magnetic field, the chiral Lagrangian for two flavors is accompanied by the Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) term containing an anomalous coupling of the neutral pion $π_0$ to the magnetic field via the chiral anomaly. Due to this term, the ground state is inhomogeneous in the form of either chiral soliton lattice (CSL), an array of solitons in the direction of magnetic field, or domain-wall Skyrmion (DWSk) phase in which Skyrmions supported by $π_3[{\rm SU}(2)] \simeq {\mathbb Z}$ appear inside the solitons as topological lumps supported by $π_2(S^2) \simeq {\mathbb Z}$ in the effective worldvolume theory of the soliton. In this paper, we determine the phase boundary between the CSL and DWSk phases beyond the single-soliton approximation, within the leading order of chiral perturbation theory. To this end, we explore a domain-wall Skyrmion chain in multiple soliton configurations. First, we construct the effective theory of the CSL by the moduli approximation, and obtain the ${\mathbb C}P^1$ model or O(3) model, gauged by a background electromagnetic gauge field, with two kinds of topological terms coming from the WZW term: one is the topological lump charge in 2+1 dimensional worldvolume and the other is a topological term counting the soliton number. Topological lumps in the 2+1 dimensional worldvolume theory are superconducting rings and their sizes are constrained by the flux quantization condition. The negative energy condition of the lumps yields the phase boundary between the CSL and DWSk phases. We find that a large region inside the CSL is occupied by the DWSk phase, and that the CSL remains metastable in the DWSk phase in the vicinity of the phase boundary.

Based on the chiral perturbation theory at the leading order, we show the presence of a new phase in rapidly rotating QCD matter with two flavors, that is a domain-wall Skyrmion phase. Based on the chiral Lagrangian with a Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) term responsible for the chiral anomaly and chiral vortical effect, it was shown that the ground state is a chiral soliton lattice(CSL) consisting of a stack of $η$-solitons in a high density region under rapid rotation. In a large parameter region, a single $η$-soliton decays into a pair of non-Abelian solitons, each of which carries ${\rm SU}(2)_{\rm V}/{\rm U}(1) \simeq {\mathbb C}P^1 \simeq S^2$ moduli as a consequence of the spontaneously broken vector symmetry ${\rm SU}(2)_{\rm V}$. In such a non-Abelian CSL, we construct the effective world-volume theory of a single non-Abelian soliton to obtain a $d=2+1$ dimensional ${\mathbb C}P^1$ model with a topological term originated from the WZW term. We show that when the chemical potential is larger than a critical value, a topological lump supported by the second homotopy group $π_2(S^2) \simeq {\mathbb Z}$ has negative energy and is spontaneously created, implying the domain-wall Skyrmion phase. This lump corresponds in the bulk to a Skyrmion supported by the third homotopy group $π_3[ {\rm SU}(2)] \simeq {\mathbb Z}$ carrying a baryon number. This composite state is called a domain-wall Skyrmion, and is stable even in the absence of the Skyrme term. An analytic formula for the effective nucleon mass in this medium is obtained as $4\sqrt{2}πf_πf_η/m_π \sim 1.21$ GeV with the decay constants $f_π$ and $f_η$ of the pions and $η$ meson, respectively, and the pion mass $m_π$, which is surprisingly close to the nucleon mass in the QCD vacuum.

We study a simple axionlike model with a charged scalar $φ$ and a double-charged scalar $ζ$ of global $U(1)$ symmetry. A particular feature of our model is that a vacuum manifold is a torus knot. We consider a hierarchical symmetry-breaking scenario where $ζ$ first condenses, giving rise to cosmic $ζ$-strings, and the subsequent condensation of $φ$ leads to domain-wall formation spanning the $ζ$-strings. We find that the formation of the walls undergoes two different regimes depending on the magnitude of an explicit breaking term of the relative $U(1)$ between $ζ$ and $φ$. One is the weakly interacting regime where the walls are accompanied by another cosmic $φ$ strings. The other is the strongly interacting regime where no additional strings appear. In both regimes, neither a $ζ$-string, a $φ$-string nor a wall alone is topological, but the composite of an appropriate number of strings and walls as a whole is topologically stable, characterized by the fundamental homotopy group of the torus knot. We confirm the formation and the structure of the string-wall system by first-principle cosmological two-dimensional simulations. We find stable string-wall composites at equilibrium, where the repulsive force between $ζ$-strings and the tension of walls balances, and a novel reconnection of the string-wall composites.

We study various composites of global solitons consisting of domain walls, strings, and monopoles in linear $O(N)$ models with $N=2$ and $3$. Spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) of the $O(N)$ symmetry down to $O(N-1)$ results in the vacuum manifold $S^{N-1}$, together with a perturbed scalar potential in the presence of a small explicit symmetry breaking (ESB) interaction. The $O(2)$ model is equivalent to the axion model admitting topological global (axion) strings attached by $N_{\rm DW}$ domain walls. We point out for the $N_{\rm DW} = 2$ case that the topological stability of the string with two domain walls is ensured by sequential SSBs $(\mathbb{Z}_2)^2 \to \mathbb{Z}_2 \to 1$, where the first SSB occurs in the vacuum leading to the topological domain wall as a mother soliton, only inside which the second SSB occurs giving rise to a subsequent kink inside the mother wall. From the bulk viewpoint, this kink is identical to a global string as a daughter soliton. This observation can be naturally extended to the $O(3)$ model, where a global monopole as a daughter soliton appears as a kink in a mother string or as a vortex on a mother domain wall, depending on ESB interactions. In the most generic case, the stability of the composite system consisting of the monopole, string, and domain wall is understood by the SSB $(\mathbb{Z}_2)^3 \to (\mathbb{Z}_2)^2 \to \mathbb{Z}_2 \to 1$, in which the first SSB at the vacuum gives rise to the domain wall triggering the second one, so that the daughter string appears as a domain wall inside the mother wall triggering the third SSB, which leads to a granddaughter monopole as a kink inside the daughter vortex. We demonstrate numerical simulations for the dynamical evolution of the composite solitons.

We discuss an efficient and reliable procedure to evaluate the Kondo temperature defined at the ground state from experimental or numerical data sets of the magnetic field dependence of the linear conductance or the magnetization of the quantum dot. This procedure is helpful for quantitative comparison of the theory and the experiment, and useful in Kondo-correlated systems where temperature control over a wide range is difficult, such as for cold atoms. A chiral soliton lattice(CSL), an array of solitons, is the ground state due to the chiral anomaly in the presence of a magnetic field larger than a certain critical value at finite density. Here, we show in a model-independent and fully analytic manner (at the leading order of ChPT) that the CSL phase transits to a {\it domain-wall Skyrmion phase} when the chemical potential is larger than the critical value $μ_{\rm c} = 16πf_π^2/3m_π \sim 1.03 \;\; {\rm GeV}$ with the pion's decay constant $f_π$ and mass $m_π$, which can be regarded as the nuclear saturation density. There spontaneously appear stable two-dimensional Skyrmions or lumps on a soliton surface, which can be viewed as three-dimensional Skyrmions carrying even baryon numbers from the bulk despite no Skyrme term. They behave as superconducting rings with persistent currents due to a charged pion condensation, and areas of the rings' interiors are quantized. This phase is in scope of future heavy-ion collider experiments.

The chiral soliton lattice is an array of topological solitons realized as ground states of QCD at finite density under strong magnetic fields or rapid rotation, and chiral magnets with an easy-plane anisotropy. In such cases, topological solitons have negative energy due to topological terms originating from the chiral magnetic or vortical effect and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, respectively. We study quantum nucleation of topological solitons in the vacuum through quantum tunneling in $2+1$ and $3+1$ dimensions, by using a complex $φ^4$ (or the axion) model with a topological term proportional to an external field, which is a simplification of low-energy theories of the above systems. In $2+1$ dimensions, a pair of a vortex and an anti-vortex is connected by a linear soliton, while in $3+1$ dimensions, a vortex is string-like, a soliton is wall-like, and a disk of a soliton wall is bounded by a string loop. Since the tension of solitons can be effectively negative due to the topological term, such a composite configuration of a finite size is created by quantum tunneling and subsequently grows rapidly. We estimate the nucleation probability analytically in the thin-defect approximation and fully calculate it numerically using the relaxation (gradient flow) method. The nucleation probability is maximized when the direction of the soliton is perpendicular to the external field. We find a good agreement between the thin-defect approximation and direct numerical simulation in $2+1$ dimensions if we read the vortex tension from the numerics, while we find a difference between them at short distances interpreted as a remnant energy in $3+1$ dimensions.

While the scale-invariant scalar potential has a topologically trivial vacuum admitting no strings at the classical level, quantum correction allows topologically nontrivial vacua and stable string solutions. We find that the system of the CW potential exhibits significant difference from that of the conventional Abelian-Higgs model with the quadratic-quartic potential. While a single-winding string is qualitatively similar in both systems, and the static intervortex force between two strings at large distance is attractive/repulsive in the type-I/II regime for both, that between two CW-ANO strings exhibits a nontrivial structure. It develops an energy barrier between them at intermediate distance, implying that the string with winding number $n > 1$ can constitute a metastable bound state even in the type-II regime. We name such a superconductor type-$\overline{1.5}$. We also discuss implications to high-energy physics and cosmology.

This configuration, a bound state of the two strings connected by a domain wall, is called a vortex molecule. Although the vortex molecule has no net topological charge, the locally induced topological charge density is polarized, namely distributed positively around one constituent string and negatively around the other constituent string, leading to the stability of the molecule. We numerically show that the vortex molecule is indeed a stable solution of the equation of motions in a much wider parameter space of the model than the usual axially symmetric $Z$-string in the Standard Model and the two Higgs doublet model, although it is not the case for experimental values of the parameters.

A brane-world $SU(5)$ GUT model with global non-Abelian vortices is constructed in six-dimensional spacetime. We find a solution with a vortex associated to $SU(3)$ separated from another vortex associated to $SU(2)$. This $3-2$ split configuration achieves a geometric Higgs mechanism for $SU(5)\to SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1)$ symmetry breaking. A simple deformation potential induces a domain wall between non-Abelian vortices, leading to a linear confining potential. The confinement stabilizes the vortex separation moduli, and assures the vorticity of $SU(3)$ group and of $SU(2)$ group to be identical. This dictates the equality of the numbers of fermion zero modes in the fundamental representation of $SU(3)$ (quarks) and of $SU(2)$ (leptons), leading to quark-lepton generations. The standard model massless gauge fields are localized on the non-Abelian vortices thanks to a field-dependent gauge kinetic function. We perform fluctuation analysis with an appropriate gauge fixing and obtain a four-dimensional effective Lagrangian of unbroken and broken gauge fields at quadratic order. We find that $SU(3) \times SU(2) \times U(1)$ gauge fields are localized on the vortices and exactly massless. Complications in analyzing the spectra of gauge fields with the nontrivial gauge kinetic function are neatly worked out by a vector-analysis like method.

We find chiral non-Abelian vortices having windings only in one of the diquark condensations of left-handed and right-handed quarks in the color-flavor locked phase of dense QCD. They are the minimum vortices carrying half color magnetic fluxes of those of non-Abelian semi-superfluid vortices (color magnetic flux tubes) and 1/6 quantized superfluid circulations of Abelian superfluid vortices. These vortices carry ${\mathbb C}P^2$ orientational moduli in the internal space corresponding to their fluxes. The ${\mathbb C}P^2$ moduli of two chiral non-Abelian vortices with chiralities opposite to each other are energetically favored to be aligned while those of a vortex and anti-vortex to be orthogonal, and then these vortices attract each other. They are attached by chiral domain walls in the presence of the mass and axial anomaly terms explicitly breaking axial and chiral symmetries. We numerically show that two chiral non-Abelian vortices with chiralities opposite to each other are connected by a chiral domain wall, consisting a mesonic bound state which is nothing but a non-Abelian semi-superfluid vortex. We also show that Abelian and non-Abelian axial vortices attached by chiral domain walls are all unstable to decay into a set of chiral non-Abelian vortices. Furthermore, we find that chiral non-Abelian vortices exhibit unique features: one is the so-called topological obstruction implying that unbroken symmetry generators in the bulk are not defined globally around the vortices, and the other is color non-singlet Aharonov-Bohm (AB) phases implying that quarks encircling these vortices can detect the colors of magnetic fluxes of them at infinite distances.

We theoretically examine the transport through an Aharonov-Bohm ring with an embedded quantum dot (QD), the so-called QD interferometer, to address two controversial issues regarding the shape of the Coulomb peaks and measurement of the transmission phase shift through a QD. We extend a previous model [B. R. Bulka and P. Stefanski, Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 5128 (2001); W. Hofstetter, J. Konig, and H. Schoeller, ibid. 87, 156803 (2001)] to consider multiple conduction channels in two external leads, L and R. We introduce a parameter p_α (|p_α| \le 1) to characterize a connection between the two arms of the ring through lead α(=L, R), which is the overlap integral between the conduction modes coupled to the two arms. First, we study the shape of a conductance peak as a function of energy level in the QD, in the absence of electron-electron interaction U. We show an asymmetric Fano resonance for |p_{L,R}| = 1 in the case of single conduction channel in the leads and an almost symmetric Breit-Wigner resonance for |p_{L,R}| < 0.5 in the case of multiple channels. Second, the Kondo effect is taken into account by the Bethe ansatz exact solution in the presence of U. We precisely evaluate the conductance at temperature T=0 and show a crossover from an asymmetric Fano-Kondo resonance to the Kondo plateau with changing p_{L,R}. Our model is also applicable to the multi-terminal geometry of the QD interferometer. We discuss the measurement of the transmission phase shift through the QD in a three-terminal geometry by a "double-slit experiment." We derive an analytical expression for the relation between the measured value and the intrinsic value of the phase shift.

We explore the effect of using two-dimensional matter-wave vortices to confine an ensemble of bosonic quantum impurities. This is modelled theoretically using a mass-imbalanced homogeneous two component Gross-Pitaevskii equation where each component has independent atom numbers and equal atomic masses. By changing the mass imbalance of our system we find the shape of the vortices are deformed even at modest imbalances, leading to barrel shaped vortices; which we quantify using a multi-component variational approach. The energy of impurity carrying vortex pairs are computed, revealing a mass-dependent energy splitting. We then compute the excited states of the impurity, which we in turn use to construct `covalent bonds' for vortex pairs. Our work opens a new route to simulating synthetic chemical reactions with superfluid systems.

Strings in $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric ${\rm U}(1)^N$ gauge theories with $N$ hypermultiplets are studied in the generic setting of an arbitrary Fayet-Iliopoulos triplet of parameters for each gauge group and an invertible charge matrix. Although the string tension is generically of a square-root form, it turns out that all existing BPS (Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield) solutions have a tension which is linear in the magnetic fluxes, which in turn are linearly related to the winding numbers. The main result is a series of theorems establishing three different kinds of solutions of the so-called constraint equations, which can be pictured as orthogonal directions to the magnetic flux in ${\rm SU}(2)_R$ space. We further prove for all cases, that a seemingly vanishing Bogomol'nyi bound cannot have solutions. Finally, we write down the most general vortex equations in both master form and Taubes-like form. Remarkably, the final vortex equations essentially look Abelian in the sense that there is no trace of the ${\rm SU}(2)_R$ symmetry in the equations, after the constraint equations have been solved.

We find a topologically non-trivial structure of the Nambu monopole in two Higgs doublet model (2HDM), which is a magnetic monopole attached by two topologically stable $Z$ strings ($Z$ flux tubes) from two opposite sides. The structure is in sharp contrast to the topological triviality of the Nambu monopole in the standard model (SM), which is attached by a single non-topological $Z$ string. It is found that the Nambu monopole in 2HDM possesses the same fiber bundle structure with those of the `t Hooft-Polyakov monopole and the Wu-Yang description of the Dirac monopole, as a result of the fact that the electromagnetic gauge field is well-defined even inside the strings and is non-trivially fibered around the monopole, while the Nambu monopole in the SM is topologically trivial because electroweak gauge symmetry is restored at the core of the string. Consequently, the Nambu monopole in 2HDM can be regarded as an embedding of the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole into the $SU(2)_W$ gauge symmetry, and the Dirac's quantization condition always holds, which is absent for the Nambu monopole in the SM. Furthermore, we construct a dyon configuration attached with the two strings.

We develop a convenient description by grid diagrams which are polytopes determined by mass parameters of the model. To illustrate the validity of our method, we work out non-planar domain wall networks for lower $N$ in $3+1$ dimensions. In general, the networks can have compact vacuum bubbles, which are finite vacuum regions surrounded by domain walls, when the polytopes of the grid diagrams have inner vertices, and the size of bubbles can be controlled by moduli parameters. We also construct domain wall networks with bubbles in the shapes of the Platonic, Archimedean, Catalan, and Kepler-Poinsot solids.

We study the dynamics of the Nambu monopole in two Higgs doublet models, which is a magnetic monopole attached by two topological $Z$ strings ($Z$ flux tubes) from two opposite sides. The monopole is a topologically stable solution of the equation of motions when the Higgs potential has global $U(1)$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetries. In this paper, we consider more general cases without the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry, and find that it is no longer a static solution but moves along the $Z$ string being pulled by the heavier string. After analytically constructing an asymptotic form of the monopole, we confirm such a motion using the numerical relaxation method. In addition, we analyze the real time dynamics of the monopole based on a point-like approximation. Consequently, if there were long string networks with the monopoles in the early universe, the monopole accelerates nearly to the speed of light emitting electromagnetic radiations as a synchrotron accelerator, and collides to an anti-monopole on the string. This collision event, which we call the cosmological monopole collider, can produce much heavier particles than those we can see today, e.g., at the Large Hadron Collider.

For specific choice of mass parameters, the Lagrangian is invariant under the symmetric group ${\cal S}_{D+1}$ of degree $D+1$ spontaneously broken down to ${\cal S}_D$ in vacua, admitting ${\cal S}_{D+1}/{\cal S}_D$ domain wall junctions. In $D=2$, there are three vacua and three domain walls meeting at a junction point, in which the conventional topological charges $Y$ and $Z$ exist for the BPS domain wall junctions and the BPS domain walls, respectively as known before. In $D=3$, there are four vacua, six domain walls, four junction lines on which three domain walls meet, and one junction point on which all the six domain walls meet. We define a new topological charge $X$ for the junction point in addition to the conventional topological charges $Y$ and $Z$. In general dimensions, we find that the configuration expressed in the $D$-dimensional real space is dual to a regular $D$-simplex in the $D$-dimensional internal space and that a $d$-dimensional subsimplex of the regular $D$-simplex corresponds to a $(D-d)$-dimensional intersection. Topological charges are generalized to the level-$d$ wall charge $W_d$ for the $d$-dimensional subsimplexes.

Possible stable states are "hadrons" either of mesonic type, i.e., molecules made of a vortex and anti-vortex in the same component connected by a soliton, or of baryonic type, i.e., molecules made of two vortices winding in two different components connected by a soliton. Mesonic molecules move straight with a constant velocity while baryonic molecules rotate. We numerically simulate collision dynamics of mesonic and baryonic molecules and find that the molecules swap a partner in collisions in general like chemical and nuclear reactions, summarize all collisions as vortex reactions, and describe those by Feynman diagrams. We find a selection rule for final states after collisions of vortex molecules, analogous to that for collisions of hadrons in QCD.

We provide complete and self-contained formulas about localization of massless/massive Abelian gauge fields on topological solitons in generic $D$ dimensions via a field dependent gauge kinetic term. The localization takes place when a stabilizer (a scalar field) is condensed in the topological soliton. We show that the localized gauge bosons are massless when the stabilizer is neutral. On the other hand, they become massive for the charged stabilizer as a consequence of interplay between the localization mechanism and the Higgs mechanism. For concreteness, we give two examples in six dimensions. The one is domain wall intersections and the other is an axially symmetric soliton background.

We analyze a Higgs potential with a global $U(1)$ symmetry and a discrete symmetry $\mathbb{Z}_2$. The monopole is attached by two topological $Z$ strings ($Z$ flux tubes) from both sides. Despite of a trivial second homotopy group, the discrete symmetry $\mathbb{Z}_2$ together with a non-trivial first homotopy group for $Z$ strings topologically ensures the topological stability. After analytically constructing an asymptotic form of such a configuration, we explicitly construct a solution of the equation of motion based on a 3D numerical simulation, in which magnetic fluxes spherically emanating from the monopole at large distances are deformed in the vicinity of the monopole. Since the monopoles are expected to be abundant in the present universe, they might be observed in the current monopole searches.

The single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) can be a one-dimensional topological insulator, which is characterized by a $\mathbb{Z}$-topological invariant, winding number. Using the analytical expression for the winding number, we classify the topology for all possible chiralities of SWNTs in the absence and presence of a magnetic field, which belongs to the topological categories of BDI and AIII, respectively. We find that the majority of SWNTs are nontrivial topological insulators in the absence of a magnetic field. In addition, the topological phase transition takes place when the band gap is closed by applying a magnetic field along the tube axis, in all the SWNTs except armchair nanotubes. The winding number determines the number of edge states localized at the tube ends by the bulk-edge correspondence, the proof of which is given for SWNTs in general. This enables the identification of the topology in experiments.

As a particularly simple case, we consider a domain wall in five dimensions, and show that massless states for scalar (0-form), vector (1-form), and tensor (2-form) fields appear on a domain wall, which may be called topological because of robustness of their existence (insensitive to continuous deformations of parameters). The spin of localized massless bosons is selected by the shape of the nonlinear kinetic function, analogously to the chirality selection of fermion by the well-known Jackiw-Rebbi mechanism. Several explicitly solvable examples are given. We consider not only (anti)BPS domain walls in non-compact extra dimension but also non-BPS domain walls in compact extra dimension.

Contrary to the standard model that does not admit topologically nontrivial solitons, two Higgs doublet models admit topologically stable vortex strings and domain walls. We numerically confirm the existence of a topological $Z$-string confining fractional $Z$-flux inside. We show that topological strings at $\sinθ_W = 0$ limit reduce to non-Abelian strings which possess non-Abelian moduli $S^2$ associated with spontaneous breakdown of the $SU(2)$ custodial symmetry. We numerically solve the equations of motion for various parameter choices. It is found that a gauging $U(1)_Y$ always lowers the tension of the $Z$-string while it keeps that of the $W$-string. On the other hand, a deformation of the Higgs potential is either raising or lowering the tensions of the $Z$-string and $W$-string. We numerically obtain an effective potential for the non-Abelian moduli $S^2$ for various parameter deformations under the restriction $\tanβ=1$. It is the first time to show that there exists a certain parameter region where the topological $W$-string can be the most stable topological excitation, contrary to conventional wisdom of electroweak theories. We also obtain numerical solutions of composites of the string and domain walls in a certain condition.

Localization of gauge fields is achieved by the condensation of Higgs field via a Higgs dependent gauge kinetic term in five-dimensional Lagrangian. The domain wall connecting vacua with unbroken gauge symmetry drives the Higgs condensation which provides both electroweak symmetry breaking and gauge field localization at the same time. Our model predicts higher-dimensional interactions $|H|^{2n}(F_{μν})^2$ in the low-energy effective theory. This leads to two expectations: The one is a new tree-level contribution to $H \to γγ$ ($H \to gg$) decay whose signature is testable in future LHC experiment. The other is a finite electroweak monopole which may be accessible to the MoEDAL experiment. Interactions of translational Nambu-Goldstone boson is shown to satisfy a low-energy theorem.

Dynamical localization of non-Abelian gauge fields in non-compact flat $D$ dimensions is worked out. The localization takes place via a field-dependent gauge kinetic term when a field condenses in a finite region of spacetime. Such a situation typically arises in the presence of topological solitons. We construct four-dimensional low-energy effective Lagrangian up to the quadratic order in a universal manner applicable to any spacetime dimensions. We devise an extension of the $R_ξ$ gauge to separate physical and unphysical modes clearly. Out of the D-dimensional non-Abelian gauge fields, the physical massless modes reside only in the four-dimensional components, whereas they are absent in the extra-dimensional components. The universality of non-Abelian gauge charges holds due to the unbroken four-dimensional gauge invariance. Combining the semi-classical localization mechanism for gauge fields with $N$ domain wall background in a simple $SU(N)$ gauge theory in five space-time dimensions we investigate the geometric Higgs mechanism, where a spontaneous breakdown of the gauge symmetry comes from splitting of domain walls. The mass spectra are investigated in detail for the phenomenologically interesting case $SU(5) \to SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1)$ which is realized on a split configuration of coincident triplet and doublet of domain walls. We derive a low energy effective theory in a generic background using the moduli approximation, where all non-linear interactions between effective fields are captured up to two derivatives. We observe novel similarities between domain walls in our model and D-branes in superstring theories.

We present a field theoretical model unifying grand unified theory (GUT) and brane world scenario. As a concrete example, we consider $SU(5)$ GUT in 4+1 dimensions where our 3+1 dimensional spacetime spontaneously arises on five domain walls. A field-dependent gauge kinetic term is used to localize massless non-Abelian gauge fields on the domain walls and to assure the charge universality of matter fields. We find the domain walls with the symmetry breaking $SU(5)\to SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1)$ as a global minimum and all the undesirable moduli are stabilized with the mass scale of $M_{\rm GUT}$. Profiles of massless Standard Model particles are determined as a consequence of wall dynamics. The proton decay can be exponentially suppressed.

We demonstrate that the confinement of half-quantized vortices (HQVs) in coherently coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) simulates certain aspects of the confinement in $SU(2)$ quantum chromodynamics (QCD) in 2+1 space-time dimensions. By identifying the circulation of superfluid velocity as the baryon number and the relative phase between two components as a dual gluon, we identify HQVs in a single component as electrically charged particles with a half baryon number. Further, we show that only singlet states of the relative phase of two components can stably exist as bound states of vortices, that is, a pair of vortices in each component (a baryon) and a pair of a vortex and an antivortex in the same component (a meson). We then study the dynamics of a baryon and meson; baryon is static at the equilibrium and rotates once it deviates from the equilibrium, while a meson moves with constant velocity. For both baryon and meson we verify a linear confinement and determine that they are broken, thus creating other baryons or mesons in the middle when two constituent vortices are separated by more than some critical distance, resembling QCD.

We continue our study of 1/4 Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) composite solitons of vortex strings, domain walls and boojums in N=2 supersymmetric Abelian gauge theories in four dimensions. In this work, we numerically confirm that a boojum appearing at an end point of a string on a thick domain wall behaves as a magnetic monopole with a fractional charge in three dimensions. We introduce a "magnetic" scalar potential whose gradient gives magnetic fields. Height of the magnetic potential has a geometrical meaning that is shape of the domain wall. We find a semi-local extension of boojum which has an additional size moduli at an end point of a semi-local string on the domain wall. Dyonic solutions are also studied and we numerically confirm that the dyonic domain wall becomes an electric capacitor storing opposite electric charges on its skins. At the same time, the boojum becomes fractional dyon whose charge density is proportional to ${\vec E} \cdot {\vec B}$. We also study dual configurations with an infinite number of boojums and anti-boojums on parallel lines and analyze the ability of domain walls to store magnetic charge as magnetic capacitors. In understanding these phenomena, the magnetic scalar potential plays an important role. We study the composite solitons from the viewpoints of the Nambu-Goto and Dirac-Born-Infeld actions, and find the semi-local BIon as the counterpart of the semi-local Boojum.

The topological phase transition is theoretically studied in a metallic single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) by applying a magnetic field $B$ parallel to the tube. The $\mathbb{Z}$ topological invariant, winding number, is changed discontinuously when a small band gap is closed at a critical value of $B$, which can be observed as a change in the number of edge states owing to the bulk-edge correspondence. This is confirmed by numerical calculations for finite SWNTs of $\sim$ 1 $μ$m length, using a one-dimensional lattice model to effectively describe the mixing between $σ$ and $π$ orbitals and spin-orbit interaction, which are relevant to the formation of the band gap in metallic SWNTs.

Semilocal strings are vortices in the extended Abelian-Higgs model with two complex Higgs scalar fields among which a global $SU(2)$ symmetry acts. They are known to be stable (unstable against expansion) in type-I (II) superconductors, in which gauge field is heavier (lighter) than the Higgs scalar field. In this paper, we find that vortices can be stabilized in the whole parameter region including the type-II region by adding a potential term breaking the $SU(2)$ symmetry. We construct numerical solutions in various parameters and determine the vortex phase diagram consisting of six phases. In two phases, a vortex is polarized, that is, split into two half-quantized vortices with a certain distance, to form a vortex molecule, while in the rests a vortex is identical to the conventional Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen vortex.

Depending on the initial kink setup and impact velocities, the model allows for a wide range of scattering behaviours. Kinks can repel each other, annihilate, form true or false domain walls and reflect off each other.

We obtain solutions to the 1/4 BPS equations with the finite gauge coupling constant. To obtain numerical solutions for generic coupling constants, we construct globally correct approximate functions which allow us to easily find fixed points of gradient flow equations. We analytically/numerically confirm that the negative mass of a single boojum appearingat the endpoint of the vortex string on the logarithmically bent domain wall is equal to the half-mass of the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole. We examine various configurations and clarify how the shape of the boojum depends on the coupling constants and moduli parameters. We also find analytic solutions to the 1/4 BPS equations for specific values of the coupling constants.

They are 1/4 BPS states in supersymmetric theories with eight supercharges, carry fractional (half) instanton charges characterized by the fourth homotopy group $π_4 (G/H)$, and have divergent energy in infinite spaces. We construct exact solutions for the sigma models and numerical solutions for the gauge theories. Small instanton singularity in sigma models is resolved at finite gauge coupling (for the Abelian gauge theory). Instantons in Abelian and non-Abelian gauge theories have negative and positive instantons charges, respectively, which are related by the Seiberg-like duality that changes the sign of the instanton charge.

Using the Pade approximation for the vortex core profile, we calculate the intervortex potential, whose asymptotic form for a large distance has been derived by Eto et al. [Phys. Rev. A, 83, 063603 (2011)]. Through numerical simulations of the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equations, we reveal different kinds of dynamical trajectories of the vortices depending on the combinations of signs of circulations and the intercomponent density coupling. Under the adiabatic limit, we derive the equations of motion for the vortex coordinates, in which the motion is caused by the balance between Magnus force and the intervortex forces. The initial velocity of the vortex motion can be explained quantitatively by this point vortex approximation, but under- standing the long-time behavior of the dynamics needs more consideration beyond our model.

We find that motion in internal moduli spaces of generic domain walls has an upper bound for its velocity. Our finding is based on our generic formula for all-order effective actions of internal moduli parameter of domain wall solitons. It is known that the Nambu-Goldstone mode $Z$ associated with spontaneous breaking of translation symmetry obeys a Nambu-Goto effective Lagrangian $\sqrt{1 - (\partial_0 Z)^2}$ detecting the speed of light ($|\partial_0 Z|=1$) in the target spacetime. Solitons can have internal moduli parameters as well, associated with a breaking of internal symmetries such as a phase rotation acting on a field. We obtain, for generic domain walls, an effective Lagrangian of the internal moduli $ε$ to all order in $(\partial ε)$. The Lagrangian is given by a function of the Nambu-Goto Lagrangian: $L = g(\sqrt{1 + (\partial_με)^2})$. This shows generically the existence of an upper bound on $\partial_0 ε$, i.e. a speed limit in the internal space. The speed limit exists even for solitons in some non-relativistic field theories, where we find that $ε$ is a type I Nambu-Goldstone mode which also obeys a nonlinear dispersion to reach the speed limit. This offers a possibility of detecting the speed limit in condensed matter experiments.

Under a natural assumption that a low energy effective action of the domain wall is dual to the $D=4$ DBI action for a membrane, we are lead to a coincidence between the $J$-kink domain wall and the membrane with constant magnetic field $B$ and electric field ${\bf E}$. We also find that $(Q, {\bf J}, ω, {\bf k})$ is dual to $(B, {\bf E}, H, {\bf D})$ with $H$ and ${\bf D}$ being a magnetizing field and a displacement field, respectively.

We then show that ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ lumps on it represent $SU(N)$ Skyrmions in the bulk point of view, providing a physical realization of the rational map Ansatz for Skyrmions of the translational (Donaldson) type. We find therefore that Skyrmions can exist stably without the Skyrme term.
