Experimental Test of the Numerical Renormalization Group Theory for Inelastic Scattering from Magnetic Impurities
Abstract: We present measurements of the phase coherence time \tauphi in quasi one-dimensional Au/Fe Kondo wires and compare the temperature dependence of \tauphi with a recent theory of inelastic scattering from magnetic impurities (Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 107204 (2004)). A very good agreement is obtained for temperatures down to 0.2 $T_K$. Below the Kondo temperature $T_K$, the inverse of the phase coheren… ▽ More

Vortex Multiplication in Applied Flow: the Precursor to Superfluid Turbulence
Abstract: The dynamics of quantized vortices in rotating $^3$He-B is investigated in the low density (single-vortex) regime as a function of temperature. An abrupt transition is observed at $0.5 T_{\rm c}$. Above this temperature the number of vortex lines remains constant, as they evolve to their equilibrium positions. Below this temperature the number of vortices increases linearly in time until the vor… ▽ More

Shear flow and Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in superfluids
Abstract: The first realization of instabilities in the shear flow between two superfluids is examined. The interface separating the A and B phases of superfluid He-3 is magnetically stabilized. With uniform rotation we create a state with discontinuous tangential velocities at the interface, supported by the difference in quantized vorticity in the two phases. This state remains stable and nondissipative… ▽ More

Superconducting Nb-film LC resonator
Abstract: Sputtered Nb thin-film LC resonators for low frequencies at 0.5 MHz have been fabricated and tested in the temperature range 0.05--1 K in magnetic fields up to 30 mT. Their Q value increases towards decreasing temperature as sqrt(T) and reaches 10^3 at 0.05 K. As a function of magnetic field Q is unstable and displays variations up to 50%, which are reproducible from one field sweep to the next.… ▽ More
