Unfolder: Fast localization and image rectification of a document with a crease from folding in half
Abstract: Presentation of folded documents is not an uncommon case in modern society. Digitizing such documents by capturing them with a smartphone camera can be tricky since a crease can divide the document contents into separate planes. To unfold the document, one could hold the edges potentially obscuring it in a captured image. While there are many geometrical rectification methods, they were usually de… ▽ More

On groups that can be covered by conjugates of finitely many cyclic or procyclic subgroups
Abstract: Given a discrete (resp. profinite) group $G$, we define $NCC(G)$ to be the smallest number of cyclic (resp. procyclic) subgroups of $G$ whose conjugates cover $G$. In this paper we determine all residually finite discrete groups with finite NCC and give an almost complete characterization of profinite groups with finite NCC. As a consequence we can show, for example, that for any $k\in\mathbb N$ a… ▽ More

On the second cohomology of the norm one group of a p-adic division algebra
Abstract: Let $F$ be a $p$-adic field, that is, a finite extension of $\mathbb Q_p$. Let $D$ be a finite-dimensional central division algebra over $F$ and let $SL_1(D)$ be the group of elements of reduced norm $1$ in $D$. Prasad and Raghunathan proved that $H^2(SL_1(D),\mathbb R/\mathbb Z)$ is a cyclic $p$-group whose order is bounded from below by the number of $p$-power roots of unity in $F$, unless $D$ i… ▽ More

Advanced Hough-based method for on-device document localization
Abstract: The demand for on-device document recognition systems increases in conjunction with the emergence of more strict privacy and security requirements. In such systems, there is no data transfer from the end device to a third-party information processing servers. The response time is vital to the user experience of on-device document recognition. Effective finite generation for [IA_n,IA_n] and the Johnson kernel
Abstract: Let $IA_n$ denote the group of $IA$-automorphisms of a free group of rank $n$, and let $\mathcal I_n^b$ denote the Torelli subgroup of the map** class group of an orientable surface of genus $n$ with $b$ boundary components, $b=0,1$. The Tarski numbers of groups
Abstract: The Tarski number of a non-amenable group G is the minimal number of pieces in a paradoxical decomposition of G. In this paper we investigate how Tarski numbers may change under various group-theoretic operations. Using these estimates and known properties of Golod-Shafarevich groups, we show that the Tarski numbers of 2-generated non-amenable groups can be arbitrarily large. We also use the cost… ▽ More

Given a field K, we consider the sequence b_1(G_i;K)/[G:G_i] of normalized first Betti numbers of G_i with coefficients in K, which we call a K-approximation for b_1^(2)(G), the first L^2-Betti number of G. Abstract: We introduce and study the class of groups graded by root systems. We prove that if Φ is an irreducible classical root system of rank at least 2 and G is a group graded by Φ, then under certain natural conditions on the grading, the union of the root subgroups is a Kazhdan subset of G. As the main application of this theorem we prove that for any reduced irreducible classical root system Φ of rank… ▽ More

The congruence subgroup property for $Aut F_2$: A group-theoretic proof of Asada's theorem
Abstract: The goal of this paper is to give a group-theoretic proof of the congruence subgroup property for $Aut(F_2)$, the group of automorphisms of a free group on two generators. This result was first proved by Asada using techniques from anabelian geometry, and our proof is, to a large extent, a translation of Asada's proof into group-theoretic language. Abstract simplicity of complete Kac-Moody groups over finite fields

It is known that $G$ admits the structure of a BN-pair, and acts on its corresponding building. We study the complete Kac-Moody group $\hat{G}$ which is defined to be the closure of $G$ in the automorphism group of its building. Our main goal is to determine when complete Kac-… ▽ More
