The control of thermal radiation by sha** its spatial and spectral emission characteristics plays a key role in many areas of science and engineering. Conventional approaches to tailor thermal emission using metamaterials are severely hampered both by the limited spatial resolution of the required sub-wavelength material structures and by the materials' strong absorption in the infrared. Here, we demonstrate a promising new approach based on the concept of topology. By changing a single parameter of a multilayer coating, we control the reflection topology of a surface, with the critical point of zero reflection being topologically protected. As a result, the boundaries between sub-critical and super-critical spatial domains host topological interface states with near-unity thermal emissivity. Our experimental demonstration of this effect shows that topological concepts enable unconventional manipulation of thermal light with promising applications for thermal management, energy harvesting and thermal camouflage.

Using graphene as a tuneable optical material enables a series of optical devices such as switchable radar absorbers, variable infrared emissivity surfaces, or visible electrochromic devices. These devices rely on controlling the charge density on graphene with electrostatic gating or intercalation. In this paper, we studied the effect of ionic liquid intercalation on the long-term performance of optoelectronic devices operating within a broad infrared wavelength range. Our spectroscopic and thermal characterization results reveal the key limiting factors for the intercalation process and the performance of the infrared devices, such as the electrolyte ion-size asymmetry and charge distribution scheme and the effects of oxygen. Our results provide insight for the limiting mechanism for graphene applications in infrared thermal management and tunable heat signature control.

The ability to control heat transport with electrical signals has been an outstanding challenge due to the lack of efficient electrothermal materials. Previous attempts have mainly concentrated on phase-change and layered materials and encountered various problems such as low thermal conductivities and modest on/off ratios. Here, we demonstrate a graphene-based electrothermal switch enabling electrically tuneable heat flow. The device uses reversible electro-intercalation of ions to modulate the in-plane thermal conductivity of graphene film by over thirteen-fold via electrically tuneable phonon scattering. We anticipate that our results could provide a realistic pathway for adaptive thermal transport enabling a new class of electrically driven thermal devices which would find a broad spectrum of applications in aerospace and microelectronics.

The topological structure associated with the branchpoint singularity around an exceptional point (EP) provides new tools for controlling the propagation of electromagnetic waves and their interaction with matter. To date, observation of EPs in light-matter interactions has remained elusive and has hampered further progress in applications of EP physics. Here, we demonstrate the emergence of EPs in the electrically controlled interaction of light with a collection of organic molecules in the terahertz regime at room temperature. We show, using time-domain terahertz spectroscopy, that the intensity and phase of terahertz pulses can be controlled by a gate voltage which drives the device across the EP. This fully electrically-tuneable system allows reconstructing the Riemann surface associated with the complex energy landscape and provides a topological control of light by tuning the loss-imbalance and frequency detuning of interacting modes. We anticipate that our work could pave the way for new means of dynamic control on the intensity and phase of terahertz field, develo** topological optoelectronics, and studying the manifestations of EP physics in the quantum correlations of the light emitted by a collection of emitters coupled to resonators.

Optical materials with colour-changing abilities have been explored for display devices, smart windows, or modulation of visual appearance. The efficiency of these materials, however, has strong wavelength dependence, which limits their functionality to a narrow spectral range. Here, we report graphene-based electro-optical devices with unprecedented optical tunability covering the entire electromagnetic spectrum from the visible to microwave. We achieve this non-volatile and reversible tunability by electro-intercalation of lithium into graphene layers in an optically accessible device structure. This unique colour-changing capability, together with area-selective intercalation, inspires fabrication of new multispectral devices, including display devices and electro-optical camouflage coating. We anticipate that these results provide realistic approaches for programmable smart optical surfaces with a potential utility in many scientific and engineering fields.

Electrically tuneable high mobility charges on graphene yield an efficient electro-optical platform to control and manipulate terahertz (THz) waves. Real-world applications require a multiplex THz device with efficient modulation over a large active area. The trade-off between the efficient gating and switching speed, however, hinders the realization of these applications. Here, we demonstrate a large-format 256-pixel THz modulator which provides high-frame-rate reconfigurable transmission patterns. The time-domain and frequency-domain THz characterizations of graphene devices reveal the relaxation pathways of gate-induced charges and ion packing at graphene-electrolyte interface. The fundamental understanding of these limiting factors enables us to break the trade-off permitting switching frequencies up to 1 kHz. To show the promises of these devices, we demonstrate a single-pixel THz camera which allows spatial and spectroscopic imaging of large-area objects without any moving components. These results provide a significant advancement towards the achievement of non-invasive THz imaging systems using graphene-based platforms.

Electronic textiles (e-textiles) are about to face tremendous environmental and resource challenges due to the complexity of sorting, the risk to supplies and metal contamination in textile recycling streams. This is because e-textiles are heavily based on the integration of valuable metals, including gold, silver and copper. In the context of exploring sustainable materials in e-textiles, we tested the boundaries of multi-layer (ML) graphene in wearable communication applications, in which metal assemblies are leading the way in wearable communication. This study attempts to create a soft, textile-based communication interface that does not disrupt tactile comfort and conformity by introducing ML graphene sheets. The antenna design proposed is based on a multidisciplinary approach that merges electromagnetic engineering and material science and integrates graphene, a long-lasting alternative to metal components. The designed antenna covers a wide bandwidth ranging from 3 GHz to 9 GHz, which is a promising solution for a high data rate and efficient communication link. We also described the effects of bending and proximity to the human body on the antenna performance. Overall, the results suggested that graphene-based soft antennas are a viable solution for a fully integrated textile-based communication interface that can replace the current rigid, restrictive and toxic approaches, leading to a future where eco-friendliness and sustainability is the only way forward!

Interactive clothing requires sensing and display functionalities to be embedded on textiles. Despite the significant progress of electronic textiles, the integration of optoelectronic materials on fabrics still remains as an outstanding challenge. Here, using the electro-optical tunability of graphene, we report adaptive optical textiles with electrically controlled reflectivity and emissivity covering the infrared and near-infrared wavelengths. We achieve electro-optical modulation by reversible intercalation of ions into graphene layers laminated on fabrics. We demonstrate a new class of infrared textile devices including display, yarn and stretchable devices using natural and synthetic textiles. To show the promise of our approach, we fabricated an active device directly onto a t-shirt which enables long-wavelength infrared communication via modulation of the thermal radiation from the human body. The results presented here, provide complementary technologies which could leverage the ubiquitous use of functional textiles.

Electrical control of amplitude and phase of terahertz radiation (THz) is the key technological challenge for high resolution and noninvasive THz imaging. The lack of an active materials and devices hinders the realization of these imaging systems. Here, we demonstrate an efficient terahertz phase and amplitude modulation using electrically tunable graphene devices. Our device structure consists of electrolyte-gated graphene placed at quarter wavelength distance from a reflecting metallic surface. In this geometry, graphene operates as a tunable impedance surface which yields electrically controlled reflection phase. Terahertz time domain reflection spectroscopy reveals the voltage controlled phase modulation of π and the reflection modulation of 50 dB. To show the promises of our approach, we demonstrate a multipixel phase modulator array which operates as a gradient impedance surface.
