Long context inference presents challenges at the system level with increased compute and memory requirements, as well as from an accuracy perspective in being able to reason over long contexts. Recently, several methods have been proposed to compress the prompt to reduce the context length. However, there has been little work on comparing the different proposed methods across different tasks through a standardized analysis. This has led to conflicting results. To address this, here we perform a comprehensive characterization and evaluation of different prompt compression methods. In particular, we analyze extractive compression, summarization-based abstractive compression, and token pruning methods. Surprisingly, we find that extractive compression often outperforms all the other approaches, and enables up to 10x compression with minimal accuracy degradation. Interestingly, we also find that despite several recent claims, token pruning methods often lag behind extractive compression. We only found marginal improvements on summarization tasks.

A novel method to reconstruct the energy of hadronic showers in the CMS High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL) is presented. The HGCAL is a sampling calorimeter with very fine transverse and longitudinal granularity. The active media are silicon sensors and scintillator tiles readout by SiPMs and the absorbers are a combination of lead and Cu/CuW in the electromagnetic section, and steel in the hadronic section. The shower reconstruction method is based on graph neural networks and it makes use of a dynamic reduction network architecture. It is shown that the algorithm is able to capture and mitigate the main effects that normally hinder the reconstruction of hadronic showers using classical reconstruction methods, by compensating for fluctuations in the multiplicity, energy, and spatial distributions of the shower's constituents. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated using test beam data collected in 2018 prototype of the CMS HGCAL accompanied by a section of the CALICE AHCAL prototype. The capability of the method to mitigate the impact of energy leakage from the calorimeter is also demonstrated.

We analyse and characterise the notion of lattice Lipschitz operator (a class of superposition operators, diagonal Lipschitz maps) when defined between Banach function spaces. After showing some general results, we restrict our attention to the case of those Lipschitz operators which are representable by pointwise composition with a strongly measurable function. Mimicking the classical definition and characterizations of (linear) multiplication operators between Banach function spaces, we show that under certain conditions the requirement for a diagonal Lipschitz operator to be well-defined between two such spaces $X(μ)$ and $Y(μ)$ is that it can be represented by a strongly measurable function which belongs to the Bochner space $\mathcal M(X,Y) \big(μ, Lip_0(\mathbb R) \big). $ Here, $\mathcal M(X,Y) $ is the space of multiplication operators between $X(μ)$ and $Y(μ),$ and $Lip_0(\mathbb R)$ is the space of real-valued Lipschitz maps with real variable that are equal to $0$ in $0. $ This opens the door to a better understanding of these maps, as well as finding the relation of these operators to some normed tensor products and other classes of maps.

In free-space optical satellite networks (FSOSNs), satellites can have different laser inter-satellite link (LISL) ranges for connectivity. Greater LISL ranges can reduce network latency of the path but can also result in an increase in transmission power for satellites on the path. Consequently, this tradeoff between satellite transmission power and network latency should be investigated, and in this work we examine it in FSOSNs drawing on the Starlink Phase 1 Version 3 and Kuiper Shell 2 constellations for different LISL ranges and different inter-continental connections. We use appropriate system models for calculating the average satellite transmission power and network latency. The results show that the mean network latency decreases and mean average satellite transmission power increases with an increase in LISL range. For the Toronto--Sydney inter-continental connection in an FSOSN with Starlink's Phase 1 Version 3 constellation, when the LISL range is approximately 2,900 km, the mean network latency and mean average satellite transmission power intersect are approximately 135 ms and 380 mW, respectively. For an FSOSN with the Kuiper Shell 2 constellation in this inter-continental connection, this LISL range is around 3,800 km, and the two parameters are approximately 120 ms and 700 mW, respectively. For the Toronto--Istanbul and Toronto--London inter-continental connections, the LISL ranges at the intersection are different and vary from 2,600 km to 3,400 km. Furthermore, we analyze outage probability performance of optical uplink/downlink due to atmosphere attenuation and turbulence.

Hypertension (HPT) refers to a condition where the pressure exerted on the walls of arteries by blood pumped from the heart to the body reaches levels that can lead to various ailments. Annually, a significant number of lives are lost globally due to diseases linked to HPT. Therefore, the early and accurate diagnosis of HPT is of utmost importance. This study aimed to automatically and with minimal error detect patients suffering from HPT by utilizing electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. The research involved the collection of ECG signals from two distinct groups. These groups consisted of ECG data of both five thousand and ten thousand data points in length, respectively. The performance in HPT detection was evaluated using entropy measurements derived from the 5-layer Intrinsic Mode Function(IMF) signals through the application of the Empirical Mode Decomposition method. The resulting performances were compared based on the nine features extracted from each IMF. To summarize, employing the 5-fold cross-validation technique, the most exceptional accuracy rates achieved were 99.9991% and 99.9989% for ECG data of lengths five thousand and ten thousand, respectively, using decision tree algorithms. These remarkable performance results indicate the potential usefulness of this method in assisting medical professionals to identify individuals with HPT.

Lattice Lipschitz operators define a new class of nonlinear Banach-lattice-valued maps that can be written as diagonal functions with respect to a certain basis. In the $n-$dimensional case, such a map can be represented as a vector of size $n$ of real-valued functions of one variable. In this paper we develop a method to approximate almost diagonal maps by means of lattice Lipschitz operators. The proposed technique is based on the approximation properties and error bounds obtained for these operators, together with a pointwise version of the interpolation of McShane and Whitney extension maps that can be applied to almost diagonal functions. In order to get the desired approximation, it is necessary to previously obtain an approximation to the set of eigenvectors of the original function. We focus on the explicit computation of error formulas and on illustrative examples to present our construction.

Split learning enables efficient and privacy-aware training of a deep neural network by splitting a neural network so that the clients (data holders) compute the first layers and only share the intermediate output with the central compute-heavy server. This paradigm introduces a new attack medium in which the server has full control over what the client models learn, which has already been exploited to infer the private data of clients and to implement backdoors in the client models. Although previous work has shown that clients can successfully detect such training-hijacking attacks, the proposed methods rely on heuristics, require tuning of many hyperparameters, and do not fully utilize the clients' capabilities. In this work, we show that given modest assumptions regarding the clients' compute capabilities, an out-of-the-box outlier detection method can be used to detect existing training-hijacking attacks with almost-zero false positive rates. We conclude through experiments on different tasks that the simplicity of our approach we name \textit{SplitOut} makes it a more viable and reliable alternative compared to the earlier detection methods.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have attracted significant interest from the academia and industry most recently. Motivated by the wide usage of UAVs, this paper considers UAV communication with reconfigurable antenna (RA) in the presence of fading and shadowing effects which occur due to tall buildings and skyscrapers in urban areas. More precisely, RA offers to receive information through mirror activation patterns (MAPs) so that it can achieve a receive diversity with decreased error probability by using only one radio frequency (RF) chain. Also, media based modulation (MBM) technique for data transmission with MAPs can be exploited by using RAs with reduced cost. To quantify the performance of the proposed UAV system, we derive a tight upper bound for the overall error probability by considering approximated channel model to the standardization studies for UAVs. The results have shown that RAs can make the overall system more resilient to shadowing and fading effects in terms of error performance, and they are energy efficient.

Free-space optical satellite networks (FSOSNs) will employ free-space optical links between satellites and between satellites and ground stations, and the link budget for optical inter-satellite links and optical uplink/downlink is analyzed in this paper. The satellites in these FSOSNs will have limited energy and thereby limited power, and we investigate the effect of link distance and link margin on optical inter-satellite link transmission power, and the effect of slant distance, elevation angle, and link margin on optical uplink/downlink transmission power. We model these optical links and compute the results for various parameters. We observe that the transmission power increases when the link distance increases for inter-satellite and uplink/downlink communications, while the transmission power decreases when the elevation angle increases for uplink/downlink transmission. We also observe an inverse relationship between link margin and link distance. Furthermore, we highlight some practical insights and design guidelines gained from this analysis.

Some of the symptoms of this disease are fever, cough, shortness of breath and difficulty in breathing. In more serious cases, death may occur as a result of infection. COVID19 emerged as a pandemic that affected the whole world in a little while. The most important issue in the fight against the epidemic is the early diagnosis and follow-up of COVID19 (+) patients. Therefore, in addition to the RT-PCR test, medical imaging methods are also used when identifying COVID 19 (+) patients. In this study, an alternative approach was proposed using cough data, one of the most prominent symptoms of COVID19 (+) patients. The performances of z-normalization and min-max normalization methods were investigated on these data. All features were obtained using discrete wavelet transform method. Support vector machines (SVM) was used as classifier algorithm. The highest performances of accuracy and F1-score were obtained as 100% and 100% using the min-max normalization, respectively. On the other hand, the highest accuracy and highest F1-score performances were obtained as 99.2 % and 99.0 % using the z-normalization, respectively. In light of the results, it is clear that cough acoustic data will contribute significantly to controlling COVID19 cases.

In this study, an alternative approach was proposed by using cough data, which is one of the most prominent symptoms of COVID19(+) patients. The cough acoustic public dataset on the Virufy website was used. The entire data was normalized using z-normalization technique. The performance of the features obtained via the 5-layer empirical mode decomposition method and the performances of different classifiers has been compared. As the classifier algorithm, 5 different algorithms were used. The highest accuracy and F1-score performances were obtained by using Ensemble-Bagged-Trees algorithm as 90.6% and 90.5%, respectively. On the other hand, other classification algorithms used in the study are Support Vector Machines, Logistic Regression, Linear Discriminant Analysis and k-Nearest Neigbors, respectively. According to the results obtained, choosing the right classifier algorithm provides high results. Thus, it is clear that using cough acoustic data, those with COVID19(+) can be detected easily and effectively.

As a solution to these problems, we propose a cooperation strategy in which a high altitude platform station (HAPS) staying at a quasi-stationary position contributes to the inter-satellite connectivity. In this setup, the HAPS node uses two different scheduling approaches: one that relies on the zenith angle; the other on instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio. To quantify the performance of the proposed scheme, overall outage probabilities for the two scheduling methods are obtained. Specifically, we propose two practical eavesdrop** scenarios for satellite-to-HAPS (downlink) and HAPS-to-satellite (uplink) optical communications, where the attacker spacecraft can eavesdrop on the transmitted signal or the received signal. To quantify the secrecy performance of the scenarios, the average secrecy capacity and secrecy outage probability expressions are derived and validated with Monte Carlo simulations. Moreover, secrecy throughput of the proposed models is investigated. We observe that turbulence-induced fading significantly impacts the secrecy performance of free-space optical communication.

In this work, we study the performance of multiple-hop mixed frequency (RF)/free-space optical (FSO) communication-based decode-and-forward protocol for multicast networks. So far, serving a large number of users is considered a promising approach for real-time applications to address the massive data traffic demands.
In this regard, we propose two practical use-cases. In the former model, we propose a high altitude platform station (HAPS)-aided mixed RF/FSO/RF communication scheme where a terrestrial ground station intends to communicate with a cluster of nodes through two stratospheric HAPS systems. In the latter model, we assume that the line of sight connectivity is inaccessible between the two HAPS systems due to high attenuation caused by large propagation distances. Thereby, we propose a low Earth orbit satellite-aided mixed RF/FSO/FSO/RF communication. For the proposed scenarios, closed-form expressions of outage probability (OP) and bit error rate are derived. In addition, to illustrate the asymptotic behavior of the proposed models, diversity gains are obtained. Furthermore, ergodic capacity and energy efficiency (EE) are provided for both scenarios. Finally, the simulation results are provided to validate the theoretical derivations. The results show that satellite-aided mixed RF/FSO/FSO/RF scenarios achieve better OP, whereas HAPS-aided mixed RF/FSO/RF scenario can achieve higher EE.

Distributed deep learning frameworks such as split learning provide great benefits with regards to the computational cost of training deep neural networks and the privacy-aware utilization of the collective data of a group of data-holders. Split learning, in particular, achieves this goal by dividing a neural network between a client and a server so that the client computes the initial set of layers, and the server computes the rest. However, this method introduces a unique attack vector for a malicious server attempting to steal the client's private data: the server can direct the client model towards learning any task of its choice, e.g. towards outputting easily invertible values. With a concrete example already proposed (Pasquini et al., CCS '21), such training-hijacking attacks present a significant risk for the data privacy of split learning clients.
In this paper, we propose SplitGuard, a method by which a split learning client can detect whether it is being targeted by a training-hijacking attack or not. We experimentally evaluate our method's effectiveness, compare it with potential alternatives, and discuss in detail various points related to its use. We conclude that SplitGuard can effectively detect training-hijacking attacks while minimizing the amount of information recovered by the adversaries.

Training deep neural networks often forces users to work in a distributed or outsourced setting, accompanied with privacy concerns. Split learning aims to address this concern by distributing the model among a client and a server. The scheme supposedly provides privacy, since the server cannot see the clients' models and inputs. We show that this is not true via two novel attacks. (1) We show that an honest-but-curious split learning server, equipped only with the knowledge of the client neural network architecture, can recover the input samples and obtain a functionally similar model to the client model, without being detected. (2) We show that if the client keeps hidden only the output layer of the model to "protect" the private labels, the honest-but-curious server can infer the labels with perfect accuracy. We test our attacks using various benchmark datasets and against proposed privacy-enhancing extensions to split learning. Our results show that plaintext split learning can pose serious risks, ranging from data (input) privacy to intellectual property (model parameters), and provide no more than a false sense of security.

Non-terrestrial networks have been attracting much interest from the industry and academia. Satellites and high altitude platform station (HAPS) systems are expected to be the key enablers of next-generation wireless networks. In this paper, we introduce a novel downlink satellite communication (SatCom) model where free-space optical (FSO) communication is adopted between a satellite and a HAPS node. A hybrid FSO/radio-frequency (RF) transmission model is used between the HAPS node and ground station (GS). In the first phase of transmission, the satellite selects the HAPS node that provides the highest signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In the second phase, the selected HAPS decodes and forwards the signal to the GS. To evaluate the performance of the proposed system, outage probability expressions are derived for exponentiated Weibull (EW) and shadowed-Rician fading models while considering the atmospheric turbulence, stratospheric attenuation, and attenuation due to scattering, path loss, and pointing errors. Additionally, asymptotic analysis is carried out and diversity gain is provided. Furthermore, the impact of aperture averaging technique, temperature, and wind speed are investigated. We also provide some important guidelines that can be helpful for the design of practical HAPS-aided SatCom. Finally, the results show that the use of HAPS improves the system performance and that the proposed model performs better than all other existing models.

Running simulations is an effective method of gaining insights on the existing systems and analyzing potential improvements. However, many of the existing blockchain simulators have various shortcomings that yield them insufficient for a wide range of scenarios. In this demo paper, we present Zelig: our blockchain simulator designed with the main goals of customizability and extensibility. To the best of our knowledge, Zelig is the only blockchain simulator that enables simulating custom network topologies without modifying the simulator code. We explain our simulator design, validate via experimental analysis against the real-world Bitcoin network, and highlight potential use cases.

Recent studies have shown that satellite communication (SatCom) will have a fundamental role in the next generation non-terrestrial networks (NTN). In SatCom, radio-frequency (RF) or free-space optical (FSO) communications can be used depending on the communication environment. Motivated by the complementary nature of RF and FSO communication, we propose a hybrid RF/FSO transmission strategy for SatCom, where the satellite selects RF or FSO links depending on the weather conditions obtained from the context-aware sensor. To quantify the performance of the proposed network, we derive the outage probability expressions by considering different weather conditions. Moreover, asymptotic analysis is conducted to obtain the diversity order. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of non-zero boresight pointing errors and illustrate the benefits of the aperture averaging to mitigate the effect of misalignment and atmospheric turbulence. Finally, we suggest effective design guidelines that can be useful for system designers. The results have shown that the proposed strategy performs better than the dual-mode conventional hybrid RF/FSO communication in terms of outage probability offering some power gain.

In the former, we assume that a high altitude platform station (HAPS) is trying to capture the confidential information from the low earth orbit (LEO) satellite, whereas in the latter, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) eavesdropper is trying to intercept the confidential information from the HAPS node. To quantify the overall performance of both scenarios, we obtain closed-form secrecy outage probability (SOP) and probability of positive secrecy capacity (PPSC) expressions and validate with Monte Carlo simulations. Furthermore, we provide important design guidelines that can be helpful in the design of secure non-terrestrial networks.

More precisely, we propose a new SatCom scheme where a HAPS node is used as an intermediate relay to transmit the satellite's signal to the ground station (GS). In this network, free-space optical (FSO) communication is adopted between HAPS and satellite, whereas RF communication is used between HAPS and GS as the line-of-sight (LoS) communication cannot be established. To quantify the overall secrecy performance of the proposed scheme, closed-form secrecy outage probability (SOP) and the probability of positive secrecy capacity (PPSC) expressions are derived. Moreover, we investigate the effect of pointing error and shadowing severity parameters. Finally, design guidelines that can be useful in the design of practical SatCom networks are presented.

Two emerging technologies, cognitive radio (CR) and free-space optical (FSO) communication, have created much interest both in academia and industry recently as they can fully utilize the spectrum while providing cost-efficient secure communication. In this article, motivated by the mounting interest in CR and FSO systems and by their ability to be rapidly deployed for civil and military applications, particularly in emergency situations, we propose a CR enabled radio frequency (RF)/FSO communication model for an aerial relay network. In the proposed model, CR enabled RF communication is employed for a ground-to-air channel to exploit the advantages of CR, including spectrum efficiency, multi-user connectivity, and spatial diversity. For an air-to-air channel, FSO communication is used, since the air-to-air path can provide perfect line-of-sight connectivity, which is vital for FSO systems. Finally, for an air-to-ground channel, a hybrid RF/FSO communication system is employed, where the RF communication functions as a backup for the FSO communication in the presence of adverse weather conditions. The proposed communication model is shown to be capable of fully utilizing the frequency spectrum, while effectively dealing with RF network problems of spectrum mobility and underutilization, especially for emergency conditions when multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are deployed.

Nowadays, prognostics-aware systems are increasingly used in many systems and it is critical for sustaining autonomy. All engineering systems, especially robots, are not perfect. Absence of failures in a certain time is the perfect system and it is impossible practically. In all engineering works, we must try to predict or minimize/prevent failures in the system. Failures in the systems are generally unknown, so prediction of these failures and reliability of the system is made by prediction process. Reliability analysis is important for the improving the system performance, extending system lifetime, etc. Prognostic and Health Management (PHM) includes reliability, safety, predictive fault detection / isolation, advanced diagnostics / prognostics, component lifecycle tracking, health reporting and information management, etc. This study proposes an open source robot prognostic and health management tool using model-based methodology namely "Prognostics and Health Management tool for ROS". This tool is a generic tool for using with any kind of robot (mobile robot, robot arm, drone etc.) with compatible with ROS. Some features of this tool are managing / monitoring robots' health, RUL, probability of task completion (PoTC) etc. User is able to enter the necessary equations and components information (hazard rates, robot configuration etc.) to the PHM tool and the other sensory data like temperature, humidity, pressure, load etc. In addition to these, a case study is conducted for the mobile robots (OTA) using this tool.

Recent advances have shown that satellite communication (SatCom) will be an important enabler for next generation terrestrial networks as it can provide numerous advantages, including global coverage, high speed connectivity, reliability, and instant deployment. An ideal alternative for radio frequency (RF) satellites is its free-space optical (FSO) counterpart. FSO or laser SatCom can mitigate the problems occurring in RF SatCom, while providing important advantages, including reduced mass, lower consumption, better throughput, and lower costs. Furthermore, laser SatCom is inherently resistant to jamming, interception, and interference. Owing to these benefits, this paper focuses on downlink laser SatCom, where the best ground station (GS) is selected among numerous candidates to provide reliable connectivity and maximum site diversity. To quantify the performance of the proposed scheme, we derive closed-form outage probability and ergodic capacity expressions for two different practical GS deployment scenarios. Furthermore, asymptotic analysis is conducted to obtain the overall site diversity gain, and aperture averaging is studied to illustrate the impact of aperture diameter on the overall performance. Finally, important design guidelines that can be useful in the design of practical laser SatComs are outlined.

In this work, a new transmission scheme, signal space cognitive cooperation, is introduced by applying the idea of signal space diversity in an underlay spectrum sharing decode-and-forward multi-relay cooperative network. In the proposed structure, the secondary source signal is rotated by a certain angle and then the source and the secondary best relay transmit the in-phase and the quadrature components of the rotated signal. As a consequence, two source signals, rather than one, are transmitted in two-time slots which improves data rates considerably, compared to the conventional cognitive cooperative schemes. In this work, proactive relaying mode is used in which the best relay is selected based on the max-min selection criterion before executing the transmission. Considering both statistical and the instantaneous channel state information of the feedback channel between the primary receiver and the secondary network, two power allocation methods are adopted at the source. For both methods, closed-form expressions of error probability are derived. Moreover, asymptotic analysis is performed and diversity gain is obtained to provide further insights about the system performance. Finally, analytical expressions are verified by Monte-Carlo simulations.
