Mechanical stresses and strains in the microstructure of cathode materials evolving during charge/discharge cycles can reduce the long-term stability of intercalation-type alkali-metal-ion batteries. In this context, crystalline compounds exhibiting zero-strain (ZS) behavior are of particular interest. Near-ZS sodiation was experimentally measured in the \textit{tetragonal tungsten bronze} (TTB) type compound Na$_x$FeF$\mathrm{_3}$. Using a first-principles method based on density functional theory, we investigate the potential of iron-based fluoride compounds with tungsten bronze (TB) structures as ZS cathode materials. Simulations were conducted to study the intercalation of the alkali metal ions Li$\mathrm{^+}$, Na$\mathrm{^+}$, and K$\mathrm{^+}$ into the TTB and two related TB structures of the cubic perovskite (PTB) and hexagonal (HTB) types. We describe compensating local volume effects that can explain the experimentally measured low volume change of Na$_x$FeF$\mathrm{_3}$. We discuss the structural and chemical prerequisites of the host lattice for ZS insertion mechanism for alkali ions in TB structures and present a qualitative descriptor to predict the local volume change, that provides a way for faster screening and discovery of novel ZS battery materials.

We investigate nitrogen-vacancy center (NV) ensembles in diamond under the influence of strongly-correlated electron-spin baths. We thoroughly calculate the decoherence properties of the NV central spin for bath concentrations of 0.1-100 ppm using the cluster-correlation expansion (CCE) method. We systematically analyze possible origins of the significant deviations in the values of the $T_2$ coherence time reported in literature. We demonstrate that significant variations can originate from the choice of averaging and fitting procedures used for the ensemble average and we point out the respective aspects that need to be considered, when comparing the various theoretical studies. Our study may ease readers to perform reliable and fast simulations on the central spin problem. It provides an understanding and interpretation of the outcome parameters describing the dynamics of the local bath spins.

The integrated device of a perovskite solar cell with a Li-ion battery is an innovative solution for decentralized energy storage in smart electronic devices. In this study, we examine the stability of Li ions intercalated in a CsPbI$_3$ perovskite and their effect on the electronic structure of Li$_x$CsPbI$_3$ compounds using first-principles density functional theory. Our simulations demonstrate that the insertion of Li at concentrations up to $x$ = 1 into CsPbI$_3$ is energetically possible. Moreover, we identify that the distortion of the Pb-I octahedra has the strongest impact on the change in the electronic band gap. Specifically, an increase in the amount of intercalated Li causes larger structural distortions, which in turn lead to an increasing band gap as function of the Li content.

We present a theoretical study on the magnetic signals of structural surface defects like cracks or indents combined with rough surfaces or subsurface inclusions of soft ferromagnetic metals like body-centered cubic Fe or amorphous CoFeB. We discuss limits of early detection of small surface defects on the basis of calculated magnetic stray fields few tens of nm above the surface. The considered surface imperfections have extensions of a few nm which correspond to low multiples of the magnetic exchange lengths of Fe or CoFeB. The detection of such small inhomogeneities requires that the sensor is about as close to the surface as the size of the inhomogeneity is. Furthermore, the step width of a scanning sensor must be of the same size as well. Both these requirements may be fulfilled for instance by scanning microscopy with diamond nitrogen-vacancy-center quantum sensors.

Here, we investigate Li ions inside crystals of CsPbI$_3$, as a prototype compound, by means of density-functional-theory calculations. Our findings demonstrate that the interstitial location and migration of Li ions depend strongly on the dynamic nature of the crystal structure of the perovskite compound. We consider two limiting cases for Li in CsPbI$_{3}$,(i) the cubic-symmetry structure as a model for the limit of fast ion motion and (ii) a distorted cubic structure as a model for the limit of slow ion motion. For both limiting cases we obtain moderate energy barriers for migrating Li ions, which highlight the potential of halide perovskites like CsPbI$_3$ for applications in photo-battery devices.

Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) is one of the powerful computatioinal approaches to study electron correlation effects in solid-state materials and molecules. Its practical applicability is, however, limited by the exponential growth of the many-particle Hilbert space with the number of considered electronic orbitals. Here, the possibility of a one-to-one map** between electronic orbitals and the state of a qubit register suggests a significant computational advantage for the use of a Quantum Computer (QC) for solving DMFT models. In this work we present a QC approach to solve a two-site DMFT model based on the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) algorithm. We discuss the challenges arising from stochastic errors and suggest a means to overcome unphysical features in the self-energy. We thereby demonstrate the feasibility to obtain self-consistent results of the two-site DMFT model based on VQE simulations with a finite number of shots. We systematically compare results obtained on simulators with calculations on the IBMQ Ehningen QC hardware.

A main source of capacity fading in lithium-ion batteries is the degradation of the active cathode materials caused by the series of volume changes during charge and discharge cycles. The quaternary colquiriite-type fluorides Li$_x$CaFeF$\mathrm{_6}$ and Li$_x$CaCoF$\mathrm{_6}$ were reported to have negligible volume changes in specific Li concentration ranges, making the underlying colquiriite structure a promising candidate for so-called zero-strain behavior. Using first-principles electronic structure calculations based on density functional theory with a Hubbard-$U$ correlation correction on the transition-metal ions, we systematically investigate the equilibrium volumes of the colquiriite-type fluorides Li$_x$CaMF$\mathrm{_6}$ with M =Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni at the Li concentrations $x$=0, 1, and 2. We elucidate the connection between the total volume of the structures and the local volumes of fluorine coordinated octahedra around the cations, and we find trends along the series of the 3d transition-metal elements. In the lithiation step from $x$=1 to $x$=2 we find volume changes of about 10 %, and we discuss the discrepancy to the experimentally reported smaller value for Li$_x$CaFeF$\mathrm{_6}$. The suitability as cathode material was furhter investigated by calculating the theoretical voltages and capacities. From $x$=0 to $x$=1 we describe the compensating structural mechanisms that lead to an exceptionally small volume change of Li$_x$CaMnF$\mathrm{_6}$, which posseses a high theoretical voltage and moderate capacity. This compound is therefore a particularly promising zero-strain cathode material.

To measure localized GB phonon modes, meV energy resolution is needed with sub-nm spatial resolution. Using monochromated electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) in the scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) we have mapped the 60 meV optic mode across GBs in silicon at atomic resolution and compared it to calculated phonon densities of states (DOS). The intensity is strongly reduced at GBs characterised by the presence of five- and seven-fold rings where bond angles differ from the bulk. The excellent agreement between theory and experiment strongly supports the existence of localized phonon modes and thus of GBs acting as waveguides.

Oxygen vacancy formation energies play a major role in the electric field assisted abnormal grain growth of technologically relevant polycrystalline perovskite phases. The underlying effect on the atomic scale is assumed to be a redistribution of cationic and anionic point defects between grain boundaries and the bulk interior regions of the grains due to different defect formation energies in the structurally different regions, accompanied by the formation of space charge zones. Using atomistic calculations based on classical interatomic potentials, we derive and discuss optimized structures of the symmetric tilt grain boundaries $Σ$5(210)[001] and $Σ$5(310)[001], and of the asymmetric tilt grain boundary (430)[001]||(100)[001] in the electroceramic perovskite materials SrTiO$_3$, BaTiO$_3$, and BaZrO$_3$. We present profiles of oxygen vacancy formation energies across those GBs and discuss their dependence on composition and grain boundary type.

We present a density functional theory analysis of the negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defect complex located at or close to the core of 30$^\circ$ and 90$^\circ$ partial glide dislocations in diamond. Formation energies, electronic densities of states, structural deformations, hyperfine structure and zero-field splitting parameters of NV centers in such structurally distorted environments are analyzed. The formation energies of the NV centers are up to 3 eV lower at the dislocation cores compared to the bulk values of crystalline diamond. We found that the lowest energy configuration of the NV center at the core of a 30$^\circ$ partial glide dislocation is realized when the axis of the NV center is oriented parallel to the dislocation line. This special configuration has a stable triplet ground state. Its hyperfine constants and zero field splitting parameters deviate by only 3% from values of the bulk NV center. Hence, this is an interesting candidate for a self-assembly of a linear array of NV centers along the dislocation line.

We investigate grain boundaries (GBs) in the cubic inverse Heusler phase Fe$_2$CoGa by means of first principles calculations based on density functional theory. Besides the energetic stability, the analysis focuses on the magnetic properties of a set of 16 GB structures in this intermetallic phase. We determine the integrated excess magnetization across the GB and analyze it in terms of the projected local magnetic moments of the atoms and their local Voronoi volumes. The results are systematically compared to those of corresponding GBs in body-centered cubic (bcc) Fe. The studied GBs in Fe$_2$CoGa may have a considerably increased magnetization at the GB, up to more than twice as much as in bcc Fe, depending on the GB type, while geometrical quantities like GB widening or local GB excess volume distributions are similar for both phases. We explain this difference by the higher flexibility of the ternary Fe$_2$CoGa phase in compensating the disturbance of a crystal defect by structural relaxation. The GB structures therefore have a lower energy accompanied with increased local magnetic moments of the Co and half of the Fe atoms within a distance of a few angstrom around the GB plane.

Artificial electrostatic potentials can be present in supercells constructed for atomistic simulations of surfaces and interfaces in ionic crystals. Treating the ions as point charges, we systematically derive an electrostatic formalism for model systems of increasing complexity, both neutral and charged, and with either open or periodic boundary conditions. This allows to correctly interpret results of classical atomistic simulations which are directly affected by the appearance of these potentials. We demonstrate our approach at the example of a strontium titanite (SrTiO$_3$) supercell containing an asymmetric tilt grain boundary. The formation energies of charged oxygen vacancies and the relaxed interface structure are calculated based on an interatomic rigid-ion potential, and the results are analyzed in consideration of the electrostatic effects.

We assess the stability and electronic properties of the NV$^-$ center and study their dependence on the H:N ratio of the surface termination. The formation energy, the electronic density of states, the hyperfine structure and zero-field splitting parameters of an NV$^-$ center are analyzed as function of its distance and orientation to the surface. We find stable NV$^-$ centers with bulk-like properties at distances of at least $\sim8$ Angstroem from the surface provided that the surface termination consists of at least 25\% substitutional nitrogen atoms. Our results indicate that axial NV centers near a flat 100\% N-terminated (111) surface are the optimal choice for NV-based quantum sensing applications as they are the least influenced by the proximity of the surface.

Since it is now possible to record vibrational spectra at nanometer scales in the electron microscope it is of interest to explore whether defects such as dislocations or grain boundaries will result in measurable changes of the spectra. Phonon densities of states were calculated for a set of high angle grain boundaries in silicon. Since these boundaries are modeled by supercells with up to 160 atoms, the density of states was calculated by taking the Fourier transform of the velocity-velocity autocorrelation function from molecular dynamics simulations based on new supercells doubled in each direction. In select cases the results were checked on the original supercells with fewer atoms by comparison with the densities of states obtained by diagonalizing the dynamical matrix calculated using density functional theory. Near the core of the grain boundary the height of the optic phonon peak in the density of states at 60 meV was suppressed relative to features due to acoustic phonons that are largely unchanged relative to their bulk values. This can be attributed to the variation in the strength of bonds in grain boundary core regions where there is a range of bond lengths. It also means that changes in the density of states intrinsic to grain boundaries are unlikely to affect thermal conductivity at ambient temperatures, which are most likely dominated by the scattering of acoustic phonons.

The defect chemistry of perovskite compounds is directly related to the stoichiometry and to the valence states of the transition-metal ions. Defect engineering has become increasingly popular as it offers the possibility to influence the catalytic properties of perovskites for applications in energy storage and conversion devices such as solid-oxide fuel- and electrolyzer cells. LaFeO$_3$ (LFO) can be regarded as a base compound of the family of catalytically active perovskites La$_{1-x}$A$_x$Fe$_{1-y}$B$_y$O$_{3-δ}$, for which the defect chemistry as well as the electronic and ionic conductivity can be tuned by substitution on cationic sites. Combining theoretical and experimental approaches, we explore the suitability for A-site vacancy engineering, namely the feasibility of actively manipulating the valence state of Fe and the concentration of point defects by synthesizing La-deficient LFO. Formation energies and concentrations of point defects were determined as a function of processing conditions by first-principles DFT+U calculations. Based on the results, significant compositional deviations from stoichiometric LFO cannot be expected by providing rich or poor conditions of the oxidic precursor compounds (Fe$_2$O$_3$ and La$_2$O$_3$) in a solid-state processing route. In the experimental part, LFO was synthesized with a targeted La-site deficiency. We analyze the resulting phases by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, (scanning) transmission electron microscopy in combination with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and electron energy-loss spectrometry. Instead of a variation of the La/Fe ratio, a mixture of the two phases Fe$_2$O$_3$ and LFO was observed, resulting in an invariant charge state of Fe, in line with the theoretical results. We discuss our findings with respect to partly differing assumptions made in previous studies on this material system.

Oxygen vacancies have been identified to play an important role in accelerating grain growth in polycrystalline perovskite-oxide ceramics. In order to advance the fundamental understanding of growth mechanisms at the atomic scale, classical atomistic simulations were carried out to investigate the atomistic structures and oxygen vacancy formation energies at grain boundaries in the prototypical perovskite-oxide material SrTiO$_3$. In this work, we focus on two symmetric tilt grain boundaries, namely $Σ$5(310)[001] and $Σ$5(210)[001]. A one-dimensional continuum model is adapted to determine the electrostatic potential induced by charged lattice planes in atomistic structure models containing grain boundaries and point defects. By means of this model, electrostatic artifacts, which are inherent to supercell models with periodic or open boundary conditions, can be taken into account and corrected properly. We report calculated formation energies of oxygen vacancies on all the oxygen sites across boundaries between two misoriented grains, and we analyze and discuss the formation-energy values with respect to local charge densities at the vacant sites.

We present a density functional theory analysis of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond which are located in the vicinity of extended defects, namely intrinsic stacking faults (ISF), extrinsic stacking faults (ESF), and coherent twin boundaries (CTB) on \{111\} planes in diamond crystals. Several sites for NV centers close to the extended defects are energetically preferred with respect to the bulk crystal. This indicates that NV centers may be enriched at extended defects. We report the hyperfine structure (HFS) and zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameters of the NV centers at the extended defects which typically deviate by about 10\% but in some cases up to 90\% from their bulk values. Furthermore, we find that the influence of the extended defects on the NV centers is of short range: NV centers that are about three double layers (corresponding to $\sim6$ $\mathring{A}$ away from defect planes already show bulk-like behavior.

Late transition-metal oxides with small charge-transfer energy $Δ$ raise issues for state-of-the-art correlated electronic structure schemes such as the combination of density functional theory (DFT) with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The accentuated role of the oxygen valence orbitals in these compounds asks for an enhanced description of ligand-based correlations. Utilizing the rocksalt-like NiO as an example, we present an advancement of charge self-consistent DFT+DMFT by including self-interaction correction (SIC) applied to oxygen. This introduces explicit onsite O correlations as well as an improved treatment of intersite $p-d$ correlations. Due to the efficient SIC incorporation in a pseudopotential form, the DFT+sicDMFT framework is an advanced but still versatile method to address the interplay of charge-transfer and Mott-Hubbard physics. We revisit the spectral features of stoichiometric NiO and reveal the qualitative sufficiency of local DMFT self-energies in describing spectral peak structures usually associated with explicit nonlocal processes. For Li$_x$Ni$_{1-x}$O, prominent in-gap states are verified by the present theoretical study.

Using density functional theory (DFT), a systematic computational screening of 18 NZP compounds, namely LiX$_2$(LO$_4$)$_3$ with X = Ti, V, Fe, Zr, Nb, Ru, Hf, Ta, Os, and L = P, Mn is performed with respect to their activation energies for vacancy-mediated Li migration. It is shown how the different ionic radii of the cationic substitutions influence structural characteristics such as the octahedron volumes around Li ions on the initial and transition state sites, which affect the activation energies (''composition-structure-property'' relationships). The prevalent assumption that structural bottlenecks formed by triangularly arranged oxygen atoms at a certain location along the migration path determine the energy barriers for Li migration is not supported by the DFT results. Instead, the ionic neighborhood of the migrating ion in the initial and in the transition state needs to be taken into account to relate the structure to the activation energies. This conclusion applies to Na containing NZP compounds as well.

Large-scale atomistic simulations with classical potentials can provide valuable insights into microscopic deformation mechanisms and defect-defect interactions in materials. Unfortunately, these assets often come with the uncertainty of whether the observed mechanisms are based on realistic physical phenomena or whether they are artifacts of the employed material models. One such example is the often reported occurrence of stable planar faults (PFs) in body-centered cubic (bcc) metals subjected to high strains, e.g., at crack tips or in strained nano-objects. In this paper, we study the strain dependence of the generalized stacking fault energy (GSFE) of {110} planes in various bcc metals with material models of increasing sophistication, i.e., (modified) embedded atom method, angular-dependent, Tersoff, and bond-order potentials as well as density functional theory. We show that under applied tensile strains the GSFE curves of many classical potentials exhibit a local minimum which gives rise to the formation of stable PFs. These PFs do not appear when more sophisticated material models are used and have thus to be regarded as artifacts of the potentials. We demonstrate that the local GSFE minimum is not formed for reasons of symmetry and we recommend including the determination of the strain-dependent (110) GSFE as a benchmark for newly developed potentials.

This paper presents the techniques used to monitor radiation damage in the LHCb Tracker Turicensis during the LHC Runs 1 and 2. Bulk leakage currents in the silicon sensors were monitored continuously, while the full depletion voltages of the sensors were estimated at regular intervals by performing dedicated scans of the charge collection efficiency as a function of the applied bias voltage. Predictions of the expected leakage currents and full depletion voltages are extracted from the simulated radiation profile, the luminosity delivered by the LHC, and the thermal history of the silicon sensors. Good agreement between measurements and predictions is found.

Machine Learning (ML) plays an increasingly important role in the discovery and design of new materials. In this paper, we demonstrate the potential of ML for materials research using hard-magnetic phases as an illustrative case. We build kernel-based ML models to predict optimal chemical compositions for new permanent magnets, which are key components in many green-energy technologies. The magnetic-property data used for training and testing the ML models are obtained from a combinatorial high-throughput screening based on density-functional theory calculations. Our straightforward choice of describing the different configurations enables the subsequent use of the ML models for compositional optimization and thereby the prediction of promising substitutes of state-of-the-art magnetic materials like Nd$_2$Fe$_{14}$B with similar intrinsic hard-magnetic properties but a lower amount of critical rare-earth elements.

A density functional theory study of atomic defects and dopants in ternary Z-phase transition-metal nitrides CrMN with M=V, Nb, or Ta is presented. Various defect formation energies of native point defects and of substitutional atoms of other metal elements which are abundant in the steel as well, are evaluated. The dependence thereof on the thermodynamic environment, i.e. the chemical conditions of a growing Z-phase precipitate, is studied and different growth scenarios are compared. The results obtained may help to relate results of experimental atomic-scale analysis, by atom probe tomography or transmission electron microscopy, to the theoretical modeling of the formation process of the Z phase from binary transition metal nitrides.

The cross-sections in the covered $η$ range are $72.0\pm 0.3\pm6.8~μ$b and $144\pm 1\pm 21~μ$b for 7 and 13 TeV. The ratio is $2.00\pm0.02\pm0.26$, where the quoted uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The agreement with theoretical expectation is good at 7 TeV, but differs somewhat at 13 TeV. The measured ratio of cross-sections is larger at lower $η$ than the model prediction.

The analysis uses $\overline{B}\to D^{*+} μ^- X$, and charge-conjugate decays, where $D^{*+}\to D^0 π^+$, and $D^0\to K^{\mp} π^{\pm}$. The $pp$ collision data are recorded by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$. The data are analyzed under three hypotheses: (i) mixing assuming $C\!P$ symmetry, (ii) mixing assuming no direct $C\!P$ violation in the Cabibbo-favored or doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decay amplitudes, and (iii) mixing allowing either direct $C\!P$ violation and/or $C\!P$ violation in the superpositions of flavor eigenstates defining the mass eigenstates. The data are also combined with those from a previous LHCb study of $D^0\to K π$ decays from a disjoint set of $ D^{*+} $ candidates produced directly in $pp$ collisions. In all cases, the data are consistent with the hypothesis of $C\!P$ symmetry.

A measurement of the time-integrated $CP$ asymmetry in the Cabibbo-suppressed decay $D^0\rightarrow K^-K^+$ is performed using pp collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb$^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The flavour of the charm meson at production is determined from the charge of the pion in $D^{*+}\rightarrow D^0 π^+$ and $D^{*-}\rightarrow \bar{D^0} π^-$ decays. The time-integrated $CP$ asymmetry $A_{CP}(K^-K^+)$ is obtained assuming negligible $CP$ violation in charm mixing and in Cabibbo-favoured $D^0\rightarrow K^-π^+$, $D^+\rightarrow K^-π^+π^+$ and $D^+\rightarrow \bar{K^0}π^+$ decays used as calibration channels. It is found to be $A_{CP}(K^-K^+)=(0.14\pm0.15(stat)\pm0.10(syst))\%$. A combination of this result with previous LHCb measurements yields $A_{CP}(K^-K^+)=(0.04\pm0.12(stat)\pm0.10(syst))\%$, $A_{CP}(π^-π^+)=(0.07\pm0.14(stat)\pm0.11(syst))\%$. These are the most precise measurements from a single experiment. The result for $A_{CP}(K^-K^+)$ is the most precise determination of a time-integrated $CP$ asymmetry in the charm sector to date, and neither measurement shows evidence of CP asymmetry.

The data set corresponds to integrated luminosities of 1 and 2 fb$^{-1}$ at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, respectively. This decay is observed for the first time, with a significance of more than five standard deviations. The analysis also results in an improved measurement of the branching fraction for the $B_s^0\to π^+π^-$ decay. The measured branching fractions are $BR(B^0\to K^+K^-) = (7.80 \pm 1.27 \pm 0.81 \pm 0.21) \times 10^{-8}$ and $BR(B_s^0\toπ^+π^-) = (6.91 \pm 0.54 \pm 0.63 \pm 0.19 \pm 0.40) \times 10^{-7}$. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, the third is due to the uncertainty on the $B^0\to K^+π^-$ branching fraction used as a normalization. For the $B_s^0$ mode, the fourth accounts for the uncertainty on the ratio of the probabilities for $b$ quarks to hadronize into $B_s^0$ and $B^0$ mesons.

Differences in the behaviour of matter and antimatter have been observed in $K$ and $B$ meson decays, but not yet in any baryon decay. Such differences are associated with the non-invariance of fundamental interactions under the combined charge-conjugation and parity transformations, known as $C\!P$ violation. Using data from the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, a search is made for $C\!P$-violating asymmetries in the decay angle distributions of $Λ^0_b$ baryons decaying to $pπ^-π^+π^-$ and $pπ^-K^+K^-$ final states. These four-body hadronic decays are a promising place to search for sources of $C\!P$ violation both within and beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. We find evidence for $C\!P$ violation in $Λ^0_b$ to $pπ^-π^+π^-$ decays with a statistical significance corresponding to 3.3 standard deviations including systematic uncertainties. This represents the first evidence for $C\!P$ violation in the baryon sector.

Measurements of the differential branching fraction and angular moments of the decay $B^0 \to K^+ π^- μ^+ μ^-$ in the $K^+π^-$ invariant mass range $1330<m(K^+ π^-)<1530~MeV/c^2$ are presented. Proton-proton collision data are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 $fb^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment. Differential branching fraction measurements are reported in five bins of the invariant mass squared of the dimuon system, $q^2$, between 0.1 and 8.0 $GeV^2/c^4$. For the first time, an angular analysis sensitive to the S-, P- and D-wave contributions of this rare decay is performed. The set of 40 normalised angular moments describing the decay is presented for the $q^2$ range 1.1--6.0 $GeV^2/c^4$.

A time-dependent analysis of the $B^{0}_{s} \to φγ$ decay rate is conducted to determine the parameter ${\mathcal{A}}^Δ$, which is related to the ratio of right- over left-handed photon polarization amplitudes in $b \to s γ$ transitions. A value of ${\mathcal{A}}^Δ=-0.98^{\,+0.46\,+0.23}_{\,-0.52\,-0.20}$ is measured. This result is consistent with the Standard Model prediction within two standard deviations.

The $CP$ violation observables $S$ and $C$ in the decay channel $B^0 \!\rightarrow D^+ D^-$ are determined from a sample of proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$. The observable $S$ describes $CP$ violation in the interference between mixing and the decay amplitude, and $C$ parametrizes direct $CP$ violation in the decay. The following values are obtained from a flavor-tagged, decay-time-dependent analysis: \begin{align*}
S &= -0.54 \, ^{+0.17}_{-0.16} \, \text{(stat)} \pm 0.05 \, \text{(syst)}\,,\newline
C &= \phantom{-}0.26 \, ^{+0.18}_{-0.17} \, \text{(stat)} \pm 0.02 \, \text{(syst)}\,. \end{align*} These values provide evidence for $CP$ violation at a significance level of 4.0 standard deviations. The phase shift due to higher-order Standard Model corrections is constrained to a small value of \begin{align*}
Δφ= -0.16\,^{+0.19}_{-0.21}\,\text{rad}\,. \end{align*}

The electrons are required to have more than $20\,$GeV of transverse momentum and to lie between 2.00 and 4.25 in pseudorapidity. The inclusive $W$ production cross-sections, where the $W$ decays to $eν$, are measured to be \begin{equation*} σ_{W^{+} \to e^{+}ν_{e}}=1124.4\pm 2.1\pm 21.5\pm 11.2\pm 13.0\,\mathrm{pb}, \end{equation*} \begin{equation*} σ_{W^{-} \to e^{-}\barν_{e}}=\,\,\,809.0\pm 1.9\pm 18.1\pm\,\,\,7.0\pm \phantom{0}9.4\,\mathrm{pb}, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second are systematic, the third are due to the knowledge of the LHC beam energy and the fourth are due to the luminosity determination. Differential cross-sections as a function of the electron pseudorapidity are measured. The $W^{+}/W^{-}$ cross-section ratio and production charge asymmetry are also reported. Results are compared with theoretical predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Finally, in a precise test of lepton universality, the ratio of $W$ boson branching fractions is determined to be \begin{equation*} \mathcal{B}(W \to eν)/\mathcal{B}(W \to μν)=1.020\pm 0.002\pm 0.019, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

The Dalitz plot analysis technique is used to study the resonant substructures of $B^{-} \to D^{+} π^{-} π^{-}$ decays in a data sample corresponding to 3.0 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012. A model-independent analysis of the angular moments demonstrates the presence of resonances with spins 1, 2 and 3 at high $D^{+}π^{-}$ mass. The data are fitted with an amplitude model composed of a quasi-model-independent function to describe the $D^{+}π^{-}$ S-wave together with virtual contributions from the $D^{*}(2007)^{0}$ and $B^{*0}$ states, and components corresponding to the $D^{*}_{2}(2460)^{0}$, $D^{*}_{1}(2680)^{0}$, $D^{*}_{3}(2760)^{0}$ and $D^{*}_{2}(3000)^{0}$ resonances. The masses and widths of these resonances are determined together with the branching fractions for their production in $B^{-} \to D^{+} π^{-} π^{-}$ decays. The $D^{+}π^{-}$ S-wave has phase motion consistent with that expected due to the presence of the $D^{*}_{0}(2400)^{0}$ state. These results constitute the first observations of the $D^{*}_{3}(2760)^{0}$ and $D^{*}_{2}(3000)^{0}$ resonances.

Using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3 fb^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment in $pp$ collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, the effective lifetime in the $B^0_s \rightarrow J/ψη$ decay mode, $τ_{\textrm{eff}}$, is measured to be $τ_{\textrm{eff}} = 1.479 \pm 0.034~\textrm{(stat)} \pm 0.011 ~\textrm{(syst)}$ ps. Assuming $CP$ conservation, $τ_{\textrm{eff}}$ corresponds to the lifetime of the light $B_s^0$ mass eigenstate. This is the first measurement of the effective lifetime in this decay mode.

Abstract:
A study of $B_c^+\to K^+K^-π^+$ decays is performed for the first time using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment in $pp$ collisions at centre-of-mass energies of $7$ and $8$ TeV. Evidence for the decay $B_c^+\toχ_{c0}(\to K^+K^-)π^+$ is reported with a significance of 4.0 standard deviations, resulting in the measurement of…

Evidence for the decay $B_c^+\toχ_{c0}(\to K^+K^-)π^+$ is reported with a significance of 4.0 standard deviations, resulting in the measurement of $\frac{σ(B_c^+)}{σ(B^+)}\times\mathcal{B}(B_c^+\toχ_{c0}π^+)$ to be $(9.8^{+3.4}_{-3.0}(\mathrm{stat})\pm 0.8(\mathrm{syst}))\times 10^{-6}$. Here $\mathcal{B}$ denotes a branching fraction while $σ(B_c^+)$ and $σ(B^+)$ are the production cross-sections for $B_c^+$ and $B^+$ mesons. An indication of $\bar b c$ weak annihilation is found for the region $m(K^-π^+)<1.834\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V\!/}c^2$, with a significance of 2.4 standard deviations.

The first full amplitude analysis of $B^+\to J/ψφK^+$ with $J/ψ\toμ^+μ^-$, $φ\to K^+K^-$ decays is performed with a data sample of 3 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data collected at $\sqrt{s}=7$ and $8$ TeV with the LHCb detector. The quantum numbers of these structures are determined with significance of at least $4$ standard deviations. The lightest has mass consistent with, but width much larger than, previous measurements of the claimed $X(4140)$ state. The model includes significant contributions from a number of expected kaon excitations, including the first observation of the $K^{*}(1680)^+\toφK^+$ transition.

A full amplitude analysis of $Λ_b^0 \to J/ψp π^-$ decays is performed with a data sample acquired with the LHCb detector from 7 and 8 TeV $pp$ collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$. A significantly better description of the data is achieved when, in addition to the previously observed nucleon excitations $N\to pπ^-$, either the $P_c(4380)^+$ and $P_c(4450)^+\to J/ψp$ states, previously observed in $Λ_b^0 \to J/ψp K^-$ decays, or the $Z_c(4200)^-\to J/ψπ^-$ state, previously reported in $B^0 \to J/ψK^+ π^-$ decays, or all three, are included in the amplitude models. The data support a model containing all three exotic states, with a significance of more than three standard deviations. Within uncertainties, the data are consistent with the $P_c(4380)^+$ and $P_c(4450)^+$ production rates expected from their previous observation taking account of Cabibbo suppression.
