Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering (RIXS) spectra of hematite were measured at the Fe L3-edge for heteroepitaxial thin films which were undoped and doped with 1% Ti, Sn or Zn, in the energy loss range in excess of 1 eV to study electronic transitions. The spectra were measured for several momentum transfers (q), conducted at both low temperature (T=14K) and room temperature. While we can not rule out dispersive features possibly owing to propagating excitations, the coarse envelopes of the general spectra did not appreciably change shape with q, implying that the bulk of the observed L-edge RIXS intensity originates from (mostly) non-dispersive ligand field (LF) excitations. Summing the RIXS spectra over q and comparing the results at T=14 K to those at T=300 K, revealed pronounced temperature effects, including an intensity change and energy shift of the 1.4 eV peak, a broadband intensity increase of the 3-4 eV range, and higher energy features. The q-summed spectra and their temperature dependences are virtually identical for nearly all of the samples with different dopants, save for the temperature dependence of the Ti-doped sample's spectrum, which we attribute to being affected by a large number of free charge carriers. Comparing with magnetization measurements for different temperatures and do**s likewise did not show a clear correlation between the RIXS spectra and the magnetic ordering states. To clarify the excited states, we performed spin multiplet calculations which were in excellent agreement with the RIXS spectra over a wide energy range and provide detailed electronic descriptions of the excited states. The implications of these findings to the photoconversion efficiency of hematite photoanodes is discussed.

The spatial collection efficiency portrays the driving forces and loss mechanisms in photovoltaic and photoelectrochemical devices. It is defined as the fraction of photogenerated charge carriers created at a specific point within the device that contribute to the photocurrent. In stratified planar structures, the spatial collection efficiency can be extracted out of photocurrent action spectra measurements empirically, with few a priori assumptions. Although this method was applied to photovoltaic cells made of well-understood materials, it has never been used to study unconventional materials such as metal-oxide semiconductors that are often employed in photoelectrochemical cells. This perspective shows the opportunities that this method has to offer for investigating new materials and devices with unknown properties. The relative simplicity of the method, and its applicability to operando performance characterization, makes it an important tool for analysis and design of new photovoltaic and photoelectrochemical materials and devices.

The photoelectrochemical behavior of a planar 1 cm2 thick Ti-doped hematite film deposited on F:SnO2 coated glass was studied with both front and back illumination. Despite low quantum efficiency, photocurrent was observed upon back illumination with low wavelengths, indicating that some photogenerated holes are able to traverse at least 700 nm across the hematite film and effectively oxidize water. This cannot be accounted for using the commonly accepted hole collection length of hematite based on fitting to the Gartner model. Furthermore, under back illumination, 450 nm excitation resulted in increased photocurrent as compared to 530 nm excitation despite most of the light being absorbed further away from the surface. These results demonstrate that the photocurrent is strongly dependent on the optical excitation wavelength, and related to both delocalized holes with long lifetime and localized excitations rather than only being dependent on the proximity of the absorption to the surface.

We report our study of twin domains in $La_{2-x}Sr_x CuO_4$ under uniaxial pressure. Using bulk-sensitive x-ray microdiffraction in Laue geometry, we image the distribution of twin domains at room temperature. When compressive uniaxial pressure is applied along one of the in-plane crystallographic axes, the domain population changes dramatically. We observe that the twin domain with shorter lattice parameter along the direction of pressure is unstable under compression, and disappears completely with only moderate pressure. On the other hand, application of tensile pressure changes the domain structure only slightly, demonstrating the asymmetric response of the sample to uniaxial pressure. Our observations suggest that a crystal's response to uniaxial pressure is complex and could deviate easily from the linear-response regime.

The spin states at the surface of epitaxial thin films of hematite, both undoped and doped with 1% Ti, Sn or Zn, respectively, were probed with x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD) spectroscopy. Morin transitions were observed for the undoped (T_M~200 K) and Sn-doped (T_M~300 K) cases, while Zn and Ti-doped samples were always in the high and low temperature phases, respectively. In contrast to what has been reported for bulk hematite doped with the tetravalent ions Sn4+ and Ti4+, for which T_M dramatically decreases, these dopants substantially increase T_M in thin films, far exceeding the bulk values. The normalized Fe LII-edge dichroism for T<T_M does not strongly depend on do** or temperature, except for an apparent increase of the peak amplitudes for T<100 K. We observed magnetic field-induced inversions of the dichroism peaks. By applying a magnetic field of 6.5 T on the Ti-doped sample, a transition into the T>T_M state was achieved. The temperature dependence of the critical field for the Sn-doped sample was characterized in detail. It was demonstrated the sample-to-sample variations of the Fe LIII-edge spectra were, for the most part, determined solely by the spin orientation state. Calculations of the polarization-depedent spectra based on a spin-multiplet model were in reasonable agreement with the experiment and showed a mixed excitation character of the peak structures.

We investigate whether the spin or charge degrees of freedom are responsible for the nodal gap in underdoped cuprates by performing inelastic neutron scattering and x-ray diffraction measurements on La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, which is on the edge of the antiferromagnetic phase. We found that fluctuating incommensurate spin-density-wave (SDW) with a the bottom part of an hourglass dispersion exists even in this magnetic sample. The strongest component of these fluctuations diminishes at the same temperature where the nodal gap opens. X-ray scattering measurements on the same crystal show no signature of charge-density-wave (CDW). Therefore, we suggest that the nodal gap in the electronic band of this cuprate opens due to fluctuating SDW with no contribution from CDW.

Electronic spin and orbital (dd) excitation spectra of (Ca{x}La{1-x})(Ba{1.75-x}La{0.25+x})Cu{3}O{y} samples are measured by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). In this compound, Tc of samples with identical hole do**s is strongly affected by the Ca/Ba substitution x due to subtle variations in the lattice constants, while crystal symmetry and disorder as measured by line-widths are x independent. We examine two extreme values of x and two extreme values of hole-do** content y corresponding to antiferromagnetic and superconducting states. The x dependence of the spin mode energies is approximately the same for both the antiferromagnetic and superconducting samples. This clearly demonstrates that RIXS is sensitive to J even in doped samples. A positive correlation between the superexchange J and the maximum of Tc at optimal do** Tc^{max} is observed. We also measured the x dependence of the d_{xy} -> d_{x^2-y^2} and d_{xz/yz} -> d_{x^2-y^2} orbital splittings. We infer that the effect of the unresolved d_{3z^2-r^2} -> d_{x^2-y^2} excitation on Tc^{max} is much smaller than the effect of J. There appears to be dispersion in the d_{xy} -> d_{x^2-y^2} peak of up to 0.05 eV. Our fitting of the peaks furthermore indicates an asymmetric dispersion for the d_{xz/yz} -> d_{x^2-y^2} excitation. A peak at ~0.8 eV is also observed, and attributed to a dd excitation in the chain layer.

We measured phonon dispersion in single crystal EuTiO$_3$ using inelastic x-ray scattering. A structural transition to an antiferrodistortive phase was found at a critical temperature $T_0$=287$\pm$1 K using powder and single-crystal x-ray diffraction. Clear softening of the zone boundary \emph{R}-point \textbf{q}=(0.5 0.5 0.5) acoustic phonon shows this to be a displacive transition. The mode energy plotted against reduced temperature could be seen to nearly overlap that of $\rm SrTiO_3$, suggesting a universal scaling relation. Phonon dispersion was measured along $Γ$-$X$ (0 0 0)$\rightarrow$(0.5 0 0). Mode eigenvectors were obtained from a shell model consistent with the \textbf{q}-dependence of intensity and energy, which also showed that the dispersion is nominally the same as in $\rm SrTiO_3$ at room temperature, but corrected for mass. The lowest energy optical mode, determined to be of Slater character, softens approximately linearly with temperature until the 70-100 K range where the softening stops, and at low temperature, the mode disperses linearly near the zone center.

We report Eu L3-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) investigation of the electronic structure of EuB6. We observe that the RIXS spectral weight around 1.1 eV increases dramatically when the system is cooled below the ferromagnetic ordering temperature and follows the magnetic order parameter. This spectral feature is attributed to the inter-site excitation from the local 4f orbital to the spin-split 5d orbital on the neighboring site, illustrating the essential role of exchange splitting of the conducting electrons. Based on our density functional theory calculations, the RIXS data suggest that EuB6 at low temperature can be consistently described with a semi-metallic electronic structure with incomplete spin-polarization. We propose routes to achieve half-metallicity in EuB6, which utilize the strong tunability of the electronic structure against gate voltage, strain, and magnetic field.

The RIXS spectra measured at three high-symmetry momentum transfer (\textbf{q}) positions are compared as a function of do** and for the different dopants. The spectra in the energy range 1-6 eV can be described with three broad peaks, which evolve systematically with increased do**. The most systematic trend was observed for \textbf{q}=($π$, 0) corresponding to the zone boundary. As hole do** increased, the spectral weight transfer from high energies to low energies is nearly linear with \emph{x} at this \textbf{q}. We interpret the peaks as interband transitions in the context of existing band models for this system, assigning them to Zhang-Rice band$\rightarrow$upper Hubbard band, lower-lying band$\rightarrow$upper Hubbard band, and lower-lying band$\rightarrow$Zhang-Rice band transitions. The spectrum of stripe-ordered LBCO was also measured, and found to be identical to the correspondingly doped LSCO, except for a relative enhancement of the near-infrared peak intensity around 1.5-1.7 eV. The temperature dependence of this near-infrared peak in LBCO was more pronounced than for other parts of the spectrum, continuously decreasing in intensity as the temperature was raised from 25 K to 300 K. Finally, we find that 4\% Ni substitution in the Cu site has a similar effect on the spectra as does Sr substitution in the La site.

We present a comprehensive study of the temperature and do** dependence of the 500 meV peak observed at ${\bf q}=(π,0)$ in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments on $\rm La_2CuO_4$. The intensity of this peak persists above the Néel temperature (T$_{N}$=320 K), but decreases gradually with increasing temperature, reaching zero at around T=500 K. The peak energy decreases with temperature in close quantitative accord with the behavior of the two-magnon $\rm B_{1g}$ Raman peak in $\rm La_2CuO_4$, and with suitable rescaling, agrees with the Raman peak shifts in $\rm EuBa_2Cu_3O_6$ and $\rm K_2NiF_4$. The overall dispersion of this excitation in the Brillouin zone is found to be in agreement with theoretical calculations for a two-magnon excitation. Upon do**, the peak intensity decreases analogous to the Raman mode intensity and appears to track the do** dependence of the spin correlation length. Taken together, these observations strongly suggest that the 500 meV mode is magnetic in character and is likely a two-magnon excitation.

The upper Hubbard band, identified with strong correlation effects, is not observed on the oxygen K edge, while the lowest-energy prepeak gains less intensity than expected above p ~ 0.21. This suggests a breakdown of the Zhang-Rice singlet approximation and a loss of correlation effects or a significant shift in the most fundamental parameters of the system, rendering single-band Hubbard models inapplicable. Such fundamental changes suggest that the overdoped regime may offer a distinct route to understanding in the cuprates.

The observed charge transfer edge shift, along with the low dispersion of the first charge transfer excitation are attributed to the lattice motion being coupled to the electronic system. In addition, we observe a dispersionless feature at 1.8 eV, which is associated with a d-d crystal field excitation.
