Excitation spectra of two correlated electrons in a quantum dot
Abstract: Measurements and a theoretical interpretation of the excitation spectrum of a two-electron quantum dot fabricated on a parabolic Ga[Al]As quantum well are reported. Experimentally, excited states are found beyond the well-known lowest singlet- and triplet states. These states can be reproduced in an exact diagonalization calculation of a parabolic dot with moderate in-plane anisotropy. The calcula… ▽ More

Optimized stray-field-induced enhancement of the electron spin precession by buried Fe gates
Abstract: The magnetic stray field from Fe gates is used to modify the spin precession frequency of InGaAs/GaAs quantum-well electrons in an external magnetic field. By using an etching process to position the gates directly in the plane of the quantum well, the stray-field influence on the spin precession increases significantly compared with results from previous studies with top-gated structures. In li… ▽ More

Gate tunability of stray-field-induced electron spin precession in a GaAs/InGaAs quantum well below an interdigitated magnetized Fe grating
Abstract: Time-resolved Faraday rotation is used to measure the coherent electron spin precession in a GaAs/InGaAs quantum well below an interdigitated magnetized Fe grating. We show that the electron spin precession frequency can be modified by applying a gate voltage of opposite polarity to neighboring bars. A tunability of the precession frequency of 0.5 GHz/V has been observed. Modulating the gate pot… ▽ More

Quantum dots based on parabolic quantum wells: importance of electronic correlations
Abstract: We present measurements and theoretical interpretation of the magnetic field dependent excitation spectra of a two-electron quantum dot. The quantum dot is based on an Al$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$As parabolic quantum well with effective $g^\star$-factor close to zero. Results of tunneling spectroscopy of the four lowest states are compared to exact diagonalization calculations and a generalized Heitler--Lon… ▽ More

Stray-field-induced modification of coherent spin dynamics
Abstract: Electron spins in an InGaAs semiconductor quantum well are used as a magnetometer of magnetic stray-fields from patterned Fe stripes. Using time-resolved Faraday rotation, the coherent precession of quantum-well spins in the inhomogeneous field below the Fe stripes is measured for varying magnetic fields. Comparing with reference stripes made of Au, we find an enhancement of the spin precession… ▽ More

Two-subband quantum Hall effect in parabolic quantum wells
Abstract: The low-temperature magnetoresistance of parabolic quantum wells displays pronounced minima between integer filling factors. Concomitantly the Hall effect exhibits overshoots and plateau-like features next to well-defined ordinary quantum Hall plateaus. These effects set in with the occupation of the second subband. We discuss our observations in the context of single-particle Landau fan charts… ▽ More

Excitation spectrum of two correlated electrons in a lateral quantum dot with negligible Zeeman splitting
Abstract: The excitation spectrum of a two-electron quantum dot is investigated by tunneling spectroscopy in conjuction with theoretical calculations. The dot made from a material with negligible Zeeman splitting has a moderate spatial anisotropy leading to a splitting of the two lowest triplet states at zero magnetic field. In addition to the well-known triplet excitation at zero magnetic field, two addi… ▽ More

Density dependence of microwave induced magneto-resistance oscillations in a two-dimensional electron gas
Abstract: We have measured the magneto-resistance of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) under continuous microwave irradiation as a function of electron density and mobility tuned with a metallic top-gate. In the entire range of density and mobility we have investigated, we observe microwave induced oscillations of large amplitude that are B-periodic. These B-periodic oscillations are reminiscent of th… ▽ More

Macroscopic Aharonov--Bohm Effect in Type-I Superconductors
Abstract: In type-I superconducting cylinders bulk superconductivity is destroyed above the first critical current. Below the second critical current the `type-I mixed state' displays fluctuation superconductivity which contributes to the total current. A magnetic flux on the axis of the cylinder can change the second critical current by as much as 50 percent so that half a flux quantum can switch the cyl… ▽ More

Magnetotransport in C-doped AlGaAs heterostructures
Abstract: High-quality C-doped p-type AlGaAs heterostructures with mobilities exceeding 150 000 cm$^2$/Vs are investigated by low-temperature magnetotransport experiments. We find features of the fractional quantum Hall effect as well as a highly resolved Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations at low magnetic fields. This allows us to determine the densities, effective masses and mobilities of the holes populatin… ▽ More
