Uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) have attracted recent attention for sixth-generation (6G) networks due to their low cost and flexible deployment. In order to maximize the ever-increasing data rates, spectral efficiency, and wider coverage, technologies such as reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) are adapted with UAVs (UAV-RIS NOMA). However, the error performance of UAV-RIS NOMA has not been considered, yet. In this letter, we investigate the error probability of UAV-RIS NOMA systems. We also consider the practical constraints of hardware impairments (HWI) at the transceivers, inter-cell interference (ICI), and imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC). The analytical derivations are validated by Monte-Carlo simulations. Our results demonstrate that our proposed system achieves higher performance gain (more than 5 dB with increasing the number of RIS elements) with less error probability compared to UAVs without RIS. Moreover, it is found that the HWI, ICI, and imperfect SIC have shown a negative impact on the system performance.

In order to bolster future wireless networks, there has been a great deal of interest in non-terrestrial networks, especially aerial platform stations including the high altitude platform station (HAPS) and uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAV). These platforms can integrate advanced technologies such as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). In this regard, this paper proposes a multi-layer network architecture to improve the performance of conventional HAPS super-macro base station (HAPS-SMBS)-assisted UAV. The architecture includes a HAPS-SMBS, UAVs equipped with active transmissive RIS, and ground Internet of things devices. We also consider multiple-input single-output (MISO) technology, by employing multiple antennas at the HAPS-SMBS and a single antenna at the Internet of things devices. Additionally, we consider NOMA as the multiple access technology as well as the existence of hardware impairments as a practical limitation. In particular, we compare the proposed system model with three different scenarios: HAPS-SMBS-assisted UAV that are equipped with active transmissive RIS and supported by single-input single-output system, HAPS-SMBS-assisted UAV that are equipped with amplify-and-forward relaying, and HAPS-SMBS-assisted UAV-equipped with passive transmissive RIS. Sum rate and energy efficiency are used as performance metrics, and the findings demonstrate that, in comparison to all benchmarks, the proposed system yields higher performance gain. Moreover, the hardware impairment limits the system performance at high transmit power levels.

An intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system with transmit antenna selection (TAS) using orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBC) scheme is proposed in this paper. This system combines TAS and IRS with hybrid analog-digital beamforming (HBF) for 60 GHz mmWave communications in order to exploit the benefits of TAS, OSTBC, analog beamforming (ABF), and transmit digital precoding techniques. The proposed system, however, benefits from the transmit diversity gain of OSTBC scheme as well as from the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gains of both the beamformer and the IRS technology. The simulation results demonstrate that TAS-OSTBC system with zero-forcing precoding technique outperforms the conventional TAS system with OSTBC scheme. Furthermore, the bit error rate (BER) performance significantly im-proves as the number of antenna array elements increases due to providing a beamforming gain. In addition, increasing the number of reflecting elements further enhances the error performance. It is also found from the simulation results that the TAS-OSTBC system with hybrid precoding has better BER performance than that of TAS-OSTBC with ABF, and IRS-assisted systems significantly outperform the conventional systems without the IRS technology. This makes the proposed IRS-assisted system an appealing solution for internet-of-things (IoT) networks.

In this paper, deep neural network (DNN) is integrated with spatial modulation-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (SM-OFDM) technique for end-to-end data detection over Rayleigh fading channel. This proposed system directly demodulates the received symbols, leaving the channel estimation done only implicitly. Furthermore, an ensemble network is also proposed for this system. Simulation results show that the proposed DNN detection scheme has a significant advantage over classical methods when the pilot overhead and cyclic prefix (CP) are reduced, owing to its ability to learn and adjust to complicated channel conditions. Finally, the ensemble network is shown to improve the generalization of the proposed scheme, while also showing a slight improvement in its performance.

A novel space-time parallel index modulation scheme is proposed in this paper for conveying extra digital information with the aid of space and time indices. In this proposed scheme, time-indexing is cleverly performed in parallel spatial modulation (PSM) schemes using transmit antenna grou**, and referred to as time-indexed parallel spatial modulation (TI-PSM). In this scheme, transmit antennas are divided into groups to adopt TI-SM scheme in large-scale multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems with inter-channel interference (ICI) avoidance. This scheme is attractive due to both the high data rate and good performance improvement that can be achieved. The bit error rate (BER) performance of the TI-PSM scheme is evaluated and compared to that of the conventional schemes. Simulation results demonstrated that a significant improvement is achieved by the TI-PSM scheme as compared to the TI-SM and PSM schemes for the same achieved rate. It is also shown that TI-SM and TI-PSM schemes provide higher performance drop with channel estimation errors (CEEs) than the conventional SM and PSM systems. Therefore, due to the high performance improvements achieved in TI-PSM scheme, it can be effectively regarded as a promising solution for various 5G and beyond wireless networks.

Multidimensional generalized quadrature index modulation scheme is proposed in this paper for conveying extra digital information with the aid of the space, radio frequency (RF) mirrors, and time indices. Explicitly, this proposed scheme cleverly combines another proposed time-indexed generalized quadrature spatial modulation (TI-GQSM) system with media-based modulation (MBM) transmission principle using RF mirrors, and it is referred to as TI-GQSM-MBM scheme. This scheme is attractive because of both the high data rate and the significant performance improvements that can be achieved. The system performance of the proposed schemes in terms of the bit error rate (BER) is evaluated and compared to the performance of the conventional schemes. Simulation results showed that a significant improvement is achieved by the TI-GQSM-MBM scheme as compared to that of TI-GQSM, time-indexed media-based modulation (TI-MBM) and the conventional generalized quadrature spatial modulation (GQSM) schemes for the same rate. It is also demonstrated that the proposed schemes are robust to channel estimation errors (CEEs) as compared to multidimensional generalized spatial modulation (GSM) schemes. Therefore, the proposed schemes can be effectively used as an alternative solution for various 5G and beyond wireless networks.

In this paper, a combination of Space Time Block Coded Spatial Modulation with Hybrid Analog-Digital Beamforming (STBC-SM-HBF) for Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications is proposed in order to take advantage of the merits of Spatial Modulation (SM), Space-Time Block Codes (STBC), Analog Beamforming (ABF), and digital precoding techniques while avoiding their drawbacks. This proposed system benefits from the multiplexing gain of SM, from the transmit diversity gain of STBC, and from the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) gain of the beamformer. The simulation results demonstrate that the Zero Forcing (ZF) and the Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) precoded STBC-SM systems have better Bit Error Rate (BER) performance than the precoded SM systems. Moreover, the precoded SM shows a performance degradation compared to STBC-SM system. Furthermore, the BER is significantly improved by employing an array of ABF. In addition, it is demonstrated that a minimum of 2 antenna elements in the proposed scheme of STBC-SM-HBF are required to obtain better BER than that of the conventional SM and STBC-SM systems under the same spectral efficiency of 2 bits per sec per Hz.
