This study developed a novel method for detecting hypernuclear events recorded in nuclear emulsion sheets using machine learning techniques. The artificial neural network-based object detection model was trained on surrogate images created through Monte Carlo simulations and image-style transformations using generative adversarial networks. The performance of the proposed model was evaluated using $α$-decay events obtained from the J-PARC E07 emulsion data. The model achieved approximately twice the detection efficiency of conventional image processing and reduced the time spent on manual visual inspection by approximately 1/17. The established method was successfully applied to the detection of hypernuclear events. This approach is a state-of-the-art tool for discovering rare events recorded in nuclear emulsion sheets without any real data for training.

Fluorescent nuclear track detectors (FNTDs) based on Al${_2}$O${_3}$:C,Mg crystals are luminescent detectors that can be used for dosimetry and detection of charged particles and neutrons. These detectors can be utilised for imaging applications where a reasonably high track density, approximately of the order of 1 $\times$ $10^4$ tracks in an area of 100 $\times$ 100 $μ$m$^2$, is required. To investigate the reusability of FNTDs for imaging applications, we present an approach to perform optical bleaching under the required track density conditions. The reusability was assessed through seven irradiation-bleaching cycles. For the irradiation, the studied FNTD was exposed to alpha-particles from an $^{241}$Am radioactive source. The optical bleaching was performed by means of ultraviolet laser light with a wavelength of 355 nm. Three dedicated regions on a single FNTD with different accumulated track densities and bleaching conditions were investigated. After every irradiation-bleaching cycle, signal-to-noise ratio was calculated to evaluate FNTD performance. It is concluded that FNTDs can be reused at least seven times for applications where accumulation of a high track density is required.

Neutron imaging is a non-destructive inspection technique with a wide range of applications. One of the important aspects concerning neutron imaging is achieving micrometer-scale spatial resolution. Develo** a neutron detector with a high resolution is a challenging task. Neutron detectors, based on fine-grained nuclear emulsion, may be suitable for high resolution neutron imaging applications. High track density is a necessary requirement to improve the quality of neutron imaging. However, the available track analysis methods are difficult to apply under high track density conditions. Simulated images were used to determine the required track density for neutron imaging. It was concluded that a track density of the order of $10^4$ tracks per 100 $\times$ 100 $μ$m$^2$ is sufficient to utilize neutron detectors for imaging applications. The contrast resolution was also investigated for the image data sets with various track densities and neutron transmission rates. Moreover, experiments were performed for neutron imaging of the gadolinium-based gratings with known geometries. The structure of gratings was successfully resolved. The calculated 1$σ$ 10-90 \% edge response, using the gray scale optical images of the grating slit with a periodic structure of 9 $μ$m, was 0.945 $\pm$ 0.004 $μ$m.

We performed a novel $Σ^+ p$ scattering experiment at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Approximately 2400 $Σ^+ p$ elastic scattering events were identified from $4.9 \times 10^7$ tagged $Σ^+$ particles in the $Σ^+$ momentum range 0.44 -- 0.80 GeV/$c$. The differential cross sections of the $Σ^+ p$ elastic scattering were derived with much better precision than in previous experiments. The obtained differential cross sections were approximately 2 mb/sr or less, which were not as large as those predicted by the fss2 and FSS models based on the quark cluster model in the short-range region. By performing phase-shift analyses for the obtained differential cross sections, we experimentally derived the phase shifts of the $^3 S_1$ and $^1 P_1$ channels for the first time. The phase shift of the $^3 S_1$ channel, where a large repulsive core was predicted owing to the Pauli effect between quarks, was evaluated as $20^\circ<|δ_{^3S_1}|<35^\circ$. If the sign of $δ_{^3S_1}$ is assumed to be negative, the interaction in this channel is moderately repulsive, as the Nijmegen extended-sort-core models predicted.

The differential cross sections of the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction were measured accurately for the Σ- momentum (p_{Σ}) ranging from 470 to 650 MeV/c at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Precise angular information about the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction was obtained for the first time by detecting approximately 100 reaction events at each angular step of Δcosθ = 0.1. The obtained differential cross sections show slightly forward-peaking structure in the measured momentum regions. The cross sections integrated for -0.7 < cosθ < 1.0 were obtained as 22.5 +- 0.68 (stat.) +- 0.65 (syst.) mb and 15.8 +-0.83(stat.) +- 0.52 (syst.) mb for 470<p_{Σ}(MeV/c)<550 and 550<p_{Σ}(MeV/c)<650, respectively. These results show a drastic improvement compared to past measurements of the hyperon-proton scattering experiments. They will play essential roles in updating the theoretical models of the baryon-baryon interactions.

Differential cross sections of the $Σ^{-}p$ elastic scattering were derived with a drastically improved accuracy by identifying the largest statistics of about 4,500 events from 1.72 $\times$ $10^{7}$ $Σ^{-}$. The derived differential cross section shows a clear forward-peaking angular distribution for a $Σ^{-}$ momentum range from 470 to 850 MeV/$c$. The accurate data will impose a strong constraint on the theoretical models of the baryon-baryon interactions.

The feasibility of producing very-neutron-rich hypernuclei using the proposed method was analysed by applying an ultra-relativistic quantum molecular dynamics model to a $^6$Li+$^{12}$C reaction at 2 $A$ GeV. The yields of very-neutron-rich hypernuclei, signal-to-background ratios, and background contributions were investigated. The proposed method is a powerful tool for studying very-neutron-rich hypernuclei and resonance states with a hyperon for experiments employing the Super-FRS facility at FAIR and HFRS facility at HIAF.

Bound-systems of $Ξ^-$--$^{14}_{}{\rm N}$ are studied via $Ξ^-$ capture at rest followed by emission of a twin single-$Λ$ hypernucleus in the emulsion detectors. Two events forming extremely deep $Ξ^-$ bound states were obtained by analysis of a hybrid method in the E07 experiment at J-PARC and reanalysis of the E373 experiment at KEK-PS. The decay mode of one event was assigned as $Ξ^-+^{14}_{}{\rm N}\to^{5}_Λ{\rm He}$+$^{5}_Λ{\rm He}$+$^{4}_{}{\rm He}$+n. Since there are no excited states for daughter particles, the binding energy of the $Ξ^-$ hyperon, $B_{Ξ^-}$, in $^{14}_{}{\rm N}$ nucleus was uniquely determined to be 6.27 $\pm$ 0.27 MeV. Another $Ξ^-$--$^{14}_{}{\rm N}$ system via the decay $^{9}_Λ{\rm Be}$ + $^{5}_Λ{\rm He}$ + n brings a $B_{Ξ^-}$ value, 8.00 $\pm$ 0.77 MeV or 4.96 $\pm$ 0.77 MeV, where the two possible values of $B_{Ξ^-}$ correspond to the ground and the excited states of the daughter $^{9}_Λ{\rm Be}$ nucleus, respectively. Because the $B_{Ξ^-}$ values are larger than those of the previously reported events (KISO and IBUKI), which are both interpreted as the nuclear $1p$ state of the $Ξ^-$--$^{14}_{}{\rm N}$ system, these new events give the first indication of the nuclear $1s$ state of the $Ξ$ hypernucleus, $^{15}_Ξ{\rm C}$.

We developed an efficient classifier that sorts alpha-decay events from various vertex-like objects in nuclear emulsion using a convolutional neural network (CNN). Alpha-decay events in the emulsion are standard calibration sources for the relation between the track length and kinetic energy in each emulsion sheet. We trained the CNN using 15,885 images of vertex-like objects including 906 alpha-decay events and tested it using a dataset of 46,948 images including 255 alpha-decay events. By tuning the hyperparameters of the CNN, the trained models achieved an Average Precision Score of 0.740 +/- 0.009 for the test dataset. For the model obtained, a discrimination threshold of the classification can be arbitrarily adjusted according to the balance between the precision and recall. The precision and recall of the classification using previous method without a CNN were 0.081 +/- 0.006 and 0.788 +/- 0.056, respectively, for the same dataset. By contrast, the developed classifier obtained a precision of 0.547 +/- 0.025 when a similar recall value of 0.788 was set. The developed CNN method reduced the human load for further visual inspection after the classification by approximately 1/7 compared to the estimated load of the former method without a CNN.

In comparison to the corresponding energy spacing in the mirror hypernucleus $^4_Λ$H, the present result clearly indicates the existence of charge symmetry breaking (CSB) in $ΛN$ interaction. It is also found that the CSB effect is large in the $0^+$ ground state but is by one order of magnitude smaller in the $1^+$ excited state, demonstrating that the $ΛN$ CSB interaction has spin dependence.

In this reaction $Λ(1405)$ hyperon resonance is expected to be produced as a doorway to form the $K^-pp$ through the $Λ^*p\rightarrow K^-pp$ process. However, most of the produced $Λ(1405)$'s would escape from deuteron without secondary reactions. Therefore, coincidence of high-momentum ($>$ 250~MeV/$c$) proton(s) in large emission angles ($39^\circ<θ_{lab.}<122^\circ$) was requested to enhance the signal-to-background ratio. A broad enhancement in the proton coincidence spectra are observed around the missing-mass of 2.27 GeV/$c^2$, which corresponds to the $K^-pp$ binding energy of 95 $^{+18}_{-17}$ (stat.) $^{+30}_{-21}$ (syst.) MeV and the width of 162 $^{+87}_{-45}$ (stat.) $^{+66}_{-78}$ (syst.) MeV.

Abstract:
We have measured an inclusive missing-mass spectrum of the $d(π^+, K^+)$ reaction at the pion incident momentum of 1.69 GeV/$c$ at the laboratory scattering angles between 2$^\circ$ and 16$^\circ$ with the missing-mass resolution of 2.7 $\pm$ 0.1 MeV/$c^2$ (FWHM) at the missing mass of 2.27 GeV/$c^{2}$. In this Letter, we first try to understand the spectrum as a simple quasi-free picture based on several known elementary cross sections, considering the neutron/proton Fermi motion in deuteron. While gross spectrum structures are well understood in this picture, we have observed two distinct deviations; one peculiar enhancement at 2.13 GeV/$c^2$ is due to the $ΣN$ cusp, and the other notable feature is a shift of a broad bump structure, mainly originating from hyperon resonance productions of $Λ(1405)$ and $Σ(1385)^{+/0}$, by about 22.4 $\pm$ 0.4 (stat.) $^{+2.7}_{-1.7}$ (syst.) MeV/$c^2$ toward the low-mass side, which is calculated in the kinematics of a proton at rest as the target.

Abstract:
The pentaquark $Θ^+$ has been searched for via the $π^-p \to K^-X$ reaction with beam momenta of 1.92 and 2.01 GeV/$c$ at J-PARC. The pentaquark $Θ^+$ has been searched for via the $π^-p \to K^-X$ reaction with beam momenta of 1.92 and 2.01 GeV/$c$ at J-PARC. A missing mass resolution of 2 MeV (FWHM) was achieved but no sharp peak structure was observed. The upper limits on the production cross section averaged over the scattering angle from 2$^{\circ}$ to 15$^{\circ}$ in the laboratory frame were found to be less than 0.28 $μ$b/sr at the 90\% confidence level for both the 1.92- and 2.01-GeV/$c$ data. The systematic uncertainty of the upper limits was controlled within 10\%. Constraints on the $Θ^+$ decay width were also evaluated with a theoretical calculation using effective Lagrangian. The present result implies that the width should be less than 0.36 and 1.9 MeV for the spin-parity of $1/2^+$ and $1/2^-$, respectively.
