Abstract:
The decay $Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-$ is observed using a proton-proton collision data sample collected at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.5 fb$^{-1}$. This process is mediated by the $s\to u\bar{u}d$ quark-level transition, where the $b$ quark in the $Ξ_b^-$ baryon is a spectator in the decay. Averaging the results obtained usi…

Averaging the results obtained using the two $Λ_b^0$ decay modes, $Λ_b^0\toΛ_c^+π^-$ and $Λ_b^0\toΛ_c^+π^-π^+π^-$, the relative production ratio is measured to be $(f_{Ξ_b^-}/f_{Λ_b^0}){\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-)=(7.3\pm0.8\pm0.6)\times10^{-4}$. Here the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, and $f_{Ξ_b^-}(f_{Λ_b^0})$ is the fragmentation fraction for a $b$ quark into a $Ξ_b^-$ ($Λ_b^0$) baryon. Using an independent measurement of $f_{Ξ_b^-}/f_{Λ_b^0}$, the branching fraction ${\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-)=(0.89\pm0.10\pm0.07\pm0.29)\%$ is obtained, where the last uncertainty is due to the assumed SU(3) flavor symmetry in the determination of $f_{Ξ_b^-}/f_{Λ_b^0}$.

Human brain development is rapid during infancy and early childhood. Many disease processes impair this development. Therefore, brain developmental age estimation (BDAE) is essential for all diseases affecting cognitive development. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of infants shows brain growth and morphologic patterns during childhood. Therefore, we can estimate the developmental age from brain images. However, MRI analysis is time-consuming because each scan contains millions of data points (voxels). We investigated the three-dimensional convolutional neural network (3D CNN), a deep learning algorithm, to rapidly classify neurodevelopmental age with high accuracy based on MRIs. MRIs from normal newborns were obtained from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Data Archive. Age categories of pediatric MRIs were 3 wks + 1 wk, 1 yr + 2 wks, and 3 yrs + 4 wks. We trained a BDAE method using T1, T2, and proton density (PD) images from MRI scans of 112 individuals using 3D CNN. Compared with the known age, our method has a sensitivity of 99% and specificity of 98.3%. Moreover, our 3D CNN model has better performance in neurodevelopmental age estimation than does 2D CNN.

With the progress of cancer, the macromolecules such as DNA, RNA, lipids, etc. inside cells undergo spatial structural rearrangements and alterations. Mesoscopic physics based optical partial wave spectroscopy (PWS) was recently introduced to quantify changes in the nanoscale structural disorder in biological cells. The measurement is done in a parameter termed as disorder strength ( Ld) which represents the degree of nanoscale structural disorder inside the cells. It was shown that cancerous cells have higher disorder strength than the normal cells. In this work, using the PWS technique, we analyzed the hierarchy of different types of prostate cancer cells by quantifying their average disorder strengths. The results showed that increase in the tumorigenicity level of prostate cancer is correlated with the increase in the disorder strength Ld. Furthermore, using the Ld parameter we also analyzed docetaxel chemo-resistance attribute of these prostate cancer cells, in comparison to docetaxel chemo-sensitive cancer cells. Our results show that chemo drug resistive cancer cells have mutations to more aggressive, or increased in Ld values relative to the chemo sensitive cancer cells. Potential applications of the Ld parameter for determining the effectiveness of the chemotherapy drug on cancer cells are discussed.
