We focus on Heisenberg antiferromagnets and long-range transverse-field Ising models as particular examples. By employing a range of self-consistent time-dependent mean-field approximations in conjunction with Holstein-Primakoff, Dyson-Maleev, Schwinger boson and modified spin-wave theory representations we obtain results in thermal equilibrium as well as during non-equilibrium evolution after quantum quenches. To extract probability distributions we derive a simple formula for the characteristic function of generic quadratic observables in any Gaussian theory of bosons.

We study the statistics of matrix elements of local operators in the basis of energy eigenstates in a paradigmatic integrable many-particle quantum theory, the Lieb-Liniger model of bosons with repulsive delta-function interaction. Using methods of quantum integrability we determine the scaling of matrix elements with system size. As a consequence of the extensive number of conservation laws the structure of matrix elements is fundamentally different from, and much more intricate than, the predictions of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis for generic models. We uncover an interesting connection between this structure for local operators in interacting integrable models, and the one for local operators that are not local with respect to the elementary excitations in free theories. We find that typical off-diagonal matrix elements $\langle\boldsymbolμ|O|\boldsymbolλ\rangle$ in the same macro-state scale as $\exp(-c^{ O}L\ln(L)-LM^{O}_{\boldsymbolμ,\boldsymbolλ})$ where the probability distribution function for $M^{O}_{\boldsymbolμ,\boldsymbolλ}$ are well described by Fréchet distributions and $c^{O}$ depends only on macro-state information. In contrast, typical off-diagonal matrix elements between two different macro-states scale as $\exp(-d^{ O}L^2)$, where $d^{O}$ depends only on macro-state information. Diagonal matrix elements depend only on macro-state information up to finite-size corrections.

The presence of long-lived oscillations in the expectation values of local observables after quantum quenches has recently attracted considerable attention in relation to weak ergodicity breaking. Here we focus on an alternative mechanism that gives rise to such oscillations in a class of systems that support kinematically protected gapped excitations at zero temperature. An open question in this context is whether such oscillations will ultimately decay. We resolve this issue by considering spin models that can be mapped to systems of weakly interacting fermions, which in turn are amenable to an analysis by standard methods based on the BBGKY hierarchy. We find that there is a parametrically large time scale after which the oscillations start to decay.

Markov-chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), the field of stochastic algorithms built on the concept of sampling, has countless applications in science and technology. The overwhelming majority of MCMC algorithms are time-reversible and satisfy the detailed-balance condition, just like physical systems in thermal equilibrium. The underlying Markov chains typically display diffusive dynamics, which leads to a slow exploration of sample space. Significant speed-ups can be achieved by non-reversible MCMC algorithms exhibiting non-equilibrium dynamics, whose steady states exactly reproduce the target equilibrium states of reversible Markov chains. Such algorithms have had successes in applications but are generally difficult to analyze, resulting in a scarcity of exact results. Here, we introduce the "lifted" TASEP (totally asymmetric simple exclusion process) as a paradigm for lifted non-reversible Markov chains. Our model can be viewed as a second-generation lifting of the reversible Metropolis algorithm on a one-dimensional lattice and is exactly solvable by an unusual kind of coordinate Bethe ansatz. We establish the integrability of the model and present strong evidence that the lifting leads to faster relaxation than in the KPZ universality class.

In a recent numerical study by Haldar et al. (Phys. Rev. X 11, 031062) it was shown that signatures of proximate quantum critical points can be observed at early and intermediate times after certain quantum quenches. Said work focused mainly on the case of the axial next-nearest neighbour Ising (ANNNI) model. Here we construct a simple time-dependent mean-field theory that allows us to obtain a quantitatively accurate description of these quenches at short times, which for reasons we explain remains a fair approximation at late times (with some caveats). Our approach provides a simple framework for understanding the reported numerical results as well as fundamental limitations on detecting quantum critical points through quench dynamics. We moreover explain the origin of the peculiar oscillatory behaviour seen in various observables as arising from the formation of a long-lived bound state.

We demonstrate that nonlinear response functions in many-body systems carry a sharp signature of interactions between gapped low-energy quasiparticles. Such interactions are challenging to deduce from linear response measurements. The signature takes the form of a divergent-in-time contribution to the response -- linear in time in the case when quasiparticles propagate ballistically -- that is absent for free bosonic excitations. We give an intuitive semiclassical picture of this singular behaviour, validated against exact results from a form-factor expansion of the Ising chain and tDMRG simulations in a non-integrable model -- the spin-1 AKLT chain. We comment on extensions of these results to more general settings, finite temperature, and higher dimensions.

We consider fermions defined on a continuous one-dimensional interval and subject to weak repulsive two-body interactions. We show that it is possible to perturbatively construct an extensive number of mutually compatible conserved charges for any interaction potential. However, the contributions to the densities of these charges at second order and higher are generally non-local and become spatially localized only if the potential fulfils certain compatibility conditions. We prove that the only solutions to the first of these conditions are the Cheon-Shigehara potential (fermionic dual to the Lieb-Liniger model) and the Calogero-Sutherland potentials. We use our construction to show how Generalized Hydrodynamics (GHD) emerges from the Bogoliubov--Born--Green--Kirkwood--Yvon hierarchy, and argue that GHD in the weak interaction regime is robust under non-integrable perturbations.

In one dimensional quantum gases there is a well known "duality" between hard core bosons and non-interacting fermions. However, at the field theory level, no exact duality connecting strongly interacting bosons to weakly interacting fermions is known. Here we propose a solution to this long standing problem. Our derivation relies on regularizing the only point-like interaction between fermions in 1D that induces a discontinuity in the wave function proportional to its derivative. In contrast to all known regularisations our potential is weak for small interaction strengths. Crucially, this allows one to apply standard methods of diagrammatic perturbation theory to strongly interacting bosons. As a first application we compute the finite temperature spectral function of the Cheon-Shigehara model, the fermionic model dual to the celebrated Lieb-Liniger model.

We consider the dynamics of fluctuations in the quantum asymmetric simple exclusion process (Q-ASEP) with periodic boundary conditions. The Q-ASEP describes a chain of spinless fermions with random hop**s that are induced by a Markovian environment. We show that fluctuations of the fermionic degrees of freedom obey evolution equations of Lindblad type, and derive the corresponding Lindbladians. We identify the underlying algebraic structure by map** them to non-Hermitian spin chains and demonstrate that the operator space fragments into exponentially many (in system size) sectors that are invariant under time evolution. At the level of quadratic fluctuations we consider the Lindbladian on the sectors that determine the late time dynamics for the particular case of the quantum symmetric simple exclusion process (Q-SSEP). We show that the corresponding blocks in some cases correspond to known Yang-Baxter integrable models and investigate the level-spacing statistics in others. We carry out a detailed analysis of the steady states and slow modes that govern the late time behaviour and show that the dynamics of fluctuations of observables is described in terms of closed sets of coupled linear differential-difference equations. The behaviour of the solutions to these equations is essentially diffusive but with relevant deviations, that at sufficiently late times and large distances can be described in terms of a continuum scaling limit which we construct. We numerically check the validity of this scaling limit over a significant range of time and space scales. These results are then applied to the study of operator spreading at large scales, focusing on out-of-time ordered correlators and operator entanglement.

We consider the time evolution of local observables after an interaction quench in the repulsive Lieb-Liniger model. The system is initialized in the ground state for vanishing interaction and then time-evolved with the Lieb-Liniger Hamiltonian for large, finite interacting strength $c$. We employ the Quench Action approach to express the full time evolution of local observables in terms of sums over energy eigenstates and then derive the leading terms of a $1/c$ expansion for several one and two-point functions as a function of time $t > 0$ after the quantum quench. We observe delicate cancellations of contributions to the spectral sums that depend on the details of the choice of representative state in the Quench Action approach and our final results are independent of this choice. Our results provide a highly non-trivial confirmation of the typicality assumptions underlying the Quench Action approach.

We introduce a framework for calculating dynamical correlations in the Lieb-Liniger model in arbitrary energy eigenstates and for all space and time, that combines a Lehmann representation with a $1/c$ expansion. The $n^{\rm th}$ term of the expansion is of order $1/c^n$ and takes into account all $\lfloor \tfrac{n}{2}\rfloor+1$ particle-hole excitations over the averaging eigenstate. Importantly, in contrast to a 'bare' $1/c$ expansion it is uniform in space and time. The framework is based on a method for taking the thermodynamic limit of sums of form factors that exhibit non integrable singularities. We expect our framework to be applicable to any local operator.
We determine the first three terms of this expansion and obtain an explicit expression for the density-density dynamical correlations and the dynamical structure factor at order $1/c^2$. We apply these to finite-temperature equilibrium states and non-equilibrium steady states after quantum quenches. We recover predictions of (nonlinear) Luttinger liquid theory and generalized hydrodynamics in the appropriate limits, and are able to compute sub-leading corrections to these.

Both of these can be expressed in terms of form factor sums in the basis of physical excitations of the model. We develop a general framework for carrying out these sums based on a decomposition of form factors into partial fractions, which leads to a factorization of the multiple sums and permits them to be evaluated asymptotically. This naturally leads to systematic low density expansions. At late times these expansions can be summed to all orders by means of a determinant representation. Our method has a natural generalization to semi-local operators in interacting integrable models.

It is well known that the low-energy sector of such systems can be described in terms of two compact phase fields $\hatφ_{a,s}(x)$. Building on existing results in the literature we discuss how a single projective measurement of the particle density after trap release is in a certain limit related to the eigenvalues of the vertex operator $e^{i\hatφ_a(x)}$. We emphasize the theoretical assumptions underlying the analysis of "single-shot" interference patterns and show that such measurements give direct access to multi-point correlation functions of $e^{i\hatφ_a(x)}$ in a substantial parameter regime. For experimentally relevant situations, we derive an expression for the measured particle density after trap release in terms of convolutions of the eigenvalues of vertex operators involving both sectors of the two-component Luttinger liquid that describes the low-energy regime of the split condensate. This opens the door to accessing properties of the symmetric sector via an appropriate analysis of existing experimental data.

We consider the full probability distribution for the transverse magnetization of a finite subsystem in the transverse field Ising chain. We derive a determinant representation of the corresponding characteristic function for general Gaussian states. We consider applications to the full counting statistics in the ground state, finite temperature equilibrium states, non-equilibrium steady states and time evolution after global quantum quenches. We derive an analytical expression for the time and subsystem size dependence of the characteristic function at sufficiently late times after a quantum quench. We study a Yang-Baxter integrable quantum spin-1/2 chain with random interactions. The Hamiltonian is local and involves two and three-spin interactions with random parameters. We show that the energy eigenstates of the model are never localized and in fact exhibit perfect energy and spin transport at both zero and infinite temperatures. By considering the vicinity of a free fermion point in the model we demonstrate that this behavior persists under deformations that break integrability but preserve the free fermion nature of the Hamiltonian. In this case the ballistic behavior can be understood as arising from the correlated nature of the disorder in the model. We conjecture that the model belongs to a broad class of models avoiding localization in 1D.

We study the dynamical response of the half-filled one-dimensional(1d) Hubbard model for a range of interaction strengths $U$ and temperatures $T$ by a combination of numerical and analytical techniques. Using time-dependent density matrix renormalization group (tDMRG) computations we find that the single-particle spectral function undergoes a crossover to a spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid regime at temperatures $T \sim J=4t^2/U$ for sufficiently large $U > 4t$. At smaller values of $U$ and elevated temperatures the spectral function is found to exhibit two thermally broadened bands of excitations, reminiscent of what is found in the Hubbard-I approximation. The dynamical density-density response function is shown to exhibit a finite temperature resonance at low frequencies inside the Mott gap, with a physical origin similar to the Villain mode in gapped quantum spin chains. We complement our numerical computations by develo** an analytic strong-coupling approach to the low-temperature dynamics in the spin-incoherent regime.

In particular we investigate the nature of the quantum phase transition, taking place with growing ratio $V/U$ between the symmetry-protected-topological and charge-density-wave insulating states. The (weak-coupling) critical line of continuous Ising transitions with central charge $c=1/2$ terminates at a tricritical point belonging to the universality class of the dilute Ising model with $c=7/10$. We demonstrate that our DMRG data perfectly match with (tricritical) Ising exponents, e.g., for the order parameter $β=1/8$ (1/24) and correlation length $ν=1$ (5/9). Beyond the tricritical Ising point, in the strong-coupling regime, the quantum phase transition becomes first order.

Confinement is a process by which particles with fractional quantum numbers bind together to form quasiparticles with integer quantum numbers. The constituent particles are confined by an attractive interaction whose strength increases with increasing particle separation and as a consequence, individual particles are not found in isolation. This phenomenon is well known in particle physics where quarks are confined in baryons and mesons. An analogous phenomenon occurs in certain magnetic insulators; weakly coupled chains of spins S=1/2. The collective excitations in these systems is spinons (S=1/2). At low temperatures weak coupling between chains can induce an attractive interaction between pairs of spinons that increases with their separation and thus leads to confinement. In this paper, we employ inelastic neutron scattering to investigate the spinon confinement in the quasi-1D S=1/2 XXZ antiferromagnet SrCo2V2O8. Spinon excitations are observed above TN in quantitative agreement with established theory. Below TN the pairs of spinons are confined and two sequences of meson-like bound states with longitudinal and transverse polarizations are observed. Several theoretical approaches are used to explain the data. A new theoretical technique based on Tangent-space Matrix Product States gives a very complete description of the data and provides good agreement not only with the energies of the bound modes but also with their intensities. We also successfully explained the effect of temperature on the excitations including the experimentally observed thermally induced resonance between longitudinal modes below TN ,and the transitions between thermally excited spinon states above TN. In summary, our work establishes SrCo2V2O8 as a beautiful paradigm for spinon confinement in a quasi-1D quantum magnet and provides a comprehensive picture of this process.

The decay rate is found to be small, which indicates that spinons remain well-defined excitations even though integrability is broken.

We test the efficiency of the two different ensembles by comparing their predictions for the stationary state values of the single-particle Green's function $G(x) = \langle ψ^{\dagger}(x) ψ(0) \rangle$ of the complex fermion field $ψ(x)$. We employ equation of motion techniques to study the non-equilibrium dynamics in a lattice model of weakly interacting spinless fermions. Our model provides a simple setting for analyzing the effects of weak integrability breaking perturbations on the time evolution after a quantum quench. We establish the accuracy of the method by comparing results at short and intermediate times to time-dependent density matrix renormalization group computations. For sufficiently weak integrability-breaking interactions we always observe prethermalization plateaux, where local observables relax to non-thermal values at intermediate time scales. At later times a crossover towards thermal behaviour sets in. We determine the associated time scale, which depends on the initial state, the band structure of the non-interacting theory, and the strength of the integrability breaking perturbation. Our method allows us to analyze in some detail the spreading of correlations and in particular the structure of the associated light cones in our model. We find that the interior and exterior of the light cone are separated by an intermediate region, the temporal width of which appears to scale with a universal power-law $t^{1/3}$.

We show that the critical line of the continuous Ising transition terminates at a tricritical point, belonging to the universality class of the tricritical Ising model with central charge $c=7/10$. Above this point, the quantum phase transition becomes first order. Employing a numerical matrix-product-state based (infinite) density-matrix renormalization group method we determine the ground-state phase diagram, the spin and two-particle charge excitations gaps, and the entanglement properties of the model with high precision. Performing a bosonization analysis we can derive a field description of the transition region in terms of a triple sine-Gordon model. This allows us to derive field theory predictions for the power-law (exponential) decay of the density-density (spin-spin) and bond-order-wave correlation functions, which are found to be in excellent agreement with our numerical results.

We find that the transverse correlation function $\langle S^x_jS^x_{j+\ell}\rangle$ agrees with the Luttinger model prediction to a surprising level of accuracy. The agreement for the longitudinal two-point function $\langle S^z_jS^z_{j+\ell}\rangle$ is found to be much poorer. We speculate that this difference between transverse and longitudinal correlations has its origin in the locality properties of the respective spin operator with respect to the underlying fermionic modes.

A crucial issue is then to identify a complete set of these charges, enabling the GGE to provide exact steady state predictions. Here we solve this long-standing problem for the case of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain by explicitly constructing a GGE which uniquely fixes the macrostate describing the stationary behaviour after a general quantum quench. A crucial ingredient in our method, which readily generalizes to other integrable models, are recently discovered quasi-local charges. We benchmark our method against time dependent density matrix renormalization group computations and find it to be very accurate as long as interactions are weak. For small integrability breaking, we observe robust prethermalization plateaux for local observables on all accessible time scales. Increasing the strength of the integrability breaking term induces a "drift" away from the prethermalization plateaux towards thermal behaviour. We identify a time scale characterizing this cross-over.

We revisit the problem of dynamical response in spin-charge separated one dimensional quantum fluids. In the framework of Luttinger liquid theory, the dynamical response is formulated in terms of noninteracting bosonic collective excitations carrying either charge or spin. We argue that, as a result of spectral nonlinearity, long-lived excitations are best understood in terms of generally strongly interacting fermionic holons and spinons. This has far reaching ramifications for the construction of mobile impurity models used to determine threshold singularities in response functions. We formulate and solve the appropriate mobile impurity model describing the spinon threshold in the single-particle Green's function. Our formulation further raises the question whether it is possible to realize a model of noninteracting fermionic holons and spinons in microscopic lattice models of interacting spinful fermions. We investigate this issue in some detail by means of density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) computations.

In a presence of local conservation laws, these stationary states are believed to be described by appropriate generalized Gibbs ensembles. Here we demonstrate that in order to obtain a correct description of the stationary state, it is necessary to take into account conservation laws that are not (ultra-)local in the usual sense of QFT, but fulfil a significantly weaker form of locality. We discuss implications of our results for integrable QFTs in one spatial dimension.

Abstract:
We consider single-particle properties in the one-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model at commensurate fillings in the metallic phase. We determine the real-time evolution of the retarded Green's function by matrix-product state methods. We find that at sufficiently late times the numerical results are in good agreement with predictions of nonlinear Luttinger liquid theory. We argue that combining…

We argue that combining the two methods provides a way of determining the single-particle spectral function with very high frequency resolution.

We present experimental and theoretical evidence that an interesting quantum many-body effect -- quasi-particle breakdown -- occurs in the quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 Ising-like ferromagnet CoNb$_2$O$_6$ in its paramagnetic phase at high transverse field as a result of explicit breaking of spin inversion symmetry. We propose a quantum spin Hamiltonian capturing the essential one-dimensional physics of CoNb$_2$O$_6$ and determine the exchange parameters of this model by fitting the calculated single particle dispersion to the one observed experimentally in applied transverse magnetic fields. We present high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the single particle dispersion which observe "anomalous broadening" effects over a narrow energy range at intermediate energies. We propose that this effect originates from the decay of the one particle mode into two-particle states. This decay arises from (i) a finite overlap between the one-particle dispersion and the two-particle continuum in a narrow energy-momentum range and (ii) a small misalignment of the applied field away from the direction perpendicular to the Ising axis in the experiments, which allows for non-zero matrix elements for decay by breaking the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin inversion symmetry of the Hamiltonian.
