We consider a linear precoder design for an underlay cognitive radio multiple-input multiple-output broadcast channel, where the secondary system consisting of a secondary base-station (BS) and a group of secondary users (SUs) is allowed to share the same spectrum with the primary system. All the transceivers are equipped with multiple antennas, each of which has its own maximum power constraint. Assuming zero-forcing method to eliminate the multiuser interference, we study the sum rate maximization problem for the secondary system subject to both per-antenna power constraints at the secondary BS and the interference power constraints at the primary users. The problem of interest differs from the ones studied previously that often assumed a sum power constraint and/or single antenna employed at either both the primary and secondary receivers or the primary receivers. To develop an efficient numerical algorithm, we first invoke the rank relaxation method to transform the considered problem into a convex-concave problem based on a downlink-uplink result. We then propose a barrier interior-point method to solve the resulting saddle point problem. In particular, in each iteration of the proposed method we find the Newton step by solving a system of discrete-time Sylvester equations, which help reduce the complexity significantly, compared to the conventional method. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate fast convergence and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

In this paper, we consider wireless powered communication networks which could operate perpetually, as the base station (BS) broadcasts energy to the multiple energy harvesting (EH) information transmitters. These employ "harvest then transmit" mechanism, as they spend all of their energy harvested during the previous BS energy broadcast to transmit the information towards the BS. Assuming time division multiple access (TDMA), we propose a novel transmission scheme for jointly optimal allocation of the BS broadcasting power and time sharing among the wireless nodes, which maximizes the overall network throughput, under the constraint of average transmit power and maximum transmit power at the BS. The proposed scheme significantly outperforms "state of the art" schemes that employ only the optimal time allocation. If a single EH transmitter is considered, we generalize the optimal solutions for the case of fixed circuit power consumption, which refers to a much more practical scenario.

We consider a three-node decode-and-forward (DF) half-duplex relaying system, where the source first harvests RF energy from the relay, and then uses this energy to transmit information to the destination via the relay. We assume that the information transfer and wireless power transfer phases alternate over time in the same frequency band, and their {\it time fraction} (TF) may change or be fixed from one transmission epoch (fading state) to the next. For this system, we maximize the achievable average data rate. Thereby, we propose two schemes: (1) jointly optimal power and TF allocation, and (2) optimal power allocation with fixed TF. Due to the small amounts of harvested power at the source, the two schemes achieve similar information rates, but yield significant performance gains compared to a benchmark system with fixed power and fixed TF allocation.

In this paper, we formulate the interference alignment (IA) problem for a multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system in the presence of an eavesdropper as a rank constrained rank minimization (RCRM) problem. The aim of the proposed rank minimization IA schemes is to find the precoding and receiver subspace matrices to align interference and wiretapped signals into the lowest dimension subspaces while kee** the desired signal subspace spanning full available spatial dimensions. To deal with the nonconvexity of the rank function, we present two convex relaxations of the RCRM problem, namely nuclear norm (NN) and reweighted nuclear norm (RNN), and transform the rank constraints to equivalent and tractable ones. We then derive a coordinate decent approach to obtain the solutions for IA schemes. The simulation results show that our proposed IA designs outperform the conventional IA design in terms of average secrecy sum rate. On the other hand, our proposed designs perform the same or better than other secure IA schemes which account for low interference and wiretapped signal power rather than for low dimensions of interference and wiretapped signal matrices in the systems which achieve the perfect IA.

In this paper, we investigate the downlink multiple-input-multipleoutput (MIMO) broadcast channels in which a base transceiver station (BTS) broadcasts multiple data streams to K MIMO mobile stations (MSs) simultaneously. In order to maximize the weighted sum-rate (WSR) of the system subject to the transmitted power constraint, the design problem is to find the pre-coding matrices at BTS and the decoding matrices at MSs. However, such a design problem is typically a nonlinear and nonconvex optimization and, thus, it is quite hard to obtain the analytical solutions. To tackle with the mathematical difficulties, we propose an efficient stochastic optimization algorithm to optimize the transceiver matrices. Specifically, we utilize the linear minimum mean square error (MMSE) Wiener filters at MSs. Then, we introduce the constrained particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to jointly optimize the precoding and decoding matrices. Numerical experiments are exhibited to validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in terms of convergence, computational complexity and total WSR.

In this paper, we propose two secure multiuser multiple-input multiple-output transmission approaches based on interference alignment (IA) in the presence of an eavesdropper. To deal with the information leakage to the eavesdropper as well as the interference signals from undesired transmitters (Txs) at desired receivers (Rxs), our approaches aim to design the transmit precoding and receive subspace matrices to minimize both the total inter-main-link interference and the wiretapped signals (WSs). The first proposed IA scheme focuses on aligning the WSs into proper subspaces while the second one imposes a new structure on the precoding matrices to force the WSs to zero. When the channel state information is perfectly known at all Txs, in each proposed IA scheme, the precoding matrices at Txs and the receive subspaces at Rxs or the eavesdropper are alternatively selected to minimize the cost function of an convex optimization problem for every iteration. We provide the feasible conditions and the proofs of convergence for both IA approaches. The simulation results indicate that our two IA approaches outperform the conventional IA algorithm in terms of average secrecy sum rate.

Arterial blood pressure is a key vital sign for the health of the human body. As such, accurate and reproducible measurement techniques are necessary for successful diagnosis. Blood pressure measurement is an example of molecular communication in regulated biological systems. In general, communication in regulated biological systems is difficult because the act of encoding information about the state of the system can corrupt the message itself. In this paper, we propose three strategies to cope with this problem to facilitate reliable molecular communication links: communicate from the outskirts; build it in; and leave a small footprint. Our strategies---inspired by communication in natural biological systems---provide a classification to guide the design of molecular communication mechanisms in synthetic biological systems. We illustrate our classification using examples of the first two strategies in natural systems. We then consider a molecular link within a model based on the Michaelis-Menten kinetics. In particular, we compute the capacity of the link, which reveals the potential of communicating using our leave a small footprint strategy. This provides a way of identifying whether the molecular link can be improved without affecting the function, and a guide to the design of synthetic biological systems.

Molecular communication is set to play an important role in the design of complex biological and chemical systems. An important class of molecular communication systems is based on the timing channel, where information is encoded in the delay of the transmitted molecule---a synchronous approach. At present, a widely used modeling assumption is the perfect synchronization between the transmitter and the receiver. Unfortunately, this assumption is unlikely to hold in most practical molecular systems. To remedy this, we introduce a clock into the model---leading to the molecular timing channel with synchronization error. To quantify the behavior of this new system, we derive upper and lower bounds on the variance-constrained capacity, which we view as the step between the mean-delay and the peak-delay constrained capacity. By numerically evaluating our bounds, we obtain a key practical insight: the drift velocity of the clock links does not need to be significantly larger than the drift velocity of the information link, in order to achieve the variance-constrained capacity with perfect synchronization.

We consider a multi-pair relay channel where multiple sources simultaneously communicate with destinations using a relay. Each source or destination has only a single antenna, while the relay is equipped with a very large antenna array. We investigate the power efficiency of this system when maximum ratio combining/maximal ratio transmission (MRC/MRT) or zero-forcing (ZF) processing is used at the relay. Using a very large array, the transmit power of each source or relay (or both) can be made inversely proportional to the number of relay antennas while maintaining a given quality-of-service. At the same time, the achievable sum rate can be increased by a factor of the number of source-destination pairs. We show that when the number of antennas grows to infinity, the asymptotic achievable rates of MRC/MRT and ZF are the same if we scale the power at the sources. Depending on the large scale fading effect, MRC/MRT can outperform ZF or vice versa if we scale the power at the relay.

We analyze the outage performance of a two-way fixed gain amplify-and-forward (AF) relay system with beamforming, arbitrary antenna correlation, and co-channel interference (CCI). Assuming CCI at the relay, we derive the exact individual user outage probability in closed-form. Additionally, while neglecting CCI, we also investigate the system outage probability of the considered network, which is declared if any of the two users is in transmission outage. Our results indicate that in this system, the position of the relay plays an important role in determining the user as well as the system outage probability via such parameters as signal-to-noise imbalance, antenna configuration, spatial correlation, and CCI power. To render further insights into the effect of antenna correlation and CCI on the diversity and array gains, an asymptotic expression which tightly converges to exact results is also derived.

We consider the uplink of a multicell multiuser multiple-input multiple-output system where the channel experiences both small and large-scale fading. The data detection is done by using the linear zero-forcing technique, assuming the base station (BS) has perfect channel state information. We derive new, exact closed-form expressions for the uplink rate, symbol error rate, and outage probability per user, as well as a lower bound on the achievable rate. This bound is very tight and becomes exact in the large-number-of-antennas limit. We further study the asymptotic system performance in the regimes of high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), large number of antennas, and large number of users per cell. We show that at high SNRs, the system is interference-limited and hence, we cannot improve the system performance by increasing the transmit power of each user. Instead, by increasing the number of BS antennas, the effects of interference and noise can be reduced, thereby improving the system performance. We demonstrate that, with very large antenna arrays at the BS, the transmit power of each user can be made inversely proportional to the number of BS antennas while maintaining a desired quality-of-service. Numerical results are presented to verify our analysis.
