The observed pattern of fermion masses and mixing is an outstanding puzzle in particle physics, generally known as the flavor problem. Over the years, guided by precision neutrino oscillation data, discrete flavor symmetries have often been used to explain the neutrino mixing parameters, which look very different from the quark sector. In this review, we discuss the application of non-Abelian finite groups to the theory of neutrino masses and mixing in the light of current and future neutrino oscillation data. We start with an overview of the neutrino mixing parameters, comparing different global fit results and limits on normal and inverted neutrino mass ordering schemes. Then, we discuss a general framework for implementing discrete family symmetries to explain neutrino masses and mixing. We discuss CP violation effects, giving an update of CP predictions for trimaximal models with nonzero reactor mixing angle and models with partial $μ-τ$ reflection symmetry, and constraining models with neutrino mass sum rules. The connection between texture zeroes and discrete symmetries is also discussed. We summarize viable higher-order groups, which can explain the observed pattern of lepton mixing where the non-zero $θ_{13}$ plays an important role. We also review the prospects of embedding finite discrete symmetries in the Grand Unified Theories and with extended Higgs fields. Models based on modular symmetry are also briefly discussed. A major part of the review is dedicated to the phenomenology of flavor symmetries and possible signatures in the current and future experiments at the intensity, energy, and cosmic frontiers. In this context, we discuss flavor symmetry implications for neutrinoless double beta decay, collider signals, leptogenesis, dark matter, as well as gravitational waves.

We discuss the Mellin-Barnes representation of complex multidimensional integrals. Experiments frontiered by the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider at CERN and future collider projects demand the development of computational methods to achieve the theoretical precision required by experimental setups. In this regard, performing higher-order calculations in perturbative quantum field theory is of paramount importance. The Mellin-Barnes integrals technique has been successfully applied to the analytic and numerical analysis of integrals connected with virtual and real higher-order perturbative corrections to particle scattering. Easy-to-follow examples with the supplemental online material introduce the reader to the construction and the analytic, approximate, and numeric solution of Mellin-Barnes integrals in Euclidean and Minkowskian kinematic regimes. It also includes an overview of the state-of-the-art software packages for manipulating and evaluating Mellin-Barnes integrals. These lecture notes are for advanced students and young researchers to master the theoretical background needed to perform perturbative quantum field theory calculations.

Modern particle physics is increasingly becoming a precision science that relies on advanced theoretical predictions for the analysis and interpretation of experimental results. The planned physics program at the LHC and future colliders will require three-loop electroweak and mixed electroweak-QCD corrections to single-particle production and decay processes and two-loop electroweak corrections to pair production processes, all of which are beyond the reach of existing analytical and numerical techniques in their current form. This article presents a new semi-numerical approach based on differential equations with boundary terms specified at Euclidean kinematic points. These Euclidean boundary terms can be computed numerically with high accuracy using sector decomposition or other numerical methods. They are then mapped to the physical kinematic configuration with a series solution of the differential equation system. The method is able to deliver 8 or more digits precision, and it has a built-in mechanism for checking the accuracy of the obtained results. Its efficacy is illustrated with examples for three-loop self-energy and vertex integrals and two-loop box integrals.

The input parameters are the masses $M_Z$, $M_H$ and $m_t$, and the couplings $α_s$, $α$. The scheme dependence due to the choice of $M_W$ or its alternative $G_μ$ as a last input parameter is also discussed. Recent substantial technical progress in the calculation of Minkowskian massive higher-order Feynman integrals allows the calculation of the complete electroweak two-loop radiative corrections to all the observables mentioned. QCD contributions are included appropriately. Results are provided in terms of simple and convenient parameterization formulae whose coefficients have been determined from the full numerical multi-loop calculation. The size of the missing electroweak three-loop or QCD higher-order corrections is estimated. We briefly comment on the prospects for their calculation. Finally, direct predictions for the $Z{\bar f}f$ vector and axial-vector form-factors are given, including a discussion of separate order-by-order contributions.

The future 100-km circular collider FCC at CERN is planned to operate in one of its modes as an electron-positron FCC-ee machine. We give an overview comparing the theoretical status to the experimental demands of one of four foreseen FCC-ee operating stages, Z-boson resonance energy physics, called the FCC-ee Tera-Z stage for short. The FCC-ee Tera-Z will deliver the highest integrated luminosities as well as very small systematic errors for a study of the Standard Model (SM) with unprecedented precision. In fact, the FCC-ee Tera-Z will allow the study of at least one more perturbative order in quantum field theory compared to the LEP/SLC precision. The real problem is that the present precision of theoretical calculations of the various SM observables does not match that of the anticipated experimental measurements. The bottle-necks to overcoming this situation are identified. In particular, the issues of precise QED unfolding and the correct calculation of SM pseudo-observables are critically reviewed. In an Executive Summary, we specify which basic theoretical calculations are needed to meet the strong experimental expectations at the FCC-ee Tera-Z. Several methods, techniques and tools needed for higher-order multi-loop calculations are presented. By inspection of the Z-boson partial and total decay width analyses, it is argued that at the beginning of operation of the FCC-ee Tera-Z, the theory predictions may be tuned to be precise enough not to limit the physics interpretation of the measurements. This statement is based on anticipated progress in analytical and numerical calculations of multi-loop and multi-scale Feynman integrals and on the completion of two-loop electroweak radiative corrections to the SM pseudo-observables this year. However, the above statement is conditional as the theoretical issues demand a very dedicated and focused investment by the community.

This article presents results for the last unknown two-loop contributions to the $Z$-boson partial widths and $Z$-peak cross-section. These are the so-called bosonic electroweak two-loop corrections, where "bosonic" refers to diagrams without closed fermion loops. Together with the corresponding results for the $Z$-pole asymmetries $A_l, A_b$, which have been presented earlier, this completes the theoretical description of $Z$-boson precision observables at full two-loop precision within the Standard Model. The calculation has been achieved through a combination of different methods: (a) numerical integration of Mellin-Barnes representations with contour rotations and contour shifts to improve convergence; (b) sector decomposition with numerical integration over Feynman parameters; (c) dispersion relations for sub-loop insertions. Numerical results are presented in the form of simple parameterization formulae for the total width, $Γ_{\rm Z}$, partial decay widths $Γ_{e,μ},Γ_τ,Γ_ν,Γ_{u},Γ_{c},Γ_{d,s},Γ_{b}$, branching ratios $R_l,R_c,R_b$ and the hadronic peak cross-section, $σ_{\rm had}^0$. Theoretical intrinsic uncertainties from missing higher orders are also discussed.

During the last several years remarkable progress has been made in numerical calculations of dimensionally regulated multi-loop Feynman diagrams using Mellin-Barnes (MB) representations. The bottlenecks were non-planar diagrams and Minkowskian kinematics. The method has been proved to work in highly non-trivial physical application (two-loop electroweak bosonic corrections to the $Z \to b \bar{b}$ decay), and cross-checked with the sector decomposition (SD) approach. In fact, both approaches have their pros and cons. In calculation of multidimensional integrals, depending on masses and scales involved, they are complementary. A powerful top-bottom approach to the numerical integration of multidimensional MB integrals is automatized in the MB-suite AMBRE/MB/ MBtools/MBnumerics/CUBA. Key elements are a dedicated use of the Cheng-Wu theorem for non-planar topologies and of shifts and deformations of the integration contours. An alternative bottom-up approach starting with complex 1-dimensional MB-integrals, based on the exploration of steepest descent integration contours in Minkowskian kinematics, is also discussed. Short and long term prospects of the MB-method for multi-loop applications to LHC- and LC-physics are discussed.

It took another 30 years to calculate the complete electroweak two-loop corrections to $\sin^2θ_{eff}^b$. The main obstacle was the calculation of the O(700) bosonic two-loop vertex integrals with up to three mass scales, at $s=M_Z^2$. We did not perform the usual integral reduction and master evaluation, but chose a completely numerical approach, using two different calculational chains. One method relies on publicly available sector decomposition implementations. Further, we derived Mellin-Barnes (MB) representations, exploring the publicly available MB suite. We had to supplement the MB suite by two new packages: AMBRE~3, a Mathematica program, for the efficient treatment of non-planar integrals and MBnumerics for advanced numerics in the Minkowskian space-time. Our preliminary result for LL2016, the "dessert", for the electroweak bosonic two-loop contributions to $\sin^2θ_{eff}^b$ is: $Δ\sin^2θ_{eff}^{b(α^2,\rm bos)} = \sin^2θ_W ~ Δκ_b^{(α^2,bos)}$, with $Δκ_b^{(α^2,bos)} = -1.0276 x 10^{-4}$. This contribution is about a quarter of the corresponding fermionic corrections and of about the same magnitude as several of the known higher-order QCD corrections. The $\sin^2θ_{eff}^b$ is now predicited in the Standard Model with a relative error of $10^{-4}$ [1].

Numerical predictions are presented in the form of a fitting formula as function of $M_Z, M_W, M_H, m_t$ and $Δα$, ${α_{\rm s}}$. For central input values, we obtain a relative correction of $Δκ_{\rm b}^{(α^2,\rm bos)} = -0.9855 \times 10^{-4}$, amounting to about a quarter of the fermionic corrections, and corresponding to $\sin^2θ_{\rm eff}^{\rm b} = 0.232704$. We consider pseudoscalar, vector and scalar meson fields interacting with fermion ones via the Yukawa-type couplings to introduce trial interactions between "bare" particles. The subsequent unitary clothing transformations (UCTs) are found to express the total Hamiltonian through new interaction operators that refer to particles with physical (observable) properties, the so-called clothed particles. In this work, we are focused upon the Hermitian and energy-independent operators for the clothed nucleons, being built up in the second order in the coupling constants. The corresponding analytic expressions in momentum space are compared with the separate meson contributions to the one-boson-exchange potentials in the meson theory of nuclear forces. In order to evaluate the T-matrix of the N-N scattering we have used an equivalence theorem that enables us to operate in the clothed particle representation (CPR) instead of the bare particle representation (BPR) with its large amount of virtual processes. We have derived the Lippmann-Schwinger type equation for the CPR elements of the T-matrix for a given collision energy in the two-nucleon sector of the Hilbert space of hadronic states.
