The successful theoretical prediction and experimental demonstration of hybrid improper ferroelectricity (HIF) provides a new pathway to couple octahedral rotations, ferroelectricity, and magnetism in complex materials. To enable technological applications, a HIF with a small coercive field is desirable. We successfully grow Sr3Sn2O7 single crystals, and discover that they exhibit the smallest electric coercive field at room temperature among all known HIFs. Furthermore, we demonstate that a small external stress can repeatedly erase and re-generate ferroelastic domains. In addition, using in-plane piezo-response force microscopy, we characterize abundant charged and neutral domain walls. The observed small electrical and mechanical coercive field values are in accordance with the results of our first-principles calculations on Sr3Sn2O7, which show low energy barriers for both 90° and 180° polarization switching compared to those in other experimentally demonstrated HIFs. Our findings represent an advance towards the possible technological implemetation of functional HIFs.

In solids, charge polarity can one-to-one correspond to spin polarity phenomenologically, e.g. ferroelectricity/ferromagnetism, antiferroelectricity/antiferromagnetism, and even dipole-vortex/magnetic-vortex, but ferrielectricity/ferrimagnetism kept telling a disparate story in microscopic level. Since the definition of a charge dipole involves more than one ion, there may be multiple choices for a dipole unit, which makes most ferrielectric orders equivalent to ferroelectric ones, i.e. this ferrielectricity is not necessary to be a real independent branch of polarity. In this work, by using the spherical aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope, we visualize a nontrivial ferrielectric structural evolution in BaFe2Se3, in which the development of two polar sub-lattices is out-of-sync, for which we term it as irreducible ferrielectricity. Such irreducible ferrielectricity leads to a non-monotonic behavior for the temperature-dependent polarization, and even a compensation point in the ordered state. Our finding unambiguously distinguishes ferrielectrics from ferroelectrics in solids.

There is an influx of heterogeneous information network (HIN) based recommender systems in recent years since HIN is capable of characterizing complex graphs and contains rich semantics. Although the existing approaches have achieved performance improvement, while practical, they still face the following problems. On one hand, most existing HIN-based methods rely on explicit path reachability to leverage path-based semantic relatedness between users and items, e.g., metapath-based similarities. These methods are hard to use and integrate since path connections are sparse or noisy, and are often of different lengths. On the other hand, other graph-based methods aim to learn effective heterogeneous network representations by compressing node together with its neighborhood information into single embedding before prediction. This weakly coupled manner in modeling overlooks the rich interactions among nodes, which introduces an early summarization issue. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end Neighborhood-based Interaction Model for Recommendation (NIRec) to address the above problems. Specifically, we first analyze the significance of learning interactions in HINs and then propose a novel formulation to capture the interactive patterns between each pair of nodes through their metapath-guided neighborhoods. Then, to explore complex interactions between metapaths and deal with the learning complexity on large-scale networks, we formulate interaction in a convolutional way and learn efficiently with fast Fourier transform. The extensive experiments on four different types of heterogeneous graphs demonstrate the performance gains of NIRec comparing with state-of-the-arts. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work providing an efficient neighborhood-based interaction model in the HIN-based recommendations.

Solution-processed planar perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs) promise high-performance and cost-effective electroluminescent (EL) devices ideal for large-area display and lighting applications. Exploiting emission layers with high ratios of horizontal transition dipole moments (TDMs) is expected to boost photon outcoupling of planar LEDs. However, LEDs based on anisotropic perovskite nanoemitters remains to be inefficient (external quantum efficiency, EQE <5%), due to the difficulties of simultaneously controlling the orientations of TDMs, achieving high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) and realizing charge balance in the films of the assembled nanostructures. Here we demonstrate efficient EL from an in-situ grown continuous perovskite film comprising of a monolayer of face-on oriented nanoplatelets. The ratio of horizontal TDMs of the perovskite nanoplatelet films is ~84%, substantially higher than that of isotropic emitters (67%). The nanoplatelet film shows a high PLQY of ~75%. These merits enable LEDs with a peak EQE of 23.6%, representing the most efficient perovskite LEDs.

In most galaxies like the Milky Way, stars form in clouds of molecular gas. Unlike the CO emission that traces the bulk of molecular gas, the rotational transitions of HCN and CS molecules mainly probe the dense phase of molecular gas, which has a tight and almost linear relation with the far-infrared luminosity and star formation rate. However, it is unclear if dense molecular gas exists at very low metallicity, and if exists, how it is related to star formation. In this work, we report ALMA observations of the CS $J$=5$\rightarrow$4 emission line of DDO~70, a nearby gas-rich dwarf galaxy with $\sim7\%$ solar metallicity. We did not detect CS emission from all regions with strong CO emission. After stacking all CS spectra from CO-bright clumps, we find no more than a marginal detection of CS $J$=5$\rightarrow$4 transition, at a signal-to-noise ratio of $\sim 3.3$. This 3-$σ$ upper limit deviates from the $L^\prime_{\rm CS}$-$L_{\rm IR}$ and $L^\prime_{\rm CS}$-SFR relationships found in local star forming galaxies and dense clumps in the Milky Way, implying weaker CS emission at given IR luminosity and SFR. We discuss the possible mechanisms that suppress CS emission at low metallicity.

Typical building material attenuations in these high frequency ranges are of interest for link budget calculations. In this paper, we report on a collaborative measurement campaign to find the attenuation of several typical building materials in three potential mmWave bands (28, 73, 91 GHz). Using directional antennas, we took multiple measurements at multiple locations using narrow-band and wide-band signals, and averaged out residual small-scale fading effects. Materials include clear glass, drywall (plasterboard), plywood, acoustic ceiling tile, and cinder blocks. Specific attenuations range from approximately 0.5 dB/cm for ceiling tile at 28 GHz to approximately 19 dB/cm for clear glass at 91 GHz.

This paper proposes Quantizable DNNs, a special type of DNNs that can flexibly quantize its bit-width (denoted as `bit modes' thereafter) during execution without further re-training. To simultaneously optimize for all bit modes, a combinational loss of all bit modes is proposed, which enforces consistent predictions ranging from low-bit mode to 32-bit mode. This Consistency-based Loss may also be viewed as certain form of regularization during training. Because outputs of matrix multiplication in different bit modes have different distributions, we introduce Bit-Specific Batch Normalization so as to reduce conflicts among different bit modes. Experiments on CIFAR100 and ImageNet have shown that compared to quantized DNNs, Quantizable DNNs not only have much better flexibility, but also achieve even higher classification accuracy. Ablation studies further verify that the regularization through the consistency-based loss indeed improves the model's generalization performance.

Randomized iterative algorithms have recently been proposed to solve large-scale linear systems. In this paper, we present a simple randomized extended block Kaczmarz algorithm that exponentially converges in the mean square to the unique minimum $\ell_2$-norm least squares solution of a given linear system of equations. The proposed algorithm is pseudoinverse-free and therefore different from the projection-based randomized double block Kaczmarz algorithm of Needell, Zhao, and Zouzias. We emphasize that our method works for all types of linear systems (consistent or inconsistent, overdetermined or underdetermined, full-rank or rank-deficient). Moreover, our approach can utilize efficient implementations on distributed computing units, yielding remarkable improvements in computational time. Numerical examples are given to show the efficiency of the new algorithm.

In this paper we consider the Cauchy problem for $2m$-order stochastic partial differential equations of parabolic type in a class of stochastic Hoelder spaces. The Hoelder estimates of solutions and their spatial derivatives up to order $2m$ are obtained, based on which the existence and uniqueness of solution is proved. An interesting finding of this paper is that the regularity of solutions relies on a coercivity condition that differs when $m$ is odd or even: the condition for odd $m$ coincides with the standard parabolicity condition in the literature for higher-order stochastic partial differential equations, while for even $m$ it depends on the integrability index $p$. The sharpness of the new-found coercivity condition is demonstrated by an example.

Once the momentum is made general covariance, the spin connection part can be interpreted as a gauge potential. The present study consists in two parts, the first is a discussion of the general framework for the general covariant geometric momentum. The second is devoted to a study of a Dirac fermion on a two-dimensional sphere and we show that there is the generalized total angular momentum whose three cartesian components form the $su(2)$ algebra, obtained before by consideration of dynamics of the particle, and we demonstrate that there is no curvature-induced geometric potential for the fermion.

It is known that a species dies out in the long run for small initial data if its evolution obeys a reaction of bistable nonlinearity. Such a phenomenon, which is termed as the strong Allee effect, is well supported by numerous evidence from ecosystems, mainly due to the environmental pollution as well as unregulated harvesting and hunting. To save an endangered species, in this paper we introduce a protection zone that is governed by a Fisher-KPP nonlinearity, and examine the dynamics of a reaction-diffusion model with strong Allee effect and protection zone. We show the existence of two critical values $0<L_*\leq L^*$, and prove that a vanishing-transition-spreading trichotomy result holds when the length of protection zone is smaller than $L_*$; a transition-spreading dichotomy result holds when the length of protection zone is between $L_*$ and $L^*$; only spreading happens when the length of protection zone is larger than $L^*$. This suggests that the protection zone works when its length is larger than the critical value $L_*$. Furthermore, we compare two types of protection zone with the same length: a connected one and a separate one, and our results reveal that the former is better for species spreading than the latter.

Total laser energy was about 59 kJ, and the peak radiation temperature reached about 192 eV. Radiation temperature and pinhole images in gas-filled hohlraum are largely identical but with minor differences with those in vacuum hohlraum. All laser energy can be totally delivered into hohlraum in 3 ns duration even without filled gas in the hohlraum of 1.4 mm diameter. We report the nanoscale electrical imaging results in hexagonal $Lu_{0.6}Sc_{0.4}FeO_3$ single crystals using conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM) and scanning microwave impedance microscopy (MIM). While the dc and ac response of the ferroelectric domains can be explained by the surface band bending, the drastic enhancement of domain wall (DW) ac conductivity is clearly dominated by the dielectric loss due to DW vibration rather than mobile-carrier conduction. Our work provides a unified physical picture to describe the local conductivity of ferroelectric domains and domain walls, which will be important for future incorporation of electrical conduction, structural dynamics, and multiferroicity into high-frequency nano-devices.

The direct domain coupling of spontaneous ferroelectric polarization and net magnetic moment can result in giant magnetoelectric (ME) coupling, which is essential to achieve mutual control and practical applications of multiferroics. Recently, the possible bulk domain coupling, the mutual control of ferroelectricity (FE) and weak ferromagnetism (WFM) have been theoretically predicted in hexagonal LuFeO3. Here, we report the first successful growth of highly-cleavable Sc-stabilized hexagonal Lu0.6Sc0.4FeO3 (h-LSFO) single crystals, as well as the first visualization of their intrinsic cloverleaf pattern of vortex FE domains and large-loop WFM domains. The vortex FE domains are on the order of 0.1-1 μm in size. On the other hand, the loop WFM domains are ~100 μm in size, and there exists no interlocking of FE and WFM domain walls. These strongly manifest the decoupling between FE and WFM in h-LSFO. The domain decoupling can be explained as the consequence of the structure-mediated coupling between polarization and dominant in-plane antiferromagnetic spins according to the theoretical prediction, which reveals intriguing interplays between FE, WFM, and antiferromagnetic orders in h-LSFO. Our results also indicate that the magnetic topological charge tends to be identical to the structural topological charge. This could provide new insights into the induction of direct coupling between magnetism and ferroelectricity mediated by structural distortions, which will be useful for the future applications of multiferroics.

We propose to generate a realistic soft SUSY breaking spectrum for Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) with a generalized deflected mirage mediation scenario, in which additional Yukawa and gauge mediation contributions are included to deflect the renormalization group equation(RGE) trajectory. Based on the Wilsonian effective action obtained by integrating out the messengers, the NMSSM soft SUSY breaking spectrum can be given analytically at the messenger scale. We find that additional contributions to $m_S^2$ can possibly ameliorate the stringent constraints from the electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) and 125 GeV Higgs mass. Constraints from dark matter and fine-tuning are also discussed. The Barbieri-Giudice fine-tuning measure and electroweak fine-tuning measure in our scenario can be as low as ${\cal O}(1)$, which possibly indicates that our scenario is natural.

Face detection has been well studied for many years and one of remaining challenges is to detect small, blurred and partially occluded faces in uncontrolled environment. This paper proposes a novel context-assisted single shot face detector, named \emph{PyramidBox} to handle the hard face detection problem. Observing the importance of the context, we improve the utilization of contextual information in the following three aspects. First, we design a novel context anchor to supervise high-level contextual feature learning by a semi-supervised method, which we call it PyramidAnchors. Second, we propose the Low-level Feature Pyramid Network to combine adequate high-level context semantic feature and Low-level facial feature together, which also allows the PyramidBox to predict faces of all scales in a single shot. Third, we introduce a context-sensitive structure to increase the capacity of prediction network to improve the final accuracy of output. In addition, we use the method of Data-anchor-sampling to augment the training samples across different scales, which increases the diversity of training data for smaller faces. By exploiting the value of context, PyramidBox achieves superior performance among the state-of-the-art over the two common face detection benchmarks, FDDB and WIDER FACE. Our code is available in PaddlePaddle: \href{https://github.com/PaddlePaddle/models/tree/develop/fluid/face_detection}{\url{https://github.com/PaddlePaddle/models/tree/develop/fluid/face_detection}}.

For a class of 2D hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite semiconductors based on $π$-conjugated organic cations, we predict quantitatively how varying the organic and inorganic component allows control over the nature, energy and localization of carrier states in a quantum-well-like fashion. Our first-principles predictions, based on large-scale hybrid density-functional theory with spin-orbit coupling, show that the interface between the organic and inorganic parts within a single hybrid can be modulated systematically, enabling us to select between different type-I and type-II energy level alignments. Energy levels, recombination properties and transport behavior of electrons and holes thus become tunable by choosing specific organic functionalizations and juxtaposing them with suitable inorganic components.

Piezoelectric crystals are widely used for acoustic wave resonators of different functioning modes and types including BAW and SAW. It is well-known that only some special orientations of crystals will exhibit desirable properties such as mode couplings, thermal sensitivity, acceleration sensitivity, and others that are important in design and applications of resonators. With extensive studies on physical properties in last decades and increasing industrial needs of novel products, it is necessary to comb the known knowledge of quartz crystal material for novel orientations and better products as agendas in the industry. With known material properties like elastic, piezoelectric, dielectric, and thermal constants, we can establish the relationships between vibrations and bias fields such as temperature to ensure a resonator immunizing from excessive response to changes causing significant degradation of resonator properties and performances. Since the theoretical framework of wave propagation in piezoelectric solids is known, we need to use the existing data and results for the validation of current orientations in actual products. The agreement will give us needed confidence of the theory and analytical procedures. Through rotations, we calculated physical properties as functions of angles and bias fields, enabling the calculation of resonator properties for the identification of optimal cuts. Such a procedure can also be applied to similar crystals for a careful examination of possible orientations to maximize the potential use of materials in acoustic wave resonators.

Controlling the emissivity of a thermal emitter has attracted growing interest with a view towards a new generation of thermal emission devices. So far, all demonstrations have involved sustained external electric or thermal consumption to maintain a desired emissivity. Here control over the emissivity of a thermal emitter consisting of a phase changing material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) film on top of a metal film is demonstrated. This thermal emitter shows broad wavelength-selective spectral emissivity in the mid-infrared. The peak emissivity approaches the ideal blackbody maximum and a maximum extinction ratio of above 10dB is attainable by switching GST between the crystalline and amorphous phases. By controlling the intermediate phases, the emissivity can be continuously tuned. This switchable, tunable, wavelength-selective and thermally stable thermal emitter will pave the way towards the ultimate control of thermal emissivity in the field of fundamental science as well as for energy-harvesting and thermal control applications, including thermophotovoltaics, light sources, infrared imaging and radiative coolers.

Moreover, we propose a Chebyshev spectral method for the integral reformulation. The well-conditioning of these methods is obvious by noting that the resulting linear operator is a compact perturbation of the identity. The adaptive QR approach for the ultraspherical spectral method still applies to the almost-banded infinite-dimensional system arising in the Chebyshev spectral method for the integral reformulation. Numerical examples are given to confirm the well-conditioning of the Chebyshev spectral method.

Purpose: To quantitatively compare the dosimetric and biologic differences in treatment plans from flattened and flattening-filter-free (FFF) beam for three anatomic cancer sites. Methods and Materials: Treatment plans with static intensity-modulated radiotherapy beams and volumetric modulated arc therapy beams were generated for 13 patients for both the flattened beam and the FFF beam of the TrueBeam system. Beam energies of 6 MV and 10 MV were chosen for planning. A total of 104 treatment plans were generated in 13 patients. In order to analyze the biological effectiveness of treatment plans, dose volume histograms (DVH) were utilized. Flattened and FFF beam plans are quantitatively compared. Results: In head and neck cases, for VMAT plans, dose reduction in the FFF beam plans compared to the flattened beam in left cochlea, right submandibular gland and right parotid gland reached up to 2.36 Gy, 1.21 Gy and 1.45 Gy, respectively. Similarly, for static IMRT plans, the dose reduction of the FFF beam plans compared to the flattened beam plans for the same organs reached up to 0.34 Gy, 1.36 Gy and 1.46 Gy, respectively. Overall, for head and neck, the FFF beam plans achieved mean dose reduction of up to 5%, 7% and 9%, respectively for above organs at risk. For lung and prostate cases, the FFF beams provided lower or comparable NTCP values to organ-at-risk (OAR) compared to the flattened beam for all plans. Conclusions: In general, we observed treatment plans utilizing FFF beams can improve dose sparing to OARs without compromising the target coverage. Significant dose sparing effect is obtained for head and neck cancer cases, especially for the cases with relatively large field sizes (about 16x20 cm^2). For lung and prostate cases, compared to the flattened beam, the FFF beam based treatment plans provide lower or comparable dose to most OARs.

By means of variable-composition evolutionary algorithm coupled with density functional theory and in combination with aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscopy experiments, we have studied and characterized the composition, structure and hardness properties of WB$_{3+x}$ ($x$ $<$ 0.5). We provide robust evidence for the occurrence of stoichiometric WB$_3$ and non-stoichiometric WB$_{3+x}$ both crystallizing in the metastable $hP$16 ($P6_3/mmc$) structure. No signs for the formation of the highly debated WB$_4$ (both $hP$20 and $hP$10) phases were found. Our results rationalize the seemingly contradictory high-pressure experimental findings and suggest that the interstitial boron atom is located in the tungsten layer and vertically interconnect with four boron atoms, thus forming a typical three-center boron net with the upper and lower boron layers in a three-dimensional covalent network, which thereby strengthen the hardness.

We propose a new scheme to express the uncertainty principle in form of inequality of the bipartite correlation functions for a given multipartite state, which provides an experimentally feasible and model-independent way to verify various uncertainty and measurement disturbance relations. By virtue of this scheme the implementation of experimental measurement on the measurement disturbance relation to a variety of physical systems becomes practical. The inequality in turn also imposes a constraint on the strength of correlation, i.e. it determines the maximum value of the correlation function for two-body system and a monogamy relation of the bipartite correlation functions for multipartite system.

Stochastic maximum principle for infinite dimensional control systems
Authors:

Abstract:
The general maximum principle is proved for an infinite dimensional controlled stochastic evolution system. The control is allowed to take values in a nonconvex set and enter into both drift and diffusion terms. The operator-valued backward stochastic differential equation, which characterizes the second-order adjoint process, is understood via the concept of "generalized solution" proposed by Gua…

The goal of this paper is to prove a result conjectured in Föllmer and Schachermayer [FS07], even in slightly more general form. Suppose that S is a continuous semimartingale and satisfies a large deviations estimate; this is a particular growth condition on the mean-variance tradeoff process of S. We show that S then allows asymptotic exponential arbitrage with exponentially decaying failure probability, which is a strong and quantitative form of long-term arbitrage. In contrast to Föllmer and Schachermayer [FS07], our result does not assume that S is a diffusion, nor does it need any ergodicity assumption.
