Large-Scale Velocity Structures in the Horologium-Reticulum Supercluster

Abstract: We present 547 optical redshifts obtained for galaxies in the region of the Horologium-Reticulum Supercluster (HRS) using the 6dF multi-fiber spectrograph on the UK Schmidt Telescope at the Anglo Australian Observatory. The HRS covers an area of more than 12deg x 12deg on the sky centered at approximately RA = 03h19m, DEC = -50deg 02amin. Our 6dF observations concentrate upon the inter-cluster r… ▽ More We present 547 optical redshifts obtained for galaxies in the region of the Horologium-Reticulum Supercluster (HRS) using the 6dF multi-fiber spectrograph on the UK Schmidt Telescope at the Anglo Australian Observatory. The HRS covers an area of more than 12deg x 12deg on the sky centered at approximately RA = 03h19m, DEC = -50deg 02amin. Our 6dF observations concentrate upon the inter-cluster regions of the HRS, from which we describe four primary results. First, the HRS spans at least the redshift range from 17,000 to 22,500 km s^-1. Second, the overdensity of galaxies in the inter-cluster regions of the HRS in this redshift range is estimated to be 2.4, or del rho/ rho ~ 1.4. Third, we find a systematic trend of increasing redshift along a Southeast-Northwest (SE-NW) spatial axis in the HRS, in that the mean redshift of HRS members increases by more than 1500 km s^-1 from SE to NW over a 12 deg region. Fourth, the HRS is bi-modal in redshift with a separation of ~ 2500 km s^-1 (35 Mpc) between the higher and lower redshift peaks. This fact is particularly evident if the above spatial-redshift trend is fitted and removed. In short, the HRS appears to consist of two components in redshift space, each one exhibiting a similar systematic spatial-redshift trend along a SE-NW axis. The 2dF-SDSS LRG and QSO Survey: The z<2.1 Quasar Luminosity Function from 5645 Quasars to g=21.85

Abstract: We have used the 2dF instrument on the AAT to obtain redshifts of a sample of z<3, 18.0<g<21.85 quasars selected from SDSS imaging. These data are part of a larger joint programme: the 2dF-SDSS LRG and QSO Survey (2SLAQ). We describe the quasar selection algorithm and present the resulting luminosity function of 5645 quasars in 105.7 deg^2. The bright end number counts and luminosity function ag… ▽ More We have used the 2dF instrument on the AAT to obtain redshifts of a sample of z<3, 18.0<g<21.85 quasars selected from SDSS imaging. These data are part of a larger joint programme: the 2dF-SDSS LRG and QSO Survey (2SLAQ). We describe the quasar selection algorithm and present the resulting luminosity function of 5645 quasars in 105.7 deg^2. The bright end number counts and luminosity function agree well with determinations from the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey (2QZ) data to g\sim20.2. However, at the faint end the 2SLAQ number counts and luminosity function are steeper than the final 2QZ results from Croom et al. (2004), but are consistent with the preliminary 2QZ results from Boyle et al. (2000). Using the functional form adopted for the 2QZ analysis, we find a faint end slope of beta=-1.78+/-0.03 if we allow all of the parameters to vary and beta=-1.45+/-0.03 if we allow only the faint end slope and normalization to vary. Our maximum likelihood fit to the data yields 32% more quasars than the final 2QZ parameterization, but is not inconsistent with other g>21 deep surveys. The 2SLAQ data exhibit no well defined ``break'' but do clearly flatten with increasing magnitude. The shape of the quasar luminosity function derived from 2SLAQ is in good agreement with that derived from type I quasars found in hard X-ray surveys. [Abridged] △ Less

Applying Machine Learning to Catalogue Matching in Astrophysics

Previous wo… ▽ More We present the results of applying automated machine learning techniques to the problem of matching different object catalogues in astrophysics. In this study we take two partially matched catalogues where one of the two catalogues has a large positional uncertainty. The two catalogues we used here were taken from the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS), and SuperCOSMOS optical survey. Previous work had matched 44% (1887 objects) of HIPASS to the SuperCOSMOS catalogue. A supervised learning algorithm was then applied to construct a model of the matched portion of our catalogue. Validation of the model shows that we achieved a good classification performance (99.12% correct). Applying this model, to the unmatched portion of the catalogue found 1209 new matches. This increases the catalogue size from 1887 matched objects to 3096. The combination of these procedures yields a catalogue that is 72% matched. △ Less

Inter-cluster Filaments of Galaxies Programme: Abundance and Distribution of Filaments in the 2dFGRS Catalogue

We introduce a filament classification scheme and cast the filaments into several types according to their visual morphology: straight (lying on the cluster-cluster axis; 37 per cent), warped or curved (lying off the cluster-cluster axis; 33 per cent), sheets (planar configurations of galaxies; 3 per cent), uniform (1 per cent) and irregular (26 per cent). We find that straight filaments are more likely to reside between close cluster pairs and they become more curved with increasing cluster separation. This curving is toward a larger mass concentration in general. We also show that the more massive a cluster is, the more likely it is to have a larger number of filaments. Our results are found to be consistent with a Lambda cold dark matter cosmology. △ Less

Cluster cannibalism and scaling relations of galactic stellar nuclei

It is unclear how these compact stellar systems -- known as ``ultra-compact dwarf'' (UCD) galaxies or ``nuclear clusters'' (NCs) -- form and evolve. By adopting a formation scenario where these stellar systems are the product of multiple merging of star clusters in the central regions of galaxies, we investigate, numerically, their physical properties. We find that physical correlations between velocity dispersion, luminosity, effective radius, and average surface brightness in the stellar merger remnants are quite different from those observed in globular clusters. We also find that the remnants have triaxial shapes with or without figure rotation, and these shapes and their kinematics depend strongly on the initial number and distribution of the progenitor clusters. These specific predictions can be compared with the corresponding results of ongoing and future observations of UCDs and NCs, thereby providing a better understanding of the origin of these enigmatic objects. △ Less

RMS noise for this survey is 13 mJy/beam and the velocity range is -1,280 to 12,700 k… ▽ More The HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS) Catalogue forms the largest uniform catalogue of HI sources compiled to date, with 4,315 sources identified purely by their HI content. The catalogue data comprise the southern region declination <+2 deg of HIPASS, the first blind HI survey to cover the entire southern sky. RMS noise for this survey is 13 mJy/beam and the velocity range is -1,280 to 12,700 km/s. Data search, verification and parametrization methods are discussed along with a description of measured quantities. Full catalogue data are made available to the astronomical community including positions, velocities, velocity widths, integrated fluxes and peak flux densities. Also available are on-sky moment maps, position-velocity moment maps and spectra of catalogue sources. A number of local large-scale features are observed in the space distribution of sources including the Super-Galactic plane and the Local Void. This paper describes in detail the completeness and reliability of HICAT, which are calcu… ▽ More The HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS) is a blind extragalactic HI 21-cm emission line survey covering the whole southern sky from declination -90 to +25. The HIPASS catalogue (HICAT), containing 4315 HI-selected galaxies from the region south of declination +2, is presented in Meyer et al. (2004a, Paper I). This paper describes in detail the completeness and reliability of HICAT, which are calculated from the recovery rate of synthetic sources and follow-up observations, respectively. HICAT is found to be 99 per cent complete at a peak flux of 84 mJy and an integrated flux of 9.4 Jy km/s. The overall reliability is 95 per cent, but rises to 99 per cent for sources with peak fluxes >58 mJy or integrated flux > 8.2 Jy km/s. Expressions are derived for the uncertainties on the most important HICAT parameters: peak flux, integrated flux, velocity width, and recessional velocity. The errors on HICAT parameters are dominated by the noise in the HIPASS data, rather than by the parametrization procedure. △ Less

The expected HI mass of these groups was estimated using the luminosity, diameter and morphological types of the member galaxies, calibrated from published data. Taking careful account of non-detection limits, the results show that the compact group population that has been detected by these observations has an HI content similar to that of galaxies in the reference field sample. The upper limits for the undetected groups lie within the normal range; improvement of these limits will require a large increase in sensitivity. △ Less

The Large Scale Distribution of Galaxies in the Shapley Supercluster

Our data reveal that the main… ▽ More We present new results of our wide-field redshift survey of galaxies in a 182 square degree region of the Shapley Supercluster (SSC) based on observations with the FLAIR-II spectrograph on the UK Schmidt Telescope. We present new measurements to give a total sample of redshifts for 710 bright (R<16.6) galaxies, of which 464 are members of the SSC (8000<v<18000 kms). Our data reveal that the main plane of the SSC extends further than previously realised, filling the whole extent of our survey region of 10 degrees by 20 degrees on the sky (35 Mpc by 70 Mpc). There is also a significant structure associated with the slightly nearer Abell 3571 cluster complex with a caustic structure evident out to a radius of 6 Mpc. These galaxies seem to link two previously identified sheets of galaxies and establish a connection with a third one at v=15000 kms. They also tend to fill the gap of galaxies between the foreground Hydra-Centaurus region and the more distant SSC. We calculate galaxy overdensities of 5.0+/-0.1 over the 182 square degree region surveyed and 3.3+/-0.1 in a 159 square degree region excluding rich clusters. △ Less

We describe our data reduction pipeline and show that our photometric error is 0.04 mags. By selecting galaxies that lie on the colour-magnitude relation of the two clusters we verify the existence of a low density (approx 3-4 square Mpc) filament population conjoining them at a distance of > 3 r_{Abell} from either cluster. By applying a simple field correction, we characterize this filament population by examining their colour distribution on a (V-R)-(B-V) plane. We confirm the galaxian filament detection at a 7.5 sigma level using a cut at M_V=-18 and we discuss their broad properties. △ Less

Galaxy threshing and the origin of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies in the Fornax cluster

In order to clarify the origin of these objects, we have used self-consistent numerical simulations to study the dynamical evolution a nucleated dwarf galaxy would undergo if orbiting the cent… ▽ More A recent all-object spectroscopic survey centred on the Fornax cluster of galaxies, has discovered a population of sub-luminous and extremely compact members, called ``ultra-compact dwarf'' (UCD) galaxies. In order to clarify the origin of these objects, we have used self-consistent numerical simulations to study the dynamical evolution a nucleated dwarf galaxy would undergo if orbiting the center of the Fornax cluster and suffering from its strong tidal gravitational field. We find that the outer stellar components of a nucleated dwarf are removed by the strong tidal field of the cluster, whereas the nucleus manages to survive as a result of its initially compact nature. The developed naked nucleus is found to have physical properties (e.g., size and mass) similar to those observed for UCDs. We also find that although this formation process does not have a strong dependence on the initial total luminosity of the nucleated dwarf, it does depend on the radial density profile of the dark halo in the sense that UCDs are less likely to be formed from dwarfs embedded in dark matter halos with central `cuspy' density profiles. Our simulations also suggest that very massive and compact stellar systems can be rapidly and efficiently formed in the central regions of dwarfs through the merging of smaller star clusters. We provide some theoretical predictions on the total number and radial number density profile of UCDs in a cluster and their dependences on cluster masses. △ Less

Direct evidence for these processes, however, has been difficult to obtain, with a small number of diffuse light trails and intra-cluster stars being the only signs of galaxy disruption. Furthermore, our current knowledge of dwarf gala… ▽ More Dwarf galaxies have attracted increased attention in recent years, because of their susceptibility to galaxy transformation processes within rich galaxy clusters. Direct evidence for these processes, however, has been difficult to obtain, with a small number of diffuse light trails and intra-cluster stars being the only signs of galaxy disruption. Furthermore, our current knowledge of dwarf galaxy populations may be very incomplete, because traditional galaxy surveys are insensitive to extremely diffuse or compact galaxies. Aware of these concerns, we recently undertook an all-object survey of the Fornax galaxy cluster. This revealed a new population of compact members, overlooked in previous conventional surveys. Here we demonstrate that these 'ultra-compact' dwarf galaxies are structurally and dynamically distinct from both globular star clusters and known types of dwarf galaxy, and thus represent a new class of dwarf galaxy. Our data are consistent with the interpretation that these are the remnant nuclei of disrupted dwarf galaxies, making them an easily observed tracer of galaxy disruption. △ Less

Abstract: We present a new accurate measurement of the HI mass function of galaxies from the HIPASS Bright Galaxy Catalog, a sample of 1000 galaxies with the highest HI peak flux densities in the southern hemisphere (Koribalski et al. 2003). We develop a bivariate maximum likelihood technique to measure the space density of galaxies, and show that this is a robust method, insensitive to the effects of large scale structure. The resulting HI mass function can be fitted satisfactorily with a Schechter function with faint-end slope alpha=-1.30. This slope is found to be dependent on morphological type, with later type galaxies giving steeper slopes. We extensively test various effects that potentially bias the determination of the HI mass function, including peculiar motions of galaxies, large scale structure, selection bias, and inclination effects, and quantify these biases. The large sample of galaxies enables an accurate measurement of the cosmological mass density of neutral gas: Omega_HI=(3.8 +/- 0.6) x 10^{-4}. Our preferred explanation for their origin is that they are the remnant nuclei of dwarf elliptical galaxies which have been tidally stripped, or ``threshed'' by repeated encounters with the central cluster galaxy, NGC1399. If correct, then tidal strip** of nucleated dwarfs to form UCDs may, over a Hubble time, be an important source of the plentiful globular cluster population in the halo of NGC1399, and, by implication, other cD galaxies. In this picture, the dwarf elliptical halo contents, up to 99% of the original dwarf luminosity, contribute a significant fraction of the populations of intergalactic stars, globulars, and gas in galaxy clusters. △ Less

The Large Scale Distribution of Neutral Hydrogen in the Fornax Region

None of the detections has early-type morphology. Previously unknown velocities for 14 galaxies have been determined, with a further 4 velocity measurements being significantly dissimilar to published values. Identification of an optical counterpart is relatively unambiguous for more than ~90% of our HI galaxies. The galaxies appear to be embedded in a sheet at the cluster velocity which extends for more than 30 deg across the search area. At the nominal cluster distance of ~20 Mpc, this corresponds to an elongated structure more than 10 Mpc in extent. A velocity gradient across the structure is detected, with radial velocities increasing by \~500 km/s from SE to NW. The clustering of galaxies evident in optical surveys is only weakly suggested in the spatial distribution of our HI detections. Our results suggest a considerable deficit of HI-rich galaxies in the centre of the cluster. However, relative to the field, there is a 3(+/-1)-fold excess of HI-rich galaxies in the outer parts of the cluster where galaxies may be infalling towards the cluster for the first time. △ Less

A sample of 24 Fornax Cluster members has been identified from the first 2dF field (3.1 sq deg in area) to be comp… ▽ More The Fornax Cluster Spectroscopic Survey (FCSS) project utilises the 2dF multi-object spectrograph on the AAT. Its aim is to obtain spectra for a complete sample of all 14000 objects with 16.5<bj<19.7 irrespective of their morphology in a 12 sq deg area centred on the Fornax Cluster. A sample of 24 Fornax Cluster members has been identified from the first 2dF field (3.1 sq deg in area) to be completed. This is the first complete smaple of cluster objects of known distance with well defined selection limits. 19 of the galaxies (with -15.8<M_B<-12.7) appear to be conventional dwarf elliptical or dwarf S0 galaxies. The other 5 objects (with -13.6<M_B<-11.3) are those galaxies which we described in Drinkwater et al (2002b) and labelled `Ultra-Compact Dwarfs' (UCDs). A major result is that the conventional dwarfs all have scale-sizes>3 arcsec (abut 300 pc). This apparent minimum scale size implies an equivalent minimum luminosity for a dwarf of a given surface brightness. This produces a limit on their distribution in the magnitude-surface brightness plane, such that we do not observe dEs with high surface brightnesses but faint absolute magnitudes. Above this observed minimum scale-size of 3 arcsec, the dEs and dS0s fill the whole area of the magnitude-surface brightness plane sampled by our selection limits. The observed correlation between magnitude and surface brightness noted by several recent studies of brighter galaxies is not seen with our fainter cluster sample. A comparison of our results with the Fornax Cluster Catalog (FCC) of Ferguson illustrates that attempts to determine cluster membership solely on the basis of observed morphology can produce significant errors. △ Less

The Neutral Hydrogen Content of Fornax Cluster Galaxies

The resulting sample, the most comprehensive to date, is used to investigate the distribution of HI in the cluster galaxies. We compare the HI content of the detected cluster galaxies with that of field galaxies by measuring HI mass-to-light ratios and the HI deficiency p… ▽ More We present a new set of deep HI observations of member galaxies of the Fornax cluster. We detected 35 cluster galaxies in HI. The resulting sample, the most comprehensive to date, is used to investigate the distribution of HI in the cluster galaxies. We compare the HI content of the detected cluster galaxies with that of field galaxies by measuring HI mass-to-light ratios and the HI deficiency parameter of Solanes et al. (1996). The mean HI mass-to-light ratio of the cluster galaxies is 0.68+/-0.15, significantly lower than for a sample of HI-selected field galaxies (1.15+/-0.10), although not as low as in the Virgo cluster (0.45+/-0.03). The mean HI deficiency for the cluster is 0.38+/-0.09 (for T=1-6), significantly greater than for the field sample (0.05+/-0.03). Both these tests show that Fornax cluster galaxies are HI-deficient compared to field galaxies. The kinematics of the cluster galaxies suggests that the HI deficiency may be caused by ram-pressure strip** of galaxies on orbits that pass close to the cluster core. We also derive the most complete B-band TF relation of inclined spiral galaxies in Fornax. A subcluster in the South-West of the main cluster contributes considerably to the scatter. The scatter for galaxies in the main cluster alone is 0.50mag, which is slightly larger than the intrinsic scatter of 0.4mag. We use the TF relation to derive a distance modulus of Fornax relative to the Virgo cluster of -0.38+/-0.14mag. The galaxies in the subcluster are 1.0+/-0.5mag brighter than the galaxies of the main cluster, indicating that they are situated in the foreground. With their mean velocity 95km/s higher than that of the main cluster we conclude that the subcluster is falling into the main Fornax cluster. △ Less

The Spectra of Red Quasars

Abstract: We measure the spectral properties of a representative sub-sample of 187 quasars, drawn from the Parkes Half-Jansky, Flat-radio-spectrum Sample (PHFS). Quasars with a wide range of rest-frame optical/UV continuum slopes are included in the analysis: their colours range from 2 < B-K < 7. The median H-beta and [O III] emission-line equivalent widths of the red quasar sub-sample are a factor of t… ▽ More We measure the spectral properties of a representative sub-sample of 187 quasars, drawn from the Parkes Half-Jansky, Flat-radio-spectrum Sample (PHFS). Quasars with a wide range of rest-frame optical/UV continuum slopes are included in the analysis: their colours range from 2 < B-K < 7. The median H-beta and [O III] emission-line equivalent widths of the red quasar sub-sample are a factor of ten weaker than those of the blue quasar sub-sample. Both the colours and the emission-line equivalent widths of the red quasars can be explained by the addition of a featureless red synchrotron continuum component to an otherwise normal blue quasar spectrum. The relative strengths of the blue and red components span two orders of magnitude at rest-frame 500nm. The blue component is weaker relative to the red component in low optical luminosity sources. This suggests that the fraction of accretion energy going into optical emission from the jet is greater in low luminosity quasars. This synchrotron model does not, however, fit around 10% of the quasars, which have both red colours and high equivalent width emission-lines. We hypothesise that these red, strong-lined quasars have intrinsically weak Big Blue Bumps. There is no discontinuity in spectral properties between the BL Lac objects in our sample and the other quasars. The synchrotron emission component only dominates the spectrum at longer wavelengths, so existing BL Lac surveys will be biassed against high redshift objects. △ Less

Among the unresolved or marginally resolved targets we have found five objects… ▽ More By utilising the large multi-plexing advantage of the 2dF spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope, we have been able to obtain a complete spectroscopic sample of all objects in a predefined magnitude range, 16.5<Bj<19.7, regardless of morphology, in an area towards the centre of the Fornax Cluster of galaxies. Among the unresolved or marginally resolved targets we have found five objects which are actually at the redshift of the Fornax Cluster, i.e. they are extremely compact dwarf galaxies or extremely large star clusters. All five have absorption line spectra. With intrinsic sizes less than 1.1 arc second HWHM (corresponding to approximately 100 pc at the distance of the cluster), they are more compact and significantly less luminous than other known compact dwarf galaxies, yet much brighter than any globular cluster. In this letter we present new ground based optical observations of these enigmatic objects. In addition to having extremely high central surface brightnesses, these objects show no evidence of any surrounding low surface brightness envelopes down to much fainter limits than is the case for, e.g., nucleated dwarf ellipticals. Thus, if they are not merely the stripped remains of some other type of galaxy, then they appear to have properties unlike any previously known type of stellar system. △ Less

The cluster dynamics show th… ▽ More We present the results of a spectroscopic survey of 675 bright (16.5<Bj<18) galaxies in a 6 degree field centred on the Fornax cluster with the FLAIR-II spectrograph on the UK Schmidt Telescope. We measured redshifts for 516 galaxies of which 108 were members of the Fornax Cluster. Nine of these are new cluster members previously misidentified as background galaxies. The cluster dynamics show that the dwarf galaxies are still falling into the cluster whereas the giants are virialised. Our spectral data reveal a higher rate of star formation among the dwarf galaxies than suggested by morphological classification: 35 per cent have H-alpha emission indicative of star formation but only 19 per cent were morphologically classified as late-types. The distribution of scale sizes is consistent with evolutionary processes which transform late-type dwarfs to early-type dwarfs. The fraction of dwarfs with active star formation drops rapidly towards the cluster centre. The star-forming dwarfs are concentrated in the outer regions of the cluster, the most extreme in an infalling subcluster. We estimate gas depletion time scales for 5 dwarfs with detected HI emission: these are long (of order 10 Gyr), indicating that active gas removal must be involved if they are transformed into gas-poor dwarfs as they fall further into the cluster. In agreement with our previous results, we find no compact dwarf elliptical (M32-like) galaxies in the Fornax Cluster. △ Less

Using the 6dF galaxy redshift survey to detect gravitationally-lensed quasars

Improved constraints on possible variation of physical constants from H I 21cm and molecular QSO absorption lines

Comparison of H I 21cm absorption with corresponding molecular (rotational) absorption spectra allows us to constrain variation in y=alpha^2*g_p where alpha is the fine structure constant and g_p is the proton g-factor. We analyse spectra of two QSOs, PKS 1413+135 and TXS 02… ▽ More QSO absorption spectra provide an extremely useful probe of possible cosmological variation in various physical constants. We find dy/y=(-0.20 +/- 0.44)*10^{-5} and dy/y=(-0.16 +/- 0.54)*10^{-5} respectively, indicating an insignificantly smaller y in the past. The dwarf galaxies form a distinct population: their velocity dispersion (429+/-41 km/s) is larger than that of the giants (308+/-30 km/s) at the 98 per cent confidence level. This suggests that the dwarf population is dominated by infalling objects whereas the giants are virialized. The Fornax system has two components; the main Fornax Cluster centered on NGC 1399 with mean velocity 1478 km/s and velocity dispersion 370 km/s, and a subcluster centered 3 degrees to the south-west including NGC 1316 with mean velocity 1583 km/s and velocity dispersion 377 km/s. This partition is preferred over a single cluster at the 99 per cent confidence level. The subcluster, a site of intense star formation, is bound to Fornax and probably infalling towards the cluster core for the first time. An Extragalactic HI Cloud with No Optical Counterpart?

Abstract: We report the discovery, from the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS), of an isolated cloud of neutral hydrogen which we believe to be extragalactic. The HI mass of the cloud (HIPASS J1712-64) is very low, 1.7 x 10^7 Msun, using an estimated distance of ~3.2 Mpc. Most significantly, we have found no optical companion to this object to very faint limits (mu(B)~ 27 mag arcsec^-2). HIPASS J1712-64 appears to be a binary system similar to, but much less massive than, HI 1225+01 (the Virgo HI Cloud) and has a size of at least 15 kpc. The mean velocity dispersion, measured with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), is only 4 km/s for the main component and because of the weak or non-existent star-formation, possibly reflects the thermal linewidth (T<2000 K) rather than bulk motion or turbulence. The peak column density for HIPASS J1712-64, from the combined Parkes and ATCA data, is only 3.5 x 10^19 cm^-2, which is estimated to be a factor of two below the critical threshold for star formation. Apart from its significantly higher velocity, the properties of HIPASS J1712-64 are similar to the recently recognised class of Compact High Velocity Clouds. We therefore consider the evidence for a Local Group or Galactic origin, although a more plausible alternative is that HIPASS J1712-64 was ejected from the interacting Magellanic Cloud/Galaxy system at perigalacticon ~ 2 x 10^8 yr ago. △ Less

Unravelling Active Galactic Nuclei

An Extended View of the Fornax Cluster

At the cluster distance of about 15 Mpc, this corresponds to an elongated large-scale structure (LSS) more than 7 Mpc in extent. Galaxies were detected to a lower mass limit of 1x10^8M_sun and fewer than 25 of these were within the central 40 sq.deg, suggesting considerable HI depletion of galaxies in the centre of the cluster. Hidden Galaxies in the Fornax Cluster

In the optical the survey is unique in that all objects (both ``stars'' and ``galaxies'') within our magnitude limits (Bj=16.5 to 19.7) are measured, producing the most complete survey of cluster members irrespective of surface brightness. We have detected two new classes of high surface brightness dwarf galaxy in the cluster. With 2dF we have discovered a population of very low luminosity (Mb approx -12) objects which are unresolved from the ground and may be the stripped nuclei of dwarf galaxies; they are unlike any known galaxies. In a survey of the brighter (Bj=16.5 to 18) galaxies with the FLAIR-II spectrograph we have found a number of new high surface brightness dwarf galaxies and show that the fraction of star-forming dwarf galaxies in the cluster is about 30 per cent, about twice that implied by earlier morphological classifications. Our radio observations have greatly improved upon the sensitivity of the standard Multibeam survey by using a new ``basket weave'' scanning pattern. Our initial analysis shows that we are detecting new cluster members with HI masses of order 10-to-the-8 Msun and HI mass-to-light ratios of 1-2 Msun/Lsun. △ Less

Compact Stellar Systems in the Fornax Cluster: Super-massive Star Clusters or Extremely Compact Dwarf Galaxies?

These objects have spectra typical of old stellar systems, but are unresolved on photographic sky survey plates. They have absolute magnitudes -13<Mb<-11, so they are 10 times more luminous than any Galactic globular clusters, but fainter than any… ▽ More We describe a population of compact objects in the centre of the Fornax Cluster which were discovered as part of our 2dF Fornax Spectroscopic Survey. These objects have spectra typical of old stellar systems, but are unresolved on photographic sky survey plates. They have absolute magnitudes -13<Mb<-11, so they are 10 times more luminous than any Galactic globular clusters, but fainter than any known compact dwarf galaxies. These objects are all within 30 arcminutes of the central galaxy of the cluster, NGC 1399, but are distributed over larger radii than the globular cluster system of that galaxy. We suggest that these objects are either super-massive star clusters (intra-cluster globular clusters or tidally stripped nuclei of dwarf galaxies) or a new type of low-luminosity compact elliptical dwarf (M32-type) galaxy. The best way to test these hypotheses will be to obtain high resolution imaging and high-dispersion spectroscopy to determine their structures and mass-to-light ratios. By selecting all objects---both stars and galaxies---independent of morphology, we cover a much larger range of surface brightness and scale size than previous surveys. In this paper we present results from the first 2dF field. Redshift distributions and velocity structures are shown for all observed objects in the direction of Fornax, including Galactic stars, galaxies in and around the Fornax Cluster, and for the background galaxy population. The velocity data for the stars show the contributions from the different Galactic components, plus a small tail to high velocities. We find no galaxies in the foreground to the cluster in our 2dF field. The Fornax Cluster is clearly defined kinematically. The mean velocity from the 26 cluster members having reliable redshifts is 1560+/-80 km/s. They show a velocity dispersion of 380+/-50 km/s. Large-scale structure can be traced behind the cluster to a redshift beyond z=0.3. New Structure In The Shapley Supercluster

Abstract: We present new radial velocities for 306 bright (R<16) galaxies in a 77 square deg region of the Shapley supercluster measured with the FLAIR-II spectrograph on the UK Schmidt Telescope. The galaxies we measured were uniformly distributed over the survey area in contrast to previous samples which were concentrated in several rich Abell clusters. In a 44 square deg area of the supercluster excluding the Abell clusters, these sheets alone represent an overdensity of a factor of 2.0+/-0.2 compared to a uniform galaxy distribution. The supercluster is not flattened in the Declination direction as was suggested in previous papers. Within our survey area the new galaxies contribute an additional 50% to the known contents of the Shapley supercluster with a corresponding increase in its contribution to the motion of the local group. △ Less

The surface density of compact galaxies with magnitudes 16.5<Bj<19.7 is 7+/-3 /sq.deg., representing 2.8+/-1.6% of all local (z<0.2) galaxies to this limit. There are 12+/-3 /sq.deg. with 16.5<Bj<20.2. They are luminous (-21.5<Mb<-18.0, for H0=50 km/s/mpc) and most have strong emission lines (H alpha equivalent widths of 40-200 A) and small sizes typical of luminous HII galaxies and compact narrow emission line galaxies. Four out of thirteen have red colors and early-type spectra, so are unlikely to have been detected in any previous surveys. △ Less

Red Parkes-Quasars: Evidence for Soft X-ray Absorption

If this is to be interpreted as extinction by dust in the line-of-sight, then associated material might also give rise to absorption in the soft X-ray regime. This hypothesis is tested using broadband (0.1-2.4 keV) data from the {\it ROSAT} All-Sky Survey provided… ▽ More The Parkes Half-Jansky Flat Spectrum Sample contains a large number of sources with unusually red optical-to-near-infrared continua. Under this simple model, the soft X-rays are absorbed at a level consistent with the range of extinctions ($0< A_{V}< 6$ magnitudes) implied by the observed optical reddening. For quasars, the soft X-ray photon index is correlated with redshift and with radio spectral index. Webster et al. (1995) discovered many sources with unusually red optical continua among the quasars of this sample and interpreted this result in terms of extinction by dust. Although the X-ray spectra in general do not show excess absorption, we find that low-redshift optically red quasars have significantly lower soft X-ray luminosities on average than objects with blue optical continua. The difference disappears for higher redshifts, as is expected for intrinsic absorption by cold gas associated with the dust. Alternative explanations are briefly discussed. We conclude, however, that dust does play an important role in some of the radio-loud quasars with red optical continua. △ Less

The Discovery of the Smallest Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies

These new members are among the most compact, high surface brightness dwarf galaxies known with absolute magnitudes of M_B=-14 and scale lengths of alpha=400 pc… ▽ More In a spectroscopic survey of the Fornax cluster to Bj=17.5 using the FLAIR spectrograph on the UK Schmidt Telescope we have discovered seven new compact dwarf cluster members. These were previously thought to be giant background spirals. These new members are among the most compact, high surface brightness dwarf galaxies known with absolute magnitudes of M_B=-14 and scale lengths of alpha=400 pc. One in particular may be the first high (normal) surface brightness dwarf spiral discovered. Three of the new dwarfs are blue compact dwarfs (BCDs); their inclusion in the cluster increases the faint end of the BCD luminosity function by a factor of 2 or more. We extended the survey 2.5 mag fainter with the 2dF spectrograph and in our first field found 7 bright emission line galaxies beyond the Fornax cluster which were unresolved on the sky survey plates. The Hubble Deep Field-South QSO

Abstract: The Hubble Deep Field-South (HDF-S) was chosen to have a QSO (RA 22:33:37.6 Dec -60:33:29 J2000 and B=17.5) in the field to allow for studies of absorption systems intersecting the sight line to the QSO. To assist in the planning of HDF-S observations we present here a ground-based spectrum of the QSO. We measure a redshift of z=2.24 for the QSO and find associated absorption in the spectrum at… ▽ More The Hubble Deep Field-South (HDF-S) was chosen to have a QSO (RA 22:33:37.6 Dec -60:33:29 J2000 and B=17.5) in the field to allow for studies of absorption systems intersecting the sight line to the QSO. To assist in the planning of HDF-S observations we present here a ground-based spectrum of the QSO. We measure a redshift of z=2.24 for the QSO and find associated absorption in the spectrum at z=2.204 as well as additional absorption features. △ Less

A Search for Time Variation of the Fine Structure Constant

Abstract: A method offering an order of magnitude sensitivity gain is described for using quasar spectra to investigate possible time or space variation in the fine structure constant, alpha. Applying the technique to a sample of 30 absorption systems, spanning redshifts 0.5 < z< 1.6, obtained with the Keck I telescope, we derive limits on variations in alpha over a wide range of epochs. For the whole sample Delta(alpha)/alpha = -1.1 +/- 0.4 x 10^{-5}. This deviation is dominated by measurements at z > 1, where Delta(alpha)/alpha = -1.9 +/- 0.5 x 10^{-5}. For z < 1, Delta(alpha)/alpha = -0.2 +/- 0.4 x 10^{-5}, consistent with other known constraints. Whilst these results are consistent with a time-varying alpha, further work is required to explore possible systematic errors in the data, although careful searches have so far not revealed any. △ Less

A Complete 2dF Survey of Fornax

Abstract: We are using the 2dF spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope to obtain spectra for a complete sample of all 14000 objects with 16.5<B<19.7 in a 12 square degree area centred on the Fornax cluster. The aims of this project include the study of dwarf galaxies in the cluster (both known low surface brightness objects and putative normal surface brightness dwarfs) and a comparison sample of b… ▽ More We are using the 2dF spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope to obtain spectra for a complete sample of all 14000 objects with 16.5<B<19.7 in a 12 square degree area centred on the Fornax cluster. High surface brightness dwarf galaxies in the Fornax cluster

Abstract: We describe a search for compact dwarf galaxies in the Fornax cluster using the FLAIR spectrograph on the UK Schmidt Telescope. We measured radial velocities of 453 compact galaxies brighter than Bt=17.3 and found seven new compact dwarf cluster members that were not classified in previous surveys as members of the cluster. These are amongst the most compact, high surface brightness dwarf galaxi… ▽ More We describe a search for compact dwarf galaxies in the Fornax cluster using the FLAIR spectrograph on the UK Schmidt Telescope. We measured radial velocities of 453 compact galaxies brighter than Bt=17.3 and found seven new compact dwarf cluster members that were not classified in previous surveys as members of the cluster. These are amongst the most compact, high surface brightness dwarf galaxies known. The inclusion of these galaxies in the cluster does not change the total luminosity function significantly but they are important because of their extreme nature; one in particular appears to be a high (normal) surface brightness dwarf spiral. Three of the new dwarfs have strong emission lines and appear to be blue compact dwarfs (BCDs), doubling the number of confirmed BCDs in the cluster. We also determined that none of the compact dwarf elliptical (M32-like) candidates are in the cluster, down to an absolute magnitude Mb=-13.2. We have investigated the claim of Irwin et al. (1990) that there is no strong relation between surface brightness and magnitude for the cluster members and find some support for this for the brighter galaxies (Bt<17.3) but fainter galaxies still need to be measured. △ Less

New Limits on the Possible Variation of Physical Constants

We have compared the frequency of high-redshift Hydrogen 21 cm absorption with that of associated molecular absorption in two quasars to place new (1 sigma) upper limits on any variation in y = g_p.alpha^2 (where alpha is the fine structure constant and g_p is the proton g-factor) of |Delta(y)/y| < 5.10^{-6} at redshifts z=0.25 and z=0.68. These quasars are separated by a comoving distance of 3000 Mpc (H_0=75 km/s/Mpc and q_0=0). We also derive limits on the time rates of change of |(d.g_p/d.t)/g_p| < 10^{-15}/y and |(d.alpha/d.t)/α| < 5.10^{-16}/y between the present epoch and z=0.68. These limits are more than an order of magnitude smaller than previous results derived from high-redshift measurements. △ Less

Abstract: We present a new sample of Parkes half-Jansky flat-spectrum radio sources having made a particular effort to find any previously unidentified sources. The sample contains 323 sources selected according to a flux limit of 0.5 Jy at 2.7 GHz, a spectral index measured between 2.7 and 5.0 GHz of alpha > -0.5 (where S(v) is proportional to v to the power of alpha), Galactic latitude abs(b) > 20 deg a… ▽ More We present a new sample of Parkes half-Jansky flat-spectrum radio sources having made a particular effort to find any previously unidentified sources. The sample contains 323 sources selected according to a flux limit of 0.5 Jy at 2.7 GHz, a spectral index measured between 2.7 and 5.0 GHz of alpha > -0.5 (where S(v) is proportional to v to the power of alpha), Galactic latitude abs(b) > 20 deg and -45 deg < Declination (B1950) < +10 deg. The sample was selected from a region 3.90 steradians in area. We have obtained accurate radio positions for all the unresolved sources in this sample and combined these with accurate optical positions from digitised photographic sky survey data to check all the optical identifications. We report new identifications based on \R- and \Kn-band imaging and new spectroscopic measurements of many of the sources. We present a catalogue of the 323 sources of which 321 now have identified optical counterparts and 277 have measured spectral redshifts. △ Less
