We study functions $f$ on $\mathbb Q$ which statisfy a ``quantum modularity'' relation of the shape
$$ f(x+1)=f(x), \qquad f(x) - |x|^{-k} f(-1/x) = h(x) $$
where $h:\mathbb R_{\neq 0} \to \mathbb C$ is a function satisfying various regularity conditions. We study the case $\Re(k)\neq 0$.
We prove the existence of a limiting function $f^*$ which extends continuously $f$ to $\mathbb R$ in some sense. This means in particular that in the $\Re(k)\neq0$ case the quantum modular form itself has to have at least a certain level of regularity.
We deduce that the values $\{f(a/q), 1\leq a<q, (a, q)=1\}$, appropriately normalized, tend to equidistribute along the graph of $f^*$, and we prove that under natural hypotheses the limiting measure is diffuse.
We apply these results to obtain limiting distributions of values and continuity results for several arithmetic functions known to satisfy the above quantum modularity: higher weight modular symbols associated to holomorphic cusp forms; Eichler integral associated to Maass forms; a function of Kontsevich and Zagier related to the Dedekind $η$-function; and generalized cotangent sums.

In the present paper we study the central values of additive twists of Maaß forms $L$-series. In the case of the modular group, we show that the additive twists (when averaged over denominators) are asymptotically normally distributed. This supplements the recent work of Petridis--Risager which settled an averaged version of a conjecture of Mazur--Rubin concerning modular symbols. The methods of the present paper combine dynamical input due to Bettin and the first named author with the new fact that the additive twists define quantum modular forms in the sense of Zagier. This latter property is shown for a general discrete, co-finite group with cusps. Our results also has a number of arithmetic applications; in the case of Hecke congruence groups the quantum modularity implies certain reciprocity relations for twisted moments of twisted ${\rm GL}_2$-automorphic $L$-functions, extending results of Conrey and the second named author. In the case of cuspidal Maaß forms for the modular group, we also obtain a calculation of certain wide moments of twists of the $L$-function of the Maaß form.

Previously any extension of the support past the range $[-2,2]$ was only known conditionally on deep conjectures about the distribution of primes in arithmetic progressions, beyond the reach of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (e.g Montgomery's conjecture). Our work provides the first example of a family of $L$-functions in which the support is unconditionally extended past the "trivial range" that follows from a simple application of the underlying trace formula (in this case orthogonality of characters). We study the limiting distributions of Birkhoff sums of a large class of cost functions (observables) evaluated along orbits, under the Gauss map, of rational numbers in $(0,1]$ ordered by denominators. We show convergence to a stable law in a general setting, by proving an estimate with power-saving error term for the associated characteristic function. This extends results of Baladi and Vallée on Gaussian behaviour for costs of moderate growth.
We apply our result to obtain the limiting distribution of values of several key examples of quantum modular forms. We show that central values of the Esterman function ($L$ function of the divisor function twisted by an additive character) tend to have a Gaussian distribution, with a large variance. We give a dynamical, "trace formula free" proof that central modular symbols associated with a holomorphic cusp form for $SL(2,{\bf Z})$ have a Gaussian distribution. We also recover a result of Vardi on the convergence of Dedekind sums to a Cauchy law, using dynamical methods.

The black hole candidate MAXI J1836-194 was discovered in 2011 when it went into an outburst, and was the subject of numerous, quasi-simultaneous, multi-wavelength observations in the radio, infrared, optical and X-rays. In this paper, we model its multi-wavelength radio to optical spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with an internal shock jet model. The jet emission is modelled on five dates of the outburst, during which the source is in the hard and hard intermediate X-ray spectral states. The model assumes that fluctuations of the jet velocity are driven by the variability in the accretion flow which is traced by the observed X-ray timing properties of the source. While the global shape of the SED is well reproduced by this model for all the studied observations, the variations in bolometric flux and typical energies require at least two parameters to evolve during the outburst. Here we investigate variations of the jet power and mean Lorentz factor, which are both found to increase with the source luminosity. Our results are compatible with the evolution of the jet Lorentz factor reported in earlier studies of this source. However, due to the large degeneracy of the parameters of the ishem model, our proposed scenario is not unique.

Using the simultaneous Infra-Red (IR) and X-ray light curves obtained by Kalamkar et al. (2016), we perform a Fourier analysis of the IR/X-ray timing correlations of the black hole X-ray binary (BHB) GX 339-4. The resulting IR vs X-ray Fourier coherence and lag spectra are similar to those obtained in previous studies of GX 339-4 using optical light curves. In particular, above 1 Hz, the lag spectrum features an approximately constant IR lag of about 100 ms. We model simultaneously the radio to IR Spectral Energy Distribution (SED), the IR Power Spectral Density (PSD), and the coherence and lag spectra using the jet internal shock model ISHEM assuming that the fluctuations of the jet Lorentz factor are driven by the accretion flow. It turns out that most of the spectral and timing features, including the 100 ms lag, are remarkably well reproduced by this model. The 100 ms time-scale is then associated with the travel time from the accretion flow to the IR emitting zone. Our exploration of the parameter space favours a jet which is at most mildly relativistic ($\barΓ< 3$), and a linear and positive relation between the jet Lorentz factor and X-ray light curve i.e. $Γ(t)-1\propto L_{X}(t)$. The presence of a strong Low Frequency Quasi Periodic Oscillation (LFQPO) in the IR light curve could be caused by jet precession driven by Lense-Thirring precession of the jet-emitting accretion flow. Our simulations confirm that this mechanism can produce an IR LFQPO similar to that observed in GX 339-4.

We consider in particular the special cases where $f$ is the generalized divisor function $τ_z$ with $z\in\mathbb{C}$, and the characteristic function of sums of two squares (or more generally, ideal norms of abelian extensions). As another application, we deduce a full asymptotic expansion in the generalized Titchmarsh divisor problem $\sum_{|h|<n\leq x,\,ω(n)=k} τ(n-h)$, where $ω(n)$ counts the number of distinct prime divisors of $n$, thus extending a result of Fouvry and Bombieri-Friedlander-Iwaniec. We present two different proofs: The first relies on an effective combinatorial formula of Heath-Brown's type for the divisor function $τ_α$ with $α\in\mathbb{Q}$, and an interpolation argument in the $z$-variable for weighted mean values of $τ_z$. The second is based on an identity of Linnik type for $τ_z$ and the well-factorability of friable numbers.

We elaborate on the paradigm proposed in Ferreira et al. (2006), where the increase and decrease in the disk accretion rate is accompanied by a modification of the disk magnetization $μ\propto B_z^2/\dot{m}_{in}$, which in turn determines the dominant torque allowing accretion. For $μ>0.1$, the accretion flow produces jets that vertically, carry away the disk angular momentum (jet-emitting disk or JED). The goal of this paper is to investigate the spectral signatures of the JED configurations. We have developed a two-temperature plasma code that computes the disk local thermal equilibria, taking into account the advection of energy in an iterative way. Our code addresses optically thin-to-thick transitions, both radiation and gas supported regimes and computes in a consistent way the emitted spectrum from a steady-state disk. The optically thin emission is obtained using the BELM code, which provides accurate spectra for bremsstrahlung and synchrotron emission processes as well as for their local Comptonization. For a range in radius and accretion rates, JEDs exhibit three thermal equilibria, one thermally unstable and two stables. Due to the existence of two thermally stable solutions, a hysteresis cycle is naturally obtained. However, standard outbursting X-ray binary cycles cannot be reproduced. Another striking feature of JEDs is their ability to reproduce luminous hard states. Showing that when the loss of angular momentum and power in jets is consistently taken into account, accretion disks have spectral signatures that are consistent with hard states, even up to high luminosities. The reproduction of soft states being well performed by standard accretion disks (SAD), this study argues for the existence of hybrid disk configuration: JED and SAD. A study of such hybrid configuration will be presented in a forthcoming paper III.

We studied X-ray reverberation lags in the BHXRB GX 339-4 at the end of the 2014-2015 outburst. We analysed data from a XMM-Newton campaign covering the end of the transition from the soft to the hard state, and the decrease of luminosity in the hard state. During all the observations we detected, at high frequencies, significant disc variability, responding to variations of the power law emission with an average time delay of $\sim0.009\pm 0.002$ s. These new detections of disc thermal reverberation add to those previously obtained and suggest the lag to be always present in hard and hard-intermediate states. Our study reveals a net decrease of lag amplitude as a function of luminosity. We ascribe this trend to variations of the inner flow geometry. A possible scenario implies a \emph{decrease} of the inner disc truncation radius as the luminosity increases at the beginning of the outburst, followed by an \emph{increase} of the inner disc truncation radius as the luminosity decreases at the end of the outburst. Finally, we found hints of FeK reverberation ($\sim3σ$ significance) during the best quality observation of the XMM monitoring. The lag at the FeK energy has similar amplitude as that of the thermally reprocessed component, as expected if the same irradiated region of the disc is responsible for producing both the thermalized and reflected component. This finding suggests FeK reverberation in BHXRBs to be at the reach of current detectors provided observations of sufficiently long exposure are available.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the possibility that a powerful dark jet is still present in the soft state. Using the black hole X-ray binaries GX339-4 and H1743-322 as test cases, we feed observed X-ray power density spectra in the soft state of these two sources to an internal shock jet model. Remarkably, the predicted radio emission is consistent with current upper-limits. Our results show that, for these two sources, a compact dark jet could persist in the soft state with no major modification of its kinetic power compared to the hard state.

According to a general probabilistic principle, the natural divisors of friable integers (i.e.~free of large prime factors) should normally present a Gaussian distribution. We show that this indeed is the case with conditional density tending to 1 as soon as the standard necessary conditions are met. Furthermore, we provide explicit, essentially optimal estimates for the decay of the involved error terms. The size of the exceptional set is sufficiently small to enable recovery of the average behaviour in the same optimal range. Our argument combines the saddle-point method with new large deviations estimates for the distribution of certain additive functions.

We want to test if self-similar magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) accretion-ejection models can explain the observational results for accretion disk winds in BHBs. In our models, the density at the base of the outflow, from the accretion disk, is not a free parameter, but is determined by solving the full set of dynamical MHD equations without neglecting any physical term. Different MHD solutions were generated for different values of (a) the disk aspect ratio ($\varepsilon$) and (b) the ejection efficiency ($p$). We generated two kinds of MHD solutions depending on the absence (cold solution) or presence (warm solution) of heating at the disk surface. The cold MHD solutions are found to be inadequate to account for winds due to their low ejection efficiency. The warm solutions can have sufficiently high values of $p (\gtrsim 0.1)$ which is required to explain the observed physical quantities in the wind. The heating (required at the disk surface for the warm solutions) could be due to the illumination which would be more efficient in the Soft state. We found that in the Hard state a range of ionisation parameter is thermodynamically unstable, which makes it impossible to have any wind at all, in the Hard state. Our results would suggest that a thermo-magnetic process is required to explain winds in BHBs.

High resolution X-ray spectra of black hole X-ray binaries (BHBs) show blueshifted absorption lines from disk winds which seem to be equatorial. Winds occur in the Softer (disk-dominated) states of the outburst and are less prominent or absent in the Harder (power-law dominated) states. We use self-similar magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) accretion-ejection models to explain the disk winds in BHBs. In our models, the density at the base of the outflow from the accretion disk is not a free parameter, but is determined by solving the full set of dynamical MHD equations. Thus the physical properties of the outflow are controlled by the global structure of the disk. We studied different MHD solutions characterized by different values of (a) the disk aspect ratio ($\varepsilon$) and (b) the ejection efficiency ($p$). We use two kinds of MHD solutions depending on the absence (cold solution) or presence (warm solution) of heating at the disk surface. Such heating could be from e.g. dissipation of energy due to MHD turbulence in the disk or from illumination. We use each of these MHD solutions to predict the physical parameters of an outflow; put limits on the ionization parameter ($ξ$), column density and timescales, motivated by observational results; and thus select regions within the outflow which are consistent with the observed winds. The cold MHD solutions cannot account for winds due to their low ejection efficiency. But warm solutions can explain the observed physical quantities in the wind because they can have sufficiently high values of $p$ ($\gtrsim 0.1$, implying larger mass loading at the base of the outflow). Further from our thermodynamic equilibrium curve analysis for the outflowing gas, we found that in the Hard state a range of $ξ$ is thermodynamically unstable, and had to be excluded. This constrain made it impossible to have any wind at all, in the Hard state.

Over the last decade, the evidence is mounting that several aspects of black hole accretion physics proceed in a mass-invariant way. One of the best examples of this scaling is the empirical "Fundamental Plane of Black Hole Accretion" relation linking mass, radio and X-ray luminosity over eight orders of magnitude in black hole mass. The currently favored theoretical interpretation of this relation is that the physics governing power output in weakly accreting black holes depends more on relative accretion rate than on mass. In order to test this theory, we explore whether a mass-invariant approach can simultaneously explain the broadband spectral energy distributions from two black holes at opposite ends of the mass scale but at similar Eddington accretion fractions. We find that the same model, with the same value of several fitted physical parameters expressed in mass-scaling units to enforce self-similarity, can provide a good description of two datasets from V404 Cyg and M81*, a stellar and supermassive black hole, respectively. Furthermore, only one of several potential emission scenarios for the X-ray band is successful, suggesting it is the dominant process driving the Fundamental Plane relation at this accretion rate. This approach thus holds promise for breaking current degeneracies in the interpretation of black hole high-energy spectra, and for constructing better prescriptions of black hole accretion for use in various local and cosmological feedback applications.

We prove a bound for quintilinear sums of Kloosterman sums, with congruence conditions on the "smooth" summation variables. This generalizes classical work of Deshouillers and Iwaniec, and is key to obtaining power-saving error terms in applications, notably the dispersion method. As a consequence, assuming the Riemann hypothesis for Dirichlet $L$-functions, we prove a power-saving error term in the Titchmarsh divisor problem of estimating $\sum_{p\leq x}τ(p-1)$. Unconditionally, we isolate the possible contribution of Siegel zeroes, showing it is always negative. Extending work of Fouvry and Tenenbaum, we obtain power-saving in the asymptotic formula for $\sum_{n\leq x}τ_k(n)τ(n+1)$, reproving a result announced by Bykovskiĭ and Vinogradov by a different method. The gain in the exponent is shown to be independent of $k$ if a generalized Lindelöf hypothesis is assumed.

In recent years, compact jets have been playing a growing role in the understanding of accreting black hole engines. In the case of X-ray binary systems, compact jets are usually associated with the hard state phase of a source outburst. Recent observations of GX 339-4 have demonstrated the presence of a variable synchrotron spectral break in the mid-infrared band that was associated with its compact jet. In the model used in this study, we assume that the jet emission is produced by electrons accelerated in internal shocks driven by rapid fluctuations of the jet velocity. The resulting spectral energy distribution (SED) and variability properties are very sensitive to the Fourier power spectrum density (PSD) of the assumed fluctuations of the jet Lorentz factor. These fluctuations are likely to be triggered by the variability of the accretion flow which is best traced by the X-ray emission. Taking the PSD of the jet Lorentz factor fluctuations to be identical to the observed X-ray PSD, our study finds that the internal shock model successfully reproduces the radio to infrared SED of the source at the time of the observations as well as the reported strong mid-infrared spectral variability.

The nature of black hole jets at the lowest detectable luminosities remains an open question, largely due to a dearth of observational constraints. Here, we present a new, nearly-simultaneous broadband spectrum of the black hole X-ray binary (BHXB) XTE J1118+480 at an extremely low Eddington ratio (L_x~1e-8.5 L_Edd). Our new spectral energy distribution (SED) includes the radio, near-infrared, optical, ultraviolet, and X-ray wavebands. XTE J1118 is now the second BHXB at such a low Eddington ratio with a well-sampled SED, providing new constraints on highly sub-Eddington accretion flows and jets, and opening the door for comparison studies. We apply a multi-zone jet model to the new broadband SED, and we compare our results to previous fits to the same source using the same model at 4-5 decades higher luminosity. We find that after a BHXB transitions to the so-called quiescent spectral state, the jet base becomes more compact (by up to an order of magnitude) and slightly cooler (by at least a factor of two). Our preferred model fit indicates that jet particle acceleration is weaker after the transition into quiescence. That is, accelerated non-thermal particles no longer reach high enough Lorentz factors to contribute significant amounts of synchrotron X-ray emission. Instead, the X-ray waveband is dominated by synchrotron self-Compton emission from a population of mildly relativistic electrons with a quasi-thermal velocity distribution associated with the jet base. The corresponding (thermal) synchrotron component emits primarily in the infrared through ultraviolet wavebands. Our results on XTE J1118 are consistent with broadband modeling for A0620-00 and for Sgr A*. The above could therefore represent a canonical baseline geometry for accreting black holes in quiescence. We conclude with suggestions for future studies to further investigate the above scenario.

We present the first spectral energy distributions produced self-consistently by 2.5D general relativistic magneto-hydrodynamical (GRMHD) numerical simulations, where radiative cooling is included in the dynamical calculation. As a case study, we focus on the accretion flow around the supermassive black hole in the Galactic Centre, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), which has the best constrained physical parameters. We compare the simulated spectra to the observational data of Sgr A* and explore the parameter space of our model to determine the effect of changing the initial magnetic field configuration, ion to electron temperature ratio T_i/T_e and the target accretion rate. We find the best description of the data for a mass accretion rate of ~ 1e-9 Msun/yr, and rapid spin (0.7 < a_* < 0.9). The submillimeter peak flux seems largely independent of initial conditions, while the higher energies can be very sensitive to the initial magnetic field configuration. Finally, we also discuss flaring features observed in some simulations, that may be due to artifacts of the 2D configuration.

We present general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) numerical simulations of the accretion flow around the supermassive black hole in the Galactic centre, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*). The simulations include for the first time radiative cooling processes (synchrotron, bremsstrahlung, and inverse Compton) self-consistently in the dynamics, allowing us to test the common simplification of ignoring all cooling losses in the modeling of Sgr A*. We confirm that for Sgr A*, neglecting the cooling losses is a reasonable approximation if the Galactic centre is accreting below ~10^{-8} Msun/yr i.e. Mdot < 10^{-7} Mdot_Edd. But above this limit, we show that radiative losses should be taken into account as significant differences appear in the dynamics and the resulting spectra when comparing simulations with and without cooling. This limit implies that most nearby low-luminosity active galactic nuclei are in the regime where cooling should be taken into account.
We further make a parameter study of axisymmetric gas accretion around the supermassive black hole at the Galactic centre. This approach allows us to investigate the physics of gas accretion in general, while confronting our results with the well studied and observed source, Sgr A*, as a test case. We confirm that the nature of the accretion flow and outflow is strongly dependent on the initial geometry of the magnetic field. For example, we find it difficult, even with very high spins, to generate powerful outflows from discs threaded with multiple, separate poloidal field loops.

In a recent paper, Lagarias and Soundararajan study the y-smooth solutions to the equation a+b=c. Under the Generalised Riemann Hypothesis, they obtain an estimate for the number of those solutions weighted by a compactly supported smooth function, as well as a lower bound for the number of bounded unweighted solutions. In this paper, we aim to prove a more precise estimate for the number of weighted solutions that is valid when y is relatively large with respect to x, so as to connect our estimate with the one obtained by La Bretèche and Granville in a recent work. We also prove the conjectured upper bound for the number of bounded unweighted solutions, thus obtaining its exact asymptotic behaviour.
