In-context learning, where pre-trained language models learn to perform tasks from task examples and instructions in their contexts, has attracted much attention in the NLP community. However, the ability of in-context learning is not fully exploited because language models are not explicitly trained to learn in context. To this end, we propose PICL (Pre-training for In-Context Learning), a framework to enhance the language models' in-context learning ability by pre-training the model on a large collection of "intrinsic tasks" in the general plain-text corpus using the simple language modeling objective. PICL encourages the model to infer and perform tasks by conditioning on the contexts while maintaining task generalization of pre-trained models. We evaluate the in-context learning performance of the model trained with PICL on seven widely-used text classification datasets and the Super-NaturalInstrctions benchmark, which contains 100+ NLP tasks formulated to text generation. Our experiments show that PICL is more effective and task-generalizable than a range of baselines, outperforming larger language models with nearly 4x parameters. The code is publicly available at https://github.com/thu-coai/PICL.

These results offer a direct probe of baryon number violating interactions involving a strange quark.

The $C\!P$-odd weak decay parameters of the decays $Σ^{+} \to n π^{+}$ ($α_{+}$) and $\barΣ^{-} \to \bar{n} π^{-}$ ($\barα_{-}$) are determined to be $-0.0565\pm0.0047_{\rm stat}\pm0.0022_{\rm syst}$ and $0.0481\pm0.0031_{\rm

The simultaneously determined decay parameters allow the first precision $C\!P$ symmetry test for any hyperon decay with a neutron in the final state with the measurement of $A_{C\!P}=(α_{+}+\barα_{-})/(α_{+}-\barα_{-})=-0.080\pm0.052_{\rm

As an A-site-vacant perovskite-type oxide, ReO3 undergoes sequential pressure-driven structural transitions associated with the rotation of ReO6 octahedra. The rhombohedral-I phase stable in the pressure range of 12-38 GPa is featured by a lattice of nearly close-packed oxygen layers intercalated with Re cations, in reminiscent of the recently discovered superhydride superconductors. A combined study of first-principles calculations and transport measurements under high pressures enabled us to discover superconductivity in the rhombohedral-I phase showing a dome-shaped Tc(P) with a maximum Tc of 17 K at about 30 GPa. In addition to the enhanced density of states at the Fermi level compared to that of the ambient phase, the low-frequency vibrations of hexagonal-close-packed oxygen lattice significantly strengthen the electron-phonon coupling, which is responsible for observed superconductivity with a relatively high Tc. The present work thus establishes a rare case among oxide superconductors that the light-element oxygen lattice plays a crucial role in inducing superconductivity.

Plasmonic microbubbles produced by laser irradiated gold nanoparticles (GNPs) in various liquids have emerged in numerous innovative applications. The nucleation of these bubbles inherently involves rich phenomena. In this paper, we systematically investigate the physicochemical hydrodynamics of plasmonic bubbles upon irradiation of a continuous wave (CW) laser on a GNP decorated sample surface in ferric nitrate solution. Surprisingly, we observe the direct formation of well-defined micro-domes on the sample surface. It reveals that the nucleation of a plasmonic bubble is associated with the solvothermal decomposition of ferric nitrate in the solution. The plasmonic bubble acts as a template for the deposition of iron oxide nanoparticles. It first forms a rim, then a micro-shell, which eventually becomes a solid micro-dome. Experimental results show that the micro-dome radius Rd exhibits an obvious dependence on time t, which can be well interpreted theoretically. Our findings reveal the rich phenomena associated with plasmonic bubble nucleation in a thermally decomposable solution, paving a plasmonic bubble-based approach to fabricate three dimensional microstructures by using an ordinary CW laser.

The STCF will produce a data sample about a factor of 100 larger than that by the present $τ$-Charm factory -- the BEPCII, providing a unique platform for exploring the asymmetry of matter-antimatter (charge-parity violation), in-depth studies of the internal structure of hadrons and the nature of non-perturbative strong interactions, as well as searching for exotic hadrons and physics beyond the Standard Model. The STCF project in China is under development with an extensive R\&D program. This document presents the physics opportunities at the STCF, describes conceptual designs of the STCF detector system, and discusses future plans for detector R\&D and physics case studies.

Using $e^+e^-$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.33 ${\rm fb^{-1}}$ recorded by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226 ${\rm GeV}$, we present an analysis of the decay $D_{s}^{+} \to f_{0}(980)e^{+}ν_{e}$ with $f_{0}(980) \to π^{+}π^{-}$, where the $D_s^+$ is produced via the process $e^+e^- \to D_{s}^{*\pm}D_{s}^{\mp}$. We observe the $f_{0}(980)$ in the $π^+π^-$ system and the branching fraction of the decay $D_{s}^{+} \to f_{0}(980)e^{+}ν_{e}$ with $f_0(980)\toπ^+π^-$ is measured to be $(1.72 \pm 0.13_{\rm stat} \pm 0.10_{\rm syst}) \times10^{-3}$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The dynamics of the $D_{s}^{+} \to f_{0}(980)e^{+}ν_{e}$ decay are studied with the simple pole parameterization of the hadronic form factor and the Flatté formula describing the $f_0(980)$ in the differential decay rate, and the product of the form factor $f^{f_0}_{+}(0)$ and the $c\to s$ Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cs}|$ is determined for the first time to be $f^{f_0}_+(0)|V_{cs}|=0.504\pm0.017_{\rm stat}\pm0.035_{\rm syst}$.

The branching fraction of $D_s^+\to τ^+ν_τ$ is determined to be $(5.44\pm0.17_{\rm stat}\pm0.13_{\rm syst})\%$. The product of the $D_s^+$ decay constant $f_{D_s^+}$ and the CKM matrix element $|V_{cs}|$ is $f_{D_s^+}|V_{cs}| = (248.3\pm3.9_{\rm stat}\pm3.1_{\rm syst}\pm1.0_{\rm input})~\mathrm{MeV}$. Combining with the $|V_{cs}|$ value obtained from the Standard Model global fit or the $f_{D_s^+}$ from the lattice quantum chromodynamics, we determine $|V_{cs}| = 0.993\pm0.015_{\rm stat}\pm0.012_{\rm syst}\pm0.004_{\rm input}$ and $f_{D_s^+} = (255.0\pm4.0_{\rm stat}\pm3.2_{\rm syst}\pm1.0_{\rm input})~\text{MeV}$. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second one is systematic and the third one is due to the input parameters, mainly the lifetime of $D_s^+$. All results obtained in this work supersede the BESIII previous results based on 6.32 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data taken at center-of-mass energies between $4.178$ and $4.226$~GeV.

Combining this branching fraction with the world averages of the measurements of the masses of $τ^+$ and $D_s^+$ as well as the lifetime of $D_s^+$, we extract the product of the decay constant of $D_s^+$ and the $c\to s$ Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element to be $f_{D_s^+}|V_{cs}|=(246.2\pm3.7_{\rm stat}\pm2.5_{\rm syst})~\mathrm{MeV}$. Taking $|V_{cs}|$ from a global fit in the standard model we obtain $f_{D_s^+}=(252.7\pm3.8_{\rm stat}\pm2.6_{\rm syst})$ MeV. Conversely, taking $f_{D_s^+}$ from lattice quantum chromodynamics calculations, we obtain $|V_{cs}| = 0.984\pm0.015_{\rm stat}\pm0.010_{\rm syst}$.

Laser triggered and photothermally induced vapor bubbles have emerged as promising approaches to facilitate optomechanical energy conversion for numerous relevant applications in micro/nanofluidics. Here we report the observation of a sub-megahertz spontaneous nucleation of explosive plasmonic bubbles, triggered by a continuous wave laser. The periodic nucleation is found to be a result of the competition of Kelvin impulsive forces and thermal Marangoni forces applied on residual bubbles after collapse. The former originates from asymmetric bubble collapse, resulting in the directed locomotion of residual bubbles away from the laser spot. The latter arises in a laser irradiation induced heat affected zone (HAZ). When the Kelvin impulses dominates, residual bubbles move out of the HAZ and the periodic bubble nucleation occurs, with terminated subsequent steadily growing phases. We experimentally and numerically study the dependence of the nucleation frequency f on laser power and laser spot size. Moreover, we show that strong fluid flows over 10 mm/s in a millimeter range is steadily achievable by the periodically nucleated bubbles. Overall, our observation highlights the opportunities of remotely realizing strong localized flows, paving a way to achieve efficient micro/nanofluidic operations.

Large vision Transformers (ViTs) driven by self-supervised pre-training mechanisms achieved unprecedented progress. Lightweight ViT models limited by the model capacity, however, benefit little from those pre-training mechanisms. Knowledge distillation defines a paradigm to transfer representations from large (teacher) models to small (student) ones. However, the conventional single-stage distillation easily gets stuck on task-specific transfer, failing to retain the task-agnostic knowledge crucial for model generalization. In this study, we propose generic-to-specific distillation (G2SD), to tap the potential of small ViT models under the supervision of large models pre-trained by masked autoencoders. In generic distillation, decoder of the small model is encouraged to align feature predictions with hidden representations of the large model, so that task-agnostic knowledge can be transferred. In specific distillation, predictions of the small model are constrained to be consistent with those of the large model, to transfer task-specific features which guarantee task performance. With G2SD, the vanilla ViT-Small model respectively achieves 98.7%, 98.1% and 99.3% the performance of its teacher (ViT-Base) for image classification, object detection, and semantic segmentation, setting a solid baseline for two-stage vision distillation. Code will be available at https://github.com/pengzhiliang/G2SD.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are recognized with great potential to strengthen wireless security, yet the performance gain largely depends on the deployment location of RISs in the network topology. In this paper, we consider the anti-eavesdrop** communication established through a RIS at a fixed location, as well as an aerial platform mounting another RIS and a friendly jammer to further improve the secrecy. The aerial RIS helps enhance the legitimate signal and the aerial cooperative jamming is strengthened through the fixed RIS. The security gain with aerial reflection and jamming is further improved with the optimized deployment of the aerial platform. We particularly consider the imperfect channel state information issue and address the worst-case secrecy for robust performance. The formulated robust secrecy rate maximization problem is decomposed into two layers, where the inner layer solves for reflection and jamming with robust optimization, and the outer layer tackles the aerial deployment through deep reinforcement learning. Simulation results show the deployment under different network topologies and demonstrate the performance superiority of our proposal in terms of the worst-case security provisioning as compared with the baselines.

A big convergence of language, multimodal perception, action, and world modeling is a key step toward artificial general intelligence. In this work, we introduce Kosmos-1, a Multimodal Large Language Model (MLLM) that can perceive general modalities, learn in context (i.e., few-shot), and follow instructions (i.e., zero-shot). Specifically, we train Kosmos-1 from scratch on web-scale multimodal corpora, including arbitrarily interleaved text and images, image-caption pairs, and text data. We evaluate various settings, including zero-shot, few-shot, and multimodal chain-of-thought prompting, on a wide range of tasks without any gradient updates or finetuning. Experimental results show that Kosmos-1 achieves impressive performance on (i) language understanding, generation, and even OCR-free NLP (directly fed with document images), (ii) perception-language tasks, including multimodal dialogue, image captioning, visual question answering, and (iii) vision tasks, such as image recognition with descriptions (specifying classification via text instructions). We also show that MLLMs can benefit from cross-modal transfer, i.e., transfer knowledge from language to multimodal, and from multimodal to language. In addition, we introduce a dataset of Raven IQ test, which diagnoses the nonverbal reasoning capability of MLLMs.

The decay parameters of the $Ξ^0$ hyperon $(α_{Ξ^0}, α_{\barΞ^0}, φ_{Ξ^0}, φ_{\barΞ^0})$ and the angular distribution parameter $(α_{ψ(3686)})$ and $ΔΦ$ are measured simultaneously for the first time. In addition, the $CP$ asymmetry observables are determined to be $A^{Ξ^0}_{CP} = (α_{Ξ^0} + α_{\barΞ^0})/(α_{Ξ^0} -
α_{\barΞ^0})$ $= -0.007$ $\pm$ 0.082 $\pm$ 0.025 and $Δφ^{Ξ^0}_{CP} = (φ_{Ξ^0} + φ_{\barΞ^0})/2$ $= -0.079$ $\pm$ 0.082 $\pm$ 0.010 rad, which are consistent with $CP$ conservation.

The matrix elements for both channels are in reasonable agreement with previous measurements. The non-zero $gX^2Y$ term for the decay mode $η\toπ^+π^-π^0$ is confirmed, as reported by the KLOE Collaboration, while the other higher-order terms are found to be insignificant. Dalitz plot asymmetries in the $η\toπ^+π^-π^0$ decay are also explored and are found to be consistent with charge conjugation invariance. In addition, a cusp effect is investigated in the $η\toπ^0π^0π^0$ decay, and no obvious structure around the $π^+π^-$ mass threshold is observed.

Background: Software Process Simulation (SPS) has become an effective tool for software process management and improvement. However, its adoption in industry is less than what the research community expected due to the burden of measurement cost and the high demand for domain knowledge. The difficulty of extracting appropriate metrics with real data from process enactment is one of the great challenges. Objective: We aim to provide evidence-based support of the process metrics for software process (simulation) modeling. Method: A systematic literature review was performed by extending our previous review series to draw a comprehensive understanding of the metrics for process modeling following a meta-model of ontology of metrics in SPS. Results: We identified 145 process modeling studies that collectively involve 2130 metrics and classified them using the coding technique. Two diagrams which illustrate the high frequency causal relationships used between metrics are proposed in terms of two hierarchical levels of modeling purposes. We revisited the data issues encountered in SPS data preparing phases, as well as identified the corresponding strategies. Conclusion: The results of this study provide process modelers with an evidence-based reference of the identification and the use of metrics in SPS modeling, and further contribute to the development of the body of knowledge on software metrics in the context of process modeling. Furthermore, this study is not limited to process simulation but can be extended to software process modeling, in general. Taking simulation metrics as standards and references can further motivate and guide software developers to improve the collection, governance, and application of process data in practice.

Semi-supervised learning frameworks usually adopt mutual learning approaches with multiple submodels to learn from different perspectives. To avoid transferring erroneous pseudo labels between these submodels, a high threshold is usually used to filter out a large number of low-confidence predictions for unlabeled data. However, such filtering can not fully exploit unlabeled data with low prediction confidence. To overcome this problem, in this work, we propose a mutual learning framework based on pseudo-negative labels. Negative labels are those that a corresponding data item does not belong. In each iteration, one submodel generates pseudo-negative labels for each data item, and the other submodel learns from these labels. The role of the two submodels exchanges after each iteration until convergence. By reducing the prediction probability on pseudo-negative labels, the dual model can improve its prediction ability. We also propose a mechanism to select a few pseudo-negative labels to feed into submodels. In the experiments, our framework achieves state-of-the-art results on several main benchmarks. Specifically, with our framework, the error rates of the 13-layer CNN model are 9.35% and 7.94% for CIFAR-10 with 1000 and 4000 labels, respectively. In addition, for the non-augmented MNIST with only 20 labels, the error rate is 0.81% by our framework, which is much smaller than that of other approaches. Our approach also demonstrates a significant performance improvement in domain adaptation.

Inductive reasoning is a core component of human intelligence. In the past research of inductive reasoning within computer science, formal language is used as representations of knowledge (facts and rules, more specifically). However, formal language can cause systematic problems for inductive reasoning such as disability of handling raw input such as natural language, sensitiveness to mislabeled data, and incapacity to handle ambiguous input. To this end, we propose a new paradigm (task) for inductive reasoning, which is to induce natural language rules from natural language facts, and create a dataset termed DEER containing 1.2k rule-fact pairs for the task, where rules and facts are written in natural language. New automatic metrics are also proposed and analysed for the evaluation of this task. With DEER, we investigate a modern approach for inductive reasoning where we use natural language as representation for knowledge instead of formal language and use pretrained language models as ''reasoners''. Moreover, we provide the first and comprehensive analysis of how well pretrained language models can induce natural language rules from natural language facts. We also propose a new framework drawing insights from philosophy literature for this task, which we show in the experiment section that surpasses baselines in both automatic and human evaluations. We discuss about our future perspectives for inductive reasoning in Section 7. Dataset and code are available at https://github.com/ZonglinY/Inductive_Reasoning.

Large pretrained language models have shown surprising in-context learning (ICL) ability. With a few demonstration input-label pairs, they can predict the label for an unseen input without parameter updates. Despite the great success in performance, its working mechanism still remains an open question. In this paper, we explain language models as meta-optimizers and understand in-context learning as implicit finetuning. Theoretically, we figure out that Transformer attention has a dual form of gradient descent. On top of it, we understand ICL as follows: GPT first produces meta-gradients according to the demonstration examples, and then these meta-gradients are applied to the original GPT to build an ICL model. We comprehensively compare the behaviors of in-context learning and explicit finetuning on real tasks to provide empirical evidence that supports our understanding. Experimental results show that in-context learning behaves similarly to explicit finetuning from multiple perspectives. Inspired by the dual form between Transformer attention and gradient descent, we design a momentum-based attention by analogy with gradient descent with momentum. The improved performance over vanilla attention further supports our understanding from another perspective, and more importantly, shows the potential to utilize our understanding for future model design. The code is available at \url{https://aka.ms/icl}.

We define attention resolution as an indicator of extrapolation. Then we propose two designs to improve the above metric of Transformers. Specifically, we introduce a relative position embedding to explicitly maximize attention resolution. Moreover, we use blockwise causal attention during inference for better resolution. We evaluate different Transformer variants with language modeling. Experimental results show that our model achieves strong performance in both interpolation and extrapolation settings. Pre-trained models have achieved remarkable success in natural language processing (NLP). However, existing pre-training methods underutilize the benefits of language understanding for generation. Inspired by the idea of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), we propose a GAN-style model for encoder-decoder pre-training by introducing an auxiliary discriminator, unifying the ability of language understanding and generation in a single model. Our model, named as GanLM, is trained with two pre-training objectives: replaced token detection and replaced token denoising. Specifically, given masked source sentences, the generator outputs the target distribution and the discriminator predicts whether the target sampled tokens from distribution are incorrect. The target sentence is replaced with misclassified tokens to construct noisy previous context, which is used to generate the gold sentence. In general, both tasks improve the ability of language understanding and generation by selectively using the denoising data. Extensive experiments in language generation benchmarks show that GanLM with the powerful language understanding capability outperforms various strong pre-trained language models (PLMs) and achieves state-of-the-art performance.

Well-designed prompts can guide text-to-image models to generate amazing images. However, the performant prompts are often model-specific and misaligned with user input. Instead of laborious human engineering, we propose prompt adaptation, a general framework that automatically adapts original user input to model-preferred prompts. Specifically, we first perform supervised fine-tuning with a pretrained language model on a small collection of manually engineered prompts. Then we use reinforcement learning to explore better prompts. We define a reward function that encourages the policy to generate more aesthetically pleasing images while preserving the original user intentions. Experimental results on Stable Diffusion show that our method outperforms manual prompt engineering in terms of both automatic metrics and human preference ratings. Moreover, reinforcement learning further boosts performance, especially on out-of-domain prompts. The pretrained checkpoints are available at https://aka.ms/promptist. The demo can be found at https://aka.ms/promptist-demo.

We present a study of the resonant structure of the decay $D^0 \to K_{\rm L}^0π^+π^-$, using quantum-correlated $D^0\bar{D}^0$ data produced at $\sqrt{s}=3.773$ GeV. The data sample was collected by the BESIII experiment and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $2.93$ fb$^{-1}$. This study is the first amplitude analysis of a decay mode involving a $K_{\rm L}^0$, which also results in the first measurement of the complex $\textit{U-spin breaking parameters}$ ($\hatρ$) related to various $\mathit{CP}$-eigenstate resonant modes through which the three-body decay proceeds. The moduli of the $\hatρ$ parameters have central values in a wide range from $0.4$ to $12.1$, which indicates substantial U-spin symmetry breaking. We present the fractional resonant contributions and average strong-phase parameters over regions of phase space for both $K_{\rm S}^0π^+π^-$ and $K_{\rm L}^0π^+π^-$ modes. We also report the ratio of the branching fractions between $K_{\rm L}^0π^+π^-$ and $K_{\rm S}^0π^+π^-$ decay modes and the $\mathit{CP}$-even fraction of the $K_{\rm L}^0π^+π^-$ state calculated using the U-spin breaking parameters.

We calculate the complete two-loop QCD amplitudes for hadronic $tW$ production by combining analytical and numerical techniques. The amplitudes have been first reduced to master integrals of eight planar and seven non-planar families, which can contain at most four massive propagators. Then a rational transformation of the master integrals is found to obtain a good basis so that the dimensional parameter decouples from the kinematic variables in the denominators of reduction coefficients. The master integrals are computed by solving their differential equations numerically. We find that the finite part of the two-loop squared amplitude is stable in the bulk of the phase space. After phase space integration and convolution with the parton distributions, it increases the LO cross section by about $3\%$.

We present the first measurements of the electric and magnetic form factors of the neutron in the time-like (positive $q^2$) region as function of four-momentum transfer. We explored the differential cross sections of the reaction $e^+e^- \rightarrow \bar{n}n$ with data collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII accelerator, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 354.6 pb$^{-1}$ in total at twelve center-of-mass energies between $\sqrt{s} = 2.0 - 2.95$ GeV. A relative uncertainty of 18% and 12% for the electric and magnetic form factors, respectively, is achieved at $\sqrt{s} = 2.3935$ GeV. Our results are comparable in accuracy to those from electron scattering in the comparable space-like (negative $q^2$) region of four-momentum transfer. The electromagnetic form factor ratio $R_{\rm em}\equiv |G_E|/|G_M|$ is within the uncertainties close to unity. We compare our result on $|G_E|$ and $|G_M|$ to recent model predictions, and the measurements in the space-like region to test the analyticity of electromagnetic form factors.

Large language models have exhibited intriguing in-context learning capability, achieving promising zero- and few-shot performance without updating the parameters. However, conventional in-context learning is usually restricted by length constraints, rendering it ineffective to absorb supervision from a large number of examples. In order to go beyond few shots, we introduce structured prompting that breaks the length limit and scales in-context learning to thousands of examples. Specifically, demonstration examples are separately encoded with well-designed position embeddings, and then they are jointly attended by the test example using a rescaled attention mechanism. So we can scale the number of exemplars with linear complexity instead of quadratic complexity with respect to length. Experimental results on a diverse set of tasks show that our approach improves end-task performance and reduces evaluation variance over conventional in-context learning as the number of demonstration examples increases.
