Abstract:
We use a combination of transmission electron microscopy, X-Ray and neutron diffraction, SQUID magnetometry and symmetry analysis to determine the nuclear and magnetic structure of an epitaxial LSMO film, deposited on a Si substrate. The film undergoes a magnetic ordering transition at 260K. At 300K, in the paramagnetic phase, the manganite film has a $I4/m$ space group. In the magnetic phase, SQU…

In the magnetic phase, SQUID and neutron diffraction results lead us to assign a ferromagnetic spin-order to the film, associated to magnetic moments with a slightly out-of-plane component, namely $(3.5, 0, 0.3)\,μ_B$. Symmetry analysis further shows that only the $P\bar 1'$ group is compatible with such a magnetic ordering.

Transition-metal oxides with an ABO$_3$ perovskite structure exhibit strongly entangled structural and electronic degrees of freedom and thus, one expects to unveil exotic phases and properties by acting on the lattice through various external stimuli. Using the Jahn-Teller active praseodymium vanadate Pr$^{3+}$V$^{3+}$O$_3$ compound as a model system, we show that PrVO$_3$ Néel temperature T$_N$ can be raised by 40 K with respect to the bulk when grown as thin films. Using advanced experimental techniques, this enhancement is unambiguously ascribed to a tetragonality resulting from the epitaxial compressive strain experienced by the films. First-principles simulations not only confirm experimental results, but they also reveal that the strain promotes an unprecedented orbital-ordering of the V$^{3+}$ d electrons, strongly favouring antiferromagnetic interactions. These results show that an accurate control of structural aspects is the key for unveiling unexpected phases in oxides.

We report measurements and analysis of the voltage noise due the to vortex motion, performed in superconducting Niobium micro-bridges. Noise in such small systems exhibits important changes from the behavior commonly reported in macroscopic samples. In the low biasing current regime, the voltage fluctuations are shown to deviate substantially from the Gaussian behavior which is systematically observed at higher currents in the so called flux-flow regime. The responsibility of the spatial inhomogeneities of the critical current in this deviation from Gaussian behavior is emphasized. We also report on the first investigation of the effect of an artificial pinning array on the voltage noise statistics. It is shown that the fluctuations can lose their stationarity, and exhibit a Levy flight-like behavior.

The transport critical current of a Niobium (Nb) thick film has been measured for a large range of magnetic field. Its value and variation are quantitatively described in the framework of the pinning of vortices due to boundary conditions at the rough surface, with a contact angle well explained by the spectral analysis of the surface roughness. Increasing the surface roughness using a Focused Ion Beam results also in an increase of the superficial critical current.
