One of the features of the unconventional $s_\pm$ state in iron-based superconductors is possibility to transform to the $s_{++}$ state with the increase of the nonmagnetic disorder. Detection of such a transition would prove the existence of the $s_\pm$ state. Here we study the temperature dependence of the London magnetic penetration depth within the two-band model for the $s_\pm$ and $s_{++}$ superconductors. By solving Eliashberg equations accounting for the spin-fluctuation mediated pairing and nonmagnetic impurities in the $T$-matrix approximation, we have derived a set of specific signatures of the $s_\pm \to s_{++}$ transition: (1) sharp change in the behavior of the penetration depth $λ_{L}$ as a function of the impurity scattering rate at low temperatures; (2) before the transition, the slope of $Δλ_{L}(T) = λ_{L}(T)-λ_{L}(0)$ increases as a function of temperature, and after the transition this value decreases; (3) the sharp jump in the inverse square of the penetration depth as a function of the impurity scattering rate, $λ_{L}^{-2}(Γ_a)$, at the transition; (4) change from the single-gap behavior in the vicinity of the transition to the two-gap behavior upon increase of the impurity scattering rate in the superfluid density $ρ_{s}(T)$.

We study the dependence of the superconducting gaps on both the disorder and the temperature within the two-band model for iron-based materials. In the clean limit, the system is in the $s_\pm$ state with the sign-changing gaps. Scattering by nonmagnetic impurities leads to the change of sign of the smaller gap thus resulting in a transition from the $s_{\pm}$ to the $s_{++}$ state with the sign-preserving gaps. We show here that the transition is temperature-dependent, thus, there is a line of $s_\pm \to s_{++}$ transition in the temperature-disorder phase diagram. There exists a narrow range of impurity scattering rates, where the disorder-induced $s_\pm \to s_{++}$ transition occurs at low temperatures, but then the low-temperature $s_{++}$ state transforms back to the $s_\pm$ state at higher temperatures. With increasing impurity scattering rate, temperature of such $s_{++} \to s_{\pm}$ transition shifts to the critical temperature $T_c$ and only the $s_{++}$ state is left for higher amount of disorder.

Irradiation of superconductors with different particles is one of many ways to investigate effects of disorder. Here we study the disorder-induced transition between $s_\pm$ and $s_{++}$ states in two-band model for Fe-based superconductors with nonmagnetic impurities. Specifically, the important question of whether the superconducting gaps during the transition change smoothly or steeply? We show that the behavior can be of either type and is controlled by the ratio of intra- and interband impurity scattering and a parameter $σ$ that represents a scattering strength and changes from zero (Born approximation) to one (unitary limit). For the pure interband scattering potential and $σ\lesssim 0.11$, the $s_\pm \to s_{++}$ transition is accompanied by the steep behavior of gaps, while for larger values of $σ$, gaps change smoothly. The steep behavior of the gaps occurs at low temperatures, $T < 0.1 T_{c0}$, otherwise it is smooth. The critical temperature $T_c$ is always a smooth function of the scattering rate in spite of the steep changes in the behavior of the gaps.

We develop a theory of the quasiparticle interference (QPI) in multiband superconductors based on strong-coupling Eliashberg approach within the Born approximation. In the framework of this theory, we study dependencies of the QPI response function in the multiband superconductors with nodeless s-wave superconductive order parameter. We pay a special attention to the difference of the quasiparticle scattering between the bands having the same and opposite signs of the order parameter. We show that, at the momentum values close to the momentum transfer between two bands, the energy dependence of the quasiparticle interference response function has three singularities. Two of these correspond to the values of the gap functions and the third one depends on both the gaps and the transfer momentum. We argue that only the singularity near the smallest band gap may be used as an universal tool to distinguish between $s_{++}$ and $s_{\pm}$ order parameters. The robustness of the sign of the response function peak near the smaller gap value, irrespective of the change in parameters, in both the symmetry cases is a promising feature that can be harnessed experimentally.

The theory of EPI with strong forward scattering peak (FSP)[1-3] is recently applied in [4-5] in studying high Tc(~100 K) in a FeSe grown on SrTiO3 [4] and TiO2 [6]. The EPI is due to a long-range dipolar electric field created by the high-energy oxygen vibrations (E0~90 meV) at the interface [4-5]. Besides obtaining new results we also correct some misleading results from the recent literature. We show that the mean-field critical temperature Tc0 is an interplay between the maximal pairing potential and the FSP-width qc. For Tc0~100 K the gap (G) is G~16 meV in agreement with ARPES experiments. We find that in leading order Tc0 is mass-independent and there is small oxygen isotope effect in next to leading order. In clean systems Tc0 for s-wave and d-wave pairing is degenerate but both are affected by non-magnetic impurities. The non-magnetic impurities are pair-weakening in the s-channel and pair-breaking in the d-channel. The normal state self-energy at the Fermi surface gives rise to the ARPES quasiparticle band at E=0 and to a replica band at Er=-E0(1+l(m))^1/2, respectively. The EPI coupling l(m), which enters the self-energy, is mass-dependent - the fact overlooked in the literature, makes at low energies the slope of the self-energy mass-dependent. The smallness of the oxygen isotope effect in Tc0 and its presence in the self-energy in FeSe films on SrTiO3 and TiO2 is a smoking-gun experiment for the application of the EPI-FSP theory to these systems. The EPI-FSP theory predicts a large number of low-laying pairing states (above the ground state) thus causing internal pair fluctuations. The latter reduce Tc0 additionally, by creating a pseudogap state for Tc<T<Tc0. Possibilities to increase Tc0 by designing novel structures are discussed in the framework of the EPI-FSP theory.

We analyze how the magnetic disorder affects the properties of the two-band $s_\pm$ and $s_{++}$ models, which are subject of hot discussions regarding iron-based superconductors and other multiband systems like MgB$_2$. We show that there are several cases when the transition temperature $T_c$ is not fully suppressed by magnetic impurities in contrast to the Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory, but a saturation of $T_c$ takes place in the regime of strong disorder. These cases are: (1) the purely interband impurity scattering, (2) the unitary scattering limit. We show that in the former case the $s_\pm$ gap is preserved, while the $s_{++}$ state transforms into the $s_\pm$ state with increasing magnetic disorder. For the case (2), the gap structure remains intact.

We find a disorder-induced transition from the s_{\pm} state to a gapless and then to a fully gapped s_{++} state, controlled by a single parameter -- the sign of the average coupling constant <λ> . We show that the magnetism enhances the total electron-phonon coupling by $\sim 50%$, up to $λ\lesssim 0.35$, still not enough to explain the high critical temperature, but strong enough to have a non-negligible effect on superconductivity, for instance, by frustrating the coupling with spin fluctuations and inducing order parameter nodes. The enhancement comes mostly from a renormalization of the electron-phonon matrix elements. We also investigate, in the rigid band approximation, the effect of do**, and find that $λ$ versus do** does not mirror the behavior of the density of states; while the latter decreases upon electron do**, the former does not, and even increases slightly.

In Part I we discuss accumulating experimental evidence related to the structure and origin of the bosonic spectral function in high-temperature superconducting (HTSC) cuprates at and near optimal do**. Some global properties of the spectral function, such as number and positions of peaks, are extracted by combining optics, neutron scattering, ARPES and tunnelling measurements. These methods give convincing evidence for strong electron-phonon interaction (EPI) with the coupling constant between 1-3 in cuprates near optimal do**. Here we clarify how these results are in favor of the Eliashberg-like theory for HTSC cuprates near optimal do**. In Part II we discuss some theoretical ingredients - such as strong EPI, strong correlations - which are necessary to explain the experimental results related to the mechanism of d-wave pairing in optimally doped cuprates. These comprise the Migdal-Eliashberg theory for EPI in strongly correlated systems which give rise to the forward scattering peak. The latter is further supported by the weakly screened Madelung interaction in the ionic-metallic structure of layered cuprates. In this approach EPI is responsible for the strength of pairing while the residual Coulomb interaction (by including spin fluctuations) triggers the d-wave pairing.

In this paper we discuss the normal and superconducting state properties of two pnictide superconductors, LaOFeAs and LaONiAs, using Migdal-Eliashberg theory and density functional perturbation theory. For pure LaOFeAs, the calculated electron-phonon coupling constant $λ=0.21$ and logarithmic-averaged frequency $ω_{ln}=206 K$, give a maximum $T_c$ of 0.8 K, using the standard Migdal-Eliashberg theory. Inclusion of multiband effects increases the Tc only marginally. To reproduce the experimental $T_c$, a 5-6 times larger coupling constant would be needed. Our results indicate that standard electron-phonon coupling is not sufficient to explain superconductivity in the whole family of Fe-As based superconductors. At the same time, the electron-phonon coupling in Ni-As based compounds is much stronger and its normal and superconducting state properties can be well described by standard Migdal-Eliashberg theory.

The theory of Andreev conductance is formulated for junctions involving normal metals (N) and multiband superconductors (S) and applied to the case of superconductors with nodeless extended $s_{\pm}$-wave order parameter symmetry, as possibly realized in the recently discovered ferro pnictides. We find qualitative differences from tunneling into s-wave or d-wave superconductors that may help to identify such a state. First, interband interference leads to a suppression of Andreev reflection in the case of a highly transparent N/S interface and to a current deficit in the tunneling regime. Second, surface bound states may appear, both at zero and at non-zero energies. These effects do not occur in multiband superconductors without interband sign reversal, though the interference can still strongly modify the conductance spectra.

The strength of the inter-band impurity scattering in some single crystals may be strong and probably beyond the Born scattering limit. In that case the proposed s(+-) pairing (hole(h)- and electron(el)-gaps are of opposite signs) is suppressed but possibly not completely destroyed. The data imply that the intra-band pairing in the h- and in the el-band, which are inevitably due to some nonmagnetic el-boson interaction (EBI), must be taken into account. EBI is either due to phonons (EPI) or possibly due to excitons (EEI), or both are simultaneously operative. We discuss their interplay briefly. The large Fe-isotope effect favors the EPI and the s(+) pairing (the h- and el-gaps are in-phase).

Some global properties of α^{2}F such as number and positions of peaks, are extracted by combining optics, neutron scattering, ARPES and tunnelling measurements. These methods give convincing evidence for strong electron-phonon interaction (EPI) with 1<λ\lesssim 3 in cuprates near optimal do**. Here we clarify how these results are in favor of the Eliashberg-like theory for HTSC cuprates near optimal do**.We argue that the neglect of EPI in some previous studies of HTSC was based on a number of deceptive prejudices related to the strength of EPI, on some physical misconceptions and misleading interpretation of experimental results.

The newly discovered iron pnictide superconductors apparently present an unusual case of interband-channel pairing superconductivity. Here we show that, in the limit where the pairing occurs within the interband channel, several surprising effects occur quite naturally and generally: different density-of-states on the two bands lead to several unusual properties, including a gap ratio which behaves inversely to the ratio of density-of-states; the weak-coupling limit of the Eliashberg and the BCS theory, commonly taken as equivalent, in fact predict qualitatively different dependence of the $Δ_{1}/Δ_{2}$ and $Δ/T_{c}$ ratios on coupling constants. We show analytically that these effects follow directly from the interband character of superconductivity. Our results show that in the interband-only pairing model the maximal gap ratio is $\sqrt{N_{2}/N_{1}}$ as strong-coupling effects act only to reduce this ratio. This suggests that if the large experimentally reported gap ratios (up to a factor 2) are correct, the pairing mechanism must include more intraband interaction than is usually assumed.

Recently, several measurements of the nuclear spin lattice relaxation rate $T_{1}^{-1}$ in the newly discovered superconducting Fe-pnictides have been reported. These measurements generally show no coherence peak below $T_{c}$ and indicate a low temperature power law behavior, the characteristics commonly taken as evidence of unconventional superconductivity with lines of nodes crossing the Fermi surface. In this work we show that (i) the lack of a coherence peak is fully consistent with the previously proposed nodeless extended $s_{\pm}$-wave symmetry of the order parameter (whether in the clean or dirty limit) and (ii) the low temperature power law behavior can be also explained in the framework of the same model, but requires going beyond the Born model.

For the $F-$doped compounds, we predict even smaller coupling constants, due to the strong suppression of the electronic Density of States at the Fermi level. To reproduce the experimental $T_c=26 K$, a 5-6 times larger coupling constant would be needed.
Our results indicate that electron-phonon coupling is not sufficient to explain superconductivity in the newly-discovered LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs superconductor, probably due to the importance of strong correlation effects.

The experimental data for $\func{Re}Σ(ω)$ up to energies $\sim 350$ $meV$ can be satisfactory explained by $% λ_{z}^{EP}\approx 2.1$ and $λ_{z}^{C}\approx 1.1$. Additionally the low energy slope of the ARPES $\func{Re}Σ(ω)$ at $ω<20$ $meV$ \cite{Valla-2006} gives a hint that the low energy phonons might contribute significantly to the EPI coupling, i.e. $λ_{z}^{low,EP}>1$, thus giving the total EPI coupling constant $λ_{z,tot}^{EP}=λ_{z}^{EP}+λ_{z}^{low,EP}>3$. In order to test the role of low frequency phonons by ARPES measurements a much better momentum resolution is needed than that reported in \cite{Valla-2006}. Possible pairing scenarios based on ARPES, tunnelling and magnetic neutron scattering measurements are discussed.

We emphasize that while the general picture of conventional, phonon-driven superconductivity has already emerged and is generally accepted, there are still interesting problems with this picture, such as weak-coupling regime inferred from specific heat suggesting coupling exclusively with high-energy carbon phonons coming in direct contradiction with the isotope effect measurements suggesting coupling exclusively with the low-energy intercalant modes. At the same time, the first principle calculations, while explaining Tc, contradict both of the experiments above by predicting equal coupling with both groups of phonons.

We reconsider the long-standing problem of the effect of spin fluctuations on the critical temperature and isotope effect in a phonon-mediated superconductor. Although the general physics of the interplay between phonons and paramagnons had been rather well understood, the existing approximate formulas fail to describe the correct behavior of $% T_{c}$ for general phonon and paramagnon spectra. Using a controllable approximation, we derive an analytical formula for $T_{c}$ which agrees well with exact numerical solutions of the Eliashberg equations for a broad range of parameters. Based on both numerical and analytical results, we predict a strong enhancement of the isotope effect when the frequencies of spin fluctuation and phonons are of the same order. This effect may have important consequences for near-magnetic superconductors such as MgCNi$_{3}$

Thermodynamic properties of the multiband superconductor MgB$_{2}$ have often been described using a simple sum of the standard BCS expressions corresponding to $σ$- and $π$-bands. Although, it is \textit{a priori} not clear if this approach is working always adequately, in particular in cases of strong interband scattering. Here we compare the often used approach of a sum of two independent bands using BCS-like $α$-model expressions for the specific heat, entropy and free energy to the solution of the full Eliashberg equations. The superconducting energy gaps, the free energy, the entropy and the heat capacity for varying interband scattering rates are calculated within the framework of two-band Eliashberg theory. We obtain good agreement between the phenomenological two-band $α$-model with the Eliashberg results, which delivers for the first time the theoretical verification to use the $α$-model as a useful tool for a reliable analysis of heat capacity data. For the thermodynamic potential and the entropy we demonstrate that only the sum over the contributions of the two bands has physical meaning.

The ARPES spectra in high-Tc superconductors show four distinctive features in the quasiparticle self-energy. All of them can be explained consistently by the theory in which the electron phonon interaction (EPI) with the forward scattering peak dominates over the Coulomb scattering. In particular, this theory explains why there is no shift of the nodal kink at 70 meV in the superconducting state, contrary to the clear shift of the anti-nodal singularity at 40 meV. The theory predicts a ``knee''-like structure of the imaginary part of the self-energy, which is phonon dominated for $ω\approx ω^{(70)}_{ph}$, and shows linear behavior for $ω> ω^{(70)}_{ph}$ - due to the Coulomb scattering. Recent ARPES spectra give that the EPI coupling constant is much larger than the Coulomb one. The dip-hump structure in the spectral function comes out naturally from the proposed theory.

The critical current density at different temperatures and magnetic fields was evaluated from magnetisation curves, the structure of superconducting order parameter was obtained from point-contact spectroscopy, and the scattering rates were evaluated by fitting the temperature dependent normal-state resistivity to the two-band model. The films have similar critical temperatures close to 39 K, but the upper critical fields were different by a factor of 2 (5.2T and 2.5 T at 20 K). We have found that the film with higher Hc2 also had stronger scattering in the sigma band and smaller value of the superconducting gap in this band. As the scattering in sigma band is primarily due to the defects in boron plane, our results are consistent with the assumption that disordering the boron planes leads to enhanced Hc2 and better pinning properties in magnetic field.

The fine structures produced by the two-band interaction at energies between 20 and 100 meV turn out to be clearly observable only for tunneling along the $ab$ planes, when the extracted $α^{2}F(ω)$ contains the combination $α^{2}F_{σσ}(ω)$\textbf{+}$α^{2}F_{σπ}(ω)$, together with a minor $α^{2}F_{ππ}(ω)$\textbf{+}$α^{2}F_{πσ} (ω)$ component. Only in this case it is possible to extract information on the $σ$-band contribution to the spectral functions. For any other tunneling direction, the $π$-band contribution (which does not determine the superconducting properties of MgB$_{2}$) is dominant and almost coincides with the whole $α^2F(ω)$ for tunneling along the c axis. Our results are compared with recent experimental tunneling and point-contact data.

Abstract:
Choi et al. [Phys. Rev. The interrelation between the condensation energy and the optical sum rules has been investigated. It has been shown that the so called 'partial' sum rule violation is related mainly to a temperature dependence of the relaxation rate rather than to the appearance of superconductivity itself. The interrelation between the condensation energy and the optical sum rules has been investigated. It has been shown that the so called 'partial' sum rule violation is related mainly to a temperature dependence of the relaxation rate rather than to the appearance of superconductivity itself. Moreover, we demonstrate that the experimental data on the temperature dependence of the optical sum rule can be explained rather well by an account of strong electron-phonon interaction.

A recent experiment by Shimizu et al. has provided evidence of a superconducting phase in hcp Fe under pressure. To study the pressure-dependence of this superconducting phase we have calculated the phonon frequencies and the electron-phonon coupling in hcp Fe as a function of the lattice parameter, using the linear response (LR) scheme and the full potential linear muffin-tin orbital (FP-LMTO) method. Calculated phonon spectra and the Eliashberg functions $α^2 F$ indicate that conventional s-wave electron-phonon coupling can definitely account for the appearance of the superconducting phase in hcp Fe. However, the observed change in the transition temperature with increasing pressure is far too rapid compared with the calculated results. For comparison with the linear response results, we have computed the electron-phonon coupling also by using the rigid muffin-tin (RMT) approximation. From both the LR and the RMT results it appears that electron-phonon interaction alone cannot explain the small range of volume over which superconductivity is observed. It is shown that ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations as well as scattering from magnetic impurities (spin-ordered clusters) can account for the observed values of the transition temperatures but cannot substantially improve the agreeemnt between the calculated and observed presure/volume range of the superconducting phase. A simplified treatment of p-wave pairing leads to extremely small ($\leq 10^{-2}$ K) transition temperatures. Thus our calculations seem to rule out both $s$- and $p$- wave superconductivity in hcp Fe.

A large number of experimental facts and theoretical arguments favor a two-gap model for superconductivity in MgB$_{2}$. However, this model predicts strong suppression of the critical temperature by interband impurity scattering and, presumably, a strong correlation between the critical temperature and the residual resistivity. However, this model predicts strong suppression of the critical temperature by interband impurity scattering and, presumably, a strong correlation between the critical temperature and the residual resistivity. No such correlation has been observed. We argue that this fact can be understood if the band disparity of the electronic structure is taken into account, not only in the superconducting state, but also in normal transport.

We solve the Eliashberg equations for both an isotropic one-band and a two-band model with different superconducting gaps on the $π$ and $σ$ Fermi surfaces. The agreement with experiments is considerably better for the two-band model than for the one-band model.
