Predators and altruists arriving on jammed Riviera
Abstract: The Riviera model is a combinatorial model for a settlement along a coastline, introduced recently by the authors. Of most interest are the so-called jammed states, where no more houses can be built without violating the condition that every house needs to have free space to at least one of its sides. In this paper, we introduce new agents (predators and altruists) that want to build houses once t… ▽ More

Solving the Mostar index inverse problem
Abstract: A nonnegative integer $p$ is realizable by a graph-theoretical invariant $I$ if there exist a graph $G$ such that $I(G) = p$. The inverse problem for $I$ consists of finding all nonnegative integers $p$ realizable by $I$. In this paper, we consider and solve the inverse problem for the Mostar index, a recently introduced graph-theoretical invariant which attracted a lot of attention in recent year… ▽ More

Rydberg atoms on a ladder
Abstract: In this article, we study the dynamic variant and the equilibrium variant of the model of Rydberg atoms on a square ladder. In the dynamic case, we obtain the jamming limit for all values of $b \ge 1$, where $b$ represents the so-called blockade range of a Rydberg atom. In the equilibrium case, we derive the complexity function for all values of $b \ge 1$. By comparing these results, we highlight… ▽ More

Metallic cubes
Abstract: We study a recursively defined two-parameter family of graphs which generalize Fibonacci cubes and Pell graphs and determine their basic structural and enumerative properties. In particular, we show that all of them are induced subgraphs of hypercubes and present their canonical decompositions. Further, we compute their metric invariants and establish some Hamiltonicity properties. We show that th… ▽ More

Sweet division problems: from chocolate bars to honeycomb strips and back
Abstract: We consider two division problems on narrow strips of square and hexagonal lattices. In both cases we compute the bivariate enumerating sequences and the corresponding generating functions, which allowed us to determine the asymptotic behavior of the total number of such subdivisions and the expected number of parts. For the square lattice we extend results of two recent references by establishing… ▽ More

Complexity Function of Jammed Configurations of Rydberg Atoms
Abstract: In this article, we determine the complexity function (configurational entropy) of jammed configurations of Rydberg atoms on a one-dimensional lattice. Our method consists of providing asymptotics for the number of jammed configurations determined by direct combinatorial reasoning. In this way we reduce the computation of complexity to solving a constrained optimization problem for the Shannon's e… ▽ More

Identities for full-history Horadam sequences
Abstract: We prove a master identity for a class of sequences defined by full-history linear homogeneous recurrences with (non-negative) constant coefficients. The identity is derived in a combinatorial way, providing thus combinatorial proofs for many known and new identities obtained as its corollaries. In particular, we prove several interesting identities for the Pell, the Jacobsthal, and the m-nacci nu… ▽ More

On a variant of Flory model
Abstract: We consider a one-dimensional variant of a recently introduced settlement planning problem in which houses can be built on finite portions of the rectangular integer lattice subject to certain requirements on the amount of insolation they receive. In our model, each house occupies a unit square on a $1 \times n$ strip, with the restriction that at least one of the neighboring squares must be free.… ▽ More

Tilings of a Honeycomb Strip and Higher Order Fibonacci Numbers
Abstract: In this paper we explore two types of tilings of a honeycomb strip and derive some closed form formulas for the number of tilings. Furthermore, we obtain some new identities involving tribonacci numbers, Padovan numbers and Narayana's cow sequence and provide combinatorial proofs for several known identities about those numbers.

Maximal matchings in polyspiro and benzenoid chains
Abstract: A matching $M$ of a graph $G$ is maximal if it is not a proper subset of any other matching in $G$. Maximal matchings are much less known and researched than their maximum and perfect counterparts. In particular, almost nothing is known about their enumerative properties. In this paper we present the recurrences and generating functions for the sequences enumerating maximal matchings in two classe… ▽ More

The signless Laplacian Estrada index of tricyclic graphs
Abstract: The signless Laplacian Estrada index of a graph $G$ is defined as $SLEE(G)=\sum^{n}_{i=1}e^{q_i}$ where $q_1, q_2, \ldots, q_n$ are the eigenvalues of the signless Laplacian matrix of $G$. In this paper, we show that there are exactly two tricyclic graphs with the maximal signless Laplacian Estrada index.

Calculus proofs of some combinatorial inequalities
Abstract: Using calculus we show how to prove some combinatorial inequalities of the type log-concavity or log-convexity. It is shown by this method that binomial coefficients and Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds are log-concave, and that Motzkin numbers and secondary structure numbers of rank 1 are log-convex. In fact, we prove via calculus a much stronger result that a natural continuous `… ▽ More

Log-balanced combinatorial sequences
Abstract: We consider log-convex sequences that satisfy an additional constraint imposed on their rate of growth. We call such sequences log-balanced. It is shown that all such sequences satisfy a pair of double inequalities. Sufficient conditions for log-balancedness are given for the case when the sequence satisfies a two- (or more-) term linear recurrence. It is shown that many combinatorially interest… ▽ More

Logarithmic behavior of some combinatorial sequences
Abstract: Two general methods for establishing the logarithmic behavior of recursively defined sequences of real numbers are presented. One is the interlacing method, and the other one is based on calculus. Both methods are used to prove logarithmic behavior of some combinatorially relevant sequences, such as Motzkin and Schröder numbers, sequences of values of some classic orthogonal polynomials, and man… ▽ More
