In cubic helimagnets MnSi and Cu2OSeO3 with their nearly isotropic magnetic properties, the magnetic structure undergoes helical deformation, which is almost completely determined by the helicoid wavenumber k = D / J, where magnetization field stiffness J is associated with isotropic spin exchange, and D is a pseudoscalar value characterizing the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. While the wavenumber can be measured directly in a diffraction experiment, the values of J and D can be calculated from the constants of pair spin interactions, which enter as parameters into the Heisenberg energy. However, the available analytical expression for D, which is of the first order in the spin-orbit coupling (SOC), has significant problems with accuracy. Here we show that hardly observable distortions of the magnetic structure, namely the antiferromagnetic spin cantings, can significantly change the constant D in the next approximation in SOC, thus affecting the wavenumber of magnetic helicoids. The obtained analytical expressions agree with the results of numerical simulation of magnetic helices in Cu2OSeO3 to within a few percent.

We show that new silicon crystalline phases, observed in the experiment with the laser-induced microexplosions inside silicon crystals (Rapp et al. // Nat. Commun. 6, 7555 (2015)), are all superstructures of a disordered high-symmetry phase with $Ia\bar{3}d$ cubic space group, as well as known for many years phases $bc8$ (Si-III) and $r8$ (Si-XII). The physics of this phenomenon is rather nontrivial: The $bc8$-like superstructures appear as regularly ordered patterns of switchable atomic strings, preserving everywhere the energetically favorable tetrahedral coordination of silicon atoms. The variety of superstructures arises because each string can be switched between two states independently of the others. An infinite family of different phases can be obtained this way and a number of them are considered here in detail. In addition to the known $bc8$, $bt8$, and $r8$ crystals, 128 tetrahedral structures with 16 (6 phases), 24 (22 phases), and 32 (100 phases) atoms per primitive cell are generated and studied, most of them are new ones. For the coarse-grain description of the structures with two possible states of switchable strings, the black/white (switched/nonswitched) Shubnikov symmetry groups has been used. An ab initio relaxation of the atomic positions and lattice parameters shows that all the considered phases are metastable and have higher density and energy relative to the $bc8$ phase at the ambient pressure. A possible scenario for appearance of those phases from the high-temperature amorphous phase is discussed.

The orbital contribution to the magnetic moment of the transition metal ion in the isostructural weak ferromagnets ACO$_3$ (A=Mn,Co,Ni) and FeBO$_3$ was investigated by a combination of first-principles calculations, non-resonant x-ray magnetic scattering and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. A non-trivial evolution of the orbital moment as a function of the $3d$ orbitals filling is revealed, with an anomalously large value found in the Co member of the family. Here, the coupling between magnetic and lattice degrees of freedom produced by the spin-orbit interaction results in a large single-ion anisotropy and a peculiar magnetic-moment-induced electron cloud distortion, evidenced by the appearance of a subtle scattering amplitude at space group-forbidden reflections and significant magnetostrictive effects. Our results, which complement a previous investigation on the sign of the Dzyaloshinskii$-$Moriya interaction across the series, highlight the importance of spin-orbit coupling in the physics of weak ferromagnets and prove the ability of modern first-principles calculations to predict the properties of materials where the Dzyaloshinskii$-$Moriya interaction is a fundamental ingredient of the magnetic Hamiltonian.

We discuss possible approaches to the problem of the URu2Si2 "Hidden Order" (HO) which remains unsolved after tremendous efforts of researches. Suppose there is no spatial symmetry breaking at the HO transition temperature and solely the time-reversal symmetry breaking emerges owing to some sort of magnetic order. As a result of its 4/mmm symmetry, each uranium atom is a three-dimensional magnetic vortex; its intra-atomic magnetization M(r) is intrinsically non-collinear, so that its dipole, quadrupole and toroidal moments vanish, thus making the vortex "hidden". The first non-zero magnetic multipole of the uranium vortex is the toroidal quadrupole. In the unit cell, two uranium vortices can have either the same or opposite signs of M(r); this corresponds to either ferro-vortex or antiferro-vortex structures with I4/mmm or P_I4/mmm magnetic space groups, respectively. Our first-principles calculations suggest that the vortex magnetic order of URu2Si2 is rather strong: the total absolute magnetization |M(r)| is about 0.9 mu_B per U atom, detectable by neutron scattering in spite of the unusual formfactor. The ferro-vortex and antiferro-vortex phases have almost the same energy and they are energetically favorable compared to the non-magnetic phase.

We observe and explain theoretically a dramatic evolution of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the series of isostructural weak ferromagnets, MnCO$_3$, FeBO$_3$, CoCO$_3$ and NiCO$_3$. The sign of the interaction is encoded in the phase of x-ray magnetic diffraction amplitude, observed through interference with resonant quadrupole scattering. We find very good quantitative agreement with first-principles electronic structure calculations, reproducing both sign and magnitude through the series, and propose a simplified `toy model' to explain the change in sign with 3 d shell filling. The model gives a clue for qualitative understanding of the evolution of the DMI in Mott and charge transfer insulators.

These cantings are the result of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and in many ways similar to the ferromagnetic cantings in weak ferromagnets. An expression for the local electric polarization is derived, including terms with gradients of magnetization M(r). When averaged over the crystal the electric polarization has a non-vanishing part associated with the anisotropy of the crystal point group 23. In the framework of the microscopic theory, it is shown that both scalar and vector products of spins, (s1 . s2) and [s1 x s2], can give contributions of the same order in the electric polarization.

KH2PO4 (KDP) belongs to the class of hydrogen-bonded ferroelectrics, whose paraelectric to ferroelectric phase transition is driven by the ordering of the protons in the hydrogen bonds. We demonstrate that forbidden reflections of KDP, when measured at an x-ray absorption edge, are highly sensitive to the asymmetry of proton configurations. The change of average symmetry caused by the "freezing" of the protons during the phase transition is clearly evidenced. In the paraelectric phase, we identify in the resonant spectra of the forbidden reflections a contribution related to the transient proton configurations in the hydrogen bonds, which violates the high average symmetry of the sites of the resonant atoms. The analysis of the temperature dependence reveals a change of relative probabilities of the different proton configurations. They follow the Arrhenius law, and the activation energies of polar and Slater configurations are 18.6 and 7.3 meV, respectively.

Specific heat data confirm the bulk nature of superconductivity in this ferromagnetic superconductor. The superconducting region forms a dome on the P-T diagram with a maximum of T$_c$ near 4 GPa. Ab initio simulations suggest that the observed weak magnetization emerges from the pronounced spin polarization with magnetic quadrupole and toroidal moments located at Rh and Ge sites.

The relations include the Blaschke terms determined by material-specific features - the zeros of transmission amplitude on the complex frequency plane. By the example of subwavelength arrays of chiral holes in silver films we show that the causality relations can be used not only for a precise verification of experimental data but also for resolving the positions of material anomalies and resonances and quantifying the degree of their chiral splitting.

Magnetism - the spontaneous alignment of atomic moments in a material - is driven by quantum-mechanical `exchange' interactions which operate over atomic distances as a result of the fundamental symmetry of electrons. Currently, one of the most active fields of condensed matter physics involves the study of magnetic interactions that cause, or are caused by a twisting of nearby atoms. This can lead to the magnetoelectric effect that couples electric and magnetic properties, and is predicted to play a prominent role in future technology. Here, we discuss the complex relativistic interplay between magnetism and atomic crystal structure in a class of materials called `weak ferromagnets'. The sign of the underpinning Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interaction has been determined for the first time, by using synchrotron radiation to study iron borate (FeBO3). We present a novel experimental technique based on interference between two x-ray scattering processes (one acts as a reference wave) which we combine with a second unusual approach of turning the atomic antiferromagnetic motif with a small magnetic field. We show that the experimental results provide a clear validation of state-of-the-art theoretical calculations. These experimental and theoretical approaches open up new possibilities for exploring, modelling and exploiting novel magnetic and magnetoelectric materials.

Twisted structures of chiral cubic ferromagnetics MnSi and Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ can be described both in the frame of the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory and using the microscopical Heisenberg formalism with a chirality brought in by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. Recent progress in quantum first-principal methods allows to calculate interatomic bond parameters of the Heisenberg model, namely, isotropic exchange constants $J_{ij}$ and DM vectors $\mathbf{D}_{ij}$, which can be used for simulations of observed magnetic textures and comparison of their calculated characteristics, such as magnetic helix sense and pitch, with the experimental data. In the present work, it is found that unaveraged microscopical details of the spin structures (the local canting) have a strong impact on the global twist and can notably change the helix propagation number. Coefficients ${\cal J}$ and ${\cal D}$ of the phenomenological theory and helix propagation number $k={\cal D}/2{\cal J}$ are derived from interatomic parameters $J_{ij}$ and $\mathbf{D}_{ij}$ of individual bonds for MnSi and Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ crystals and similar cubic magnetics with almost collinear spins.

The transition from the microscopic Heisenberg model to the macroscopic elastic theory is carried out for the chiral magnetics of MnSi-type with the B20 crystal structure. Both exchange and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions are taken into account for the first, second, and third magnetic neighbors. The particular components of the DM vectors of bonds are found, which are responsible for (i) the global magnetic twist and (ii) the canting between four different spin sublattices. A possible mechanism for effective reinforcement of the global magnetic twist is suggested: it is demonstrated that the components of the DM vectors normal to corresponding interatomic bonds become very important for the twisting power. The Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) theory is used for model calculation of exchange parameters. It is found that just the interplay between the exchange parameters of several magnetic shells rather than the signs of DM vectors can be responsible for the concentration-induced reverse of the magnetic chirality recently observed in the Mn_(1-x)Fe_xGe crystals.

The tilt angles of four Mn sublattices are determined by a component of the DM vector perpendicular to that one responsible for helical spiraling; both components have been evaluated using a simple model. The spiral magnetic order in cubic MnSi-type crystals is considered using the model of classical Heisenberg ferromagnetics with an extra interaction of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) type between neighboring atoms. It is found how the wave vector of magnetic helices depends on DM vector. The wave number k determines both the sign and strength of global spiraling whereas locally, within a unit cell, the helical order can be strongly frustrated so that the twist angles between neighboring ferromagnetic layers may be even of different signs. Conical deformations of helices caused by an arbitrary directed external magnetic field is also considered within the same model. The critical field of helix unwinding is found and it is shown that even in the unwound state there remains a residual periodic splay of magnetic moments which can be measured by diffraction methods. It is also demonstrated how the usually used continuous picture of moment distribution can be obtained from the discrete one in a coarse grain approximation.

'Forbidden' Bragg reflections of iron orthoborate Fe3BO6 were studied theoretically and experimentally in the vicinity of the iron K edge. Their energy spectra are explained as resulting from the interference of x-rays scattered from two inequivalent crystallographic sites occupied by iron ions. This particular structure property gives rise to complex azimuthal dependences of the reflection intensities in the pre-edge region as they result from the interplay of site specific dipole-quadrupole and quadrupole-quadrupole resonant scattering. Also evidenced is an isotropic character of the absorption spectrum. Self-absorption correction to the diffraction data, as well as possible contributions of thermal vibrations and magnetic order, are discussed. Particular care is given to extracting clean spectra from the data, and it is demonstrated that excellent results can be obtained even from measurements that appear corrupted by several effects such as poor crystal quality and multiple scattering.
