We study the interplay between epidemic dynamics and human decision making for epidemics that involve reinfection risk; in particular, the susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) and the susceptible-infected-recovered-infected (SIRI) epidemic models. In the proposed game-theoretic setting, individuals choose whether to adopt protection or not based on the trade-off between the cost of adopting protection and the risk of infection; the latter depends on the current prevalence of the epidemic and the fraction of individuals who adopt protection in the entire population. We define the coupled epidemic-behavioral dynamics by modeling the evolution of individual protection adoption behavior according to the replicator dynamics. For the SIS epidemic, we fully characterize the equilibria and their stability properties. We further analyze the coupled dynamics under timescale separation when individual behavior evolves faster than the epidemic, and characterize the equilibria of the resulting discontinuous hybrid dynamical system for both SIS and SIRI models. Numerical results illustrate how the coupled dynamics exhibits oscillatory behavior and convergence to sliding mode solutions under suitable parameter regimes.

We consider the class of SIS epidemic models in which a large population of individuals chooses whether to adopt protection or to remain unprotected as the epidemic evolves. For a susceptible individual, adopting protection reduces the probability of becoming infected but it comes with a cost that is weighed with the instantaneous risk of becoming infected. An infected individual adopting protection transmits a new infection with a smaller probability compared to an unprotected infected individual. We focus on the replicator evolutionary dynamics to model the evolution of protection decisions by susceptible and infected subpopulations. We completely characterize the existence and local stability of the equilibria of the resulting coupled epidemic and replicator dynamics. We further show how the stability of different equilibrium points gets exchanged as certain parameters change. Finally, we investigate the system behavior under timescale separation between the epidemic and the evolutionary dynamics.

Despite the success of the neural sequence-to-sequence model for abstractive text summarization, it has a few shortcomings, such as repeating inaccurate factual details and tending to repeat themselves. We propose a hybrid pointer generator network to solve the shortcomings of reproducing factual details inadequately and phrase repetition. We augment the attention-based sequence-to-sequence using a hybrid pointer generator network that can generate Out-of-Vocabulary words and enhance accuracy in reproducing authentic details and a coverage mechanism that discourages repetition. It produces a reasonable-sized output text that preserves the conceptual integrity and factual information of the input article. For evaluation, we primarily employed "BANSData" - a highly adopted publicly available Bengali dataset. Additionally, we prepared a large-scale dataset called "BANS-133" which consists of 133k Bangla news articles associated with human-generated summaries. Experimenting with the proposed model, we achieved ROUGE-1 and ROUGE-2 scores of 0.66, 0.41 for the "BANSData" dataset and 0.67, 0.42 for the BANS-133k" dataset, respectively. We demonstrated that the proposed system surpasses previous state-of-the-art Bengali abstractive summarization techniques and its stability on a larger dataset. "BANS-133" datasets and code-base will be publicly available for research.

Gait recognition using noninvasively acquired data has been attracting an increasing interest in the last decade. Among various modalities of data sources, it is experimentally found that the data involving skeletal representation are amenable for reliable feature compaction and fast processing. Model-based gait recognition methods that exploit features from a fitted model, like skeleton, are recognized for their view and scale-invariant properties. We propose a model-based gait recognition method, using sequences recorded by a single flash lidar. Existing state-of-the-art model-based approaches that exploit features from high quality skeletal data collected by Kinect and Mocap are limited to controlled laboratory environments. The performance of conventional research efforts is negatively affected by poor data quality. We address the problem of gait recognition under challenging scenarios, such as lower quality and noisy imaging process of lidar, that degrades the performance of state-of-the-art skeleton-based systems. We present GlidarCo to attain high accuracy on gait recognition under the described conditions. A filtering mechanism corrects faulty skeleton joint measurements, and robust statistics are integrated to conventional feature moments to encode the dynamic of the motion. As a comparison, length-based and vector-based features extracted from the noisy skeletons are investigated for outlier removal. Experimental results illustrate the efficacy of the proposed methodology in improving gait recognition given noisy low resolution lidar data.

Gait recognition is a leading remote-based identification method, suitable for real-world surveillance and medical applications. Model-based gait recognition methods have been particularly recognized due to their scale and view-invariant properties. We present the first model-based gait recognition methodology, $\mathcal{G}$lidar3DJ using a skeleton model extracted from sequences generated by a single flash lidar camera. Existing successful model-based approaches take advantage of high quality skeleton data collected by Kinect and Mocap, for example, are not practicable for applications outside the laboratory. The low resolution and noisy imaging process of lidar negatively affects the performance of state-of-the-art skeleton-based systems, generating a significant number of outlier skeletons. We propose a rule-based filtering mechanism that adopts robust statistics to correct for skeleton joint measurements. Quantitative measurements validate the efficacy of the proposed method in improving gait recognition.

However, the environment, optics, electronics of the physical imaging systems can introduce extreme distortions and noise in the acquired images. In this work, we explore the use of reservoir computing, a dynamical neural network model inspired from biological systems, in creating dynamic image filtering systems that extracts signal from noise using inverse modeling. We discuss the possibility of implementing these networks in hardware close to the sensors.

Electronic and atomic structures of the clean, and As and Te covered Si(211) surface are studied using pseudopotential density functional method. The clean surface is found to have (2 X 1) and rebonded (1 X 1) reconstructions as stable surface structures, but no π-bonded chain reconstruction. Binding energies of As and Te adatoms at a number of symmetry sites on the ideal and (2 X 1) reconstructed surfaces have been calculated because of their importance in the epitaxial growth of CdTe and other materials on the Si(211) surface. The special symmetry sites on these surfaces having the highest binding energies for isolated As and Te adatoms are identified. But more significantly, several sites are found to be nearly degenerate in binding energy values. This has important consequences for epitaxial growth processes. Optimal structures calculated for 0.5 ML of As and Te coverage reveal that the As adatoms dimerize on the surface while the Te adatoms do not. However, both As and Te covered surfaces are found to be metallic in nature.
