We analyze the microscopic few-body properties of dipolar particles confined in two parallel quasi-one-dimensional harmonic traps. In particular, we show that an adiabatic rotation of the dipole orientation about the trap axes can drive an initially non-localized few-fermion state into a localized state with strong inter-trap pairing. For an instant, non-adiabatic rotation, however, localization is inhibited and a highly excited state is reached. This state may be interpreted as the few-body analog of a super-Tonks-Girardeau state, known from one-dimensional systems with contact interactions.

Strongly interacting one-dimensional fermions form an effective spin chain in the absence of an external lattice potential. We show that the exchange coefficients of such a chain may be locally tuned by properly tailoring the transversal confinement. In particular, in the vicinity of a confinement-induced resonance (CIR) the exchange coefficients may have simultaneously opposite ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic characters at different locations along the trap axis. Moreover, the local exchanges may be engineered to induce avoided crossings between spin states at the CIR, and hence a ramp across the resonance may be employed to create different spin states and to induce spin dynamics in the chain. We show that such unusual spin chains have already been realized in the experiment of Murmann et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 215301 (2015)].

Strongly interacting one-dimensional (1D) Bose-Fermi mixtures form a tunable XXZ spin chain. Within the spin-chain model developed here, all properties of these systems can be calculated from states representing the ordering of the bosons and fermions within the atom chain and from the ground-state wave function of spinless noninteracting fermions. We validate the model by means of an exact diagonalization of the full few-body Hamiltonian in the strongly interacting regime. Using the model, we explore the phase diagram of the atom chain as a function of the boson-boson (BB) and boson-fermion (BF) interaction strengths and calculate the densities, momentum distributions, and trap-level occupancies for up to 17 particles. In particular, we find antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) order and a demixing of the bosons and fermions in certain interaction regimes. We find, however, no demixing for equally strong BB and BF interactions in agreement with earlier calculations that combined the Bethe ansatz with a local-density approximation.

One-dimensional spinor gases with strong delta interaction fermionize and form a spin chain. The spatial degrees of freedom of this atom chain can be described by a map** to spinless noninteracting fermions and the spin degrees of freedom are described by a spin-chain model with nearest-neighbor interactions. Here, we compute momentum and occupation-number distributions of up to 16 strongly interacting spinor fermions and bosons as a function of their spin imbalance, the strength of an externally applied magnetic field gradient, the length of their spin, and for different excited states of the multiplet. We show that the ground-state momentum distributions resemble those of the corresponding noninteracting systems, apart from flat background distributions, which extend to high momenta. Moreover, we show that the spin order of the spin chain---in particular antiferromagnetic spin order---may be deduced from the momentum and occupation-number distributions of the system. Finally, we present efficient numerical methods for the calculation of the single-particle densities and one-body density matrix elements and of the local exchange coefficients of the spin chain for large systems containing more than 20 strongly interacting particles in arbitrary confining potentials.

Quantum mechanics predicts that our physical reality is influenced by events that can potentially happen but factually do not occur. Interaction-free measurements (IFMs) exploit this counterintuitive influence to detect the presence of an object without requiring any interaction with it. Here we propose and realize an IFM concept based on an unstable many-particle system. In our experiments, we employ an ultracold gas in an unstable spin configuration which can undergo a rapid decay. The object - realized by a laser beam - prevents this decay due to the indirect quantum Zeno effect and thus, its presence can be detected without interacting with a single atom. Contrary to existing proposals, our IFM does not require single-particle sources and is only weakly affected by losses and decoherence. We demonstrate confidence levels of 90%, well beyond previous optical experiments.

We report on the deterministic preparation of antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chains consisting of up to four fermionic atoms in a one-dimensional trap. These chains are stabilized by strong repulsive interactions between the two spin components without the need for an external periodic potential. We independently characterize the spin configuration of the chains by measuring the spin orientation of the outermost particle in the trap and by projecting the spatial wave function of one spin component on single-particle trap levels. Our results are in good agreement with a spin-chain model for fermionized particles and with numerically exact diagonalizations of the full few-fermion system.

We have investigated spin dynamics in a 2D quantum gas. Through spin-changing collisions, two clouds with opposite spin orientations are spontaneously created in a Bose-Einstein condensate. After ballistic expansion, both clouds acquire ring-shaped density distributions with superimposed angular density modulations. The density distributions depend on the applied magnetic field and are well explained by a simple Bogoliubov model. We show that the two clouds are anti-correlated in momentum space. The observed momentum correlations pave the way towards the creation of an atom source with non-local Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen entanglement.

We present an analytical model for the theoretical analysis of spin dynamics and spontaneous symmetry breaking in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). This allows for an excellent intuitive understanding of the processes and provides good quantitative agreement with experimental results in Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 135302 (2010). It is shown that the dynamics of a spinor BEC initially prepared in an unstable Zeeman state mF=0 (|0>) can be understood by approximating the effective trap** potential for the state |+-1> with a cylindrical box potential. The resonances in the creation efficiency of these atom pairs can be traced back to excitation modes of this confinement. The understanding of these excitation modes allows for a detailed characterization of the symmetry breaking mechanism, showing how a twofold spontaneous breaking of spatial and spin symmetry can occur. In addition a detailed account of the experimental methods for the preparation and analysis of spinor quantum gases is given.

We demonstrate that at low density these systems provide a realization of a single-component one-dimensional Fermi gas with a generalized contact interaction. Using an exact duality between one-dimensional Fermi and Bose gases, we show that when the dipole moment is strong enough, bound many-body states exist, and we calculate the critical coupling strength for the emergence of these states. At higher densities, the Hartree-Fock approximation is accurate, and by combining the two approaches we determine the structure of the phase diagram. The many-body bound states should be accessible in future experiments with ultracold polar molecules.

We construct the effective lowest-band Bose-Hubbard model incorporating interaction-induced on-site correlations. The model is based on ladder operators for local correlated states, which deviate from the usual Wannier creation and annihilation, allowing for a systematic construction of the most appropriate single-band low-energy description in the form of the extended Bose-Hubbard model. A formulation of this model in terms of ladder operators not only naturally contains the previously found effective multibody interactions, but also contains multibody-induced single-particle tunneling, pair tunneling, and nearest-neighbor interaction processes of higher orders. An alternative description of the same model can be formulated in terms of occupation-dependent Bose-Hubbard parameters. These multiparticle effects can be enhanced using Feshbach resonances, leading to corrections which are well within experimental reach and of significance to the phase diagram of ultracold bosonic atoms in an optical lattice. We analyze the energy-reduction mechanism of interacting atoms on a local lattice site and show that this cannot be explained only by a spatial broadening of Wannier orbitals on a single-particle level, which neglects correlations.

Parametric amplification of quantum fluctuations constitutes a fundamental mechanism for spontaneous symmetry breaking. In our experiments, a spinor condensate acts as a parametric amplifier of spin modes, resulting in a twofold spontaneous breaking of spatial and spin symmetry in the amplified clouds. Our experiments permit a precise analysis of the amplification in specific spatial Bessel-like modes, allowing for the detailed understanding of the double symmetry breaking. On resonances that create vortex-antivortex superpositions, we show that the cylindrical spatial symmetry is spontaneously broken, but phase squeezing prevents spin-symmetry breaking. If, however, nondegenerate spin modes contribute to the amplification, quantum interferences lead to spin-dependent density profiles and hence spontaneously-formed patterns in the longitudinal magnetization.

Spin-changing collisions may lead under proper conditions to the parametric amplification of matter waves in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates. Magnetic dipole-dipole interactions, although typically very weak in alkaline atoms, are shown to play a very relevant role in the amplification process. We show that these interactions may lead to a strong dependence of the amplification dynamics on the angle between the trap axis and the magnetic-field orientation. We analyze as well the important role played by magnetic-field gradients, which modify also strongly the amplification process. Magnetic-field gradients must be hence carefully controlled in future experiments, in order to observe clearly the effects of the dipolar interactions in the amplification dynamics.

We study the dependency of the quantum spin dynamics on the particle number in a system of ultracold spin-1 atoms within the single-spatial-mode approximation. We find, for all strengths of the spin-dependent interaction, convergence towards the mean-field dynamics in the thermodynamic limit. The convergence is, however, particularly slow when the spin-changing collisional energy and the quadratic Zeeman energy are equal, i.e. deviations between quantum and mean-field spin dynamics may be extremely large under these conditions. Our estimates show, that quantum corrections to the mean-field dynamics may play a relevant role in experiments with spinor Bose-Einstein condensates. This is especially the case in the regime of few atoms, which may be accessible in optical lattices. Here, spin dynamics is modulated by a beat note at large magnetic fields due to the significant influence of correlated many-body spin states.

We study the ground state of few bosons with repulsive dipole-dipole interaction in a quasi-one-dimensional harmonic trap by means of the exact diagonalization method. Up to three interaction regimes are found depending on the strength of the dipolar interaction and the ratio of transverse to axial oscillator lengths: a regime where the dipolar Bose gas resembles a system of weakly delta-interacting bosons, a second regime where the bosons are fermionized, and a third regime where the bosons form a Wigner crystal. In the first two regimes, the dipole-dipole potential can be replaced by a delta potential. In the crystalline state, the overlap between the localized wave packets is strongly reduced and all the properties of the boson system equal those of its fermionic counterpart. The transition from the Tonks-Girardeau gas to the solidlike state is accompanied by a rapid increase of the interaction energy and a considerable change of the momentum distribution, which we trace back to the different short-range correlations in the two interaction regimes.

We develop an exact diagonalization approach to the coupling between center-of-mass and relative motion and numerically determine the spectrum of the system. At the same time, our approach allows us to treat the anharmonicity of the lattice potential exactly. Within the pseudopotential model, the center of the Feshbach resonance can be precisely determined from the experimental data.
