Automated speaker identification (SID) is a crucial step for the personalization of a wide range of speech-enabled services. Typical SID systems use a symmetric enrollment-verification framework with a single model to derive embeddings both offline for voice profiles extracted from enrollment utterances, and online from runtime utterances. Due to the distinct circumstances of enrollment and runtime, such as different computation and latency constraints, several applications would benefit from an asymmetric enrollment-verification framework that uses different models for enrollment and runtime embedding generation. To support this asymmetric SID where each of the two models can be updated independently, we propose using a lightweight neural network to map the embeddings from the two independent models to a shared speaker embedding space. Our results show that this approach significantly outperforms cosine scoring in a shared speaker logit space for models that were trained with a contrastive loss on large datasets with many speaker identities. This proposed Neural Embedding Speaker Space Alignment (NESSA) combined with an asymmetric update of only one of the models delivers at least 60% of the performance gain achieved by updating both models in the standard symmetric SID approach.

This paper contains a post-challenge performance analysis on cross-lingual speaker verification of the IDLab submission to the VoxCeleb Speaker Recognition Challenge 2021 (VoxSRC-21). We show that current speaker embedding extractors consistently underestimate speaker similarity in within-speaker cross-lingual trials. Consequently, the typical training and scoring protocols do not put enough emphasis on the compensation of intra-speaker language variability. We propose two techniques to increase cross-lingual speaker verification robustness. First, we enhance our previously proposed Large-Margin Fine-Tuning (LM-FT) training stage with a mini-batch sampling strategy which increases the amount of intra-speaker cross-lingual samples within the mini-batch. Second, we incorporate language information in the logistic regression calibration stage. We integrate quality metrics based on soft and hard decisions of a VoxLingua107 language identification model. The proposed techniques result in a 11.7% relative improvement over the baseline model on the VoxSRC-21 test set and contributed to our third place finish in the corresponding challenge.

This speaker verification competition focuses on short duration test recordings and cross-lingual trials. Currently, both Time Delay Neural Networks (TDNNs) and ResNets achieve state-of-the-art results in speaker verification. We opt to use a system fusion of hybrid architectures in our final submission. An ECAPA-TDNN baseline is enhanced with a 2D convolutional stem to transfer some of the strong characteristics of a ResNet based model to this hybrid CNN-TDNN architecture. Similarly, we incorporate absolute frequency positional information in the SE-ResNet architectures. All models are trained with a special mini-batch data sampling technique which constructs mini-batches with data that is the most challenging for the system on the level of intra-speaker variability. This intra-speaker variability is mainly caused by differences in language and background conditions between the speaker's utterances. The cross-lingual effects on the speaker verification scores are further compensated by introducing a binary cross-linguality trial feature in the logistic regression based system calibration. The final system fusion with two ECAPA CNN-TDNNs and three SE-ResNets enhanced with frequency positional information achieved a third place on the VoxSRC-21 leaderboard for both track 1 and 2 with a minDCF of 0.1291 and 0.1313 respectively.

We present an iVector based Acoustic Scene Classification (ASC) system suited for real life settings where active foreground speech can be present. In the proposed system, each recording is represented by a fixed-length iVector that models the recording's important properties. A regularized Gaussian backend classifier with class-specific covariance models is used to extract the relevant acoustic scene information from these iVectors. To alleviate the large performance degradation when a foreground speaker dominates the captured signal, we investigate the use of the iVector framework on Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) that are derived from an estimate of the noise power spectral density. This noise-floor can be extracted in a statistical manner for single channel recordings. We show that the use of noise-floor features is complementary to multi-condition training in which foreground speech is added to training signal to reduce the mismatch between training and testing conditions. Experimental results on the DCASE 2016 Task 1 dataset show that the noise-floor based features and multi-condition training realize significant classification accuracy gains of up to more than 25 percentage points (absolute) in the most adverse conditions. These promising results can further facilitate the integration of ASC in resource-constrained devices such as hearables.

Currently, both Time Delay Neural Networks (TDNNs) and ResNets achieve state-of-the-art results in speaker verification. We introduce a 2D convolutional stem in a strong ECAPA-TDNN baseline to transfer some of the strong characteristics of a ResNet based model to this hybrid CNN-TDNN architecture. Similarly, we incorporate absolute frequency positional encodings in an SE-ResNet34 architecture. These learnable feature map biases along the frequency axis offer this architecture a straightforward way to exploit frequency positional information. We also propose a frequency-wise variant of Squeeze-Excitation (SE) which better preserves frequency-specific information when rescaling the feature maps. Both modified architectures significantly outperform their corresponding baseline on the SdSVC-21 evaluation data and the original VoxCeleb1 test set. A four system fusion containing the two improved architectures achieved a third place in the final SdSVC-21 Task 2 ranking.

Learning robust speaker embeddings is a crucial step in speaker diarization. Deep neural networks can accurately capture speaker discriminative characteristics and popular deep embeddings such as x-vectors are nowadays a fundamental component of modern diarization systems. Recently, some improvements over the standard TDNN architecture used for x-vectors have been proposed. The ECAPA-TDNN model, for instance, has shown impressive performance in the speaker verification domain, thanks to a carefully designed neural model.
In this work, we extend, for the first time, the use of the ECAPA-TDNN model to speaker diarization. Moreover, we improved its robustness with a powerful augmentation scheme that concatenates several contaminated versions of the same signal within the same training batch. The ECAPA-TDNN model turned out to provide robust speaker embeddings under both close-talking and distant-talking conditions. Our results on the popular AMI meeting corpus show that our system significantly outperforms recently proposed approaches.

In this technical report we describe the IDLAB top-scoring submissions for the VoxCeleb Speaker Recognition Challenge 2020 (VoxSRC-20) in the supervised and unsupervised speaker verification tracks. For the supervised verification tracks we trained 6 state-of-the-art ECAPA-TDNN systems and 4 Resnet34 based systems with architectural variations. On all models we apply a large margin fine-tuning strategy, which enables the training procedure to use higher margin penalties by using longer training utterances. In addition, we use quality-aware score calibration which introduces quality metrics in the calibration system to generate more consistent scores across varying levels of utterance conditions. A fusion of all systems with both enhancements applied led to the first place on the open and closed supervised verification tracks. The unsupervised system is trained through contrastive learning. Subsequent pseudo-label generation by iterative clustering of the training embeddings allows the use of supervised techniques. This procedure led to the winning submission on the unsupervised track, and its performance is closing in on supervised training.

In this paper we propose and analyse a large margin fine-tuning strategy and a quality-aware score calibration in text-independent speaker verification. Large margin fine-tuning is a secondary training stage for DNN based speaker verification systems trained with margin-based loss functions. It enables the network to create more robust speaker embeddings by enabling the use of longer training utterances in combination with a more aggressive margin penalty. Score calibration is a common practice in speaker verification systems to map output scores to well-calibrated log-likelihood-ratios, which can be converted to interpretable probabilities. By including quality features in the calibration system, the decision thresholds of the evaluation metrics become quality-dependent and more consistent across varying trial conditions. Applying both enhancements on the ECAPA-TDNN architecture leads to state-of-the-art results on all publicly available VoxCeleb1 test sets and contributed to our winning submissions in the supervised verification tracks of the VoxCeleb Speaker Recognition Challenge 2020.

In this paper we describe the top-scoring IDLab submission for the text-independent task of the Short-duration Speaker Verification (SdSV) Challenge 2020. The main difficulty of the challenge exists in the large degree of varying phonetic overlap between the potentially cross-lingual trials, along with the limited availability of in-domain DeepMine Farsi training data. We introduce domain-balanced hard prototype mining to fine-tune the state-of-the-art ECAPA-TDNN x-vector based speaker embedding extractor. The sample mining technique efficiently exploits speaker distances between the speaker prototypes of the popular AAM-softmax loss function to construct challenging training batches that are balanced on the domain-level. To enhance the scoring of cross-lingual trials, we propose a language-dependent s-norm score normalization. The imposter cohort only contains data from the Farsi target-domain which simulates the enrollment data always being Farsi. In case a Gaussian-Backend language model detects the test speaker embedding to contain English, a cross-language compensation offset determined on the AAM-softmax speaker prototypes is subtracted from the maximum expected imposter mean score. A fusion of five systems with minor topological tweaks resulted in a final MinDCF and EER of 0.065 and 1.45% respectively on the SdSVC evaluation set.

Current speaker verification techniques rely on a neural network to extract speaker representations. The successful x-vector architecture is a Time Delay Neural Network (TDNN) that applies statistics pooling to project variable-length utterances into fixed-length speaker characterizing embeddings. In this paper, we propose multiple enhancements to this architecture based on recent trends in the related fields of face verification and computer vision. Firstly, the initial frame layers can be restructured into 1-dimensional Res2Net modules with impactful skip connections. Similarly to SE-ResNet, we introduce Squeeze-and-Excitation blocks in these modules to explicitly model channel interdependencies. The SE block expands the temporal context of the frame layer by rescaling the channels according to global properties of the recording. Secondly, neural networks are known to learn hierarchical features, with each layer operating on a different level of complexity. To leverage this complementary information, we aggregate and propagate features of different hierarchical levels. Finally, we improve the statistics pooling module with channel-dependent frame attention. This enables the network to focus on different subsets of frames during each of the channel's statistics estimation. The proposed ECAPA-TDNN architecture significantly outperforms state-of-the-art TDNN based systems on the VoxCeleb test sets and the 2019 VoxCeleb Speaker Recognition Challenge.

The role of Poincaré covariant space-time translations is investigated in the case of the pseudoscalar-meson charge form factors calculated within a relativistic quantum mechanics framework. It is shown that this role extends beyond the standard energy-momentum conservation, which is accounted for in all works based on this general approach. It implies constraints that have been largely ignored until now but should be nevertheless fulfilled to ensure the full Poincaré covariance. The violation of these constraints, which is more or less important depending on the form of relativistic quantum mechanics that is employed, points to the validity of using a single-particle current, which is generally assumed in calculations of form factors. In short, these constraints concern the relation of the momentum transferred to the constituents to the one transferred to the system, which most often differ in relativistic quantum mechanics while they are equal in field theory. How to account for the constraints, as well as restoring the equivalence of different relativistic quantum mechanics approaches in estimating form factors, is discussed. It is mentioned that the result so obtained can be identified to a dispersion-relation one. A short conclusion relative to the underlying dynamics is given in the pion case.

Constraints related to transformations of currents under space-time translations have been considered for the relativistic quantum mechanics calculation of form factors of J=0 systems composed of scalar constituents with equal masses. Accounting for these constraints amounts to take into account many-body currents that restore the equality of the momentum transferred separately to the system and to the constituents, which holds in field-theory approaches but is not generally fulfilled in relativistic quantum mechanics ones. When this was done, discrepancies between results from different approaches could be found to vanish. The results are extended here to systems composed of spin-1/2 constituents with unequal masses. Moreover, as far as the equivalence of different approaches is concerned, some intermediate step could be skipped and the presentation of these results therefore slightly differs from the previous one. Due to the technical aspect of present results, this work is not aimed to be published but it could be useful for some applications like the form factors of the pion or kaon particles.

This is done using the solution of a mass operator that contains both confinement and one-gluon-exchange interactions. Results of calculations, based on a one-body current, are compared to experiment for the first one. As it could be expected, those point-form, and instant and front-form ones in a parallel momentum configuration fail to reproduce experiment. The other results corresponding to a perpendicular momentum configuration (instant form in the Breit frame and front form with $q^+=0$) do much better. The comparison of charge and scalar form factors shows that the spin-1/2 nature of the constituents plays an important role. Taking into account that only the last set of results represents a reasonable basis for improving the description of the charge form factor, this one is then discussed with regard to the asymptotic QCD-power-law behavior $Q^{-2}$. The contribution of two-body currents in achieving the right power law is considered while the scalar form factor, $F_0(Q^2)$, is shown to have the right power-law behavior in any case. The low-$Q^2$ behavior of the charge form factor and the pion-decay constant are also discussed.}

The comparison of form factors calculated from a single-particle current in different relativistic quantum mechanic approaches evidences tremendous discrepancies. The role of constraints coming from space-time translations is considered here with this respect. It is known that invariance under these translations implies the energy-momentum conservation relation that is usually assumed to hold globally. Transformations of the current under these translations, which lead to this result, also imply constraints that have been ignored so far in relativistic quantum mechanic approaches. An implementation of these constraints is discussed in the case of a model with two scalar constituents. It amounts to incorporate selected two-body currents to all orders in the interaction. Discrepancies for form factors in different approaches can thus be removed, contributing to restore the equivalence of different approaches. Results for the standard front-form approach ($q^+=0$) are found to fulfill the constraints and are therefore unchanged. The relation with results from a dispersion-relation approach is also made.

Different relativistic quantum mechanics approaches have recently been used to calculate properties of various systems, form factors in particular. It is known that predictions, which most often rely on a single-particle current approximation, can lead to predictions with a very large range. It was shown that accounting for constraints related to space-time translations could considerably reduce this range. It is shown here that predictions can be made identical for a large range of cases. These ones include the following approaches: instant form, front form, and "point-form" in arbitrary momentum configurations and a dispersion-relation approach which can be considered as the approach which the other ones should converge to. This important result supposes both an implementation of the above constraints and an appropriate single-particle-like current. The change of variables that allows one to establish the equivalence of the approaches is given. Some points are illustrated with numerical results for the ground state of a system consisting of scalar particles.

At the present time, it is introduced in the theory by requiring that the SU(2) subgroup entering the description of interactions involves the left components. In the present contribution, one elaborates upon a suggestion made by Landau that particles and antiparticles could be like "stereo-isomeric" molecules, which would naturally provides parity violation. Particles and antiparticles could thus be combinations of the parity doublets associated with a chiral symmetry realized in the Wigner-Weyl mode. Consequences of such a description and the possible problems it could raise are examined.

Different approaches have been applied to the calculation of form factors of various hadronic systems within relativistic quantum mechanics. In a one-body current approximation, they can lead to results evidencing large discrepancies. Looking for an explanation of this spreading, it is shown that, for the largest part, these discrepancies can be related to a violation of Poincaré space-time translation invariance. Beyond energy-momentum conservation, which is generally assumed, fulfilling this symmetry implies specific relations that are generally ignored. Their relevance within the present context is discussed in detail both to explain the differences between predictions and to remove them.

We include one-pion exchange at leading order and the two-pion exchange and two-nucleon contact terms at next-to-next-to-leading order. The effects of intermediate (two-pion exchange) and short-range (two-nucleon contact) terms are probed by calculating the photon asymmetry $A_γ$ in $\vec{n} p \to d γ$ employing Siegert's theorem and an accurate phenomenological potential for the parity-conserving NN interaction. We explore in detail the uncertainties due to the parameters that control the contribution of the short-range interaction. We obtain about 20% uncertainty in the value of $A_γ$ up to the next-to-next-to leading order. We discuss the implication of this uncertainty for the determination of the weak pion-nucleon coupling constant and how the uncertainty can be reduced.

By looking at the parity-nonconserving (PNC) asymmetries at different energies in $\vec{p} p$ scattering, it is in principle possible to determine the PNC $ρNN$ and $ωNN$ couplings of a single-meson-exchange model of the PNC $NN$ force. The analysis of the experimental data at 13.6, 45 and 221 MeV simultaneously has been performed by Carlson \textit{et al.}, who concluded to an agreement with the original DDH estimates for the PNC meson-nucleon couplings. In this work, it is shown first that the comparison with updated hadronic predictions of these couplings rather suggests the existence of some discrepancy for the PNC $ωNN$ coupling. The effect of variations on the strong coupling constants and introduction of cutoffs in the one-boson-exchange weak potential is then investigated. As expected, it turns out that the resulting asymmetry is quite sensitive to these parameters regardless of the energy. However the above discrepancy persists. The dependence of this conclusion on various ingredients entering an improved description of the PNC $NN$ force is also examined. These include the two-pion resonance nature of the rho meson and some momentum dependence of the isoscalar PNC $ρNN$ vertex. It is found that none of these corrections is able to remove or even alleviate the above discrepancy. Their impacts on the theoretical determination of the vector meson-nucleon couplings, the description of the PNC force in terms of single-meson exchanges, or the interpretation of measurements, are finally examined.

Form factors of a simple system have been calculated in various forms of relativistic quantum mechanics, using a single-particle current. Their comparison has shown large discrepancies. The comparison is extended here to instant- and front-form calculations in unusual momentum configurations as well as to a point-form approach inspired from the Dirac's one (based on a hyperboloid surface). It is found that these new results depend on the momentum transfer, Q, through its ratio to the total mass, Q/M, (closely related to the Breit-frame velocity of the system). They evidence features similar for a part to those shown by an earlier ``point-form'' implementation (based on hyperplanes perpendicular to the velocity of the initial and final states). It thus appears that the standard instant- and front-form calculations, which generally do well compared either to experiment or to predictions of a theoretical model, rather represent exceptional cases. An argument explaining the success of these last approaches is presented and discussed. It is based on transformations of currents under Poincaré space-time translations, going beyond the energy-momentum conservation property which results from the Lagrangian invariance under them. Depending on the approach, analytic or approximate numerical methods are proposed to correct form factors for missing constraints then expected.

This paper describes a tentative relativistic quantum mechanics approach inspired by Dirac's point-form, which is based on the physics description on a hyperboloid surface. It is mainly characterized by a non-standard relation of the constituent momenta of some system to its total momentum. Contrary to instant- and front-form approaches, where it takes the form of a 3-dimensional delta function, the relation is given here by a Lorentz-scalar constraint. Thus, in the c.m. frame, the sum of the constituent momenta, which differs from zero off-energy shell, has no fixed direction, in accordance with the absence of preferred direction on a hyperboloid surface. To some extent, this gives rise to an extra degree of freedom entering the description of the system of interest. The development of a consistent formalism within this picture is described. Comparison with other approaches is made.

Different approaches are considered including solutions of a Bethe-Salpeter equation, a ``point form'' approach to relativistic quantum mechanics and a non-relativistic one. The comparison of the Bethe-Salpeter results, which play the role of an ``experiment'' here, with the ones obtained in ``point form'' in single-particle approximation, evidences sizable discrepancies, pointing to large contributions from two-body currents in the latter approach. These ones are constructed using two constraints: ensuring current conservation and reproducing the Born amplitude. The two-body currents so obtained are qualitatively very different from standard ones. Quantitatively, they turn out not to be sufficient to remedy all the shortcomings of the ``point form'' form factors evidenced in impulse approximation.

While they should a priori be better, they turn out to be further away from an exact calculation in the case of scalar neutral particles or from experiment in the case of the Coulomb interaction. Part of the discrepancy is due to the omission in the interaction kernel of contributions corresponding to crossed-boson-exchange diagrams. The effect of non-locality in the NN interaction with an off-energy shell character has been studied in the past in relation with the possibility that some models could be approximately phase-shifts equivalent. This work is extended to a non-locality implying terms that involve an anticommutator with the operator p^2. It includes both scalar and tensor components. The most recent ``high accuracy'' models are considered in the analysis. After studying the deuteron wave functions, electromagnetic properties of various models are compared with the idea that these ones differ by their non-locality but are equivalent up to a unitary transformation. It is found that the extra non-local tensor interaction considered in this work tends to re-enforce the role of the term considered in previous works, allowing one to explain almost completely the difference in the deuteron D-state probabilities evidenced by the comparison of the Bonn-QB and Paris models for instance. Conclusions for the effect of the non-local scalar interaction are not so clear. In many cases, it was found that these terms could explain part of the differences that the comparison of predictions for various models evidences but cases where they could not were also found. Some of these last ones have been analyzed in order to pointing out the origin of the failure.

We calculate the deuteron anapole moment with the wave functions obtained from the Argonne $v18$ nucleon-nucleon interaction model. The anapole moment operators are considered at the leading order. To minimize the uncertainty due to a lack of current conservation, we calculate the matrix element of the anapole moment from the original definition. In virtue of accurate wave functions, we can obtain a more precise value of the deuteron anapole moment which contains less uncertainty than the former works. We obtain a result reduced by more than 25% in the magnitude of the deuteron anapole moment. The reduction of individual nuclear contributions is much more important however, varying from a factor 2 for the spin part to a factor 4 for the convection and associated two-body currents.

The effect of different boost expressions is considered for the calculation of the ground-state form factor of a two-body system made of scalar particles interacting via the exchange of a scalar boson. The aim is to provide an uncertainty range on methods employed in implementing these effects as well as an insight on their relevance when an ``exact'' calculation is possible. Using a wave function corresponding to a mass operator that has the appropriate properties to construct the generators of the Poincaré algebra in the framework of relativistic quantum mechanics, form factors are calculated using the boost transformations pertinent to the instant, front and point forms of this approach. Moderately and strongly bound systems are considered with masses of the exchanged boson taken as zero, 0.15 times the constituent mass $m$, and infinity. In the first and last cases, a comparison with ``exact'' calculations is made (Wick-Cutkosky model and Feynman triangle diagram). Results with a Galilean boost are also given. Momentum transfers up to $Q^2=100 m^2$ are considered. Emphasis is put on the contribution of the single-particle current, as usually done. It is found that the present point-form calculations of form factors strongly deviate from all the other ones, requiring large contributions from two-body currents. Different implementations of the point-form approach, where the role of these two-body currents would be less important, are sketched.

By examining the expressions of the complete calculation in different frames, we obtain an effective boost transformation which can be compared to the relativistic kinematical one underlying the present point-form calculations, as well as to the Galilean boost. We study the effects of the | qqq q\bar{q} > component of the hadronic wave function on the description of the electromagnetic structure of the nucleon. Starting with a qqq baryonic wave function which describes the baryonic and mesonic low energy spectrum, the extra q\bar{q} pair is generated through a relativistic version of the 3P_0 model. It is shown that this model leads to a renormalization of the quark mass that allows one to construct a conserved electromagnetic current. We conclude that these dynamical relativistic corrections play an important role in reproducing the Q2 dependence of the electromagnetic form factors at low Q^2.

It is known that binding energies calculated from the Bethe-Salpeter equation in ladder approximation can be reasonably well accounted for by an energy-dependent interaction, at least for the lowest states. It is also known that none of these approaches gives results close to what is obtained by using the same interaction in the so-called instantaneous approximation, which is often employed in non-relativistic calculations. However, a recently proposed effective interaction was shown to account for the main features of both the Bethe-Salpeter equation and the energy-dependent approach. In the present work, a detailed comparison of these different methods for calculating binding energies of a two-particle system is made. Some improvement, previously incorporated for the zero-mass boson case in the derivation of the effective interaction, is also employed for massive bosons. The constituent particles are taken to be distinguishable and spinless. Different masses of the exchanged boson (including a zero mass) as well as states with different angular momenta are considered and the contribution of the crossed two-boson exchange diagram is discussed. With this respect, the role played by the charge of the exchanged boson is emphasized. It is shown that the main difference between the Bethe-Salpeter results and the instantaneous approximation ones are not due to relativity as often conjectured.
