In order to give precise theory predictions, it is crucial that uncertainties from non-perturbative QCD are under control and properly included. The dominant QCD uncertainties originate from the hadronic B --> K^* form factors and from charm loops. We present a systematic method to include factorisable power corrections to the form factors in the framework of QCD factorisation and study the impact of the scheme chosen to define the soft form factors. We also discuss charm-loop effects.

The hierarchy of scales which would allow dimension-six contact interactions to parametrise New Physics may not be verified at colliders. Instead, we explore the feasability and usefulness of parametrising the high-energy tail of distributions at the LHC using form factors. We focus on the process pp -> l+l- in the presence of t (or s)-channel New Physics, guess a form factor from the partonic cross-section, and attempt to use data to constrain its coefficients, and the coefficients to constrain models. We find that our choice of form factor decribes t-channel exchange better than a contact interaction, and the coefficients in a particular model can be obtained from the partonic cross-section. We estimate bounds on the coefficients by fitting the form factors to available data. For the parametrisation corresponding to the contact interaction approximation, our expected bounds on the scale $Λ$ are within ~ 15% of the latest limits from the LHC experiments.

The recent LHCb angular analysis of the exclusive decay B->K^*mu+mu- has indicated significant deviations from the Standard Model expectations. Accurate predictions can be achieved at large K*-meson recoil for an optimised set of observables designed to have no sensitivity to hadronic input in the heavy-quark limit at leading order in alpha_s. However, hadronic uncertainties reappear through non-perturbative Lambda_QCD/m_b power corrections, which must be assessed precisely. In the framework of QCD factorisation we present a systematic method to include factorisable power corrections and point out that their impact on angular observables depends on the scheme chosen to define the soft form factors. Associated uncertainties are found to be under control, contrary to earlier claims in the literature. We also discuss the impact of possible non-factorisable power corrections, including an estimate of charm-loop effects. We provide results for angular observables at large recoil for two different sets of inputs for the form factors, spelling out the different sources of theoretical uncertainties. Finally, we comment on a recent proposal to explain the anomaly in B->K*mu+mu- observables through charm-resonance effects, and we propose strategies to test this proposal identifying observables and kinematic regions where either the charm-loop model can be disentangled from New Physics effects or the two options leave different imprints.

We consider the evaluation of the $ηπ$ isospin-violating vector and scalar form factors relying on a systematic application of analyticity and unitarity, combined with chiral expansion results. It is argued that the usual analyticity properties do hold (i.e. no anomalous thresholds are present) in spite of the instability of the $η$ meson in QCD. Unitarity relates the vector form factor to the $ηπ\to ππ$ amplitude: we exploit progress in formulating and solving the Khuri-Treiman equations for $η\to 3π$ and in experimental measurements of the Dalitz plot parameters to evaluate the shape of the $ρ$-meson peak. Observing this peak in the energy distribution of the $τ\to ηπν$ decay would be a background-free signature of a second-class amplitude. The scalar form factor is also estimated from a phase dispersive representation using a plausible model for the $ηπ$ elastic scattering $S$-wave phase shift and a sum rule constraint in the inelastic region. We indicate how a possibly exotic nature of the $a_0(980)$ scalar meson manifests itself in a dispersive approach. A remark is finally made on a second-class amplitude in the $τ\toππν$ decay.

Contact interactions are the low-energy footprints of New Physics, so ideally, constraints upon them should be as generic and model independent as possible. Hadron colliders search for four-quark contact interactions with incident valence quarks, and the LHC currently sets limits on a flavour sum (over uu,dd and ud) of selected interactions. We approximately translate these bounds to a more complete (and larger) set of dimension-six interactions of specified flavours. These estimates are obtained at the parton level, are mostly analytic and are less restrictive than the experimental bounds on flavour-summed interactions. The estimates may scale in a simple way to higher energy and luminosity.

We discuss the impact of recent LHCb data on the B -> K* mu+mu- decay for New Physics searches. We use an optimised set of observables with a limited sensitivity to hadronic inputs (form factors), leading to a significant deviation from the Standard Model for the semileptonic operator O9. We ascertain the robustness of our results with respect to models of power corrections, charm-loop effects, factorisation approaches, possible effects from resonance tails at low-recoil, choice of observables and binnings. We explain some contradictory results obtained for the chirality-flipped operator O9prime by different analyses by focusing on the sensitivity of observables at low recoil afflicted by the psi(4160) and possibly other resonances for B+-> K+ mu+mu- and illustrating the need for a finely binned analysis at large recoil (rather than a wide [1-6] bin). Finally, we present updated results including experimental correlations in B -> K* mu+ mu- observables, confirming the deviation seen with respect to the SM hypothesis (4.2 sigma for large-recoil data, 3.5 sigma for large- and low-recoil data).

We find that current limits on new physics contributions in both B_{d,s} systems can be improved by a factor of ~5 for all values of the CP violating phases, corresponding to over a factor of 2 increase in the scale of new physics probed. Assuming the same suppressions by CKM matrix elements as those of the standard model box diagrams, the scale probed will be about 20 TeV for tree-level new physics contributions, and about 2 TeV for new physics arising at one-loop. We also explore the future sensitivity to new physics in K mixing. Implications for generic new physics and for various specific scenarios, such as minimal flavor violation, light third-generation dominated flavor violation, or U(2) flavor models are studied.

We present a global analysis of the B->K*(->K pi)mu+mu- decay using the recent LHCb measurements of the primary observables P_{1,2} and P'_{4,5,6,8}. Some of them exhibit large deviations with respect to the SM predictions. We explain the observed pattern of deviations through a large New Physics contribution to the Wilson coefficient of the semileptonic operator O9. This contribution has an opposite sign to the SM one, i.e., reduces the size of this coefficient significantly. A good description of data is achieved by allowing for New Physics contributions to the Wilson coefficients C7 and C9 only. We find a 4.5 sigma deviation with respect to the SM prediction, combining the large-recoil B->K*(->K pi)mu+mu- observables with other radiative processes. Once low-recoil observables are included the significance gets reduced to 3.9 sigma. We have tested different sources of systematics, none of them modifying our conclusions significantly. Finally, we propose additional ways of measuring the primary observables through new foldings.

Isospin breaking in the Kl4 form factors induced by the difference between charged and neutral pion masses is studied. Starting from suitably subtracted dispersion representations, the form factors are constructed in an iterative way up to two loops in the low-energy expansion by implementing analyticity, crossing, and unitarity due to two-meson intermediate states. Analytical expressions for the phases of the two-loop form factors of the K\pm -> pi^+ pi^- e^\pm nu_e channel are given, allowing one to connect the difference of form-factor phase shifts measured experimentally (out of the isospin limit) and the difference of S- and P-wave pi-pi phase shifts studied theoretically (in the isospin limit). The isospin-breaking correction consists of the sum of a universal part, involving only pi-pi rescattering, and a process-dependent contribution, involving the form factors in the coupled channels. The dependence on the two S-wave scattering lengths a_0^0 and a_0^2 in the isospin limit is worked out in a general way, in contrast to previous analyses based on one-loop chiral perturbation theory. The latter is used only to assess the subtraction constants involved in the dispersive approach. The two-loop universal and process-dependent contributions are estimated and cancel partially to yield an isospin-breaking correction close to the one-loop case. The recent results on the phases of K^\pm -> pi^+ pi^- e^\pm nu_e form factors obtained by the NA48/2 collaboration at the CERN SPS are reanalysed including this isospin-breaking correction to extract values for the scattering lengths a_0^0 and a_0^2, as well as for low-energy constants and order parameters of two-flavour ChPT.

The first two non-trivial moments of the distribution of the topological charge (or gluonic winding number), i.e., the topological susceptibility and the fourth cumulant, can be computed in lattice QCD simulations and exploited to constrain the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking. We compute these two topological observables at next-to-leading order in three-flavour Chiral Perturbation Theory, and we discuss the role played by the eta propagation in these expressions. For hierarchies of light-quark masses close to the physical situation, we show that the fourth cumulant has a much better sensitivity than the topological susceptibility to the three-flavour quark condensate, and thus constitutes a relevant tool to determine the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking in the limit of three massless flavours. We provide the complete formulae for the two topological observables in the isospin limit, and predict their values in the particular setting of the recent analysis of the RBC/UKQCD collaboration. We show that a combination of the topological susceptibility and the fourth cumulant is able to pin down the three-flavour condensate in a particularly clean way in the case of three degenerate quarks.

The first results from LHCb have made a significant impact on the flavour physics landscape and have definitively proved the concept of a dedicated experiment in the forward region at a hadron collider. This document discusses the implications of these first measurements on classes of extensions to the Standard Model, bearing in mind the interplay with the results of searches for on-shell production of new particles at ATLAS and CMS. The physics potential of an upgrade to the LHCb detector, which would allow an order of magnitude more data to be collected, is emphasised.

We perform a frequentist analysis of q^2-dependent B-> K*(->Kpi)ll angular observables at large recoil, aiming at bridging the gap between current theoretical analyses and the actual experimental measurements. We focus on the most appropriate set of observables to measure and on the role of the q^2-binning. We highlight the importance of the observables P_i exhibiting a limited sensitivity to soft form factors for the search for New Physics contributions. We compute predictions for these binned observables in the Standard Model, and we compare them with their experimental determination extracted from recent LHCb data. Analyzing b->s and b->sll transitions within four different New Physics scenarios, we identify several New Physics benchmark points which can be discriminated through the measurement of P_i observables with a fine q^2-binning. We emphasise the importance (and risks) of using observables with (un)suppressed dependence on soft form factors for the search of New Physics, which we illustrate by the different size of hadronic uncertainties attached to two related observables (P_1 and S_3). We illustrate how the q^2-dependent angular observables measured in several bins can help to unravel New Physics contributions to B-> K*(->Kpi)ll, and show the extraordinary constraining power that the clean observables will have in the near future. We provide semi-numerical expressions for these observables as functions of the relevant Wilson coefficients at the low scale.

We reanalyse the topological susceptibility assuming the possibility of a significant paramagnetic suppression of the three-flavour quark condensate and a correlated enhancement of vacuum fluctuations of $s\bar{s}$ pairs. Using the framework of resummed ChPT, we point out that simulations performed near the physical point, with a significant mass hierarchy between u,d and s dynamical quarks, are not able to disentangle the contributions from the quark condensate and sea $s\bar{s}$-pair fluctuations, and that simulations with three light quark masses of the same order are better suited for this purpose. We perform a combined fit of recent RBC/UKQCD data on pseudoscalar masses and decay constants as well as the topological susceptibility, and we reconsider the determination of lattice spacings in our framework, working out the consequences on the parameters of the chiral Lagrangian. We obtain Sigma(3;2 GeV)^1/3=243 \pm 12 MeV for the three-flavour quark condensate in the chiral limit. We notice a significant suppression compared to the two-flavour quark condensate Sigma(2;2 GeV)/Sigma(3;2 GeV)=1.51\pm 0.11 and we confirm previous findings of a competition between leading order and next-to-leading order contributions in three-flavour chiral series.

We perform model-independent statistical analyses of three scenarios accommodating New Physics (NP) in Delta F=2 flavour-changing neutral current amplitudes. In a scenario in which NP in B_d-B_d-bar and B_s-B_s-bar is uncorrelated, we find the parameter point representing the Standard-Model disfavoured by 2.4 standard deviations. However, recent LHCb data on B_s neutral-meson mixing forbid a good accommodation of the D0 data on the semileptonic CP asymmetry A_SL. We discuss the viability of this possibility and emphasise the importance of separate measurements of the CP asymmetries in semileptonic B_d and B_s decays. All results have been obtained with the CKMfitter analysis package, featuring the frequentist statistical approach and using Rfit to handle theoretical uncertainties.

Dispersive representations of the pi-pi scattering amplitudes and pion form factors, valid at two-loop accuracy in the low-energy expansion, are constructed in the presence of isospin-breaking effects induced by the difference between the charged and neutral pion masses. Analytical expressions for the corresponding phases of the scalar and vector pion form factors are computed. It is shown that each of these phases consists of the sum of a "universal" part and a form-factor dependent contribution. The first one is entirely determined in terms of the pi-pi scattering amplitudes alone, and reduces to the phase satisfying Watson's theorem in the isospin limit. The second one can be sizeable, although it vanishes in the same limit. The dependence of these isospin corrections with respect to the parameters of the subthreshold expansion of the pi-pi amplitude is studied, and an equivalent representation in terms of the S-wave scattering lengths is also briefly presented and discussed. In addition, partially analytical expressions for the two-loop form factors and pi-pi scattering amplitudes in the presence of isospin breaking are provided.

We apply the method to specific penguin-mediated B->PP, B->PV and B ->VV modes. We provide a very stringent and simple bound on the direct CP asymmetries of all these modes, the violation of which is a signal of New Physics in decay. Within the same theoretical framework, an updated prediction for the branching ratio of Bs->K0* anti-K0* is presented, which can be compared with a recent LHCb analysis.

The Wilson coefficient C7 governing the radiative electromagnetic decays of B meson has been calculated to a very high accuracy in the Standard Model, but experimental bounds on either the magnitude or the sign of C7 are often model-dependent. In the present paper, we attempt at constraining both the magnitude and sign of C7 using a systematic approach. We consider already measured observables like the branching ratios of B \rightarrow Xs mu+ mu- and B \rightarrow Xs gamma, the isospin and CP asymmetries in B \rightarrow K* gamma, as well as AFB and FL in B \rightarrow K*l+l-. We also discuss the transverse observable AT2 which, once measured, may help to disentangle some of the scenarios considered. We explore the constraints on C7, C9, C10 as well as their chirality-flipped counterparts. Within our framework, we find that we need to extend the constraints up to 1.6 sigma to allow for the "flipped-sign solution" of C7. The SM solution for C7 exhibits a very mild tension if New Physics is allowed in dipole operators only. We provide semi-numerical expressions for all these observables as functions of the relevant Wilson coefficients at the low scale.

Several lattice collaborations performing simulations with 2+1 light dynamical quarks have experienced difficulties in fitting their data with standard Nf=3 chiral expansions at next-to-leading order, yielding low values of the quark condensate and/or the decay constant in the Nf=3 chiral limit. A reordering of these expansions seems required to analyse these data in a consistent way. We discuss such a reordering, known as Resummed Chiral Perturbation Theory, in the case of pseudoscalar masses and decay constants, pion and kaon electromagnetic form factors and Kl3} form factors. We show that it provides a good fit of the recent results of two lattice collaborations (PACS-CS and RBC/UKQCD). We describe the emerging picture for the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking, marked by a strong dependence of the observables on the strange quark mass and thus a significant difference between chiral symmetry breaking in the Nf=2 and Nf=3 chiral limits. We discuss the consequences for the ratio of decay constants F_K/F_pi and the Kl3 form factor at vanishing momentum transfer.

In pursuit of some insight as to the most sensitive search channels, We assume that the leptoquark-lepton-quark coupling can be constructed from the known mass matrices. We estimate the rates for selected rare processes in three cases: leptoquarks carrying lepton and quark flavour, leptoquarks with quark flavour only, and unflavoured leptoquarks. We find that leptoquark decay to top quarks is an interesting search channel.

We analyse three different New Physics scenarios for Delta F=2 flavour-changing neutral currents in the quark sector in the light of recent data on neutral-meson mixing. We parametrise generic New Physics contributions to B_q-Bbar_q mixing (q=d,s), in terms of one complex quantity Delta_q, while three parameters Delta_K^tt, Delta_K^ct and Delta_K^cc are needed to describe K-Kbar mixing. In Scenario I, we consider uncorrelated New Physics contributions in the B_d, B_s, and K sectors. In this scenario, it is only possible to constrain the parameters Delta_d and Delta_s whereas there are no non-trivial constraints on the kaon parameters. In Scenario II, we study the case of Minimal Flavour Violation (MFV) and small bottom Yukawa coupling and Scenario III is the generic MFV case with large bottom Yukawa couplings. Our quantitative analyses consist of global CKM fits within the Rfit frequentist statistical approach, determining the Standard Model parameters and the new physics parameters of the studied scenarios simultaneously. We find that the recent measurements indicating discrepancies with the Standard Model are well accomodated in Scenarios I and III with new mixing phases, with a slight preference for Scenario I that permits different new CP phases in the B_d and B_s systems. Within our statistical framework, we find evidence of New Physics in both B_d and B_s systems. The Standard-Model hypothesis Delta_d=Delta_s=1 is disfavoured with p-values of 3.6 sigma and 3.3 sigma in Scenarios I and III, respectively. We also present an exhaustive list of numerical predictions in each scenario. In particular, we predict the CP phase in B_s -> J psi phi and the difference between the B_s and B_d semileptonic asymmetries, which will be both measured by the LHCb experiment.

The tau hadronic width provides a determination of the strong coupling constant alpha_s at low energies, since it can be related to a weighted integral of the Adler function in the complex energy plane. Using Operator Product Expansion, one sees that the sensitivity to alpha_s comes from the perturbative contribution, which can be obtained by integrating the perturbative expansion of the Adler function. Two different prescriptions proposed to perform this integral, called Fixed-Order Perturbation Theory and Contour-Improved Perturbation Theory (FOPT and CIPT), yield different results for the strong coupling constant. Recently, models for the Adler function based on renormalon calculus have been proposed to determine which of the two methods is the most accurate, by comparing the resulting asymptotic series with the true value of the integral. We discuss the assumptions of such ansatz and the determination of their free parameters. We show that variations of this renormalon ansatz can yield opposite conclusions concerning the comparison of CIPT versus FOPT, and that such models are not constrained enough to provide a definite answer on this issue or to be exploited for a high-precision determination of alpha_s(m_tau^2).

We discuss tests of the charged Higgs sector of the Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) of Type II in the light of recent flavour physics data. Particular attention is paid to recent measurement of purely leptonic decays of heavy-light mesons, which depart more or less significantly from the Standard Model (SM) predictions. We derive constraints on the parameters of the 2HDM type II from leptonic and semileptonic $ΔF=1$ decays as well as loop processes ($b \to s γ$, $B\bar{B}$ mixing or $Z\to\bar{b}b$) sensitive to charged Higgs contributions.
The outcome of this work is that while 2HDM Type II can fit individual observable through fine-tuning schemes, in a combined analysis it does not perform better than the SM by favouring a decoupling solution. Assuming that 2HDM Type II is realized in Nature, constraints on its parameters ($m_{H^+}$ and $\tan β$) are derived. A limit on the charged Higgs mass $m_{H^+} > 316 \; {\rm GeV}$ at $95\%$~CL is obtained irrespective of the value of $\tan β$. This limit is dominated by the $b\rightarrow s γ$ branching ratio measurement.
All results have been obtained with the \ckmfitter\ analysis package, featuring the frequentist statistical approach \rfit\ to handle theoretical uncertainties.

The vector form factor f_+(t) of the semileptonic decay D -> K l nu, measured recently with a high accuracy, can be used to determine the strong coupling constant g_{D_s^* D K}. The latter is related to the normalised coupling \hat{g} releveant in heavy-meson chiral perturbation theory. This determination relies on the estimation of the residue of the form factor at the D_s^* pole and thus on an extrapolation of the form factor in the unphysical region (m_D-m_K)^2<t<(m_D+m_K)^2. We test this extrapolation for several parametrisations of the form factors by determining the value of \hat{g}, whose value can be compared to other (experimental and theoretical) estimates. Several unsophisticated parametrisations, differing by the amount of physical information that they embed, are shown to pass this test. An apparently more elaborated parametrisation of form factors, the so-called z-expansion, is at variance with the other models, and we point out some significant shortcomings of this parametrisation for the problem under consideration.

We estimate that the fourth-order perturbative prediction reduces the theoretical uncertainty, introduced by the truncation of the series, by 20% with respect to earlier determinations. We discuss to some detail the perturbative prediction and show that the effect of the incomplete knowledge of the series is reduced by using the so-called contour-improved calculation, as opposed to fixed-order perturbation theory which manifests convergence problems. The corresponding theoretical uncertainties are studied at the tau and Z mass scales. Nonperturbative contributions extracted from the most inclusive fit are small, in agreement with earlier determinations. Systematic effects from quark-hadron duality violation are estimated with simple models and found to be within the quoted systematic errors. The fit gives alpha_s(m_tau) = 0.344 +- 0.005 +- 0.007, where the first error is experimental and the second theoretical. After evolution to M_Z we obtain alpha_s(M_Z) = 0.1212 +- 0.0005 +- 0.0008 +- 0.0005, where the errors are respectively experimental, theoretical and due to the evolution. The result is in agreement with the corresponding NNNLO value derived from essentially the Z width in the global electroweak fit. The alpha_s(M_Z) determination from tau decays is the most precise one to date.

With the advent of the LHC, we will be able to probe New Physics (NP) up to energy scales almost one order of magnitude larger than it has been possible with present accelerator facilities. While direct detection of new particles will be the main avenue to establish the presence of NP at the LHC, indirect searches will provide precious complementary information, since most probably it will not be possible to measure the full spectrum of new particles and their couplings through direct production. In particular, precision measurements and computations in the realm of flavour physics are expected to play a key role in constraining the unknown parameters of the Lagrangian of any NP model emerging from direct searches at the LHC. The aim of Working Group 2 was twofold: on one hand, to provide a coherent, up-to-date picture of the status of flavour physics before the start of the LHC; on the other hand, to initiate activities on the path towards integrating information on NP from high-pT and flavour data.

The (light but not-so-light) strange quark may play a special role in the low-energy dynamics of QCD. The presence of strange quark pairs in the sea may have a significant impact of the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking : in particular large differences can occur between the chiral limits of two and three massless flavours (i.e., whether m_s is kept at its physical value or sent to zero). This may induce problems of convergence in three-flavour chiral expansions. To cope with such difficulties, we introduce a new framework, called Resummed Chiral Perturbation Theory. We exploit it to analyse pi-pi and pi-K scatterings and match them with dispersive results in a frequentist framework. Constraints on three-flavour chiral order parameters are derived.

We recall some indications of such a scenario in QCD, in relation with the peculiar dynamics of the scalar sector. We explain how this could affect the convergence of three-flavour chiral series, commonly used to extrapolate the results of lattice simulations. Finally, we indicate how lattice simulations with three dynamical flavours could unveil such an effect through the quark-mass dependence of light meson masses and decay constants.

Low-energy pi-pi and pi-K scatterings revisited in three-flavour resummed chiral perturbation theory

Chiral symmetry breaking may exhibit significantly different patterns in two chiral limits: N_f=2 massless flavours (m_u=m_d=0, m_s physical) and N_f=3 massless flavours (m_u=m_d=0=m_s=0). Such a difference may arise due to vacuum fluctuations of s-bar{s} pairs related to the violation of the Zweig rule in the scalar sector, and could yield a numerical competition between contributions counted as leading order and next-to-leading in the chiral expansions of observables. We recall and extend Resummed Chiral Perturbation Theory (ReChPT), a framework that we introduced previously to deal with such instabilities: it requires a more careful definition of the relevant observables and their one-loop chiral expansions. We analyse the amplitudes for low-energy pi-pi and pi-K scatterings within ReChPT, which we match in subthreshold regions with dispersive representations obtained from the solutions Roy and Roy-Steiner equations. Using a frequentist approach, we constrain the quark mass ratio as well as the quark condensate and the pseudoscalar decay constant in the N_f=3 chiral limit. The results mildly favour significant contributions of vacuum fluctuations suppressing the N_f=3 quark condensate compared to its N_f=2 counterpart.

We discuss the existence of the light scalar meson K^*_0(800) (also called kappa) in a rigorous way, by showing the presence of a pole in the pi K --> pi K amplitude on the second Riemann sheet. For this purpose, we study the domain of validity of two classes of Roy-Steiner representations in the complex energy plane. We prove that one of them is valid in a region sufficiently broad in the imaginary direction. From this representation, we compute the l=0 partial wave in the complex plane with neither additional approximation nor model dependence, relying only on experimental data. A scalar resonance with strangeness S=1 is found with the following mass and width: E_kappa = 658 \pm 13 MeV and Gamma_kappa = 557 \pm 24 MeV.

We focus on the chiral Lagrangian couplings describing radiative corrections to weak semi-leptonic decays and relate them to the decay amplitude of a lepton, computed by Braaten and Li at one loop in the Standard Model. For this purpose, we follow a two-step procedure. A first matching, from the Standard Model to Fermi theory, yields a relevant set of counterterms. The latter are related to chiral couplings thanks to a second matching, from Fermi theory to the chiral Lagrangian, which is performed using the spurion method. We show that the chiral couplings of physical relevance obey integral representations in a closed form, expressed in terms of QCD chiral correlators and vertex functions. We deduce exact relations among the couplings, as well as numerical estimates which go beyond the usual $\log(M\_Z/M\_ρ)$ approximation.
