We study the penguin-mediated decays $\bar{B}_{d(s)}\to\bar{K}^{*0}(K^{*0})φ$ transitions. We propose a new optimised observable $L_{K^*φ}$ from the ratio of longitudinal branching ratios of these decays, with limited hadronic uncertainties and enhanced sensitivity to New Physics. It exhibits a deviation at the $1.48\, σ$ level between its experimental value and its SM determination within QCD factorisation. This result can be accommodated together with the significant deviations found for the $K^{(*)}\bar{K}^{(*)}$ modes in our earlier works, if New Physics affects either the QCD penguin operator $Q_4$ or the chromomagnetic dipole operator $Q_{8g}$ for both $b\to d$ and $b\to s$ transitions. The allowed range for the Wilson coefficients $C_{4s,8gs}$ is narrower compared to $C_{4d,8gd}$ since the $b\to s$ transition $\bar{B}_d\to\bar{K}^{*0}φ$ is in better agreement with the SM. If we add the measured branching ratio for the $\bar{B}_{d}\to \bar{K}^{0}φ$ to our analysis, the simultaneous explanation of all the experimental data for the $K^{(*)}\bar{K}^{(*)}$ and the $K^*(\bar{K}^{(*)})φ$ channels in terms of New Physics in $C_{4d,s}$ or $C_{8gd,s}$ operators only becomes very constrained. This set of observables can be explained more easily if we assume New Physics either in $(C_{4f},C_{6f})$ or $(C_{6f},C_{8gf})$ in both $f=d,s$. This should provide a strong incentive for the LHCb experiment to perform a measurement of the branching ratios of $\bar{B}_{d}\to\bar{K}^{(*)0}φ$ and an improved measurement for the branching ratio of $\bar{B}_s\to K^{*0}φ$.

A system of dispersive representations of the Omnès-Khuri-Treiman-Sawyer-Wali type for the final-state interactions in the amplitudes of the $K\toπππ$ weak transitions is constructed, under the assumptions that CP and isospin symmetries are conserved. Both the $ΔI = 1/2$ and $ΔI = 3/2$ transition channels are considered. The set of single-variable functions involved in these representations is identified, and the polynomial ambiguities in their definitions are discussed. Numerical solutions for the system of coupled integral relations satisfied by these functions are provided, and the determination of the subtraction constants in terms of the experimental information on the amplitudes in the decay region is addressed.

These observables are substantially cleaner than the corresponding branching ratios, which are plagued by large end point divergences. We find that the dominant contribution to the uncertainties of these observables stem from the corresponding form factors. The Standard Model estimates for these observables corresponding to the $K^{*0}\bar{K}^{*0}$ and $K^0\bar{K}^0$ final states are in tension with their respective experimental numbers at the $\sim2.5 σ$ level. The pattern of deviations w.r.t these observables as well as the individual branching ratios suggest that a possible explanation might be new physics both in $b\to s$ and $b\to d$ transitions. We find that, taken one at a time, only the Wilson coefficients $C_{4d,s}^{NP}$ and $C_{8gd,s}^{NP}$ can potentially satisfy all the current experimental data on the branching ratios as well as the optimized observables. Furthermore, such observables involving mixed (pseudoscalar-vector) states like $K^{*0}\bar{K}^0$ etc show distinctive patterns sensitive to these different new physics explanations.

We discuss the impact of the recent LHCb update on the two lepton-flavour universality ratios $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$, and the CMS update of $B({B_s \to μ^+μ^-})$ regarding the possibility of New Physics in $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$ decays. We perform global fits of the New Physics Wilson coefficients defined in the model-independent approach of the Weak Effective Theory at the $b$-quark mass. We discuss three different frameworks for this analysis: i) an update limited to the experimental data using the same theoretical framework as in earlier works, ii) a full update concerning both the experimental inputs and the theoretical framework, iii) an analysis without the LHCb results on electron modes. The comparison between these sets of results allows us to identify the differences stemming from the various components of the analysis: new experimental results, new inputs for the hadronic form factors, the role played by LHCb data on electron modes. As expected, the significance of all New Physics hypotheses gets reduced after the LHCb announcements on $R_{K^{(\ast)}}$ while the hypothesis of a lepton-flavour-universal contribution to the Wilson coefficient of the semileptonic $O_{9\ell}$ operators (possibly with a very small lepton-flavour-universality violating component) is reinforced. We also discuss the possibility of a long-distance charm-loop contribution through a mode-by-mode analysis and we find that the preferred values for the $\mathcal{C}_{9μ}$ Wilson coefficient are consistent throughout the different $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ modes and that there is no significant evidence of non-constant $q^2$ dependencies, which would indicate the presence of a long-distance charm-loop contribution beyond those already included.

We derive a set of light-cone sum rules relating the $S$-wave $B\to K π$ hadronic form factors to the $B$-meson light-cone distribution amplitudes (LCDAs), taking into account the complete set of LCDAs up to and including twist four. These results complement the sum rules for the $P$-wave $B\to K π$ form factors obtained earlier. We then use the new sum rules to estimate the $S$-wave contributions to $B\to K π\ell\ell$ decays as a function of the $Kπ$ invariant mass. We pay particular attention to the fact that the $S$-wave $Kπ$ spectrum cannot be modelled by a sum of Breit-Wigner resonances, and employ a more consistent dispersive coupled-channel approach. We compare our predictions for branching ratios and angular observables with LHCb measurements in two different kinematic regions, around $K^*(892)$ and $K^*_0(1430)$. We observe an overall compatibility and discuss possible improvements of our model to obtain a better description of the $B\to Kπ$ form factors over a large kinematic range.

In this letter, we use LHC data from the Drell-Yan processes $pp\to\ell_i\ell_j$ (with $i\neq j$) to derive model-independent upper limits on lepton-flavor-violating meson decays. Our analysis is based on an Effective Field Theory (EFT) approach and it does not require a specific assumption regarding the basis of effective operators. We find that current LHC data (140~$\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$) already provides competitive limits on $B(B\to πe τ)$ and $B(B\to πμτ)$ with respect to the ones obtained through experimental searches at the $B$-factories. Moreover, we derive upper limits on several decays that have not been searched for experimentally yet, such as $D^0\to eτ$ in the charm sector, and various semileptonic decays such as $B\to ρμτ$, $B_s\to K μτ$ and $B_s\toφμτ$. Lastly, we discuss the validity of the EFT description of LHC data and the impact of loop corrections in our analysis.

We build a set of new observables using closely related non-leptonic penguin-mediated $B_d$ and $B_s$ decays: ${\bar B}_{d,s}\to K^{*0}\bar{K}^{*0}$, ${\bar B}_{d,s}\to K^{0}\bar{K}^{0}$, ${\bar B}_{d,s}\to K^{0}\bar{K}^{*0}$ and ${\bar B}_{d,s}\to\bar{K}^{0}{K^{*0}}$ together with their CP conjugate partners. These optimised observables are designed to reduce hadronic uncertainties, mainly coming from form factors and power-suppressed infrared divergences, and thus maximize their sensitivity to New Physics (NP). The deviations observed with respect to the SM in the ratios of branching ratios of ${\bar B}_{d,s}\to K^{*0}\bar{K}^{*0}$ ($2.6σ$) and ${\bar B}_{d,s}\to K^{0}\bar{K}^{0}$ ($2.4σ$) can be explained by simple NP scenarios involving the Wilson coefficients ${\cal C}_4$ and ${\cal C}_6$ (QCD penguin operators) and the coefficient ${\cal C}_{8g}$ (chromomagnetic operator). The optimised observables for ${\bar B}_{d,s}\to K^{0}\bar{K}^{*0}$ and ${\bar B}_{d,s}\to\bar{K}^{0}{K^{*0}}$ show distinctive patterns of deviations with respect to their SM predictions under these NP scenarios. The pattern of deviations of individual branching ratios, though affected by significant hadronic uncertainties, suggests that NP is needed both in $b\to d$ and $b\to s$ transitions. We provide the regions for the Wilson coefficients consistent with both optimised observables and individual branching ratios. The NP scenarios considered to explain the deviations of ${\bar B}_{d,s}\to K^{*0}\bar{K}^{*0}$ and ${\bar B}_{d,s}\to K^{0}\bar{K}^{0}$ can yield deviations up to an order of magnitude among the observables that we introduced for ${\bar B}_{d,s} \to K^{0} \bar{K}^{*0}$ and ${\bar B}_{d,s}\to\bar{K}^{0} {K^{*0}}$. Probing these new observables experimentally may confirm the consistency of the deviations already observed and provide a highly valuable hint of NP in the non-leptonic sector.

Decays based on the $b\to sγ$ transition are expected to yield left-handed photons in the Standard Model, but could be particularly sensitive to New Physics contributions modifying the short-distance Wilson coefficients $\mathcal{C}_7$ and $\mathcal{C}_{7'}$ defined in the low-energy Effective Field Theory. These coefficients can be determined by combining observables of several modes, among which $B_s\toφee$ at low $q^2$, in a kinematic range where the photon-pole is dominant. We investigate the impact of $B_s-\bar{B}_s$ mixing on the angular observables available for this mode, which induces a time-dependent modulation governed by interference terms between mixing and decay that are sensitive to the moduli and phases of $\mathcal{C}_7$ and $\mathcal{C}_{7'}$. These interference terms can be extracted through a time-dependent analysis but they also affect time-integrated observables. In particular, we show that the asymmetries $A_T^{(2)}$ and $A_T^{(\text{Im});CP}$ receive terms of potentially similar size from mixing-independent and mixing-induced terms, and we discuss how the constraints coming from the angular analysis of $B_s\toφee$ at low $q^2$ should be interpreted in the presence of mixing.

The physics potential of measuring $B^0_{(s)}\toπ^0π^0$ and $B^0_{(s)}\toηη$ decays via four-photon final states at Tera-$Z$ phase of CEPC or FCC-ee is investigated in this paper. We propose an electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) with both high energy resolution and excellent separation power to efficiently reconstruct $π^0$ and $η$ from hadronic final states with high photon multiplicity. The resulting $B$-meson mass resolution is approximately 30 MeV, allowing 3 $σ$ separation between $B^0$ and $B_s^0$. With the assistance of the $b$-jet tagging, the relative sensitivities to $B^0\toπ^0π^0$, $B^0_s\toπ^0π^0$, $B^0\toηη$, and $B^0_s\toηη$ signal strengths at Tera-$Z$ are projected as 0.45%, 4.5%, 18%, and 0.95%, respectively. Their dependence on various detector performances is also discussed. In addition, $B^0\toπ^0π^0$ and its two isospin-related modes are paid special attention due to their roles in the determination of the CKM angle $α$ ($φ_2$). The anticipated precisions of their branching-ratio and $CP$-asymmetry measurements at Tera-$Z$ are evaluated. We show that the measurement of the time-integrated $B^0\toπ^0π^0$ $CP$ asymmetry at Tera-$Z$ is complementary to $B$-factory ones. The precision on $α$ combining $Z$- and $B$-factory results reaches $0.4^\circ$, lower than the systematic uncertainties attached to isospin breaking.

First, the presence of right-handed couplings encoded in the Wilson coefficients $\mathcal{C}_{9'μ}$ and $\mathcal{C}_{10'μ}$ remains a viable possibility. Second, a lepton flavour universality violating (LFUV) left-handed lepton coupling ($\mathcal{C}_{9μ}^{\rm V}=-\mathcal{C}_{10μ}^{\rm V}$), often preferred from the model building point of view, accommodates the data better if lepton-flavour universal New Physics is allowed, in particular in $\mathcal{C}_{9}^{\rm U}$. This observable is cleaner than the longitudinal polarisation fraction as it is afflicted only at subleading order in a $1/m_b$ expansion by the theoretical uncertainties arising in the transverse components entering the polarisation fraction. Focusing on the particular case of $B_{d}\to K^{*0}\bar{K}^{*0}$ and $B_{s}\to K^{*0}\bar{K}^{*0}$, we discuss the main sources of hadronic uncertainty in the SM. We find for the SM prediction $L_{K^*\bar{K}^*}=19.5^{+9.3}_{-6.8}$, which implies a $2.6σ$ tension with respect to the most recent data, pointing to a deficit in the $b \to s$ transition of the non-leptonic decay versus the corresponding $b \to d$ transition. We discuss possible New Physics explanations for this deviation, first at the level of the Weak Effective Theory and we identify that the two Wilson coefficients ${\cal C}_{4}$ and ${\cal C}_{8g}$ can play a central role in explaining this anomaly. We discuss the angular conventions required to define the angular observables in a transparent way with respect to CP conjugation. The inclusion of time evolution allows us to identify six new observables, out of which three could be accessed from a time-dependent tagged analysis. We also show that these observables could be obtained by time-integrated measurements in a hadronic environment if flavour tagging is available. We provide simple and precise predictions for these observables in the SM and in NP models with real contributions to SM and chirally flipped operators, which are independent of form factors and charm-loop contributions. As such, these observables provide robust and powerful cross-checks of the New Physics scenarios currently favoured by global fits to $b\to s\ell\ell$ data. In addition, we discuss the sensitivity of these observables with respect to NP scenarios involving scalar and tensor operators, or CP-violating phases. We illustrate how these new observables can provide a benchmark to discriminate among the various NP scenarios in $b\to sμμ$. We discuss the extension of these results for $B_s$ decays into $f_0$, $η$ or $η'$.

The mixing of neutral mesons is sensitive to some of the highest scales probed in laboratory experiments. In light of the planned LHCb Upgrade II, a possible upgrade of Belle II, and the broad interest in flavor physics in the tera-$Z$ phase of the proposed FCC-ee program, we study constraints on new physics contributions to $B_d$ and $B_s$ mixings which can be obtained in these benchmark scenarios. We explore the limitations of this program, and identify the measurement of $|V_{cb}|$ as one of the key ingredients in which progress beyond current expectations is necessary to maximize future sensitivity. We speculate on possible solutions to this bottleneck. Given the current tension with the standard model (SM) in semileptonic $B$ decays, we explore how its resolution may impact the search for new physics in mixing. Even if new physics has the same CKM and loop suppressions of flavor changing processes as the SM, the sensitivity will reach 2 TeV, and it can be much higher if any SM suppressions are lifted. We illustrate the discovery potential of this program.

Using the expected yield in the current dataset collected at the LHCb experiment, as well as the foreseen ones after the LHCb upgrades, sensitivity studies are presented to determine the experimental precision on angular observables related to the lepton distribution and their potential to identify New Physics. The forward-backward lepton asymmetry at low dilepton invariant mass is particularly promising. NP scenarios favoured by the current anomalies in $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$ decays can be distinguished from the SM case with the data collected between the Run 3 and the Upgrade 2 of the LHCb experiment.

We apply the formalism of amplitude symmetries to the angular distribution of the decays $B \to D^* \ell ν$ for $\ell=e,μ,τ$. We show that the angular observables used to describe the distribution of this class of decays are not independent in absence of New Physics contributing to tensor operators. We derive sets of relations among the angular coefficients of the decay distribution for the massless and massive lepton cases which can be used to probe in a very general way the consistency among the angular observables and the underlying New Physics at work. We use these relations to access the longitudinal polarisation fraction of the $D^*$ using different angular coefficients from the ones used by Belle experiment. This in the near future can provide an alternative strategy to measure $F_L^{D^*}$ in $B \to D^* τν$ and to understand the relatively high value measured by the Belle experiment. Using the same symmetries, we identify three observables which may exhibit a tension if the experimental value of $F_L^{D^*}$ remains high. We discuss how these relations can be exploited for binned measurements. We also propose a new observable that could test for specific scenarios of New Physics generated by light right-handed neutrinos. Finally we study the prospects of testing these relations based on the projected experimental sensitivity of new experiments.

We consider a left-right symmetric extension of the Standard Model where the spontaneous breakdown of the left-right symmetry is triggered by doublets. The electroweak $ρ$ parameter is protected from large corrections in this Doublet Left-Right Model (DLRM), contrary to the triplet case. This allows in principle for more diverse patterns of symmetry breaking. We consider several constraints on the gauge and scalar sectors of DLRM: the unitarity of scattering processes involving gauge bosons with longitudinal polarisations, the radiative corrections to the muon $Δr$ parameter and the electroweak precision observables measured at the $Z$ pole and at low energies. Combining these constraints within the frequentist CKMfitter approach, we see that the fit pushes the scale of left-right symmetry breaking up to a few TeV, while favouring an electroweak symmetry breaking triggered not only by the $ SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R $ bi-doublet, which is the case most commonly considered in the literature, but also by the $ SU(2)_L $ doublet.

We derive a set of light-cone sum rules relating the hadronic form factors relevant for $B\to Kπ\ell^+\ell^-$ decays to the $B$-meson light-cone distribution amplitudes (LCDAs). We obtain the sum rule relations for all $B\to Kπ$ form factors of (axial)vector and (pseudo)tensor $b\to s$ currents with a $P$-wave $Kπ$ system. Our results reduce to the known light-cone sum rules for $B\to K^*$ form factors in the limit of a single narrow-width resonance. We update the operator-product expansion for the underlying correlation function by including a more complete set of $B$-meson LCDAs with higher twists, and produce numerical results for all $B\to K^*$ form factors in the narrow-width limit. We then use the new sum rules to estimate the effect of a non-vanishing $K^*$ width in $B\to K^*$ transitions, and find that this effect is universal and increases the factorizable part of the rate of $B\to K^*X$ decays by a factor of $20\%$. This effect, by itself, goes in the direction of increasing the current tension in the differential $B\to K^*μμ$ branching fractions. We also discuss $B\to Kπ$ transitions outside the $K^*$ window, and explain how measurements of $B\to Kπ\ell\ell$ observables above the $K^*$ region can be used to further constrain the $B\to K^*$ form factors.

We perform a model-independent global fit to $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$ observables to confirm existing New Physics (NP) patterns (or scenarios) and to identify new ones emerging from the inclusion of the updated LHCb and Belle measurements of $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$, respectively. Our analysis, updating Refs. [1,2] and including these new data, suggests the presence of right-handed couplings encoded in the Wilson coefficients ${\cal C}_{9'μ}$ and ${\cal C}_{10'μ}$. It also strengthens our earlier observation that a lepton flavour universality violating (LFUV) left-handed lepton coupling (${\cal C}_{9μ}^{\rm V}=-{\cal C}_{10μ}^{\rm V}$), often preferred from the model building point of view, accommodates the data better if lepton-flavour universal (LFU) NP is allowed, in particular in ${\cal C}_{9}^{\rm U}$. Furthermore, this scenario with LFU NP provides a simple and model-independent connection to the $b\to cτν$ anomalies, showing a preference of $\approx 7\,σ$ with respect to the SM. It may also explain why fits to the whole set of $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$ data or to the subset of LFUV data exhibit stronger preferences for different NP scenarios. Finally, motivated by $Z^\prime$ models with vector-like quarks, we propose four new scenarios with LFU and LFUV NP contributions that give a very good fit to data. We provide also an addendum collecting our updated results after including the data for the $B\to K^*μμ$ angular distribution released in 2020 by the LHCb collaboration.

We provide a determination of the complete angular distribution, assuming unpolarised $Λ_b$ baryons and neglecting the lepton mass. The resulting angular observables are expressed in terms of helicity amplitudes involving hadronic form factors within the Standard Model and New physics models with chirality-flipped operators. We study these observables at low and large $Λ$ recoils, using effective theories to determine relations among the hadronic form factors involved. As there is currently no determination of the form factors available from lattice simulations or light-cone sum rules, we perform a first illustration of the sensitivity of some observables to New Physics contributions using hadronic inputs from quark models.

The deviations with respect to the Standard Model that are currently observed in $b \to s \ell\ell$ transitions, or $B$ anomalies, can be interpreted in terms of different New Physics (NP) scenarios within a model-independent effective approach. We identify a set of internal tensions of the fit that require further attention and whose theoretical or experimental nature could be determined with more data. In this landscape of NP, we discuss possible ways to discriminate among favoured NP hypotheses in the short term thanks to current and forthcoming observables. While an update of $R_K$ should help to disentangle the type of NP we may be observing (Lepton-Flavour Universality Violating and/or Lepton Flavour Universal), additional observables, in particular $Q_5$, turn out to be central to determine which NP hypothesis should be preferred. We also analyse the preferences shown by the current global fit concerning various NP hypotheses, using two different tools: the behaviour of the pulls of individual observables under NP scenarios and the directions favoured by approximate quadratic parametrisations of the observables in terms of Wilson coefficients.

We provide a general roadmap to take this into account, which we apply to the case of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We choose a set of four input observables that determine the four Wolfenstein parameters, and discuss how the effects of dimension-six operators can be included in their definition. We provide numerical values and confidence intervals for the CKM parameters, and compare them with the results of CKM fits obtained in the SM context. Our approach allows one to perform general SMEFT analyses in a consistent fashion, independently of any assumptions about the way new physics affects flavour observables. We discuss a few examples illustrating how our approach can be implemented in practice.

The deviations with respect to the Standard Model (SM) that are currently observed in $b \to s \ell\ell$ transitions (the so-called flavour anomalies) can be interpreted in terms of different New Physics (NP) scenarios within a model-independent effective approach. We reconsider the determination of NP in global fits from a different perspective by removing one implicit hypothesis of current analyses, namely that NP is only Lepton-Flavour Universality Violating (LFUV). We examine the roles played by LFUV NP and Lepton-Flavour Universal (LFU) NP altogether, providing new directions to identify the possible theory beyond the SM responsible for the anomalies observed. New patterns of NP emerge due to the possibility of allowing at the same time large LFUV and LFU NP contributions to $C_{10μ}$, which provides a different mechanism to obey the constraint from the $B_s \toμ^+μ^-$ branching ratio. In this landscape of NP, we discuss how to discriminate among these scenarios in the short term thanks to current and forthcoming observables. While the update of $R_K$ will be a major milestone to confirm the NP origin of the flavour anomalies, additional observables, in particular the LFUV angular observable $Q_5$, turn out to be central to assess the precise NP scenario responsible for the observed anomalies.

LHCb has reported deviations from the Standard Model (SM) expectations in $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ processes as well as in the ratios $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$, which together point at New Physics (NP) affecting muons with a high significance. Furthermore, hints for LFU violation in $R_{D^{(*)}}$ and $R_{J/ψ}$ point at large deviations from the SM in processes involving tau leptons. Together, these hints for NP motivate the possibility of huge LFU-violating effects in $b\to sτ^+τ^-$ transitions. In this article we predict the branching ratios of $B\to Kτ^+τ^-$, $B\to K^{*}τ^+τ^-$ and $B_s\to φτ^+τ^-$ taking into account NP effects in the Wilson coefficients $C_{9(')}^{ττ}$ and $C_{10(')}^{ττ}$. Assuming a common NP explanation of $R_{D^{}}$ , $R_{D^{(*)}}$ and $R_{J/ψ}$, we show that a very large enhancement of $b\to sτ^+τ^-$ processes, of around three orders of magnitude compared to the SM, can be expected under fairly general assumptions. We find that the branching ratios of $B_s\to τ^+τ^-$, $B_s\to φτ^+τ^-$ and $B\to K^{(*)}τ^+τ^-$ under these assumptions are in the observable range for LHCb and Belle II.

We discuss the model-independent scenarios of New Physics in $b\to s\ell\ell$ currently favoured by the data that could be accommodated by this model and consider a few phenomenological constraints on this model.

We assess the uncertainties associated to the breakdown of the isospin hypothesis and the choice of statistical framework in detail. We also determine the hadronic amplitudes (tree and penguin) describing the QCD dynamics involved in these decays, briefly comparing our results with theoretical expectations. For each observable of interest in the $B\to ππ$, $B\to ρρ$ and $B\to ρπ$ systems, we perform an indirect determination based on the constraints from all the other observables available and we discuss the compatibility between indirect and direct determinations. Finally, we review the impact of future improved measurements on the determination of $α$.

In the Standard Model (SM), the rare transitions where a bottom quark decays into a strange quark and a pair of light leptons exhibit a potential sensitivity to physics beyond the SM. In addition, the SM embeds Lepton Flavour Universality (LFU), leading to almost identical probabilities for muon and electron modes. The LHCb collaboration discovered a set of deviations from the SM expectations in decays to muons and also in ratios assessing LFU. Other experiments (Belle, ATLAS, CMS) found consistent measurements, albeit with large error bars. We perform a global fit to all available $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$ data ($\ell=e,μ$) in a model-independent way allowing for different patterns of New Physics. For the first time, the NP hypothesis is preferred over the SM by $5\,σ$ in a general case when NP can enter SM-like operators and their chirally-flipped partners. LFU violation is favoured with respect to LFU at the 3-4$\,σ$ level. We discuss the impact of LFU-violating New Physics on the observable $P_5^\prime$ from $B \to K^*μ^+μ^-$ and we compare our estimate for long-distance charm contributions with an empirical model recently proposed by a group of LHCb experimentalists. Finally, we discuss NP models able to describe this consistent pattern of deviations.

Dalitz-plot analyses of $B\rightarrow Kππ$ decays provide direct access to decay amplitudes, and thereby weak and strong phases can be disentangled by resolving the interference patterns in phase space between intermediate resonant states. A phenomenological isospin analysis of $B\rightarrow K^*(\rightarrow Kπ)π$ decay amplitudes is presented exploiting available amplitude analyses performed at the Babar, Belle and LHCb experiments. A first application consists in constraining the CKM parameters thanks to an external hadronic input. A method, proposed some time ago by two different groups and relying on a bound on the electroweak penguin contribution, is shown to lack the desired robustness and accuracy, and we propose a more alluring alternative using a bound on the annihilation contribution. A second application consists in extracting information on hadronic amplitudes assuming the values of the CKM parameters from a global fit to quark flavour data. The current data yields several solutions, which do not fully support the hierarchy of hadronic amplitudes usually expected from theoretical arguments (colour suppression, suppression of electroweak penguins), as illustrated from computations within QCD factorisation. Some prospects concerning the impact of future measurements at LHCb and Belle II are also presented. Results are obtained with the CKMfitter analysis package, featuring the frequentist statistical approach and using the Rfit scheme to handle theoretical uncertainties.

The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix is a key element to describe flavour dynamics in the Standard Model. With only four parameters, this matrix is able to describe a large range of phenomena in the quark sector, such as CP violation and rare decays. It can thus be constrained by many different processes, which have to be measured experimentally with a high accuracy and computed with a good theoretical control. With the advent of the B factories and the LHCb experiment taking data, the precision has significantly improved recently. The most relevant experimental constraints and theoretical inputs are reviewed and fits to the CKM matrix are presented for the Standard Model and for some topical model-independent studies of New Physics.

In the absence of direct evidence for New Physics at present LHC energies, the focus is set on the anomalies and discrepancies recently observed in rare $b \to s\ell\ell$ transitions which can be interpreted as indirect hints. Global fits have shown that an economical New Physics solution can simultaneously alleviate the tensions in the various channels and can lead to a significant improvement in the description of the data. Alternative explanations within the Standard Model for part of the observed anomalies have been proposed in terms of (unexpectedly large) hadronic effects at low dilepton invariant mass and attributing tensions in protected observables to statistical fluctuations or experimental errors. We review the treatment of hadronic uncertainties in this kinematic regime for one of the most important channels, $B \to K^*μ^+μ^-$, in a pedagogical way. We provide detailed arguments showing that factorisable power corrections cannot account for the observed anomalies and that an explanation through long-distance charm contributions is disfavoured. Some optimized observables at very low dilepton invariant mass are shown to be protected against contributions from the semileptonic coefficient $C_9$ (including any associated long-distance charm effects), enhancing their sensitivity to New Physics contributions to other Wilson coefficients. Finally, we discuss how the recent measurement of $Q_5$ by Belle (and in the future by LHCb and Belle-II) may provide a robust cross-check of our arguments.

The determination of the fundamental parameters of the Standard Model (and its extensions) is often limited by the presence of statistical and theoretical uncertainties. We present several models for the latter uncertainties (random, nuisance, external) in the frequentist framework, and we derive the corresponding $p$-values. In the case of the nuisance approach where theoretical uncertainties are modeled as biases, we highlight the important, but arbitrary, issue of the range of variation chosen for the bias parameters. We introduce the concept of adaptive $p$-value, which is obtained by adjusting the range of variation for the bias according to the significance considered, and which allows us to tackle metrology and exclusion tests with a single and well-defined unified tool, which exhibits interesting frequentist properties. We discuss how the determination of fundamental parameters is impacted by the model chosen for theoretical uncertainties, illustrating several issues with examples from quark flavour physics.

The treatment of hadronic uncertainties in this mode is briefly reviewed, and some of the analyses in the literature are critically reassessed. The global picture provided by the global fit points to a coherent pattern of deviations with a significance substantially above 4$σ$ for different New Physics scenarios. Finally, we propose as the next step in the field to focus on the study of optimized observables that compare electron and muon modes, sensitive to lepton-flavour universality violations and free from hadronic uncertainties (including charm) in the SM, the so called $Q_i$ observables.

Recently, the LHC has found several anomalies in exclusive semileptonic b --> s l^+ l^- decays. In this proceeding, we summarize the most important results of our global analysis of the relevant decay modes. After a discussion of the hadronic uncertainties entering the theoretical predictions, we present an interpretation of the data in terms of generic new physics scenarios. To this end, we have performed model-independent fits of the corresponding Wilson coefficients to the data and have found that in certain scenarios the best fit point is prefererred over the Standard Model by a global significance of more than 4σ. Based on the results, the discrimination between high-scale new physics and low-energy QCD effects as well as the possibility of lepton-flavour universality violation are discussed.

Both effects can be understood in model-independent fits as a short-distance contribution to the Wilson coefficient $C_{9μ}$, with some room for similar contributions in other Wilson coefficients for $b\to sμμ$ transitions. We discuss how a full angular analysis of $B\to K^*ee$ and its comparison with $B\to K^*μμ$ could improve our understanding of these anomalies and help confirming their interpretation in terms of short-distance New Physics. We discuss several observables of interest in this context and provide predictions for them within the Standard Model as well as within several New Physics benchmark scenarios. We pay special attention to the sensitivity of these observables to hadronic uncertainties from SM contributions with charm loops.

Left-Right (LR) models are extensions of the Standard Model where left-right symmetry is restored at high energies, and which are strongly constrained by kaon mixing described in the framework of the $|ΔS|=2$ effective Hamiltonian. We consider the short-distance QCD corrections to this Hamiltonian both in the Standard Model (SM) and in LR models. The leading logarithms occurring in these short-distance corrections can be resummed within a rigourous Effective Field Theory (EFT) approach integrating out heavy degrees of freedom progressively, or using an approximate simpler method of regions identifying the ranges of loop momentum generating large logarithms in the relevant two-loop diagrams. We compare the two approaches in the SM at next-to-leading order, finding a very good agreement when one scale dominates the problem, but only a fair agreement in the presence of a large logarithm at leading order. We compute the short-distance QCD corrections for LR models at next-to-leading order using the method of regions, and we compare the results with the EFT approach for the $WW'$ box with two charm quarks (together with additional diagrams forming a gauge-invariant combination), where a large logarithm occurs already at leading order. We conclude by providing next-to-leading-order estimates for $cc$, $ct$ and $tt$ boxes in LR models.

The impact of this data and other recent measurements on $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$ transitions ($\ell=e,μ$) is considered. We review the observables of interest, focusing on their theoretical uncertainties and their sensitivity to New Physics, based on an analysis employing the QCD factorisation approach including several sources of hadronic uncertainties (form factors, power corrections, charm-loop effects). We perform fits to New Physics contributions including experimental and theoretical correlations. The solution that we proposed in 2013 to solve the $B\to K^*μ^+μ^-$ anomaly, with a contribution ${\mathcal C}_9^{\rm NP}\simeq -1$, is confirmed and reinforced. A wider range of New-Physics scenarios with high significances (between 4 and 5 $σ$) emerges from the fit, some of them being particularly relevant for model building. More data is needed to discriminate among them conclusively. The inclusion of $b\to s e^+ e^-$ observables increases the significance of the favoured scenarios under the hypothesis of New Physics breaking lepton flavour universality. Several tests illustrate the robustness of our conclusions.

Two aspects of isospin breaking in the decay $K^\pm \to π^0 π^0 e^\pm \stackrel{_{(-)}}{ν_e}$ are studied and discussed. The first addresses the possible influence of the phenomenological description of the unitarity cusp on the extraction of the normalization of the form factor from data. Using the scalar form factor of the pion as a theoretical laboratory, we find that this determination is robust under variations of the phenomenological parameterizations of the form factor. The second aspect concerns the issue of radiative corrections. We compute the radiative corrections to the total decay rate for $K^\pm \to π^0 π^0 e^\pm \stackrel{_{(-)}}{ν_e}$ in a setting that allows comparison with the way radiative corrections were handled in the channel $K^\pm \to π^+ π^- e^\pm \stackrel{_{(-)}}{ν_e}$. We find that once radiative corrections are included, the normalizations of the form factor as determined experimentally from data in the two decay channels come to a better agreement. The remaining discrepancy can easily be accounted for by other isospin-breaking corrections, mainly those due to the difference between the masses of the up and down quarks.

Isospin breaking in the $K_{\ell 4}$ form factors induced by the difference between charged and neutral pion masses is discussed within a framework built on suitably subtracted dispersion representations. The $K_{\ell 4}$ form factors are constructed in an iterative way up to two loops in the low-energy expansion by implementing analyticity, crossing, and unitarity due to two-meson intermediate states. Analytical expressions for the phases of the two-loop form factors of the $K^\pm\toπ^+π^- e^\pm ν_e$ channel are presented, allowing one to connect the difference of form-factor phase shifts measured experimentally (out of the isospin limit) and the difference of $S$- and $P$-wave $ππ$ phase shifts studied theoretically (in the isospin limit). The dependence with respect to the two $S$-wave scattering lengths $a_0^0$ and $a_0^2$ in the isospin limit is worked out in a general way, in contrast to previous analyses based on one-loop chiral perturbation theory. The results on the phases of the $K^\pm\toπ^+π^- e^\pm ν_e$ form factors obtained by the NA48/2 collaboration at the CERN SPS are reanalysed including isospin-breaking correction to extract values for the scattering lengths $a_0^0$ and $a_0^2$.
