Suppose that as $n \to \infty$ the uniformly sparse graphs ${\sf G}_n$ converge locally to an infinite $d$-regular tree ${\sf T}_{d}$, $d \ge 3$. We show that the convergence of the Potts free energy density to its Bethe replica symmetric prediction (which has been proved in case $d$ is even, or when $B=0$), yields the local weak convergence of $\varphi^{q,β,B}_n$ and $μ_n^{β,B}$ to the corresponding free or wired random cluster measure, Potts measure, respectively, on ${\sf T}_{d}$. The choice of free versus wired limit is according to which has the larger Potts Bethe functional value, with mixtures of these two appearing {as limit points on} the critical line $β_c(q,B)$ where these two values of the Bethe functional coincide. For $B=0$ and $β>β_c$, we further establish a pure-state decomposition by showing that conditionally on the same dominant color $1 \le k \le q$, the $q$-Potts measures on such edge-expander graphs ${\sf G}_n$ converge locally to the $q$-Potts measure on ${\sf T}_{d}$ with a boundary wired at color $k$.

We study a stochastic geometric flow that describes a growing submanifold $\mathbb{M}(t)\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{\mathrm{d}+1}$. It is an SPDE that comes from a continuum version of origin-excited random walk or once-reinforced random walk. It is given by simultaneously smoothing and inflating the boundary of $\mathbb{M}(t)$ in a neighborhood of the boundary trace of a reflecting Brownian motion. We show that the large-scale fluctuations of an associated height function are given by a regularized Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ)-type equation on a manifold in $\mathbb{R}^{\mathrm{d}+1}$, modulated by a Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator. This is shown in any dimension $\mathrm{d}\geq1$. We also prove that in dimension $\mathrm{d}+1=2$, the regularization in this KPZ-type SPDE can be removed after renormalization. Thus, in dimension $\mathrm{d}+1=2$, fluctuations of the geometric flow have a double-scaling limit given by a singular KPZ-type equation. To our knowledge, this is the first instance of KPZ-type behavior in stochastic Laplacian growth models, which was asked about (for somewhat different models) in Parisi-Zhang '84 and Ramirez-Sidoravicius '04.

We study a stochastic Laplacian growth model, where a set $\mathbf{U}\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{\mathrm{d}}$ grows according to a reflecting Brownian motion in $\mathbf{U}$ stopped at level sets of its boundary local time. We derive a scaling limit for the leading-order behavior of the growing boundary (i.e. "interface"). It is given by a geometric flow-type PDE. It is obtained by an averaging principle for the reflecting Brownian motion. We also show that this geometric flow-type PDE is locally well-posed, and its blow-up times correspond to changes in the diffeomorphism class of the growth model. Our results extend those of Dembo-Groisman-Huang-Sidoravicius '21, which restricts to star-shaped growth domains and radially outwards growth, so that in polar coordinates, the geometric flow transforms into a simple ODE with infinite lifetime. Also, we remove the "separation of scales" assumption that was taken in Dembo-Groisman-Huang-Sidoravicius '21; this forces us to understand the local geometry of the growing interface.

Consider the matrix $A_{\mathcal{G}}$ chosen uniformly at random from the finite set of all $N$-dimensional matrices of zero main-diagonal and binary entries, having each row and column of $A_{\mathcal{G}}$ sum to $d$. That is, the adjacency matrix for the uniformly random $d$-regular simple digraph $\mathcal{G}$. Fixing $d \ge 3$, it has long been conjectured that as $N \to \infty$ the corresponding empirical eigenvalue distributions converge weakly, in probability, to an explicit non-random limit, %measure $μ_d$ on $\mathbb{C}$, which is given by the Brown measure of the free sum of $d$ Haar unitary operators. We reduce this conjecture to bounding the decay in $N$ of the probability that the minimal singular value of the shifted matrix $A(w) = A_{\mathcal{G}} - w I$ is very small. While the latter remains a challenging task, the required bound is comparable to the recently established control on the singularity of $A_{\mathcal{G}}$. The reduction is achieved here by sharp estimates on the behavior at large $N$, near the real line, of the Green's function (aka resolvent) of the Hermitization of $A(w)$, which is of independent interest.

We consider general Exponential Random Graph Models (ERGMs) where the sufficient statistics are functions of homomorphism counts for a fixed collection of simple graphs $F_k$. Whereas previous work has shown a degeneracy phenomenon in dense ERGMs, we show this can be cured by raising the sufficient statistics to a fractional power. We rigorously establish the naïve mean-field approximation for the partition function of the corresponding Gibbs measures, and in case of "ferromagnetic" models with vanishing edge density show that typical samples resemble a typical Erdős--Rényi graph with a planted clique and/or a planted complete bipartite graph of appropriate sizes. We establish such behavior also for the conditional structure of the Erdős--Rényi graph in the large deviations regime for excess $F_k$-homomorphism counts. These structural results are obtained by combining quantitative large deviation principles, established in previous works, with a novel stability form of a result of [5] on the asymptotic solution for the associated entropic variational problem. A technical ingredient of independent interest is a stability form of Finner's generalized Hölder inequality.

We study the line ensembles of non-crossing Brownian bridges above a hard wall, each tilted by the area of the region below it with geometrically growing pre-factors. This model, which mimics the level lines of the $(2+1)$D SOS model above a hard wall, was studied in two works from 2019 by Caputo, Ioffe and Wachtel. In those works, the tightness of the law of the top $k$ paths, for any fixed $k$, was established under either zero or free boundary conditions, which in the former setting implied the existence of a limit via a monotonicity argument. Here we address the open problem of a limit under free boundary conditions: we prove that as the interval length, followed by the number of paths, go to $\infty$, the top $k$ paths converge to the same limit as in the free boundary case, as conjectured by Caputo, Ioffe and Wachtel.

We show that the trajectories of averaged observables of $(X_i(t))$, initialized from some $μ$ independent of $\mathbf J$, are universal, i.e., only depend on the choice of the distribution $\mathbf{J}$ through its first and second moments (assuming e.g., sub-exponential tails). We take a general combinatorial approach to proving universality for dynamical systems with random coefficients, combining a stochastic Taylor expansion with a moment matching-type argument. Concrete settings for which our results imply universality include aging in the spherical SK spin glass, and Langevin dynamics and gradient flows for symmetric and asymmetric Hopfield networks.

But is it the worst attack? We answer the question in the affirmative for three classes of longest chain protocols, designed for different consensus models: 1) Nakamoto's original Proof-of-Work protocol; 2) Ouroboros and SnowWhite Proof-of-Stake protocols; 3) Chia Proof-of-Space protocol. As a consequence, exact characterization of the maximum tolerable adversary power is obtained for each protocol as a function of the average block time normalized by the network delay. The security analysis of these protocols is performed in a unified manner by a novel method of reducing all attacks to a race between the adversary and the honest nodes.

Ben Arous and Guionnet (1995), followed by Guionnet (1997), proved for Gaussian interactions that as the number of particles grows, the short-term empirical law of this dynamics converges a.s. to a non-random law $μ_\star$ of a ``self-consistent single spin dynamics,'' as predicted by physicists. Here we obtain universality of this fact:
For asymmetric disorder given by i.i.d. variables of zero mean, unit variance and exponential or better tail decay, at every temperature, the empirical law of sample paths of the
Langevin-like dynamics in a fixed time interval has the same a.s. limit $μ_\star$.

The Nakamoto longest chain protocol is remarkably simple and has been proven to provide security against any adversary with less than 50% of the total hashing power. Proof-of-stake (PoS) protocols are an energy efficient alternative; however existing protocols adopting Nakamoto's longest chain design achieve provable security only by allowing long-term predictability (which have serious security implications). In this paper, we prove that a natural longest chain PoS protocol with similar predictability as Nakamoto's PoW protocol can achieve security against any adversary with less than 1/(1+e) fraction of the total stake. Moreover we propose a new family of longest chain PoS protocols that achieve security against a 50% adversary, while only requiring short-term predictability. Our proofs present a new approach to analyzing the formal security of blockchains, based on a notion of adversary-proof convergence.

The stability of an Auto-Regressive (AR) time sequence of finite order $L$, is determined by the maximal modulus $r^\star$ among all zeros of its generating polynomial. If $r^\star<1$ then the effect of input and initial conditions decays rapidly in time, whereas for $r^\star>1$ it is exponentially magnified (with constant or polynomially growing oscillations when $r^\star=1$). Persistence of such AR sequence (namely staying non-negative throughout $[0,N]$) with decent probability, requires the largest positive zero of the generating polynomial to have the largest multiplicity among all zeros of modulus $r^\star$. These objects are behind the rich spectrum of persistence probability decay for AR$_L$ with zero initial conditions and i.i.d. Gaussian input, all the way from bounded below to exponential decay in $N$, with intermediate regimes of polynomial and stretched exponential decay. In particular, for AR$_3$ the persistence decay power is expressed via the tail probability for Brownian motion to stay in a cone, exhibiting the discontinuity of such power decay between the AR$_3$ whose generating polynomial has complex zeros of rational versus irrational angles.

In this paper, we extend its scope and present a more geometric insight into the mechanism of that proof, exploiting the notion of spherical image of the reaction polytope. This allows to view the asymptotic behavior of the vector field describing the mass-action dynamics of chemical reactions as the result of an interaction between the faces of this polytope in different dimensions. The semi-infinite Atlas process is a one-dimensional system of Brownian particles, where only the leftmost particle gets a unit drift to the right. Its particle spacing process has infinitely many stationary measures, with one distinguished translation invariant reversible measure. We show that the latter is attractive for a large class of initial configurations of slowly growing (or bounded) particle densities. Key to our proof is a new estimate on the rate of convergence to equilibrium for the particle spacing in a triangular array of finite, large size systems.

We study the long-range asymptotic behavior for an out-of-equilibrium countable one-dimensional system of Brownian particles interacting through their rank-dependent drifts. Focusing on the semi-infinite case, where only the leftmost particle gets a constant drift to the right, we derive and solve the corresponding one- sided Stefan (free-boundary) equations. Via this solution we explicitly determine the limiting particle-density profile as well as the asymptotic trajectory of the leftmost particle. Consider an advancing `front' $ R(t) \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0} $ and particles performing independent continuous time random walks on $ (R(t),\infty)\cap\mathbb{Z} $. Starting at $R(0)=0$, whenever a particle attempts to jump into $R(t)$ the latter instantaneously moves $k \ge 1$ steps to the right, absorbing all particles along its path. We take $ k $ to be the minimal random integer such that exactly $ k $ particles are absorbed by the move of $ R $, and view the particle system as a discrete version of the Stefan problem \begin{align*}
&\partial_t u_*(t,ξ) = \tfrac12 \partial^2_ξ u_*(t,ξ), \quad ξ>r(t),
&u_*(t,r(t))=0,
&\tfrac{d~}{dt}r(t) = \tfrac12 \partial_ξu_*(t,r(t)),
&t\mapsto r(t) \text{ non-decreasing }, \quad r(0):=0. \end{align*} For a constant initial particles density $u_*(0,ξ)=ρ{\bf 1}_{\{ξ>0\}}$, at $ρ<1$ the particle system and the PDE exhibit the same diffusive behavior at large time, whereasat $ρ\ge 1$ the PDE explodes instantaneously. Focusing on the critical density $ ρ=1 $, we analyze the large time behavior of the front $ R(t) $ for the particle system, and obtain both the scaling exponent of $R(t)$ and an explicit description of its random scaling limit. Our result unveils a rarely seen phenomenon where the macroscopic scaling exponent is sensitive to the amount of initial local fluctuations. Further, the scaling limit demonstrates an interesting oscillation between instantaneous super- and sub-critical phases. Our method is based on a novel monotonicity as well as PDE-type estimates.

We prove a sample path Large Deviation Principle (LDP) for a class of jump processes whose rates are not uniformly Lipschitz continuous in phase space. Building on it we further establish the corresponding Wentzell-Freidlin (W-F) (infinite time horizon) asymptotic theory. These results apply to jump Markov processes that model the dynamics of chemical reaction networks under mass action kinetics, on a microscopic scale. We provide natural sufficient topological conditions for the applicability of our LDP and W-F results. This then justifies the computation of non-equilibrium potential and exponential transition time estimates between different attractors in the large volume limit, for systems that are beyond the reach of standard chemical reaction network theory.

We study the spectrum of a random multigraph with a degree sequence ${\bf D}_n=(D_i)_{i=1}^n$ and average degree $1 \ll ω_n \ll n$, generated by the configuration model, and also the spectrum of the analogous random simple graph. We show that, when the empirical spectral distribution (ESD) of $ω_n^{-1} {\bf D}_n $ converges weakly to a limit $ν$, under mild moment assumptions (e.g., $D_i/ω_n$ are i.i.d. with a finite second moment), the ESD of the normalized adjacency matrix converges in probability to $ν\boxtimes σ_{\rm sc}$, the free multiplicative convolution of $ν$ with the semicircle law. Relating this limit with a variant of the Marchenko--Pastur law yields the continuity of its density (away from zero), and an effective procedure for determining its support.
Our proof of convergence is based on a coupling between the random simple graph and multigraph with the same degrees, which might be of independent interest. We further construct and rely on a coupling of the multigraph to an inhomogeneous Erdős-Rényi graph with the target ESD, using three intermediate random graphs, with a negligible fraction of edges modified in each step.

In this context, we show that the joint law of ranked particles, after being centered and scaled by $t^{-1/4}$, converges as $t \to \infty$ to the Gaussian field corresponding to the solution of the additive stochastic heat equation on $\mathbb{R}_+$ with Neumann boundary condition at zero. This allows us to express the asymptotic fluctuation of the lowest ranked particle in terms of a $ \frac{1}{4} $-fractional Brownian motion. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Pal and Pitman (2008) about the asymptotic Gaussian fluctuation of the ranked particles.

Considering these graphs at their critical parameters, we show that the joint law of the re-scaled by $N^{2/3}$ and ordered sizes of their connected components, converges to that of the ordered lengths of excursions above zero for a reflected Brownian motion with drift. The mixing time of the lamplighter chain on the torus ${\mathbf Z}_n^d$ is known to have a cutoff at a time asymptotic to the cover time of ${\mathbf Z}_n^d$ if $d=2$, and to half the cover time if $d \ge 3$. We show that the mixing time of the lamplighter chain on $G_n(a)={\mathbf Z}_n^2 \times {\mathbf Z}_{a \log n}$ has a cutoff at $ψ(a)$ times the cover time of $G_n(a)$ as $n \to \infty$, where $ψ$ is an explicit weakly decreasing map from $(0,\infty)$ onto $[1/2,1)$. In particular, as $a > 0$ varies, the threshold continuously interpolates between the known thresholds for ${\mathbf Z}_n^2$ and ${\mathbf Z}_n^3$. Perhaps surprisingly, we find a phase transition (non-smoothness of $ψ$) at the point $a_*=πr_3 (1+\sqrt{2})$, where high dimensional behavior ($ψ(a)=1/2$ for all $a \ge a_*$) commences. Here $r_3$ is the effective resistance from $0$ to $\infty$ in ${\mathbf Z}^3$.

We show that the limiting particle density is given by the unique solution of the approriate McKean-Vlasov equation and that the corresponding cumulative distribution function evolves according to the porous medium equation with convection. The large deviations rate function is provided in explicit form. This is the first instance of a LDP for interacting diffusions, where the interaction occurs both through the drift and the diffusion coefficients and where the rate function can be given explicitly. Here, $b_α=0$ when $α\le-1$ and otherwise $b_α\in(0,\infty)$ is independent of the detailed regularly varying variance function and corresponds to persistence probabilities for an explicit stationary Gaussian process of smooth sample path. Further, making precise the solution $φ_d({\mathbf{x}},t)$ to the $d$-dimensional heat equation initiated by a Gaussian white noise $φ_d({\mathbf{x}},0)$, we confirm that the probability of $φ_d({\mathbf{x}},t)\neq0$ for all $t\in[1,T]$, is $T^{-b_α+o(1)}$, for $α=d/2-1$.

We provide an explicit formula for the limiting free energy density (log-partition function divided by the number of vertices) for ferromagnetic Potts models on uniformly sparse graph sequences converging locally to the d-regular tree for d even, covering all temperature regimes. This formula coincides with the Bethe free energy functional evaluated at a suitable fixed point of the belief propagation recursion on the d-regular tree, the so-called replica symmetric solution. Let $S_n^{(2)}$ denote the iterated partial sums. That is, $S_n^{(2)}=S_1+S_2+ ... +S_n$, where $S_i=X_1+X_2+ ... s+X_i$. Assuming $X_1, X_2,....,X_n$ are integrable, zero-mean, i.i.d. random variables, we show that the persistence probabilities $$p_n^{(2)}:=\PP(\max_{1\le i \le n}S_i^{(2)}< 0) \le c\sqrt{\frac{\EE|S_{n+1}|}{(n+1)\EE|X_1|}},$$ with $c \le 6 \sqrt{30}$ (and $c=2$ whenever $X_1$ is…

The converse inequality holds whenever the non-zero $\min(-X_1,0)$ is bounded or when it has only finite third moment and in addition $X_1$ is squared integrable. Furthermore, $p_n^{(2)}\asymp n^{-1/4}$ for any non-degenerate squared integrable, i.i.d., zero-mean $X_i$. In contrast, we show that for any $0 < γ< 1/4$ there exist integrable, zero-mean random variables for which the rate of decay of $p_n^{(2)}$ is $n^{-γ}$.

We consider the ferromagnetic Ising model on a sequence of graphs $G_n$ converging locally weakly to a rooted random tree. Generalizing [Montanari, Mossel, Sly '11], under an appropriate "continuity" property, we show that the Ising measures on these graphs converge locally weakly to a measure, which is obtained by first picking a random tree, and then the symmetric mixture of Ising measures with $+$ and $-$ boundary conditions on that tree. Under the extra assumptions that $G_n$ are edge-expanders, we show that the local weak limit of the Ising measures conditioned on positive magnetization, is the Ising measure with $+$ boundary condition on the limiting tree. The "continuity" property holds except possibly for countably many choices of $β$, which for limiting trees of minimum degree at least three, are all within certain explicitly specified compact interval. We further show the edge-expander property for (most of) the configuration model graphs corresponding to limiting (multi-type) Galton Watson trees.

The structure of the transient layer at the interface between air and the aqueous solution of silica nanoparticles with the size distribution of particles that has been determined from small-angle scattering has been studied by the X-ray reflectometry method. The reconstructed depth profile of the polarizability of the substance indicates the presence of a structure consisting of several layers of nanoparticles with the thickness that is more than twice as large as the thickness of the previously described structure. The adsorption of 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine molecules at the hydrosol/air interface is accompanied by the condensation of anion silica nanoparticles at the interface. This phenomenon can be qualitatively explained by the formation of the positive surface potential due to the penetration and accumulation of Na+ cations in the phospholipid membrane.

We consider homogeneous factor models on uniformly sparse graph sequences converging locally to a (unimodular) random tree $T$, and study the existence of the free energy density $φ$, the limit of the log-partition function divided by the number of vertices $n$ as $n$ tends to infinity. We provide a new interpolation scheme and use it to prove existence of, and to explicitly compute, the quantity $φ$ subject to uniqueness of a relevant Gibbs measure for the factor model on $T$. By way of example we compute $φ$ for the independent set (or hard-core) model at low fugacity, for the ferromagnetic Ising model at all parameter values, and for the ferromagnetic Potts model with both weak enough and strong enough interactions. Even beyond uniqueness regimes our interpolation provides useful explicit bounds on $φ$. In the regimes in which we establish existence of the limit, we show that it coincides with the Bethe free energy functional evaluated at a suitable fixed point of the belief propagation (Bethe) recursions on $T$. In the special case that $T$ has a Galton-Watson law, this formula coincides with the nonrigorous "Bethe prediction" obtained by statistical physicists using the "replica" or "cavity" methods. Thus our work is a rigorous generalization of these heuristic calculations to the broader class of sparse graph sequences converging locally to trees. We also provide a variational characterization for the Bethe prediction in this general setting, which is of independent interest.
