We present and discuss an original method to synthesize disordered Nanostructured (NS) VO$_x$ films with controlled stoichiometry and tunable electronic structures. In these NS films, the original lattice symmetry of the bulk vanadium oxides is broken and atoms are arranged in a highly disordered structure . The stoichiometry-dependent disorder as a function of the oxygen concentration has been characterized by in-situ X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure (XANES) spectroscopy identifying the spectroscopic fingerprints. Results show structural rearrangements that deviate from the octahedral symmetry with different coexisting disordered phases. The modulation of the electronic structure of the NS films based on the resulted stoichiometry and the quantum confinement in the NS particles are also discussed. We demonstrate the possibility to modulate the electronic structure of VO$_x$ NS films accessing new disordered atomic configurations with a controlled stoichiometry that provides an extraordinary opportunity to match a wide number of technological applications.

Abstract:
The effects of spin-1 impurities introduced in dimerized antiferromagnetic spin chains are studied using Lanczos diagonalization and quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Firstly, the magnitude of the interaction between a Ni-ion replacing a Cu-ion is derived for the case study system Cu-O-Cu. Then, it is shown that the introduction of S=1 impurities leads to the suppression of the original spin gap…

Then, it is shown that the introduction of S=1 impurities leads to the suppression of the original spin gap of the dimerized system and to the enhancement of the antiferromagnetic correlations close to the impurity. These features are interpreted in terms of a valence bond picture of the ground state of both the pure and the doped system. The similitudes and differences between the underlying mechanisms that produce these effects in the cases of nonmagnetic and S=1 impurities are analyzed. It is stressed that a singlet formed between the spin-1 impurity site and the two spin-1/2 neighbors spins behaves as an effective nonmagnetic vacancy which may be partially responsible for the enhancement of the antiferromagnetic correlations on the whole system. Implications of these results for experiment are also discussed.

Dynamical properties of the novel inorganic spin-Peierls compound α'--NaV2O5 are investigated using a one-dimensional dimerized Heisenberg model. By exact diagonalizations of chains with up to 28 sites, supplemented by a finite-size scaling analysis, the dimerization parameter δis determined by requiring that the model reproduces the experimentally observed spin gap Δ. The dynamical and static spin structure factors are calculated. As for CuGeO3, the existence of a low energy magnon branch separated from the continuum is predicted. The present calculations also suggest that a large magnetic Raman scattering intensity should appear above an energy threshold of 1.9 Δ. The predicted photoemission spectrum is qualitatively similar to results for an undimerized chain due to the presence of sizable short-range antiferromagnetic correlations.
