Abstract:
In this work, photostrictive manipulations of static and dynamic magnetic properties are demonstrated in an extrinsic multiferroic composite. The photostriction is achieved with visible light in the blue region of the spectrum. The composites consist of 5 nm or 10 nm magnetostrictive Fe$_{81}$Ga$_{19}$ thin films coupled to a piezoelectric (011)-Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_3$-Pb(Zr,Ti)O$_3$ substra…

In this work, photostrictive manipulations of static and dynamic magnetic properties are demonstrated in an extrinsic multiferroic composite. The photostriction is achieved with visible light in the blue region of the spectrum. The composites consist of 5 nm or 10 nm magnetostrictive Fe$_{81}$Ga$_{19}$ thin films coupled to a piezoelectric (011)-Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_3$-Pb(Zr,Ti)O$_3$ substrate. Angular dependent magnetization reversals properties are largely enhanced or reduced under a converse magneto-photostrictive effect (CMPE). The CMPE strength is analysed with a novel coefficient named the converse magneto-photostrictive coupling coefficient. This coefficient is proposed as a general approach to analyse and to compare different extrinsic multiferroics under the converse magneto-photostrictive effect. Its thickness dependence reveals that the CMPE strength decreases with an increase of the Fe$_{81}$Ga$_{19}$ thickness. Experimental evidence for a control of dynamic magnetic properties under CMPE is then revealed by ferromagnetic resonance measurements. Resonant fields are shifted under CMPE, whereas their linewidths remain constant. Furthermore, resonant field shifts can be either positive or negative depending on the in-plane angle. The largest shift under CMPE of +5.7 % is obtained for the 5 nm sample. Our study shows that the CMPE provides an efficient approach for a control of not only the static but also the dynamic magnetic properties in extrinsic multiferroics.

Among the magnetostrictive alloys the one formed of iron and gallium (called "Galfenol" from its U.S. Office of Naval Research discoverers in the late 90's) is attractive for its low hysteresis, good tensile stress, good machinability and its rare-earth free composition. One of its applications is its association with a piezoelectric material to form a extrinsic multiferroic composite as an alternative to the rare room temperature intrinsic multiferroics such as BiFeO$_3$. This study focuses on thin Fe$_{0.81}$Ga$_{0.19}$ films of thickness 5, 10, 20 and 60 nm deposited by sputtering onto glass substrates. Magnetization reversal study reveals a well-defined symmetry with two principal directions independent of the thickness. The magnetic signature of this magnetic anisotropy decreases with increasing FeGa thickness due to an increase of the non-preferential polycrystalline arrangement, as revealed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations. Thus when magnetic field is applied along these specific directions, magnetization reversal is mainly coherent for the thinnest sample as seen from the transverse magnetization cycles. Magnetostriction coefficient reaches 20 ppm for the 5 nm film and decreases for thicker samples, where polycrystalline part with non-preferential orientation prevails.

The temperature dependence of exchange bias properties are studied in polycrystalline $ \mathrm{BiFeO_3} / \mathrm{Ni_{81}Fe_{19}} $ bilayers, for different $ \mathrm{BiFeO_3} $ thicknesses. Using a field cooling protocol, a non-monotonic behavior of the exchange bias field is shown in the exchange-biased bilayers. Another thermal protocol, the Soeya protocol, related to the $ \mathrm{BiFeO_3} $ thermal activation energies was carried out and reveals a two-step evolution of the exchange bias field. The results of these two different protocols are similar to the ones obtained for measurements previously reported on epitaxial $ \mathrm{BiFeO_3} $, indicating a driving mechanism independent of the long-range crystalline arrangement (i.e., epitaxial or polycrystalline). An intrinsic property of $ \mathrm{BiFeO_3} $ is proposed as being the driving mechanism for the thermal dependent magnetization reversal: the canting of the $ \mathrm{BiFeO_3} $ spins leading to a biquadratic contribution to the exchange coupling. The temperature dependence of the magnetization reversal angular behavior agrees with the presence of such a biquadratic contribution for exchange biased bilayers studied here.

An experimental study of the in-plane azimuthal behaviour and frequency dependence of the ferromagnetic resonance field and the resonance linewidth as a function of BiFeO$_3$ thickness is carried out in a polycrystalline exchange-biased BiFeO$_3$/Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$ system. The magnetization decrease of the Pt/BiFeO$_3$/Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$/Pt heterostructures with BiFeO$_3$ thickness deduced from static measurements has been confirmed by dynamic investigations. Ferromagnetic resonance measurements have shown lower gyromagnetic ratio in a perpendicular geometry compared with that of a parallel geometry. The monotonous decrease of gyromagnetic ratio in a perpendicular geometry as a function of the BiFeO$_3$ film thickness seems to be related to the spin-orbit interactions due to the neighbouring Pt film at its interface with Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$ film. The in-plane azimuthal shape of the total linewidth of the uniform mode shows isotropic behaviour that increases with BiFeO$_3$ thickness. The study of the frequency dependence of the resonance linewidth in a broad band of 3 to 35 GHz has allowed the determination of intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to the relaxation as function of BiFeO$_3$ thickness in perpendicular geometries. In our system the magnetic relaxation is dominated by the spin-pum** mechanism due to the presence of Pt. The insertion of BiFeO$_3$ between Pt and Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$ attenuates the spin-pum** dam** at one interface.

A temperature dependent coherent magnetization reversal model is proposed for size-distributed assemblies of ferromagnetic nanoparticles and ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic core-shell nanoparticles. The nanoparticles are assumed to be of uniaxial anisotropy and all aligned along their easy axis. The thermal dependence is included by considering thermal fluctuations, implemented via the Néel-Arrhenius theory. Thermal and angular dependence of magnetization reversal loops, coercive field and exchange-bias field are obtained, showing that F-AF size-distributed exchange-coupled nanoparticles exhibit temperature-dependent asymmetric magnetization reversal. Also, non-monotonic evolutions of He and Hc with T are demonstrated. The angular dependence of Hc with T exhibits a complex behavior, with the presence of an apex, whose position and amplitude are strongly T dependent. The angular dependence of He with T exhibits complex behaviors, which depends on the AF anisotropy and exchange coupling. The resulting angular behavior demonstrates the key role of the size distribution and temperature in the magnetic response of nanoparticles.

Abstract:
We present transport and structural data from epitaxial (100) and (111) Au/Fe multilayers grown by molecular beam epitaxy. From their analysis, we conclude that an electron channelling mechanism, due to strong specular reflection of the minority spin carrier at the Au/Fe interfaces, is responsible for the high conductivity in the (100) multilayers.

The in-plane correlation lengths and magnetic disorder of magnetic domains in a transition metal multilayer have been studied using neutron scattering techniques. A new theoretical framework is presented connecting the observed scattering to the in-plane correlation length and the dispersion of the local magnetization vector about the mean macroscopic direction. The results unambiguously show the highly correlated nature of the antiferromagnetically coupled domain structure vertically throughout the multilayer. We are easily able to relate the neutron determined magnetic dispersion and domain correlations to magnetization and magnetotransport experiments.
