Abundance ratios of the nuclear-spin isomers of H$_2$O and NH$_3$ have been measured in about two dozen comets, with a mean value corresponding to a nuclear-spin temperature of $\sim$ 30 K. The real meaning of these unequilibrated nuclear-spin abundance ratios is still debated. However, an equilibrated water ortho-to-para ratio (OPR) of 3 is also commonly observed. The H channel of VIRTIS (VIRTIS-H) on board Rosetta provided high-resolution 2.5--2.9 $μ$m spectra of H$_2$O vapour in the coma of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko (67P), which are suitable for the determination of the OPR of water in this comet. A large dataset of VIRTIS-H spectra obtained in limb-sounding viewing geometry was analysed, covering heliocentric distances from 1.24 to 2.73 au and altitudes from a few hundred metres to $>$ 100 km. The OPR, together with the H$_2$O rotational temperature and column density, were derived for each spectra. The weak lines of the $ν_1$, $ν_1+ν_3-ν_1$ and $ν_2+ν_3-ν_2$ bands in the 2.774--2.910 $μ$m range were used to calculate by how much the strong $ν_3$ band centred at 2.67 $μ$m is attenuated due to optical depth effects, expressed by the attenuation factor $f_{\rm atten}$. Most OPR determinations are strongly affected by opacity effects, as demonstrated by the observed anti-correlation between the OPR and the column density, and the correlation between the OPR and attenuation factor $f_{\rm atten}$. Based on both radiative transfer calculations and OPR values obtained in low-opacity conditions, we derive an OPR of 2.94 $\pm$ 0.06 for comet 67P. The water OPR measured in the coma of 67P is consistent with laboratory experiments showing that water vapour that has thermally desorbed from water ice has a statistical value of 3, regardless of the past formation process of water ice.

The apparition of bright comets C/2012 F6 (Lemmon) and C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy) in March-April 2013 and January 2015, combined with the improved observational capabilities of submillimeter facilities, offered an opportunity to carry out sensitive compositional and isotopic studies of the volatiles in their coma. We observed comet Lovejoy with the IRAM 30m telescope between 13 and 26 January 2015, and with the Odin submillimeter space observatory on 29 January - 3 February 2015. We detected 22 molecules and several isotopologues. The H$_2^{16}$O and H$_2^{18}$O production rates measured with Odin follow a periodic pattern with a period of 0.94 days and an amplitude of ~25%. The inferred isotope ratios in comet Lovejoy are $^{16}$O/$^{18}$O = 499 $\pm$ 24 and D/H = 1.4 $\pm$ 0.4 $\times 10^{-4}$ in water, $^{32}$S/$^{34}$S = 24.7 $\pm$ 3.5 in CS, all compatible with terrestrial values. The ratio $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C = 109 $\pm$ 14 in HCN is marginally higher than terrestrial and $^{14}$N/$^{15}$N = 145 $\pm$ 12 in HCN is half the Earth ratio. Several upper limits for D/H or 12C/13C in other molecules are reported. From our observation of HDO in comet C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy), we report the first D/H ratio in an Oort Cloud comet that is not larger than the terrestrial value. On the other hand, the observation of the same HDO line in the other Oort-cloud comet, C/2012 F6 (Lemmon), suggests a D/H value four times higher. Given the previous measurements of D/H in cometary water, this illustrates that a diversity in the D/H ratio and in the chemical composition, is present even within the same dynamical group of comets, suggesting that current dynamical groups contain comets formed at very different places or times in the early solar system.

The abundances relative to water of ethylene glycol and formamide are 0.2-0.3% and 0.02% in the two comets, similar to the values measured in comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp). We also report the detection of HCOOH and CH$_3$CHO in comet C/2013 R1 (Lovejoy), and a search for other complex species (methyl formate, glycolaldehyde).

Implicit solvers present strong limitations when used on supercomputing facilities and in particular for adaptive mesh-refinement codes. We present a new method for implicit adaptive time-step** on adaptive mesh refinement-grids. We implement it in the radiation hydrodynamics solver we designed for the RAMSES code for astrophysical purposes and, more particularly, for protostellar collapse. We briefly recall the radiation hydrodynamics equations and the adaptive time-step** methodology used for hydrodynamical solvers. We then introduce the different types of boundary conditions (Dirichlet, Neumann, and Robin) that are used at the interface between levels and present our implementation of the new method in the RAMSES code. The method is tested against classical diffusion and radiation hydrodynamics tests, after which we present an application for protostellar collapse. We show that using Dirichlet boundary conditions at level interfaces is a good compromise between robustness and accuracy and that it can be used in structure formation calculations. The gain in computational time over our former unique time step method ranges from factors of 5 to 50 depending on the level of adaptive time-step** and on the problem. We successfully compare the old and new methods for protostellar collapse calculations that involve highly nonlinear physics. We have developed a simple but robust method for adaptive time-step** of implicit scheme on adaptive mesh-refinement grids. It can be applied to a wide variety of physical problems that involve diffusion processes.

Our goal was to characterize the distant gaseous and dust activity of comet C\2012 S1 (ISON), inbound, from observations of H2O, CO and the dust coma in the far-infrared and submillimeter domains. In this paper, we report observations undertaken with the Herschel Space Observatory on 8 & 13 March 2013 (rh = 4.54 - 4.47AU) and with the 30m telescope of Institut de Radioastronomie Millimétrique (IRAM) in March and April 2013 (rh = 4.45 - 4.18 AU). The HIFI instrument aboard Herschel was used to observe the H$_{2}$O $1_{10}-1_{01}$ line at 557 GHz, whereas images of the dust coma at 70 and 160 μm were acquired with the PACS instrument. Spectra acquired at the IRAM 30m telescope cover the CO J(2-1) line at 230.5 GHz. The spectral observations were analysed with excitation and radiative transfer models. A model of dust thermal emission taking into account a range of dust sizes is used to analyse the PACS maps. While H$_{2}$O was not detected in our 8 March 2013 observation, we derive a sensitive 3 $σ$ upper limit of QH$_{2}$O < 3.5 x 10$^{26}$ molecules/s for this date. A marginal 3.2 $σ$ detection of CO is found, corresponding to a CO production rate of QCO = 3.5 x 10$^{27}$ molecules/s. The Herschel PACS measurements show a clear detection of the coma and tail in both the 70 μm and 160 μm maps. Under the assumption of a 2 km radius nucleus, we infer dust production rates in the range 10 - 13 kg/s or 40 - 70 kg/s depending on whether a low or high gaseous activity from the nucleus surface is assumed. We constrain the size distribution of the emitted dust by comparing PACS 70 and 160 μm data, and considering optical data. Size indices between -4 and -3.6 are suggested. The morphology of the tail observed on 70 μm images can be explained by the presence of grains with ages older than 60 days.
