We use hyperbolic tensor networks to construct a holographic map for black hole interiors that adds a notion of locality to the non-isometric codes proposed by Akers, Engelhardt, Harlow, Penington, and Vardhan. We use tools provided by these networks to study the relationship between non-isometries and quantum extremal surfaces behind the horizon. Furthermore, we introduce a limited notion of dynamics for these interior tensor networks based on the qudit models introduced by Akers et al., and study the evolution of quantum extremal surfaces in an evaporating black hole. We also find a tensor network description of a wormhole connecting the black hole interior to the radiation, providing a mechanism for interior states and operators to be encoded in the radiation after the Page time. As a particular case, we construct a tensor network realization of the backwards-forwards maps recently proposed to incorporate non-trivial effective dynamics in dynamical constructions of these non-isometric black hole codes.

The backwards-forwards map, introduced as a generalization of the non-isometric holographic maps of the black hole interior of Akers, Engelhardt, Harlow, Penington, and Vardhan to include non-trivial dynamics in the effective description, has two possible formulations differing in when the post-selection is performed. While these two forms are equivalent on the set of dynamically generated states -- states formed from unitary time evolution acting on well-defined initial configurations of infalling matter -- they differ on the generic set of states necessary to describe the apparent world of the infalling observer. We show that while both versions successfully reproduce the Page curve, the version involving post-selection as the final step, dubbed the backwards-forwards-post-selection (BFP) map, has the desirable properties of being non-isometric but isometric on average and providing state-dependent reconstruction of bulk operators, while the other version does not. Thus the BFP map is a suitable non-isometric code describing the black hole interior including interior interactions.

We introduce a new holographic map for encoding black hole interiors by including both fundamental and effective dynamics. This holographic map is constructed by evolving a state in the effective, semiclassical gravity description of the interior backwards in time to pull the degrees of freedom outside the black hole, before evolving forwards in time in the fundamental description. We show this ``backwards-forwards'' map is equivalent to a post-selection map of the type introduced by Akers, Engelhardt, Harlow, Penington, and Vardhan, and in the case of trivial effective interactions reduces to their model, while providing a suitable generalization when those interactions are nontrivial. We show the map is equivariant with respect to time evolution, and independent of any interactions outside the black hole. This construction includes interactions with an infaller in a way that preserves the unitarity of black hole evolution exactly and does not allow for superpolynomial computational complexity.

We investigate the transformation of entanglement entropy under dualities, using the Kramers-Wannier duality present in the transverse field Ising model as our example. Entanglement entropy between local spin degrees of freedom is not generically preserved by the duality; instead, entangled states may be mapped to states with no local entanglement. To understand the fate of this entanglement, we consider two quantitative descriptions of degrees of freedom and their transformation under duality. The first involves Kraus operators implementing the partial trace as a quantum channel, while the second utilizes the algebraic approach to quantum mechanics, where degrees of freedom are encoded in subalgebras. Using both approaches, we show that entanglement of local degrees of freedom is not lost; instead it is transferred to non-local degrees of freedom by the duality transformation.

We study the holographic realization of optimized correlation measures -- measures of quantum correlation that generalize elementary entropic formulas -- in two-dimensional thermal states dual to spacetimes with a black hole horizon. We consider the symmetric bipartite optimized correlation measures: the entanglement of purification, Q-correlation, R-correlation, and squashed entanglement, as well as the mutual information, a non-optimized correlation measure, and identify the bulk surface configurations realizing their geometric duals over the parameter space of boundary region sizes and the black hole radius. This parameter space is divided into phases associated with given topologies for these bulk surface configurations, and first-order phase transitions occur as a new topology of bulk surfaces becomes preferred. The distinct phases can be associated with different degrees of correlation between the boundary regions and the thermal environment. The Q-correlation has the richest behavior, with a structure of nested optimizations leading to two topologically distinct bulk surface configurations being equally valid as geometric duals at generic points in the phase diagram.

We discuss how electromagnetically dualizing a 1-form to a 2-form in AdS$_5$ exchanges regular and alternate boundary conditions, and thus gauges the originally global $U(1)$ symmetry in the dual field theory. The generalized symmetry current dual to the 2-form in the bulk is identified as the dual field strength of the gauged $U(1)$, and the associated double-trace operator with a logarithmically running coupling is just the gauged $U(1)$ Maxwell action. Applying this dualization to an AdS Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory dual to a global $U(1) \times U(1)$ model with an 't Hooft anomaly results in a theory with a modified field strength that holographically realizes a 2-group symmetry. We explicitly carry out the holographic renormalization to verify this, and discuss the generalization to other rank fields in other dimensions.

We explore ways to quantify multipartite correlations, in quantum information and in holography. We focus on optimized correlation measures, linear combinations of entropies minimized over all possible purifications of a state that satisfy monotonicity conditions. These contain far more information about correlations than entanglement entropy alone. We present a procedure to derive such quantities, and construct a menagerie of symmetric optimized correlation measures on three parties. These include tripartite generalizations of the entanglement of purification, the squashed entanglement, and the recently introduced Q-correlation and R-correlation. Some correlation measures vanish only on product states, and thus quantify both classical and quantum correlations; others vanish on any separable state, capturing quantum correlations alone. We then use a procedure motivated by the surface-state correspondence to construct holographic duals for the correlation measures as linear combinations of bulk surfaces. The geometry of the surfaces can preserve, partially break, or fully break the symmetry of the correlation measure. The optimal purification is encoded in the locations of certain points, whose locations are fixed by constraints on the areas of combinations of surfaces. This gives a new concrete connection between information theoretic quantities evaluated on a boundary state and detailed geometric properties of its dual.

Recent developments have exposed close connections between quantum information and holography. In this paper, we explore the geometrical interpretations of the recently introduced $Q$-correlation and $R$-correlation, $E_Q$ and $E_R$. We find that $E_Q$ admits a natural geometric interpretation via the surface-state correspondence: it is a minimal mutual information between a surface region $A$ and a cross-section of $A$'s entanglement wedge with $B$. We note a strict trade-off between this minimal mutual information and the symmetric side-channel assisted distillable entanglement from the environment $E$ to $A$, $I^{ss}(E\rangle A)$. We also show that the $R$-correlation, $E_R$, coincides holographically with the entanglement wedge cross-section. This further elucidates the intricate relationship between entanglement, correlations, and geometry in holographic field theories.

We build a holographic model for the pairing fluctuation pseudogap phase in fermionic high temperature superconductivity/superfluidity based on the BCS-BEC crossover scenario. The pseudogap originates from incoherent Cooper pairing and has been observed in recent cold atom experiments. The strength of Cooper pairing and hence the BCS-BEC crossover is controlled by an effective 4-Fermi interaction and we argue that the double-trace deformation for charged scalar operator is a close analog in large N field theories. We employ the double-trace deformed Abelian Higgs model of holographic superconductors and propose that the incoherent fluctuations of the charged scalar in the bulk is the holographic dual of the fluctuating Cooper pairs. Using a Madelung transformation and the velocity-potential formalism, we develop a quantum fluid dynamics as an effective theory for these bulk fluctuations. The new fluid dynamics takes care of the boundary conditions required by AdS/CFT and encodes the vacuum polarization effect in curved spacetime. The pseudogap in conductivity can be related to the plasma oscillation of this bulk fluid.

We embed extremal black brane solutions in four-dimensional maximally supersymmetric gauged supergravity, obtain the linearized Dirac equations for each spin-1/2 mode that cannot mix with a gravitino, and solve these equations with infalling boundary conditions to calculate retarded Green's functions. For generic values of the chemical potentials, we find Fermi surfaces with universally non-Fermi liquid behavior, matching the situation for four-dimensional N=4 Super-Yang-Mills. Fermi surface singularities appear and disappear discontinuously at the point with all chemical potentials equal, reminiscent of a quantum critical point. One limit of parameter space has zero entropy at zero temperature, and fermionic fluctuations are perfectly stable inside an energy region around the Fermi surface. An ambiguity in the quantization of the fermions is resolved by supersymmetry.

We show that fermionic fluctuations are completely stable within a gap in energy around a Fermi surface singularity, beyond which non-Fermi liquid behavior returns. This gap disappears abruptly once the final charge is turned on, and is associated to a discontinuity in the corresponding chemical potential. We also show that the singular near-horizon geometry lifts to a smooth AdS_3 x R^3, and interpret the gap as a region where the quasiparticle momentum is spacelike in six dimensions due to the momentum component in the Kaluza-Klein direction, corresponding to the final charge.

The four-dimensional case is a massless charged fermion, while in five dimensions we find a massive charged fermion with a Pauli coupling. In both cases, the corresponding scaling exponent is less than one half, leading to non-Fermi liquid behavior with no stable quasiparticles, although some excitations have widths more than ten times smaller than their excitation energy. In the five-dimensional case, both the Fermi momentum and the scaling exponent appear to have simple values, and a Luttinger calculation suggests that the gauginos may carry most of the charge of the black hole.

The isometry group of this Godel-Schrodinger spacetime is appropriate to provide a holographic dual for the same non-relativistic conformal theory as the ordinary Schrodinger geometry, but defined on a sphere. This spacetime also possesses closed timelike curves outside a certain critical radius. We show that a holographic preferred screen for an observer at the origin sits at an interior radius, suggesting that a holographic dual description would only require the chronologically consistent region. Additionally, giant graviton probe branes experience repulson-type instabilities in the acausal region, suggesting a condensation of branes will modify the pathological part of the geometry to remove the closed timelike curves.

We use the results to calculate two transport coefficients, the bulk viscosity and conductivity, as well as the associated baryon diffusion constant, throughout the phase diagram. Near the critical point in the T-mu plane, the transport coefficients remain finite, although their derivatives diverge, and the diffusion goes to zero. This family has two parameters, one of which is associated to the temperature. We calculate two quantities, the speed of sound and the jet-quenching parameter. We find the speed of sound to be universal and robust over all the geometries when appropriate units are used, while the jet-quenching parameter varies significantly away from the conformal limit. We note that the overall structure of the jet-quenching depends strongly on whether the running scalar is the dilaton or not. We also discuss the variation of the scalar potential over our family of solutions, and truncate our results to where the associated error is small.

We find that depending on the relative size of various fluxes three things can occur: the decay process proceeds unhindered, the anti-D3-branes are forbidden to decay classically, or the entire space decompactifies. Additionally, we show that the Kahler modulus receives a contribution from the collective 3-brane tension. This allows for a significant change in compactified volume during the transition and possibly mitigates some fine tuning otherwise required to achieve large volume.

In the limit of large volume and long throat, we obtain vacua by imposing a constraint on the 7-brane embedding. These vacua fill out continuous spaces of higher dimension than the corresponding supersymmetric vacua, and have negative effective cosmological constant. Perturbative stability of these vacua is possible but not generic. Finally, we argue that anti-D3-branes at the tip of the conifold share the same vacua as D3-branes.

Metastable, supersymmetry-breaking configurations can be created in flux geometries by placing antibranes in warped throats. Via gauge/gravity duality, such configurations should have an interpretation as supersymmetry-breaking states in the dual field theory. In this paper, we perturbatively determine the asymptotic supergravity solutions corresponding to anti-D3-brane probes placed at the tip of the cascading warped deformed conifold geometry, which is dual to an SU(N+M) x SU(N) gauge theory. The backreaction of the antibranes has the effect of introducing imaginary anti-self-dual flux, squashing the compact part of the space and forcing the dilaton to run. Using the generalization of holographic renormalization to cascading geometries, we determine the expectation values of operators in the dual field theory in terms of the asymptotic values of the supergravity fields.

D3-branes away from these loci break supersymmetry spontaneously, by an F-term. We present the general conditions for supersymmetric D3-brane vacua in models with a single Kahler modulus, then explicitly calculate these vacua for D3-branes moving on the tip of the warped deformed conifold. We find both continuous moduli spaces and isolated vacua. In addition, we show that anti-D3-branes and D3-branes are localized to the same regions by the nonperturbative potential, avoiding a potential obstacle to brane inflation. We apply these results to determine whether angular motion of a brane in a throat could play an important role in inflation, and find that any inflation along the angular directions is short-lived because the field space is very small.

We study properties of flux vacua in type IIB string theory in several simple but illustrative models. We initiate the study of the relative frequencies of vacua with vanishing superpotential W=0 and with certain discrete symmetries. For the models we investigate we also compute the overall rate of growth of the number of vacua as a function of the D3-brane charge associated to the fluxes, and the distribution of vacua on the moduli space. The latter two questions can also be addressed by the statistical theory developed by Ashok, Denef and Douglas, and our results are in good agreement with their predictions. Analysis of the first two questions requires methods which are more number-theoretic in nature. We develop some elementary techniques of this type, which are based on arithmetic properties of the periods of the compactification geometry at the points in moduli space where the flux vacua are located.

Attracted to the bottom of a warped conifold throat, the anti-branes then cluster due to a novel mechanism wherein the background flux polarizes in an attempt to screen them. Once they are sufficiently close, the M units of flux cause the anti-branes to expand into a fuzzy NS5-brane, which for rather generic choices of p/M will unwrap around the geometry, decaying into D3-branes via a classical process. We find that the effective potential governing this evolution possesses several epochs that can potentially support slow-roll inflation, provided the process can be arranged to take place at a high enough energy scale, of about one or two orders of magnitude below the Planck energy; this scale, however, lies just outside the bounds of our approximations.

Unitarity of the 0B theory requires the inclusion of massless soliton sectors carrying RR scalar charge as asymptotic states. Gravity may be "locally localized" over a wide range of length scales on a d-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) brane living inside AdS_{d+1}. In this paper we examine this phenomenon from the point of view of the holographic dual "defect conformal field theory". The mode expansion of bulk fields on the gravity side is shown to be precisely dual to the "boundary operator product expansion" of operators as they approach the defect. From the field theory point of view, the condition for localization is that a "reduced operator" appearing in this expansion acquires negative anomalous dimension. In particular, a very light localized graviton exists when a mode arising from the reduction of the ambient stress-energy tensor to the defect has conformal dimension Delta ~ d-1. The part of the stress tensor containing the defect dynamics has dimension Delta = d-1 in the free theory, but we argue that it acquires an anomalous dimension in the interacting theory, and hence does not participate in localization in the regime of small backreaction of the brane. We demonstrate that such an anomalous dimension is consistent with the conservation of the full stress-energy tensor. Finally, we analyze how to compute the anomalous dimensions of reduced operators from gravity at leading order in the interactions with the brane.

Warped compactifications with branes provide a new approach to the hierarchy problem and generate a diversity of four-dimensional thresholds. We investigate the relationships between these scales, which fall into two classes. Geometrical scales, such as thresholds for Kaluza-Klein, excited string, and black hole production, are generically determined soley by the spacetime geometry. Dynamical scales, notably the scale of supersymmetry breaking and moduli masses, depend on other details of the model. We illustrate these relationships in a class of solutions of type IIB string theory with imaginary self-dual fluxes. After identifying the geometrical scales and the resulting hierarchy, we determine the gravitino and moduli masses through explicit dimensional reduction, and estimate their value to be near the four-dimensional Planck scale. In the process we obtain expressions for the superpotential and Kahler potential, including the effects of war**. We identify matter living on certain branes to be effectively sequestered from the supersymmetry breaking fluxes: specifically, such "visible sector" fields receive no tree-level masses from the supersymmetry breaking. However, loop corrections are expected to generate masses, at the phenomenologically viable TeV scale.

We propose a complete Lagrangian for the field theory dual, a novel "defect superconformal field theory" wherein a subset of the fields of N=4 SYM interacts with a d=3 SU(N) fundamental hypermultiplet on the defect preserving conformal invariance and 8 supercharges. The Kaluza-Klein reduction of wrapped D5 modes on AdS_4 x S^2 leads to towers of short representations of OSp(4|4), and we construct the map to a set of dual gauge-invariant defect operators O_3 possessing integer conformal dimensions. Gravity calculations of <O_4> and <O_4O_3> are given. Spacetime and N-dependence matches expectations from dCFT, while the behavior as functions of lambda = g^2 N at strong and weak coupling is generically different. We comment on a class of correlators for which a non-renormalization theorem may still exist. Partial evidence for the conformality of the quantum theory is given, including a complete argument for the special case of a U(1) gauge group. Some weak coupling arguments which illuminate the duality are presented.

We show that the general AdS_p x S^q vacuum is classically stable against small fluctuations, in the sense that all modes satisfy the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. In particular, the compactifications used in the recent discussion of the proposed bosonic M-theory are perturbatively stable. Our analysis treats all modes arising from the graviton and the q-form, and is completely independent of supersymmetry. From the masses of the linearized perturbations, we obtain the dimensions of some operators in possible holographic dual CFT's. Solutions with more general compact Einstein spaces need not be stable, and in particular AdS_p x S^n x S^{q-n} is unstable for q < 9 but is stable for q >= 9. We also study the AdS_4 x S^6 compactification of massive type IIA supergravity, which differs from the usual Freund-Rubin compactification in that there is a cosmological term already in ten dimensions. One solution is dual to D=4, N=4 SYM theory perturbed by an N=1, SO(3)-invariant mass term and the other to a Coulomb branch deformation. In the first case we study all SO(3)-singlet fields. These are assembled into bulk multiplets dual to the stress tensor multiplet and to the N=1 chiral multiplets Tr Phi^2 and Tr W^2, the former playing the role of anomaly multiplet. Each of these three multiplets has a distinct spectrum of "glueball" states. This behavior is contrasted with the Coulomb branch flow in which all fluctuations studied have a continuous spectrum above a common mass gap, and spontaneous breaking of conformal symmetry is driven by a bulk vector multiplet. R-symmetry is preserved in the field theory, and correspondingly the bulk vector is dual to a linear anomaly multiplet. Generic features of the fluctuation equations and solutions are emphasized. For example, the transverse traceless modes of all fields in the graviton multiplet can be expressed in terms of an auxiliary massless scalar, and gauge fields associated with R-symmetry have a universal effective mass.

We study the coupled equations describing fluctuations of scalars and the metric about background solutions of N=8 gauged supergravity which are dual to boundary field theories with renormalization group flow. For the case of a kink solution with a single varying scalar, we develop a procedure to decouple the equations, and we solve them in particular examples. However, difficulties occur in the calculation of correlation functions from the fluctuations, presumably because the AdS/CFT correspondence has not yet been properly implemented in the coupled scalar-gravity sector. Some new examples of correlators of operators dual to simpler uncoupled bulk scalars are given and are satisfactory. As byproducts of our study we make some observations relevant to the stability of domain walls in the brane-world scenario and to the Hamilton-Jacobi formulation of holographic RG flows.

A method for obtaining solutions to the classical equations for scalars plus gravity in five dimensions is applied to some recent suggestions for brane-world phenomenology. The method involves only first order differential equations. It is inspired by gauged supergravity but does not require supersymmetry. Our first application is a full non-linear treatment of a recently studied stabilization mechanism for inter-brane spacing. The spacing is uniquely determined after conventional fine-tuning to achieve zero four-dimensional cosmological constant. If the fine-tuning is imperfect, there are solutions in which the four-dimensional branes are de Sitter or anti-de Sitter spacetimes. Our second application is a construction of smooth domain wall solutions which in a well-defined limit approach any desired array of sharply localized positive-tension branes. As an offshoot of the analysis we suggest a construction of a supergravity c-function for non-supersymmetric four-dimensional renormalization group flows.
The equations for fluctuations about an arbitrary scalar-gravity background are also studied. It is shown that all models in which the fifth dimension is effectively compactified contain a massless graviton. The graviton is the constant mode in the fifth dimension. The separated wave equation can be recast into the form of supersymmetric quantum mechanics. The graviton wave-function is then the supersymmetric ground state, and there are no tachyons.

The Kodaira list of finite Lie algebras completely fills the elliptic classes as well as some parabolic classes. Loop algebras of E_N fill additional parabolic classes, and exotic finite algebras, hyperbolic extensions of E_N and more general indefinite Lie algebras fill the hyperbolic classes. Since they correspond to brane configurations that cannot be made into strict singularities, these non-Kodaira algebras are spectrum generating and organize towers of massive BPS states into representations. The smallest brane configuration with unit monodromy gives rise to the loop algebra \hat{E}_9 which plays a central role in the theory. We elucidate the patterns of enhancement relating E_8, E_9, \hat{E}_9 and E_10. We examine configurations of 24 7-branes relevant to type IIB compactifications on a two-sphere, or F-theory on K3. A particularly symmetric configuration separates the 7-branes into two groups of twelve branes and the massive BPS spectrum is organized by E_10 + E_10.

These include not just the Kodaira symmetries that occur when branes coalesce into a singularity, but also algebras associated to other physically interesting brane configurations that cannot be collapsed. We demonstrate how the monodromy around the 7-branes essentially determines the algebra, and thus 7-brane gauge symmetries are classified by conjugacy classes of the modular group SL(2,Z). Through a classic map between the modular group and binary quadratic forms, the monodromy fixes the asymptotic charge form which determines the representations of the various (p,q) dyons in probe D3-brane theories. This quadratic form also controls the change in the algebra during transitions between different brane configurations. We give a unified description of the brane configurations extending the D_N, E_N and Argyres-Douglas H_N series beyond the Kodaira cases. We anticipate the appearance of affine and indefinite infinite-dimensional algebras, which we explore in a sequel paper.

The existence of the affine algebra is signaled by the presence of the imaginary root junction ``delta'', which is realized as a string encircling the 7-brane configuration. The level k of an affine representation partially constrains the asymptotic (p,q) charges of string junctions departing the configuration. The junction intersection form reproduces the full affine inner product, plus terms in the asymptotic charges.

Abstract:
BPS states of N=2, D=4 Super Yang-Mills theories with ADE flavor symmetry arise as junctions joining a D3-brane to a set of 7-branes defining the enhanced flavor algebra. We show that the familiar BPS spectrum of SU(2) theories with N_f <= 4 is simply given by the set of junctions whose self-intersection is bounded below as required by supersymmetry. This constraint, together with the relations…

This constraint, together with the relations between junction and weight lattices, is used to establish the appearance of arbitrarily large flavor representations for the case of D_{n>=5} and E_n symmetries. Such representations are required by consistency with decoupling down to smaller flavor symmetries.

String Junctions for Arbitrary Lie Algebra Representations

Abstract:
We consider string junctions with endpoints on a set of branes of IIB string theory defining an ADE-type gauge Lie algebra. We show how to characterize uniquely equivalence classes of junctions related by string/brane crossing through invariant charges that count the effective number of prongs ending on each brane. Each equivalence class defines a point on a lattice of junctions. We define a met…

We define a metric on this lattice arising from the intersection pairing of junctions, and use self-intersection to identify junctions in the adjoint and fundamental representations of all ADE algebras. This information suffices to determine the relation between junction lattices and the Lie-algebra weight lattices. Arbitrary representations are built by allowing junctions with asymptotic (p,q) charges, on which the group of conjugacy classes of representations is represented additively. One can view the (p,q) asymptotic charges as Dynkin labels associated to two new fundamental weight vectors.

Minimal Area Nonorientable String Diagrams
Authors:

Abstract:
We use minimal area metrics to generate all nonorientable string diagrams. The surfaces in unoriented string theory have nontrivial open curves and nontrivial closed curves whose neighborhoods are either annuli or Mobius strips. We define a minimal area problem by imposing length conditions on open curves and on annular closed curves only. We verify that the minimal area conditions are respected…

We verify that the minimal area conditions are respected by the sewing operations. The natural objects that satisfy recursion relations involving the propagator, which performs both orientable and nonorientable sewing, are classes of moduli spaces grouped by Euler characteristic.
