Finding innovative solutions to complex problems is often about finding people who have access to novel information and alternative viewpoints. Research has found that most people are connected to each other through just a few degrees of separation, but successful social search is often difficult because it depends on people using their weak ties to make connections to distant social networks. Recursive incentive schemes have shown promise for social search by motivating people to use their weak ties to find distant targets, such as specific people or even weather balloons placed at undisclosed locations. Here, we report on a case study of a similar recursive incentive scheme for finding innovative ideas. Specifically, we implemented a competition to reward individuals(s) who helped refer Grand Prize winner(s) in MIT's Climate CoLab, an open innovation platform for addressing global climate change. Using data on over 78,000 CoLab members and over 36,000 people from over 100 countries who engaged with the referral contest, we find that people who are referred using this method are more likely than others to submit proposals and to submit high quality proposals. Furthermore, we find suggestive evidence that among the contributors referred via the contest, those who had more than one degree of separation from a pre-existing CoLab member were more likely to submit high quality proposals. Thus, the results from this case study are consistent the theory that people from distant networks are more likely to provide innovative solutions to complex problems. More broadly, the results suggest that rewarding indirect intermediaries in addition to final finders may promote effective social network recruitment.

Predicting unscheduled breakdowns of plasma etching equipment can reduce maintenance costs and production losses in the semiconductor industry. However, plasma etching is a complex procedure and it is hard to capture all relevant equipment properties and behaviors in a single physical model. Machine learning offers an alternative for predicting upcoming machine failures based on relevant data points. In this paper, we describe three different machine learning tasks that can be used for that purpose: (i) predicting Time-To-Failure (TTF), (ii) predicting health state, and (iii) predicting TTF intervals of an equipment. Our results show that trained machine learning models can outperform benchmarks resembling human judgments in all three tasks. This suggests that machine learning offers a viable alternative to currently deployed plasma etching equipment maintenance strategies and decision making processes.

We introduce Path-ZVA: an efficient simulation technique for estimating the probability of reaching a rare goal state before a regeneration state in a (discrete-time) Markov chain. Standard Monte Carlo simulation techniques do not work well for rare events, so we use importance sampling; i.e., we change the probability measure governing the Markov chain such that transitions `towards' the goal state become more likely. To do this we need an idea of distance to the goal state, so some level of knowledge of the Markov chain is required. In this paper, we use graph analysis to obtain this knowledge. In particular, we focus on knowledge of the shortest paths (in terms of `rare' transitions) to the goal state. We show that only a subset of the (possibly huge) state space needs to be considered. This is effective when the high dependability of the system is primarily due to high component reliability, but less so when it is due to high redundancies. For several models we compare our results to well-known importance sampling methods from the literature and demonstrate the large potential gains of our method.

A detailed review of the literature for the last 5-10 years on epitaxial growth of graphene is presented. Both experimental and theoretical aspects related to growth on transition metals and on silicon carbide are thoroughly reviewed. Thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of growth on all these materials, where possible, are discussed. To make this text useful for a wider audience, a range of important experimental techniques that have been used over the last decade to grow (e.g. CVD, TPG and segregation) and characterize (STM, LEEM, etc.) graphene are reviewed, and a critical survey of the most important theoretical techniques is given. Finally, we critically discuss various unsolved problems related to growth and its mechanism which we believe require proper attention in future research.

In this paper we study the differences in historical World View between Western and Eastern cultures, represented through the English, the Chinese, Japanese, and German Wikipedia. In particular, we analyze the historical networks of the World's leaders since the beginning of written history, comparing them in the different Wikipedias and assessing cultural chauvinism. We also identify the most influential female leaders of all times in the English, German, Spanish, and Portuguese Wikipedia. As an additional lens into the soul of a culture we compare top terms, sentiment, emotionality, and complexity of the English, Portuguese, Spanish, and German Wikinews.

Surface Screening Charge and Effective Charge

The charge on an atom at a metallic surface in an electric field is defined as the field-derivative of the force on the atom, and this is consistent with definitions of effective charge and screening charge. This charge can be found from the shift in the potential outside the surface when the atoms are moved. This is used to study forces and screening on surface atoms of Ag(001) c$(2\times 2)$ -- Xe as a function of external field. It is found that at low positive (outward) fields, the Xe with a negative effective charge of -0.093 $|{e}|$ is pushed into the surface. At a field of 2.3 V Å$^{-1}$ the charge changes sign, and for fields greater than 4.1 V Å$^{-1}$ the Xe experiences an outward force. Field desorption and the Eigler switch are discussed in terms of these results.
