Dating of a Latin astrolabe

Abstract: We have determined the most probable date for the catalog of 34 stars that was used in the construction of a Latin astrolabe originally owned by the Dominican preacher friars and presently at Musée des Arts précieux Paul-Dupuy (Toulouse, France). To this end we digitized a photograph of the rete and the rule of the astrolabe, computed the equatorial coordinates of the ends of the 34 star pointers… ▽ More We have determined the most probable date for the catalog of 34 stars that was used in the construction of a Latin astrolabe originally owned by the Dominican preacher friars and presently at Musée des Arts précieux Paul-Dupuy (Toulouse, France). To this end we digitized a photograph of the rete and the rule of the astrolabe, computed the equatorial coordinates of the ends of the 34 star pointers of the rete, and produced a list of 113 reference stars taken from several lists of stars on astrolabes. Multivariate analysis of the globular clusters in M87

Next K-means cluster analysis is applied on the independent components, to find the optimum number of homogeneous groups having an underlying structure. The properties of the four groups of globular clusters thus uncovered are used to explain the formation mechanism of the host galaxy. It is suggested that M87 formed in two successive phases. First a monolithic collapse, which gave rise to an inner group of metal-rich clusters with little systematic rotation and an outer group of metal-poor clusters in eccentric orbits. In a second phase, the galaxy accreted low-mass satellites in a dissipationless fashion, from the gas of which the two other groups of globular clusters formed. Evidence is given {\bf for a blue stellar population in the more metal rich clusters, which we interpret by Helium enrichment.} Finally, it is found that the clusters of M87 differ in some of their chemical properties (NaD, TiO1, light element abundances) from globular clusters in our Galaxy and M31. △ Less

Stellar populations in $ω$ Centauri: a multivariate analysis

The statistical analysis of a sample of 735 stars based on seven chemical abundances with the method of Maximum Parsimony (cladistics) yields the most promising results: seven groups are found, distributed along three branches with distinct chemical, spatial and kinematical properties. A progressive chemical evolution can be traced from one group to the next, but also within groups, suggestive of an inhomogeneous chemical enrichment of the initial interstellar matter. The adjustment of stellar evolution models shows that the groups with metallicities [Fe/H]\textgreater{}-1.5 are Helium-enriched, thus presumably of second generation. The spatial concentration of the groups increases with chemical evolution, except for two groups, which stand out in their other properties as well. The amplitude of rotation decreases with chemical evolution, except for two of the three metal-rich groups, which rotate fastest, as predicted by recent hydrodynamical simulations. The properties of the groups are interpreted in terms of star formation in gas clouds of different origins. In conclusion, our multivariate analysis has shown that metallicity alone cannot segregate the different populations of $ω$ Centauri. △ Less

Medium resolution spectroscopy and chemical composition of Galactic globular clusters

We used medium-resolution spectra of globular clusters published by Schiavon et al. (2005), as well as our long-slit observations with the 1.93 m telescope of the Haute Provence Observatory.… ▽ More We used integrated-light medium-resolution spectra of six Galactic globular clusters and model stellar atmospheres to carry out population synthesis and to derive chemical composition and age of the clusters. We used medium-resolution spectra of globular clusters published by Schiavon et al. (2005), as well as our long-slit observations with the 1.93 m telescope of the Haute Provence Observatory. The observed spectra were fitted to the theoretical ones interactively. As an initial approach, we used masses, radii and log g of stars in the clusters corresponding to the best fitting isochrones in the observed color-magnitude diagrams. The computed synthetic blanketed spectra of stars were summed according to the Chabrier mass function. To improve the determination of age and helium content, the shape and depth of the Balmer absorption lines was analysed. The abundances of Mg, Ca, C and several other elements were derived. A reasonable agreement with the literature data both in chemical composition and in age of the clusters is found. Our method might be useful for the development of stellar population models and for a better understanding of extragalactic star clusters. △ Less

Gemini spectroscopy of the outer disk star cluster BH176

Abstract: BH176 is an old metal-rich star cluster. It is spatially and kinematically consistent with belonging to the Monoceros Ring. It is larger in size and more distant from the Galactic plane than typical open clusters, and it does not belong to the Galactic bulge. Our aim is to determine the origin of this unique object by accurately determining its distance, metallicity, and age. The best way to reach… ▽ More BH176 is an old metal-rich star cluster. It is spatially and kinematically consistent with belonging to the Monoceros Ring. It is larger in size and more distant from the Galactic plane than typical open clusters, and it does not belong to the Galactic bulge. Our aim is to determine the origin of this unique object by accurately determining its distance, metallicity, and age. The best way to reach this goal is to combine spectroscopic and photometric methods. We present medium-resolution observations of red clump and red giant branch stars in BH176 obtained with the Gemini South Multi-Object Spectrograph.We derive radial velocities, metallicities, effective temperatures, and surface gravities of the observed stars and use these parameters to distinguish member stars from field objects. We determine the following parameters for BH176: $V_h= 0\pm 15$ km/s, $[Fe/H]=-0.1\pm 0.1$, age $7\pm 0.5$ Gyr, $E(V-I)=0.79\pm 0.03$, distance $ 15.2\pm 0.2$ kpc, $α$-element abundance $[α/Fe] \sim 0.25$ dex (the mean of [Mg/Fe], and [Ca/Fe]). BH176 is a member of old Galactic open clusters that presumably belong to the thick disk. It may have originated as a massive star cluster after the encounter of the forming thin disk with a high-velocity gas cloud or as a satellite dwarf galaxy. △ Less

Formation of dwarf ellipticals and dwarf irregular galaxies by interaction of giant galaxies under environmental influence

(2004), such that for theta less… ▽ More A model is proposed for the formation of gas-rich dwarf irregular galaxies and gas-poor, rotating dwarf elliptical galaxies following the interaction between two giant galaxies as a function of space density. The formation of dwarf galaxies is considered to depend on a random variable, the tidal index theta, an environmental parameter defined by Karachentsev et al. (2004), such that for theta less than zero, the formation of dwarf irregular galaxy is assured whereas for theta greater than zero, the formation of dwarf ellipticals is preferred. It is found that for particular ranges of the interactive parameters the model predictions are in good agreement with the observed number density of the different galaxy types as a function of space density in four clusters of galaxies. This supports the fact that galaxy interactions do not all necessarily give rise to the formation of either dwarf irregulars or dwarf ellipticals. It is also shown that the formation of dwarf irregulars at high densities is much lower than that of dwarf ellipticals, and that the formation of the latter reaches a maximum at a particular space density, unlike the former. This suggests that at high densities many dwarf irregulars are stripped of their gaseous envelopes to become dwarf elliptical. △ Less

Modeling and Analysis of a Spectrum of the Globular Cluster NGC 2419

Abstract: NGC 2419 is the most distant massive globular cluster in the outer Galactic halo. It is unusual also due to the chemical peculiarities found in its red giant stars in recent years. We study the stellar population of this unusual object using spectra obtained at the 1.93-m telescope of the Haute-Provence Observatory. At variance with commonly used methods of high-resolution spectroscopy applicable… ▽ More NGC 2419 is the most distant massive globular cluster in the outer Galactic halo. It is unusual also due to the chemical peculiarities found in its red giant stars in recent years. We study the stellar population of this unusual object using spectra obtained at the 1.93-m telescope of the Haute-Provence Observatory. At variance with commonly used methods of high-resolution spectroscopy applicable only to bright stars, we employ spectroscopic information on the integrated light of the cluster. We carry out population synthesis modeling of medium-resolution spectra using synthetic stellar atmosphere models based on a theoretical isochrone corresponding accurately to the observed color-magnitude diagram. We study the influence of non-Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium for some chemical elements on our results. The derived age (12.6 Gyr), [Fe/H]=-2.25 dex, helium content Y=0.25, and abundances of 12 other chemical elements are in a good qualitative agreement with published high-resolution spectroscopy estimates for red giant members in the cluster. On the other hand, the derived element abundance, [alpha/Fe]=0.13 dex (the mean of [O/Fe], [Mg/Fe] and [Ca/Fe]), differs from the published one ([alpha/Fe] =0.4 dex) for selected red giants in the cluster and may be explained by a large dispersion in the alpha-element abundances recently discovered in NGC2419. We suggest that studies of the {\it integrated} light in the cluster using high-resolution spectrographs in different wavelength regions will help to understand the nature of these chemical anomalies. △ Less

Claude Pouillet (1790-1868), a physics professor, was the first to measure… ▽ More We provide a brief biography of seven French astronomers and physicists and of a Russian astronomer from the 19th and 20th centuries. Roger Bouigue (1920-) was the director of Toulouse Observatory in the 1960s. Claude-Louis Mathieu (1783-1875), a member of Bureau des Longitudes, worked in geodetics and celestial mechanics. Claude Pouillet (1790-1868), a physics professor, was the first to measure the solar constant. Yves Rocard (1903-1992) conducted research in many fields of physics, and founded the radioastronomy Observatory of Nancay. Jean Rosch (1915-1999) was the director of Pic du Midi Observatory for over thirty years, and in this capacity lead it to the forefront of research in high-resolution solar and planetary astronomy. Cyrille Souillart (1828-1898) had a lifelong interest in the theory of Jupiter's satellites. Jules Violle (1841- 1923) was a physics professor who determined the temperature of the solar photosphere. A search for RCB stars in globular clusters

Abstract: There are only about 65 R Coronae Borealis stars known in our Galaxy, and none in globular clusters. As these stars are thought to result from the merger of two white dwarfs, one would expect the higher stellar density of globular clusters to favor their formation. We have searched for such stars in Galactic globular clusters, as their presence in a specific category of clusters might provide more… ▽ More There are only about 65 R Coronae Borealis stars known in our Galaxy, and none in globular clusters. As these stars are thought to result from the merger of two white dwarfs, one would expect the higher stellar density of globular clusters to favor their formation. We have searched for such stars in Galactic globular clusters, as their presence in a specific category of clusters might provide more clues as to their formation. We selected from the WISE all-Sky source catalog all the stars within the tidal radius of the 150 globular clusters within 50 kpc, which is the distance to which RCB stars are detectable by WISE. The total number of stars selected in this way was 635989. We then successively applied the eight selection criteria of Tisserand (2012) satisfied by RCB stars to the dereddened photometric WISE and 2MASS data. Only three stars satisfying the conditions were found in the field of three globular clusters. The star in the field of Liller 1 is most probably a protostar. For the two other candidates, the absence of photometry in the visible range did not allow us to establish their nature with certainty. We further identified one dust-enshrouded star that only satisfied the first selection criteria, and used DUSTY to determine that it is a star of temperature 4800K enshrouded in a dusty envelope with a temperature 300 K and an opacity in the visible of 0.59. It is probably an Xray binary star with a dusty accretion disk. We found no RCB stars truly belonging to a globular cluster, thus providing a constraint on their formation mechanism. △ Less

A CH star in the globular cluster NGC 6426

A six-parameter space to describe galaxy diversification

Abstract: Galaxy diversification proceeds by transforming events like accretion, interaction or mergers. These explain the formation and evolution of galaxies that can now be described with many observables. Multivariate analyses are the obvious tools to tackle the datasets and understand the differences between different kinds of objects. However, depending on the method used, redundancies, incompatibiliti… ▽ More Galaxy diversification proceeds by transforming events like accretion, interaction or mergers. These explain the formation and evolution of galaxies that can now be described with many observables. Multivariate analyses are the obvious tools to tackle the datasets and understand the differences between different kinds of objects. However, depending on the method used, redundancies, incompatibilities or subjective choices of the parameters can void the usefulness of such analyses. The behaviour of the available parameters should be analysed before an objective reduction of dimensionality and subsequent clustering analyses can be undertaken, especially in an evolutionary context. We study a sample of 424 early-type galaxies described by 25 parameters, ten of which are Lick indices, to identify the most structuring parameters and determine an evolutionary classification of these objects. Four independent statistical methods are used to investigate the discriminant properties of the observables and the partitioning of the 424 galaxies: Principal Component Analysis, K-means cluster analysis, Minimum Contradiction Analysis and Cladistics. Uncovering the formation of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies by multivariate statistical analysis

Abstract: We present a statistical analysis of the properties of a large sample of dynamically hot old stellar systems, from globular clusters to giant ellipticals, which was performed in order to investigate the origin of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies. The data were mostly drawn from Forbes et al. (2008). We recalculated some of the effective radii, computed mean surface brightnesses and mass-to-light-ratio… ▽ More We present a statistical analysis of the properties of a large sample of dynamically hot old stellar systems, from globular clusters to giant ellipticals, which was performed in order to investigate the origin of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies. The data were mostly drawn from Forbes et al. (2008). We recalculated some of the effective radii, computed mean surface brightnesses and mass-to-light-ratios, estimated ages and metallicities. We completed the sample with globular clusters of M31. We used a multivariate statistical technique (K-Means clustering), together with a new algorithm (Gap Statistics) for finding the optimum number of homogeneous sub-groups in the sample, using a total of six parameters (absolute magnitude, effective radius, virial mass-to-light ratio, stellar mass-to-light ratio and metallicity). We found six groups. FK1 and FK5 are composed of high- and low-mass elliptical galaxies respectively. FK3 and FK6 are composed of high-metallicity and low-metallicity objects, respectively, and both include globular clusters and ultra-compact dwarf galaxies. Two very small groups, FK2 and FK4, are composed of Local Group dwarf spheroidals. Our groups differ in their mean masses and virial mass-to-light ratios. The relations between these two parameters are also different for the various groups. The probability density distributions of metallicity for the four groups of galaxies is similar to that of the globular clusters and UCDs. The brightest low-metallicity globular clusters and ultra-compact dwarf galaxies tend to follow the mass-metallicity relation like elliptical galaxies. The objects of FK3 are more metal-rich per unit effective luminosity density than high-mass ellipticals. △ Less

One blind and three targeted searches for (sub)millisecond pulsars

The blind search was conducted within 3deg of the Galactic plane and at longitudes between 20 and 110deg. It takes 22073 pointings to cover this region, and 5487 different positions in the sky. The first targeted search was aimed at Galactic globular clusters, the second one at 24 bright polarized and pointlike radiosources with steep spectra, and the third at 65 faint polarized and pointlike radiosources. The observations were conducted at the large radiotelescope of Nancay Observatory, at a frequency near 1400 MHz. Two successive backends were used, first a VLBI S2 system, second a digital acquisition board and a PC with large storage capacity sampling the signal at 50 Mb/s on one bit, over a 24-MHz band and in one polarization. The bandwidth of acquisition of the second backend was later increased to 48 MHz and the sampling rate to 100 Mb/s. The survey used the three successive setups, with respective sensitivities of 3.5, 2.2, and 1.7 mJy. The targeted-search data were obtained with the third setup and reduced with a method based on the Hough transform, yielding a sensitivity of 0.9 mJy. The processing of the data was done in slightly differed time by soft-correlation in all cases. No new short-period millisecond pulsars were discovered in the different searches. To better understand the null result of the blind survey, we estimate the probability of detecting one or more short-period pulsars among a given Galactic population of synthetic pulsars with our setup: 25% for the actual incomplete survey and 79% if we had completed the whole survey with a uniform nominal sensitivity of 1.7 mJy. The alternative of surveying a smaller, presumably more densely populated, region with a higher sensitivity would have a low return and would be impractical at a transit instrument. Structures in the fundamental plane of early-type galaxies

Instead of selecting… ▽ More The fundamental plane of early-type galaxies is a rather tight three-parameter correlation discovered more than twenty years ago. It has resisted a both global and precise physical interpretation despite a consequent number of works, observational, theoretical or using numerical simulations. It appears that its precise properties depend on the population of galaxies in study. Instead of selecting a priori these populations, we propose to objectively construct homologous populations from multivariate analyses. We have undertaken multivariate cluster and cladistic analyses of a sample of 56 low-redshift galaxy clusters containing 699 early-type galaxies, using four parameters: effective radius, velocity dispersion, surface brightness averaged over effective radius, and Mg2 index. All our analyses are consistent with seven groups that define separate regions on the global fundamental plane, not across its thickness. In fact, each group shows its own fundamental plane, which is more loosely defined for less diversified groups. We conclude that the global fundamental plane is not a bent surface, but made of a collection of several groups characterizing several fundamental planes with different thicknesses and orientations in the parameter space. Our diversification scenario probably indicates that the level of diversity is linked to the number and the nature of transforming events and that the fundamental plane is the result of several transforming events. We also show that our classification, not the fundamental planes, is universal within our redshift range (0.007 - 0.053). We find that the three groups with the thinnest fundamental planes presumably formed through dissipative (wet) mergers. In one of them, this(ese) merger(s) must have been quite ancient because of the relatively low metallicity of its galaxies, Two of these groups have subsequently undergone dry mergers to increase their masses. In the k-space, the third one clearly occupies the region where bulges (of lenticular or spiral galaxies) lie and might also have formed through minor mergers and accretions. The two least diversified groups probably did not form by major mergers and must have been strongly affected by interactions, some of the gas in the objects of one of these groups having possibly been swept out. The interpretation, based on specific assembly histories of galaxies of our seven groups, shows that they are truly homologous. They were obtained directly from several observables, thus independently of any a priori classification. The diversification scenario relating these groups does not depend on models or numerical simulations, but is objectively provided by the cladistic analysis. Consequently, our classification is more easily compared to models and numerical simulations, and our work can be readily repeated with additional observables. △ Less

SAO-6m Telescope Spectroscopic Observations of Globular Clusters in Nearby Galaxies

We found that all old and intermediate-age GCs in our sample have low metallicities [Z/H] < -0.8 dex. Metal-rich clusters are young and are preferentially found in galaxies more massive than ~10^9 M_sun. The least massive dwarfs of our sample, DDO71 and HolmbergIX, host one massive intermediate-age and one massive young metal-poor GC, respectively. [a/Fe] abundance ratios tend to be enhanced but closer to solar values for dwarf galaxies compared to GCs in more massive galaxies. We analyse the age-metallicity relation for GCs in our galaxy sample and others from the literature, and find, that 1) there is a general trend for GCs in low surface brightness dwarf galaxies to be more metal-poor at a given age than GCs in more massive galaxies; 2) the GC metallicity spread is wider for more massive galaxies; 3) intermediate-age GCs in early-type dwarf galaxies are more metal-rich at any given age than those in irregular galaxies of similar luminosity. △ Less

The optimum set of parameters for this type of analysis is selected through a modified technique of Principal Component Analysis, which differs from the classical one in the sense that it takes into consideration the effects of outliers present in the data. Then a mixture model based approach has been used to classify the globular clusters into groups. The efficiency of the techniques used is tested through the comparison of the misclassification probabilities with those obtained using the K-means clustering technique. On the basis of the above classification scheme three coherent groups of globular clusters have been found. We propose that the clusters of one group originated in the original cluster formation event that coincided with the formation of the elliptical galaxy, and that the clusters of the two other groups are of external origin, from tidally stripped dwarf galaxies on random orbits around NGC 5128 for one group, and from an accreted spiral galaxy for the other. △ Less

The environment of formation as a second parameter for globular cluster classification

Our cladistic analysis breaks the sample into three novel groups. An a posteriori kinematical analysis puts groups 1 and 2 in the halo, and group 3 in the thick disc. The halo and disc clusters separately follow a luminosity-metallicity relation of much weaker slope than galaxies. This property is used to propose a new criterion for distinguishing halo and disc clusters. A comparison of the distinct properties of the two halo groups with those of Galactic halo field stars indicates that the clusters of group 1 originated in the inner halo, while those of group 2 formed in the outer halo of the Galaxy. The inner halo clusters were presumably initially the most massive one, which allowed the formation of more strongly helium-enriched second generation stars, thus explaining the presence of Cepheids and of very hot horizontal-branch stars exclusively in this group. We thus conclude that the "second parameter" is linked to the environment in which globular clusters form, the inner halo favouring the formation of the most massive clusters which subsequently become more strongly self-enriched than their counterparts of the galactic outer halo and disc. △ Less

This conceptual framework is first applied to the history of the 80-cm telescope of Toulouse Observatory, which is initially anchored in a general-purpose regime linked to astrometry. After a transition in the 1930s, it is integrated in a dedicated regime centered on astrophysics. This evolution is compared to that of a very similar instrument, the 80-cm telescope of Marseille Observatory, which converts early on to the dedicated regime with the Fabry-Perot interferometer around 1910, and, after a period of idleness, is again used in the survey mode after WWII. To further validate our new concept, we apply it to the telescopes of Washburn Observatory, of Dominion Astrophysical Observatory and of Meudon Observatory. The uses of the different telescopes illustrate various combinations of the two regimes, which can be successive, simultaneous or alternating. Globular cluster content and evolutionary history of NGC147

Our goal is to make a complete inventory of the globular cluster system of this galaxy, determine the properties of their stellar populations, and compare these properties with those of systems of globular clusters in other dwarf galaxies. The candidate… ▽ More We present the results of spectroscopic observations of eight globular cluster candidates in NGC147, a satellite dwarf elliptical galaxy of M31. Our goal is to make a complete inventory of the globular cluster system of this galaxy, determine the properties of their stellar populations, and compare these properties with those of systems of globular clusters in other dwarf galaxies. The candidates were identified on Canada-France-Hawaii telescope photographic plates. Medium resolution spectra were obtained with the SCORPIO spectrograph at the prime focus of the 6m telescope of the Russian Academy of Sciences. We were able to confirm the nature of all eight candidates, three of which (GC5, GC7, and GC10) are indeed globular clusters, and to estimate evolutionary parameters for the two brightest ones and for Hodge II. The bright clusters GC5 and GC7 appear to have metallicities ([Z/H]~ -1.5- -1.8) that are lower than the oldest stars in the galaxy. The fainter GC Hodge II has a metallicity [Z/H]=-1.1 dex, similar to that of the oldest stars in the galaxy. The clusters GC5 and GC7 have low alpha-element abundance ratios. The mean age of the globular clusters in NGC147 is 9+-1 Gyr. The frequency, S_n =6.4, and mass fraction, T=14 of globular clusters in NGC147 appear to be higher than those for NGC185 and 205. A method for determining radio continuum spectra, and its application to large surveys

Starbursts in barred spiral galaxies. VI. HI observations and the K-band Tully-Fisher relation

These measurements are complemented by data from the literature to form a sample of 105 unbarred and 113 barred Mrk IRAS galaxies. Barred galaxies have lower total and bias-corrected HI masses than unbarred galaxies, and this is true for both Mrk IRAS and normal galaxies. This robust result suggests that bars funnel the HI gas toward the center of the galaxy where it becomes molecular before forming new stars. The Mrk IRAS galaxies have higher bias-corrected HI masses than normal galaxies. They also show significant departures from the TF relation, both in the B and K bands. The most deviant points from the TF relation tend to have a strong far-infrared luminosity and a low oxygen abundance. These results suggest that a fraction of our Mrk IRAS galaxies are still in the process of formation, and that their neutral HI gas, partly of external origin, has not yet reached a stationary state. △ Less

A Molecular Gas Bridge between the Taffy Galaxies

Finally, we show that the Markarian starburst galaxies do not seem to follow the local Tully--Fisher relation. Various alternatives are examined to explain the deficiency of bars and the small disk dimensions in Markarian starburst galaxies. Th… ▽ More The oxygen (O/H) and N/O abundance ratios along the bar of 16 barred spiral starburst galaxies are determined using long-slit spectroscopy. The abundance gradients and the spatial distribution of the ionized gas along the bar are used to understand the role of bars in starburst galaxies. The oxygen abundance gradients are steeper than in normal barred galaxies, while the intersects are low. This excludes the possibility that these are chemically evolved galaxies rejuvenated by the effect of a bar. The nitrogen-to-oxygen abundance gradients are flatter than the oxygen ones. But N/O intersects are high, which rules out the possibility that a large quantity of gas was recently funneled by a bar toward the center of a young galaxy. Bars, therefore, cannot be at the origin of the bursts in the nuclei of our sample galaxies. The oxygen and N/O abundance gradients are generally stronger in the bar than in the disk and are linked together by a linear relation. This can be fully explained in terms of star formation history: the gradients build up from the inside out, becoming stronger as the oxygen and N/O abundances increase in the bulge while staying low in the disk. In many of the sample galaxies, star formation occurs at one or both ends of the bar. The low level of chemical enrichment in these regions suggests that they recently experienced bar-triggered star formation: this is the only visible effect of bars. Our analysis shows that bars probably appeared very recently (a few 10^7 years) in the starburst galaxies, which are relatively "young" galaxies still in the process of formation.(Abridged) △ Less

For each object (star or galaxy) we provide aperture magnitudes computed within five different apertures, the magnitude within the 22 mag arcsec2 isophote, the Kron magnitude and radius, magnitude errors, as well as the coordinates, the isophotal area, and a stellarity index. On a cosmological scale, this time interval corresponds to redshifts z = 0.2-0.3, where a significant increase of star formation activity occurred. We find that galaxies with very long bars are mostly active and that normal late-type galaxies have a distinct behavior from the three other groups of galaxies. We confirm earlier findings that active late-type galaxies tend to have both stronger and longer bars than normal ones. An important result of this paper is that early-type galaxies do not share this behavior : they all tend to have strong bars, whether they are active or not. We also find correlations between bar strength and relative surface brightness in the middle and at the edge of the bar, which are not followed by normal late-type galaxies. These results are interpreted in the light of recent numerical simulations and paradigms about galaxy evolution. They suggest that normal late-type galaxies represent the first stage of galaxy evolution, and that bars in early- and late-type galaxies do not have the same properties because they have a different origin. △ Less

The PDS starburst galaxies

They have flux density of moderate or high quality at 12, 25 and 60 $μ$m and spectral indices in the ranges $-3.00 \leq α(25,12) \leq +0.35$ and $-2.50 \leq α(60,25) \leq +0.85$. These criteria allowed the detection… ▽ More (Abridged) We discuss the nature of the galaxies found in the Pico dos Dias Survey (PDS) for young stellar objects. The PDS galaxies were selected from the IRAS Point Source catalog. They have flux density of moderate or high quality at 12, 25 and 60 $μ$m and spectral indices in the ranges $-3.00 \leq α(25,12) \leq +0.35$ and $-2.50 \leq α(60,25) \leq +0.85$. These criteria allowed the detection of 382 galaxies, which are a mixture of starburst and Seyfert galaxies. The starburst galaxies show an excess of FIR luminosity and their IRAS colors are significantly different from those of Seyfert galaxies -- 99% of the starburst galaxies in our sample have a spectral index $α(60,25) < -1.9$. As opposed to Seyfert galaxies, very few PDS starbursts are detected in X-rays. In the infrared, the starburst galaxies form a continuous sequence with normal galaxies. But they generally can be distinguished from normal galaxies by their spectral index $α(60,25) > -2.5$. This color cut--off also marks a change in the dominant morphologies of the galaxies: the normal IRAS galaxies are preferentially late--type spirals (Sb and later), while the starbursts are more numerous among early--type spirals (earlier than Sbc). No difference is found between the starbursts detected in the FIR and those detected on the basis of UV excess. The PDS starburst galaxies represent the FIR luminous branch of the UV-bright starburst nucleus galaxies, with mean FIR luminosity $\log({\rm L}_{\rm IR}/{\rm L}_\odot) = 10.3 \pm 0.5$ and redshifts smaller than 0.1. They form a complete sample limited in flux in the FIR at $2\times10^{-10}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. △ Less

Our selection criteria have been very efficient for selecting star-forming galaxi… ▽ More This paper presents optical long-slit spectroscopic observations of 105 barred Markarian IRAS galaxies. These observations are used to determine the spectral type of emission-line regions in the nucleus and along the bar of the galaxies, in order to define a homogeneous sample of Starburst Nucleus Galaxies (SBNGs). Our selection criteria have been very efficient for selecting star-forming galaxies, since our sample of 221 emission-line regions includes 82% nuclear or extranuclear starbursts. The contamination by Seyferts is low (9%). The remaining galaxies (9%) are objects with ambiguous classification (HII or LINER). The dust content and Halpha luminosity increase towards the nuclei of the galaxies. No significant variation of the electron density is found between nuclear and bar HII regions. However, the mean Halpha luminosity and electron density in the bar are higher than in typical disk HII regions. We investigate different mechanisms for explaining the excess of nitrogen emission observed in our starburst nuclei. There is no evidence for the presence of a weak hidden active galactic nucleus in our starburst galaxies. The cause of this excess is probably a selective enrichment of nitrogen in the nuclei of the galaxies, following a succession of short and intense bursts of star formation. Our sample of SBNGs, located at a mean redshift of 0.015, has moderate Halpha (10^41 erg/s) and far infrared (10^10 Lsun) luminosities. The types are distributed equally among early- and late-type giant spirals with a slight preference for Sbc/Sc types because of their barred morphology. The majority (62%) of SBNGs are isolated with no sign of gravitational interaction. In terms of distance, luminosity and level of interaction, SBNGs are intermediate between HII galaxies and luminous infrared galaxies. △ Less

Breaking the SBNGs into early-types (Sb and earlier) and late-types reveals that the former seem to follow the same linear luminosity-metallicity relation as the irregular and elliptical galaxies, whereas the latter and the giant spirals show comparable (0.2 and 0.3 dex) excess abundances with respect to the linear relation. This difference between the two types of SBNGs is consistent with the predictions of the model of hierarchical formation of galaxies: the early-type SBNGs are building their bulges by successive mergers of small stellar and gaseous systems, while the late-type SBNGs are mostly accreting gas to form a disk. △ Less

The HCN luminosities (relative to the CO and far infrared ones) in these galaxies with very young starbursts are consistent with those observed in galaxies with older starbursts and in normal galaxies, and so are our upper limits to the CS intensities (relative to CO). The starburst ages evaluated from our spectrophotometric observations are in the range 3.4 to 6.0 Myr. A circum-nuclear ring is apparent on our images of NGC 5430, the galaxy with the oldest central starburst; this galaxy also has the widest molecular lines. The central star formation rates derived from the Halpha luminosity are consistent with those expected from the global FIR luminosities, and are correlated with the HCN luminosities. Finally, an independent estimate of the H_2 column density is obtained by optical spectrophotometry; it leads to a H_2 column density to CO intensity ratio which is about 2 to 3 times lower than the standard value, because the CO intensities of the three galaxies are higher than average, relative to their far infrared fluxes. △ Less

The role of references in the astronomical discourse

Abstract: We have counted the number of references in 1179 papers published in Astronomy and Astrophysics over twenty years. The number of references has increased by 60% between 1975 and 1995, reflecting the increase (by the same amount) of the literature which must be cited, and of the number of pages per paper. There are 1.5 times more references in predominantly observational fields than in others. Re… ▽ More We have counted the number of references in 1179 papers published in Astronomy and Astrophysics over twenty years. The number of references has increased by 60% between 1975 and 1995, reflecting the increase (by the same amount) of the literature which must be cited, and of the number of pages per paper. There are 1.5 times more references in predominantly observational fields than in others. References are used 1.65 times in the text, and there is no trend with time or field. They appear mostly in the introduction (30%) and in the main body of the paper (60%), but papers in predominantly observational fields tend to use less references in the introduction and more in the main body than papers in the other fields. Most references (62%) serve to support a result, and tend to be of theoretical nature. Astronomers are a very conformist bunch, as there are no trends with nationality, and references to conflicting evidence are kept at about 8%. The analysis of a series of papers by de Vaucouleurs on the Hubble constant shows how a controversial subject affects the use of references. △ Less

A Correlation Between CO Linewidth and Starburst Age in Barred Spiral Galaxies

The morphological segregation of galaxies in clusters. III. The distant cluster Cl0939+4713 (Abell 851)

Morphological type estimates for the galaxies are given. A rigorous comparison of the properties of the types shows that early-type galaxies in Cl0939+4713 are, within the present statistical or systematic errors, indistinguishable from… ▽ More We have performed an isophotal analysis of galaxies in the distant (z=0.4) cluster Cl0939+4713 (Abell 851), using post-refurbished Hubble Space Telescope images. Morphological type estimates for the galaxies are given. A rigorous comparison of the properties of the types shows that early-type galaxies in Cl0939+4713 are, within the present statistical or systematic errors, indistinguishable from their counterparts in Coma in all their studied properties, namely ellipticity profile, slope of the color-magnitude relation from the near-ultraviolet to the near-infrared colors, mean surface brightness and luminosity function in the restframe photographic J band, homogeneity in color (around the color-magnitude relation). Furthermore ellipticals and lenticulars are separately homogeneous in their mean surface brightness, and have similar relative mean surface brightnesses in both clusters. Spirals are overabundant in Cl0939+4713 with respect to Coma, but twice less than previously estimated, and are more similar to field spirals than to cluster spirals. We suggest that the differences in the photometric properties of the spirals in the two clusters arise from differences in cluster gas density distribution which ultimately bring star formation in the spirals to a stop in Coma, but not in Cl0939+4713. The morphological types are segregated along a privileged direction that coincides with the position angle of the major axis of the outer X-ray isophotes in the cluster, just like in Coma and Perseus. △ Less

Structural classification of galaxies in clusters

The rate of agreement among traditional morphologists on the morphological type of galaxies is estimated from published classification works, and is estimated at about 20 %, when galaxies are classified into three bins (E, S0, S+Irr). The advantages of the quantitative method of structural classification for classifying galaxies in clusters are outlined. This method is based on the isophotal analysis of galaxy images, and on the examination of quantitative structural parameters derived from this analysis, such as the profiles of luminosity, ellipticity and deviations from ellipticity of the galaxy. The structural and traditional methods are compared on a complete sample of 190 galaxies in the Coma cluster. The morphological types derived by both methods agree to within 15 or 20 %, the same rate as among traditional morphologists alone, thus showing that our morphological classes do coincide with the traditional ones. The galaxies with discrepant types are mostly faint (mag_B > 16.0), or have features typical of spirals, but which have not been detected, noticed or taken into account by traditional morphologists. The rate of agreement is also good for galaxies in a distant cluster (z ~0.4). The structural method, gives highly reproducible results, never reached by traditional estimations of the morphological type. Thus, the morphological types obtained with this method should be preferred. The advantages of the method are further demonstrated by new results on the properties of galaxies in clusters. △ Less

Comparison of the dense molecular gas in the LINER galaxy NGC 6764 and in the Wolf-Rayet galaxy NGC 5430

Abstract: We compare the dense molecular gas content in two barred spiral galaxies, NGC 6764 (classified LINER) and NGC 5430 (a Wolf-Rayet galaxy). We find a significant difference in the proportion of dense molecular gas between the two galaxies. CS(3-2) is detected in NGC 6764 but not in NGC 5430, even though the intensities of CO(2-1) and HCN(1-0) are higher in the latter galaxy. Morphological classification and structural parameters for early-type galaxies in the Coma cluster

Abstract: We present the results of an isophotal shape analysis of three samples of galaxies in the Coma cluster. Quantitative morphology, together with structural and photometric parameters, is given for each galaxy. Special emphasis has been placed on the detailed classification of early-type galaxies. The three samples are: i) a sample of 97 early-type galaxies brighter than m$_B$ = 17.00 falling wit… ▽ More We present the results of an isophotal shape analysis of three samples of galaxies in the Coma cluster. Quantitative morphology, together with structural and photometric parameters, is given for each galaxy. Special emphasis has been placed on the detailed classification of early-type galaxies. The three samples are: i) a sample of 97 early-type galaxies brighter than m$_B$ = 17.00 falling within one degree from the center of the Coma cluster; these galaxies were observed with CCD cameras, mostly in good to excellent resolution conditions; ii) a magnitude complete sample of 107 galaxies of all morphological types down to m$_B$ = 17.00 falling in a circular region of 50 arcmin diameter, slightly offcentered to the North-West of the cluster center; the images for this and the next sample come from digitized photographic plates; iii) a complete comparison sample of 26 galaxies of all morphological types down to m$_R$ = 16.05 (or m$_B$ $\simeq$ 17.5), also in a region of 50 arcmin diameter, but centered 2.6 degrees West of the cluster center. The reliability of our morphological classifications and structural parameters of galaxies, down to the adopted magnitude limits, is assessed by comparing the results on those galaxies for which we had images taken with different instrumentation and/or seeing conditions, and by comparing our results with similar data from other observers. △ Less
