Abstract:
High-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements ($Δ$E = 46 meV) have been performed on Cd$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ through the metal-to-insulator transition (MIT). A magnetic excitation at 125 meV evolves continuously through the MIT, in agreement with recent Raman scattering results, and provides further confirmation for an all-in, all-out magnetic ground state. Asymmetry of this feature is likely a result of coupling between the electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom. We also observe a broad continuum of interband excitations centered at 0.3 eV energy loss. This is indicative of significant hybridization between Os 5$d$ and O 2$p$ states, and concurrent itinerant nature of the system. In turn, this suggests a possible break down of the free-ion model for Cd$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$.

Abstract:
We present AC and DC magnetometry, heat capacity, muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) studies of the pyrochlore osmate Y$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$. We observe a non-zero effective moment governed by $\sqrt{f}μ_{\rm{eff}} = 0.417(1)\,μ_{\rm{B}}$ where $f$ is the fraction of Os sites which exhibit a spin, and spin freezing at temperature $T_{\rm f} \simeq 5\,$K, consiste…

We present AC and DC magnetometry, heat capacity, muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) studies of the pyrochlore osmate Y$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$. We observe a non-zero effective moment governed by $\sqrt{f}μ_{\rm{eff}} = 0.417(1)\,μ_{\rm{B}}$ where $f$ is the fraction of Os sites which exhibit a spin, and spin freezing at temperature $T_{\rm f} \simeq 5\,$K, consistent with previous results. The field dependence of magnetisation data shows that the paramagnetic moment is most likely due to large moments $μ_{\rm eff} \simeq 3\,μ_{\rm B}$ on only a small fraction $f \simeq 0.02$ of Os sites. Comparison of single-ion energy level calculations with the RIXS data yields a non-magnetic $J_{\rm eff} = 0$ ground state on the Os$^{4+}$ sites. The spin-orbit interaction, Hund's coupling and trigonal distortion of OsO$_{6}$ octahedra are all important in modelling the experimentally observed spectra. We are able to rule out impurity effects, leaving disorder-related effects such as oxygen non-stoichiometry or site interchange between Os and Y ions as the most plausible explanation for the magnetic response in this material.

The behavior of this feature is consistent with the spin resonance mode found in other unconventional superconductors, and strongly resembles the spin resonance observed in the spectrum of the molecular-intercalated iron selenide, Li$_{0.6}$(ND$_{2}$)$_{0.2}$(ND$_{3}$)$_{0.8}$Fe$_{2}$Se$_{2}$. The signal can be described with a characteristic two-dimensional wave vector $(π, 0.67π)$ in the Brillouin zone of the iron square lattice, consistent with the nesting vector between electron Fermi sheets.

We report single crystal X-ray diffraction measurements on Na$_2$Ti$_{2}Pn_{2}$O ($Pn$ = As, Sb) which reveal a charge superstructure that appears below the density wave transitions previously observed in bulk data. From symmetry-constrained structure refinements we establish that the associated distortion mode can be described by two propagation vectors, ${\bf q}_{1} = (1/2, 0, l)$ and ${\bf q}_{2} = (0, 1/2, l)$, with $l=0$ (Sb) or $l = 1/2$ (As), and primarily involves in-plane displacements of the Ti atoms perpendicular to the Ti--O bonds. The results provide direct evidence for phonon-assisted charge density wave order in Na$_2$Ti$_{2}Pn_{2}$O and identify a proximate ordered phase that could compete with superconductivity in doped BaTi$_{2}$Sb$_{2}$O.

We report a high-resolution angle-resolved photo-emission spectroscopy study of the evolution of the electronic structure of FeSe1-xSx single crystals. Isovalent S substitution onto the Se site constitutes a chemical pressure which subtly modifies the electronic structure of FeSe at high temperatures and induces a suppression of the tetragonal-symmetry-breaking structural transition temperature from 87K to 58K for x=0.15. With increasing S substitution, we find smaller splitting between bands with dyz and dxz orbital character and weaker anisotropic distortions of the low temperature Fermi surfaces. These effects evolve systematically as a function of both S substitution and temperature, providing strong evidence that an orbital ordering is the underlying order parameter of the structural transition in FeSe1-xSx. Finally, we detect the small inner hole pocket for x=0.12, which is pushed below the Fermi level in the orbitally-ordered low temperature Fermi surface of FeSe.

We present a comprehensive study of the evolution of the nematic electronic structure of FeSe using high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), quantum oscillations in the normal state and elastoresistance measurements. Our high resolution ARPES allows us to track the Fermi surface deformation from four-fold to two-fold symmetry across the structural transition at ~87 K which is stabilized as a result of the dramatic splitting of bands associated with dxz and dyz character. The low temperature Fermi surface is that a compensated metal consisting of one hole and two electron bands and is fully determined by combining the knowledge from ARPES and quantum oscillations. A manifestation of the nematic state is the significant increase in the nematic susceptibility as approaching the structural transition that we detect from our elastoresistance measurements on FeSe. The dramatic changes in electronic structure cannot be explained by the small lattice effects and, in the absence of magnetic fluctuations above the structural transition, points clearly towards an electronically driven transition in FeSe stabilized by orbital-charge ordering.
