Dense vector representations for sentences made significant progress in recent years as can be seen on sentence similarity tasks. Real-world phrase retrieval applications, on the other hand, still encounter challenges for effective use of dense representations. We show that when target phrases reside inside noisy context, representing the full sentence with a single dense vector, is not sufficient for effective phrase retrieval. We therefore look into the notion of representing multiple, sub-sentence, consecutive word spans, each with its own dense vector. We show that this technique is much more effective for phrase mining, yet requires considerable compute to obtain useful span representations. Accordingly, we make an argument for contextualized word/token embeddings that can be aggregated for arbitrary word spans while maintaining the span's semantic meaning. We introduce a modification to the common contrastive loss used for sentence embeddings that encourages word embeddings to have this property. To demonstrate the effect of this method we present a dataset based on the STS-B dataset with additional generated text, that requires finding the best matching paraphrase residing in a larger context and report the degree of similarity to the origin phrase. We demonstrate on this dataset, how our proposed method can achieve better results without significant increase to compute.

Nowadays a vast literature is available on the Hele-Shaw or incompressible limit for nonlinear degenerate diffusion equations. This problem has attracted a lot of attention due to its applications to tissue growth and crowd motion modelling as it constitutes a way to link soft congestion (or compressible) models to hard congestion (or incompressible) descriptions. In this paper, we address the question of estimating the rate of this asymptotics in the presence of external drifts. In particular, we provide improved results in the 2-Wasserstein distance which are global in time thanks to the contractivity property that holds for strictly convex potentials.

We present regularity results for nonlinear drift-diffusion equations of porous medium type (together with their incompressible limit). We relax the assumptions imposed on the drift term with respect to previous results and additionally study the effect of linear diffusion on our regularity result (a scenario of particular interest in the incompressible case, for it represents the motion of particles driven by a Brownian motion subject to a density constraint). Specifically, this work concerns the $L^4$-summability of the pressure gradient in porous medium flows with drifts that is stable with respect to the exponent of the nonlinearity, and $L^2$-estimates on the pressure Hessian (in particular, in the incompressible case with linear diffusion we prove that the pressure is the positive part of an $H^2$-function).

We obtain new estimates for the solution of both the porous medium and the fast diffusion equations by studying the evolution of suitable Lipschitz norms. Our results include instantaneous regularization for all positive times, long-time decay rates of the norms which are sharp and independent of the initial support, and new convergence results to the Barenblatt profile. Moreover, we address nonlinear diffusion equations including quadratic or bounded potentials as well. In the slow diffusion case, our strategy requires exponents close enough to 1, while in the fast diffusion case, our results cover any exponent for which the problem is well-posed and mass-preserving in the whole space.

Tabular data sharing serves as a common method for data exchange. However, sharing sensitive information without adequate privacy protection can compromise individual privacy. Thus, ensuring privacy-preserving data sharing is crucial. Differential privacy (DP) is regarded as the gold standard in data privacy. Despite this, current DP methods tend to generate privacy-preserving tabular datasets that often suffer from limited practical utility due to heavy perturbation and disregard for the tables' utility dynamics. Besides, there has not been much research on selective attribute release, particularly in the context of controlled partially perturbed data sharing. This has significant implications for scenarios such as cross-agency data sharing in real-world situations. We introduce OptimShare: a utility-focused, multi-criteria solution designed to perturb input datasets selectively optimized for specific real-world applications. OptimShare combines the principles of differential privacy, fuzzy logic, and probability theory to establish an integrated tool for privacy-preserving data sharing. Empirical assessments confirm that OptimShare successfully strikes a balance between better data utility and robust privacy, effectively serving various real-world problem scenarios.

Linear recursions with integer coefficients, such as the one generating the Fibonacci sequence, have been intensely studied over millennia and yet still hide new mathematics. Such a recursion was used by Apéry in his proof of the irrationality of $ζ(3)$, later named the Apéry constant. Apéry's proof used a specific linear recursion containing integer polynomials forming a continued fraction; called polynomial continued fractions (PCFs). Similar polynomial recursions prove the irrationality of other mathematical constants such as $π$ and $e$. More generally, the sequences generated by PCFs form Diophantine approximations (DAs), which are ubiquitous in areas of math such as number theory. It is not known which polynomial recursions create useful DAs and whether they prove irrationality. Here, we present general conclusions and conjectures about DAs created from PCFs. Specifically, we generalize Apéry's work, going beyond his particular choice of PCF, finding the conditions under which a PCF proves irrationality or provides an efficient DA. To provide concrete examples, we apply our findings to PCFs found by the Ramanujan Machine algorithms to represent fundamental constants such as $π$, $e$, $ζ(3)$, and the Catalan constant G. For each such PCF, we demonstrate the extraction of its convergence rate and efficiency, as well as the bound it provides for the irrationality measure of the fundamental constant. We further propose new DA conjectures based on PCFs. Our findings motivate future research on sequences created by any linear recursions with integer coefficients, to aid the development of systematic algorithms for finding DAs of fundamental constants. Consequently, our study may contribute to ongoing efforts to answer open questions, such as the proof of the irrationality of the Catalan constant or of values of the Riemann zeta function (e.g., $ζ(5)$).

In this paper, we study the stability properties of a finite difference scheme for a model where the density evolves down pressure gradients and the growth rate depends on the pressure and possibly nutrients. Based on the stability results, we prove the scheme to be asymptotic preserving (AP) in the incompressible limit. Numerical simulations are performed in order to investigate the regularity of the pressure. We study the sharpness of the $L^4$-uniform bound of the gradient, the limiting case being a solution whose support contains a bubble which closes-up in finite time generating a singularity, the so-called focusing solution.

Motivated by biological applications on tumour invasion through thin membranes, we study a porous-medium type equation where the density of the cell population evolves under Darcy's law, assuming continuity of both the density and flux velocity on the thin membrane which separates two domains. The drastically different scales and mobility rates between the membrane and the adjacent tissues lead to consider the limit as the thickness of the membrane approaches zero. We are interested in recovering the effective interface problem and the transmission conditions on the limiting zero-thickness surface, formally derived by Chaplain et al. (2019), which are compatible with nonlinear generalized Kedem-Katchalsky ones. Our analysis relies on a priori estimates and compactness arguments as well as on the construction of a suitable extension operator which allows to deal with the degeneracy of the mobility rate in the membrane, as its thickness tends to zero.

Analysis of the meteorological data shows that fog events in the experimental area predominantly occur under two sets of synoptic conditions - Red Sea Trough (44%) and Ridge (41%), while the incidence of fog events peaks between March and June. In particular, the results obtained indicate a decreasing trend in the number of fog events and their duration over time where the frequency of radiation fog has decreased over time when compared to the incidence of advection fog. This note provides a long-term analysis of data in a region that lacks reliable time series of this length, and highlight important insights for future research.

The experimental evaluation of the methods and concepts covered in software engineering has been increasingly valued. This value indicates the constant search for new forms of assessment and validation of the results obtained in Software Engineering research. Results are validated in studies through evaluations, which in turn become increasingly stringent. As an alternative to aid in the verification of the results, that is, whether they are positive or negative, we suggest the use of statistical methods. This article presents some of the main statistical techniques available, as well as their use in carrying out the implementation of data analysis in experimental studies in Software Engineering. This paper presents a practical approach proving statistical techniques through a decision tree, which was created in order to facilitate the understanding of the appropriate statistical method for each data analysis situation. Actual data from the software projects were employed to demonstrate the use of these statistical methods. Although it is not the aim of this work, basic experimentation and statistics concepts will be presented, as well as a concrete indication of the applicability of these techniques.

We created a training dataset on a few areas of interest aggregating databases, semi-automatic classification, and manual annotation to get a complete ground truth in each class. A comparative study of different encoder-decoder architectures (U-Net, U-Net with Resnet encoders, Deeplab v3+) is presented with different loss functions. The final product is a highly valuable land cover map computed from model predictions stitched together, binarized, and refined before vectorization.

Both compressible and incompressible porous medium models are used in the literature to describe the mechanical properties of living tissues. These two classes of models can be related using a stiff pressure law. In the incompressible limit, the compressible model generates a free boundary problem of Hele-Shaw type where incompressibility holds in the saturated phase. Here we consider the case with a nutrient. Then, a badly coupled system of equations describes the cell density number and the nutrient concentration. For that reason, the derivation of the free boundary (incompressible) limit was an open problem, in particular a difficulty is to establish the so-called complementarity relation which allows to recover the pressure using an elliptic equation. To establish the limit, we use two new ideas. The first idea, also used recently for related problems, is to extend the usual Aronson-Bénilan estimates in $L^\infty$ to an $L^2$ setting. The second idea is to derive a sharp uniform $L^4$ estimate on the pressure gradient, independently of space dimension.

Surface level hydrometeors, and specifically fog, cause attenuation of the signal level measured by microwave communication networks. These networks operate at frequencies of tens of GHz and form the data transport infrastructure between cellular base stations. Thus, wireless communication links are, effectively, an existing fog monitoring facility. Operational costs are minimal, since the network is already deployed in the field, and measurements are already stored by many of the cellular providers for quality assurance purposes. This study shows the potential of microwave communication networks for the detection of fog in challenging conditions where satellite systems are often limited. In a first event, the ability to detect fog using commercial microwave links, at a time when the satellite cannot detect the phenomena due to high level cloud cover obscuring the ground level fog, is demonstrated. The ability of the microwave system to rule out ground level fog at times when the satellite detects a low-lying stratus cloud, but cannot identify whether it is adjacent to the ground or at higher elevations above it, is demonstrated in a second event. The results indicate the operative potential of this technique to assist end users in reliable decision making that have highly important economic and safety implications.

The atmospheric greenhouse effect and the hydrological cycle of Earth are key components enabling the planet to support life. Water vapor is a central element in both of these, accounting for approximately half of the present day greenhouse effect, and comprising the most important gaseous source of atmospheric infrared opacity. Specifically, it functions as the fuel for the development of convective storm clouds. This parameter, however, is considered one of the least studied due to the limitations of conventional monitoring instruments. The current predominate monitoring tools are humidity gauges and satellites which suffer from a lack of spatial representativeness and difficulties in measuring at ground level altitudes, respectively. This study demonstrates for the first time the potential to reconstruct the 2-Dimensional humidity field using commercial microwave links which form the infrastructure for data transmission in cellular networks. Water vapor attenuates the waves transmitted by the system and thus these microwave links can potentially form as a virtual network for monitoring the humidity field. The results show a correlation of between 0.6 and 0.92 with root mean square differences ranging from 1.9 to 4.15 gr/m^3 between conventional humidity gauges and the humidity estimates calculated for the same points in space by the proposed technology. The results obtained are the first to point out the improved performance of humidity measurements when using data from multiple microwave links. These results indicate the tremendous potential of this novel approach for improving the initialization of meteorological forecasting models thus potentially improving the ability to cope with the dangers associated with extreme weather.

We report on a measurement of the flavor-specific $B^{0}_{s}$ lifetime and of the $D^{-}_{s}$ lifetime using proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment and corresponding to 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. Approximately 407 000 $B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow D^{(*)-}_{s} μ^{+}ν_μ$ decays are partially reconstructed in the $K^{+}K^{-}π^{-}μ^{+}$ final state. The $B^{0}_{s}$ and $D^{-}_{s}$ natural widths are determined using, as a reference, kinematically similar $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{(*)-}μ^{+}ν_μ$ decays reconstructed in the same final state. The resulting differences between widths of $B^{0}_{s}$ and $B^{0}$ mesons and of $D^{-}_{s}$ and $D^{-}$ mesons are $Δ_Γ(B) =-0.0115 \pm 0.0053 (stat) \pm 0.0041 (syst)$ ps$^{-1}$ and $Δ_Γ(D) = 1.0131 \pm 0.0117 (stat) \pm 0.0065 (syst)$ ps$^{-1}$, respectively. Combined with the known $B^{0}$ and $D^{-}$ lifetimes, these yield the flavor-specific $B^{0}_{s}$ lifetime, $τ^{\rm fs}_{B^{0}_{s}} = 1.547 \pm 0.013 (stat) \pm 0.010 (syst) \pm 0.004 (τ_{B})$ ps and the $D^{-}_{s}$ lifetime, $τ_{D^{-}_{s}} = 0.5064 \pm 0.0030 (stat) \pm 0.0017 (syst) \pm 0.0017 (τ_{D})$ ps The last uncertainties originate from the limited knowledge of the $B^0$ and $D^{-}$ lifetimes. The results improve upon current determinations.

A search for the rare decays $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ is performed at the LHCb experiment using data collected in $pp$ collisions corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb$^{-1}$. An excess of $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ decays is observed with a significance of 7.8 standard deviations, representing the first observation of this decay in a single experiment. The branching fraction is measured to be ${\cal B}(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=\left(3.0\pm 0.6^{+0.3}_{-0.2}\right)\times 10^{-9}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The first measurement of the $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ effective lifetime, $τ(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=2.04\pm 0.44\pm 0.05$ ps, is reported. No significant excess of $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ decays is found and a 95 % confidence level upper limit, ${\cal B}(B^0\toμ^+μ^-)<3.4\times 10^{-10}$, is determined. All results are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations.

Assuming no contribution from $B^0\toτ^+τ^-$ decays, an upper limit is set on the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0\toτ^+τ^-) < 6.8\times 10^{-3}$ at 95% confidence level. If instead no contribution from $B_s^0\toτ^+τ^-$ decays is assumed, the limit is $\mathcal{B}(B^0\toτ^+τ^-)< 2.1 \times 10^{-3}$ at 95% confidence level. A search for $C\!P$ violation in the decay $Λ^0_b \to p K^- μ^+ μ^-$ is presented. This decay is mediated by flavour-changing neutral-current transitions in the Standard Model and is potentially sensitive to new sources of $C\!P$ violation. The study is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions recorded with the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3$ $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. The $Λ^0_b \to p K^- μ^+ μ^-$ decay is observed for the first time, and two observables that are sensitive to different manifestations of $C\!P$ violation are measured, $Δ\mathcal{A}_{C\!P} \equiv \mathcal{A}_{C\!P}(Λ^0_b \to p K^- μ^+ μ^-)-\mathcal{A}_{C\!P}(Λ^0_b\to pK^- J/ψ)$ and $a_{C\!P}^{\widehat{T}-odd}$, where the latter is based on asymmetries in the angle between the $μ^+μ^-$ and $p K^-$ decay planes. These are measured to be $Δ\mathcal{A}_{C\!P} = (-3.5 \pm 5.0(stat) \pm 0.2(syst))\times 10^{-2}$, $a_{C\!P}^{\widehat{T}-odd} = (1.2 \pm 5.0(stat) \pm 0.7(syst))\times 10^{-2}$, and no evidence for $C\!P$ violation is found.

A near-threshold enhancement in the $D^0 p$ amplitude is investigated and found to be consistent with a new resonance, denoted the $Λ_c(2860)^+$, of spin $3/2$ and positive parity.

Abstract:
The production of $J/ψ$ mesons in jets is studied in the forward region of proton-proton collisions using data collected with the LHCb detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The fraction of the jet transverse momentum carried by the $J/ψ$ meson, $z \equiv p_{\rm T}(J/ψ)/p_{\rm T}({\rm jet})$, is measured using jets with $p_{\rm T}({\rm jet}) > 20$ GeV in the pseudorapidity range…

The fraction of the jet transverse momentum carried by the $J/ψ$ meson, $z \equiv p_{\rm T}(J/ψ)/p_{\rm T}({\rm jet})$, is measured using jets with $p_{\rm T}({\rm jet}) > 20$ GeV in the pseudorapidity range $2.5 < η({\rm jet}) < 4.0$. The observed $z$ distribution for $J/ψ$ mesons produced in $b$-hadron decays is consistent with expectations. However, the results for prompt $J/ψ$ production do not agree with predictions based on fixed-order non-relativistic QCD. This is the first measurement of the $p_{\rm T}$ fraction carried by prompt $J/ψ$ mesons in jets at any experiment.

The results represent the most precise measurements of these asymmetries to date.

By normalising to $B^{+} \rightarrow \bar{D}^{0} π^{+}$ decays, a measurement of the branching fraction multiplied by the production rates for $B_{c}^{+}$ relative to $B^{+}$ mesons in the LHCb acceptance is obtained, $$ R_{D^{0} K} = \frac{f_{c}}{f_{u}}\times\mathcal{B}(B_{c}^{+} \rightarrow D^{0} K^{+}) = (9.3\,^{+2.8}_{-2.5} \pm 0.6) \times 10^{-7}\,, $$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This decay is expected to proceed predominantly through weak annihilation and penguin amplitudes, and is the first $B_{c}^{+}$ decay of this nature to be observed.

In this manuscript, we demonstrate the ability of nonlinear light-atom interactions to produce tunably non-Gaussian, partially self-healing optical modes. Gaussian spatial-mode light tuned near to the atomic resonances in hot rubidium vapor is shown to result in non-Gaussian output mode structures that may be controlled by varying either the input beam power or the temperature of the atomic vapor. We show that the output modes exhibit a degree of self-reconstruction after encountering an obstruction in the beam path. The resultant modes are similar to truncated Bessel-Gauss modes that exhibit the ability to self-reconstruct earlier upon propagation than Gaussian modes. The ability to generate tunable, self-reconstructing beams has potential applications to a variety of imaging and communication scenarios.

This new scalar particle, predicted by Hidden Sector models, is assumed to have a narrow width. The signal would manifest itself as an excess in the dimuon invariant mass distribution over the Standard Model background. No significant excess is observed in the accessible ranges of mass ${250 < m(χ) < 4700\,\rm MeV/c^2}$ and lifetime ${0.1 < τ(χ) < 1000\,\rm ps}$. Upper limits on the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to K^+ χ(μ^+μ^-))$ at 95% confidence level are set as a function of $m(χ)$ and $τ(χ)$, varying between $2\times10^{-10}$ and $10^{-7}$. These are the most stringent limits to date. The limits are interpreted in the context of a model with a light inflaton particle.

A measurement of the phase difference between the short- and long-distance contributions to the $B^{+}\to K^{+}μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decay is performed by analysing the dimuon mass distribution. The analysis is based on $pp$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 $\rm fb^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment in 2011 and 2012. The long-distance contribution to the $B^{+}\to K^{+}μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decay is modelled as a sum of relativistic Breit--Wigner amplitudes representing different vector meson resonances decaying to muon pairs, each with their own magnitude and phase. The measured phases of the $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ resonances are such that the interference with the short-distance component in dimuon mass regions far from their pole masses is small. In addition, constraints are placed on the Wilson coefficients, $\mathcal{C}_{9}$ and $\mathcal{C}_{10}$, and the branching fraction of the short-distance component is measured.

This is the first application of the energy test in four-body decays. The search is performed for $P$-even $CP$ asymmetries and, for the first time, is extended to probe the $P$-odd case. Using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}=$7 TeV and 8 TeV, the world's best sensitivity to $CP$ violation in this decay is obtained. The data are found to be consistent with the hypothesis of $CP$ symmetry with a $p$-value of $(4.6\pm0.5)\%$ in the $P$-even case, and marginally consistent with a $p$-value of $(0.6\pm0.2)\%$ in the $P$-odd case, corresponding to a significance for $CP$ non-conservation of 2.7 standard deviations.

A search is presented for massive long-lived particles decaying into a muon and two quarks. The dataset consists of proton-proton interactions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1 and 2 1/fb, respectively. The analysis is performed assuming a set of production mechanisms with simple topologies, including the production of a Higgs-like particle decaying into two long-lived particles. The mass range from 20 to 80 GeV and lifetimes from 5 to 100 ps are explored. Results are also interpreted in terms of neutralino production in different supersymmetric models, with masses in the 23-198 GeV range. No excess above the background expectation is observed and upper limits are set on the production cross-section for various points in the parameter space of theoretical models.

An excess of $B^+ \to p \barΛ$ candidates with respect to background expectations is seen with a statistical significance of 4.1 standard deviations, and constitutes the first evidence for this decay. The branching fraction, measured using the $B^+ \to K^0_{\mathrm S} π^+$ decay for normalisation, is \begin{eqnarray} \mathcal{B}(B^+ \to p \barΛ) & = & ( 2.4 \,^{+1.0}_{-0.8} \pm 0.3 ) \times 10^{-7} \,, \nonumber \end{eqnarray} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Abstract:
Measurements of charm mixing and $C\!P$ violation parameters from the decay-time-dependent ratio of $ D^0 \to K^+ π^- $ to $ D^0 \to K^- π^+ $ decay rates and the charge-conjugate ratio are reported. The analysis uses $\overline{B}\to D^{*+} μ^- X$, and charge-conjugate decays, where $D^{*+}\to D^0 π^+$, and $D^0\to K^{\mp} π^{\pm}$. The $pp$ collision data are recorded by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$. The data are analyzed under three hypotheses: (i) mixing assuming $C\!P$ symmetry, (ii) mixing assuming no direct $C\!P$ violation in the Cabibbo-favored or doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decay amplitudes, and (iii) mixing allowing either direct $C\!P$ violation and/or $C\!P$ violation in the superpositions of flavor eigenstates defining the mass eigenstates. The data are also combined with those from a previous LHCb study of $D^0\to K π$ decays from a disjoint set of $ D^{*+} $ candidates produced directly in $pp$ collisions. In all cases, the data are consistent with the hypothesis of $C\!P$ symmetry.

Abstract:
A combination of measurements sensitive to the CKM angle $γ$ from LHCb is performed. The inputs are from analyses of time-integrated $B^{+}\rightarrow DK^+$, $B^{0} \rightarrow D K^{*0}$, $B^{0} \rightarrow D K^+ π^-$ and $B^{+} \rightarrow D K^+π^+π^-$ tree-level decays. In addition, results from a time-dependent analysis of $B_{s}^{0} \rightarrow D_{s}^{\mp}K^{\pm}$ decays are included. The comb…

The combination yields $γ= (72.2^{+6.8}_{-7.3})^\circ$, where the uncertainty includes systematic effects. The 95.5% confidence level interval is determined to be $γ\in [55.9,85.2]^\circ$. A second combination is investigated, also including measurements from $B^{+} \rightarrow D π^+$ and $B^{+} \rightarrow D π^+π^-π^+$ decays, which yields compatible results.
