The growing amount of data and advances in data science have created a need for a new kind of cloud platform that provides users with flexibility, strong security, and the ability to couple with supercomputers and edge devices through high-performance networks. We have built such a nation-wide cloud platform, called "mdx" to meet this need. The mdx platform's virtualization service, jointly operated by 9 national universities and 2 national research institutes in Japan, launched in 2021, and more features are in development. Currently mdx is used by researchers in a wide variety of domains, including materials informatics, geo-spatial information science, life science, astronomical science, economics, social science, and computer science. This paper provides an the overview of the mdx platform, details the motivation for its development, reports its current status, and outlines its future plans.

We have carried out exclusive measurements for the photoproduction of an $η$ meson from a proton target with an egg-shaped calorimeter made of BGO crystals (BGOegg) and forward charged-particle detectors at the SPring-8 LEPS2 beamline. The differential cross sections and photon beam asymmetries of the $γp \to ηp$ reaction are measured in a center-of-mass energy ($W$) range of $1.82$-$2.32$ GeV and a polar angle range of $-1.0 < \cos{θ^η_{\mathrm{c.m.}}} < 0.6$. The reaction is identified by selecting a proton and two $γ$'s produced by an $η$-meson decay. The kinematic fit method was employed to select the reaction candidate with the confidence level larger than $1$\%. A bump structure at $W$ = $2.0$-$2.3$ GeV in the differential cross section is confirmed at extremely backward $η$ polar angles, where the existing data are inconsistent with each other. This bump structure is likely associated with high-spin resonances that couple with $s\bar{s}$ quarks. The results of the photon beam asymmetries in a wide $η$ polar angle range are new for the photon beam energies exceeding $2.1$ GeV. These results are not reproduced by the existing partial wave analyses. They provide an additional constraint to nucleon resonance studies at high energies.

We have constructed a new laser-Compton-scattering facility, called the LEPS2 beamline, at the 8-GeV electron storage ring, SPring-8. This facility provides a linearly polarized photon beam in a tagged energy range of 1.3--2.4 GeV. Thanks to a small divergence of the low-emittance storage-ring electrons, the tagged photon beam has a size (sigma) suppressed to about 4 mm even after it travels about 130 m to the experimental building that is independent of the storage ring building and contains large detector systems. This beamline is designed to achieve a photon beam intensity higher than that of the first laser-Compton-scattering beamline at SPring-8 by adopting the simultaneous injection of up to four high-power laser beams and increasing a transmittance for the long photon-beam path up to about 77%. The new beamline is under operation for hadron photoproduction experiments.

We measured missing mass spectrum of the $^{12}{\rm C}(γ,p)$ reaction for the first time in coincidence with potential decay products from $η'$ bound nuclei. We tagged an ($η+p$) pair associated with the $η'N\toηN$ process in a nucleus. After applying kinematical selections to reduce backgrounds, no signal events were observed in the bound-state region. An upper limit of the signal cross section in the opening angle $\cosθ^{ηp}_{lab}<-0.9$ was obtained to be 2.2 nb/sr at the 90$\%$ confidence level. It is compared with theoretical cross sections, whose normalization ambiguity is suppressed by measuring a quasifree $η'$ production rate. Our results indicate a small branching fraction of the $η'N\toηN$ process and/or a shallow $η'$-nucleus potential.

Differential cross sections and photon-beam asymmetries for the gamma p -> pi- Delta++(1232) reaction have been measured for 0.7<cos(theta)<1 and Egamma=1.5-2.95 GeV at SPring-8/LEPS. The first-ever high statistics cross section data are obtained in this kinematical region, and the asymmetry data for 1.5<Egamma(GeV)<2.8 are obtained for the first time. This reaction has a unique feature for studying the production mechanisms of a pure $u\bar{u}$ quark pair in the final state from the proton. Although there is no distinct peak structure in the cross sections, a non-negligible excess over the theoretical predictions is observed at Egamma=1.5-1.8 GeV. The asymmetries are found to be negative in most of the present kinematical regions, suggesting the dominance of pi-exchange in the t-channel. The negative asymmetries at forward meson production angles are different from the asymmetries previously measured for the photoproduction reactions which produce a $d\bar{d}$ or an $s\bar{s}$ quark pair in the final state. Advanced theoretical models introducing nucleon resonances and additional unnatural parity exchanges are needed to reproduce the present data.

We report the measurement of the $γp \rightarrow K^{+}Λ$ and $γp \rightarrow K^{+}Σ^{0}$ reactions at SPring-8. The differential cross sections and photon-beam asymmetries are measured at forward $K^{+}$ production angles using linearly polarized tagged-photon beams in the range of $E_γ=1.5$--3.0 GeV. With increasing photon energy, the cross sections for both $γp \rightarrow K^{+}Λ$ and $γp \rightarrow K^{+}Σ^{0}$ reactions decrease slowly. Distinct narrow structures in the production cross section have not been found at $E_γ=1.5$--3.0 GeV. The forward peaking in the angular distributions of cross sections, a characteristic feature of $t$-channel exchange, is observed for the production of $Λ$ in the whole observed energy range. A lack of similar feature for $Σ^{0}$ production reflects a less dominant role of $t$-channel contribution in this channel. The photon-beam asymmetries remain positive for both reactions, suggesting the dominance of $K^{*}$ exchange in the $t$ channel. These asymmetries increase gradually with the photon energy, and have a maximum value of +0.6 for both reactions. Comparison with theoretical predictions based on the Regge trajectory in the $t$ channel and the contributions of nucleon resonances indicates the major role of $t$-channel contributions as well as non-negligible effects of nucleon resonances in accounting for the reaction mechanism of hyperon photoproduction in this photon energy regime.

The differential cross sections and decay angular distributions for coherent $φ$-meson photoproduction from helium-4 have been measured for the first time at forward angles with linearly polarized photons in the energy range $E_γ = \text{1.685-2.385 GeV}$. Thanks to the target with spin-parity $J^{P} = 0^{+}$, unnatural-parity exchanges are prohibited, and thus natural-parity exchanges can be investigated clearly. The decay asymmetry with respect to photon polarization is shown to be very close to the maximal value. This ensures the dominance ($> 94\%$) of natural-parity exchanges in this reaction. To evaluate the contribution from natural-parity exchanges to the forward cross section ($θ= 0^\circ$) for the $γp \rightarrow φp$ reaction near the threshold, the energy dependence of the forward cross section ($θ= 0^\circ$) for the $γ{^{4}\text{He}} \rightarrow φ{^{4}\text{He}}$ reaction was analyzed. The comparison to $γp \rightarrow φp$ data suggests that enhancement of the forward cross section arising from natural-parity exchanges, and/or destructive interference between natural-parity and unnatural-parity exchanges is needed in the $γp \rightarrow φp$ reaction near the threshold.

Differential cross sections at $t=t_{\text{min}}$ and decay asymmetries for the $γp\rightarrowφp$ reaction have been measured using linearly polarized photons in the range 1.5 to 2.9 GeV. These cross sections were used to determine the Pomeron strength factor. The cross sections and decay asymmetries are consistently described by the $t$-channel Pomeron and pseudoscalar exchange model in the $E_γ$ region above 2.37 GeV. In the lower energy region, an excess over the model prediction is observed in the energy dependence of the differential cross sections at $t=t_{\text{min}}$. This observation suggests that additional processes or interference effects between Pomeron exchange and other processes appear near the threshold region.

Differential cross sections and photon beam asymmetries for the gamma p -> pi+ n reaction have been measured for 0.6<cos(theta)<1 and Egamma=1.5-2.95 GeV at SPring-8/LEPS. The cross sections monotonically decrease as the photon beam energy increases for 0.6<cos(theta)<0.9. However, the energy dependence of the cross sections for 0.9<cos(theta)<1 and Egamma=1.5-2.2 GeV (W=1.9-2.2 GeV) is different, which may be due to a nucleon or Delta resonance. The present cross sections agree well with the previous cross sections measured by other groups and show forward peaking, suggesting significant t-channel contributions in this kinematical region. The asymmetries are found to be positive, which can be explained by rho-exchange in the t-channel. Large positive asymmetries in the small |t| region, where the rho-exchange contribution becomes small, could be explained by introducing pi-exchange interference with the s-channel.

We analyse the performance of a gas time projection chamber (TPC) as a high-performance gamma-ray telescope and polarimeter in the e$^+$e$^-$ pair creation regime. We use data collected at a gamma-ray beam of known polarisation. The TPC provides two orthogonal projections $(x,z)$ and $(y,z)$ of the tracks induced by each conversion in the gas volume. We use a simple vertex finder in which vertices and pseudo-tracks exiting from them are identified.
We study the various contributions to the single-photon angular resolution using Monte Carlo simulations and compare them with the experimental data and find that they are in excellent agreement. The distribution of the azimutal angle of pair conversions shows a bias due to the non-cylindrical-symmetric structure of the detector. This bias would average out for a long duration exposure on a space mission, but for this pencil-beam characterisation we have ensured its accurate simulation by a double systematics control scheme, data taking with the detector rotated at several angles with respect to the beam polarisation direction and systematics control with a non-polarised beam.
We measure, for the first time, the polarisation asymmetry of a linearly polarised gamma-ray beam in the low energy pair creation regime. This sub-GeV energy range is critical for cosmic sources as their spectra are power laws which fall quickly as a function of increasing energy.
This work could pave the way to extending polarised gamma-ray astronomy beyond the MeV energy regime.

The polarisation information, which is carried by the azimuthal angle of the conversion plane, is lost for the same reasons.
HARPO (Hermetic ARgon POlarimeter) is an R\&D program to characterise the operation of a gaseous detector (a Time Projection Chamber or TPC) as a high angular-resolution and sensitivity telescope and polarimeter for $γ$ rays from cosmic sources. It represents a first step towards a future space instrument in the MeV-GeV range.
We built and characterised a 30cm cubic demonstrator [SPIE 91441M], and put it in a polarised $γ$-ray beam at the NewSUBARU accelerator in Japan. Data were taken at photon energies from 1.74MeV to 74MeV, and with different polarisation configurations.
We describe the experimental setup in beam. We then describe the software we developed to reconstruct the photon conversion events, with special focus on low energies. We also describe the thorough simulation of the detector used to compare results. Finally we will present the performance of the detector as extracted from this analysis and preliminary measurements of the polarisation asymmetry.
This beam-test qualification of a gas TPC prototype in a $γ$-ray beam could open the way to high-performance $γ$-ray astronomy and polarimetry in the MeV-GeV energy range in the near future.

They suffer of limited angular resolution at low energies, and their sensitivity drops below 1 GeV. The low multiple scattering in a gaseous detector gives access to higher angular resolution in the MeV-GeV range, and to the linear polarisation of the photons through the azimuthal angle of the electron-positron pair.
HARPO is an R&D program to characterise the operation of a TPC (Time Projection Chamber) as a high angular-resolution and sensitivity telescope and polarimeter for γ rays from cosmic sources. It represents a first step towards a future space instrument. A 30 cm cubic TPC demonstrator was built, and filled with 2 bar argon-based gas. It was put in a polarised γ-ray beam at the NewSUBARU accelerator in Japan in November 2014. Data were taken at different photon energies from 1.7 MeV to 74 MeV, and with different polarisation configurations. The electronics setup is described, with an emphasis on the trigger system. The event reconstruction algorithm is quickly described, and preliminary measurements of the polarisation of 11 MeVphotons are shown.

Furthermore, the observed interference effect does not account for the $\sqrt{s}=2.1$ GeV bump structure in forward differential cross sections for $φ$ photoproduction. This fact suggests possible exotic structures such as a hidden-strangeness pentaquark state, a new Pomeron exchange and rescattering processes via other hyperon states.

The Pacific Rim Application and Grid Middleware Assembly (PRAGMA) is an international community of researchers that actively collaborate to address problems and challenges of common interest in eScience. The PRAGMA Experimental Network Testbed (PRAGMA-ENT) was established with the goal of constructing an international software-defined network (SDN) testbed to offer the necessary networking support to the PRAGMA cyberinfrastructure. PRAGMA-ENT is isolated, and PRAGMA researchers have complete freedom to access network resources to develop, experiment, and evaluate new ideas without the concerns of interfering with production networks.
In the first phase, PRAGMA-ENT focused on establishing an international L2 backbone. With support from the Florida Lambda Rail (FLR), Internet2, PacificWave, JGN-X, and TWAREN, PRAGMA-ENT backbone connects Open\-Flow-enabled switches at University of Florida (UF), University of California San Diego (UCSD), Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST, Japan), Osaka University (Japan), National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST, Japan), and National Center for High-Performance Computing (Taiwan).
The second phase of PRAGMA-ENT consisted of evaluation of technologies for the control plane that enables multiple experiments (i.e., OpenFlow controllers) to co-exist. Preliminary experiments with FlowVisor revealed some limitations leading to the development of a new approach, called AutoVFlow. This paper will share our experience in the establishment of PRAGMA-ENT backbone (with international L2 links), its current status, and control plane plans. Discussion on preliminary application ideas, including optimization of routing control; multipath routing control; and remote visualization will also be discussed.

A laser-Compton backscattering beam, which we call a `Laser-Electron Photon' beam, was upgraded at the LEPS beamline of SPring-8. We accomplished the gains in backscattered photon beam intensities by factors of 1.5--1.8 with the injection of two adjacent laser beams or a higher power laser beam into the storage ring. The maximum energy of the photon beam was also extended from 2.4 GeV to 2.9 GeV with deep-ultraviolet lasers. The upgraded beams have been utilized for hadron photoproduction experiments at the LEPS beamline. Based on the developed methods, we plan the simultaneous injection of four high power laser beams at the LEPS2 beamline, which has been newly constructed at SPring-8. As a simulation result, we expect an order of magnitude higher intensities close to 10$^7$ sec$^{-1}$ and 10$^6$ sec$^{-1}$ for tagged photons up to 2.4 GeV and 2.9 GeV, respectively.

Differential cross sections for $ω$ mesons are larger than the predicted $u$-channel contribution in the energy range $2.0\leq\sqrt{s}\leq2.4$ GeV. The differential cross sections for $ω$ and $η'$ mesons become closer to the predicted $u$-channel contribution at $\sqrt{s}>2.4$ GeV. A bump structure in the $\sqrt{s}$ dependence of the differential cross sections for $η'$ mesons was observed at $\sqrt{s}\sim$2.35 GeV.

The nuclear transparency ratio for the deuteron shows a large suppression, and is consistent with the A-dependence of the ratio observed in a previous measurement with nuclear targets. The reduction for the deuteron cannot be adequately explained in term of isospin asymmetry. The present results suggest the need of refining our understanding of the $φ$-N interaction within a nucleus.

The statistical significance of the peak calculated from a shape analysis is 5.1 σ, and the differential cross-section for the γn \to K^- Θ^+ reaction is estimated to be 12 +- 2 nb/sr in the photon energy range from 2.0 GeV to 2.4 GeV in the LEPS angular range by assuming the isotropic production of the Θ^+ in the γn center-of-mass system. The obtained results support the existence of the Θ^+.

Differential cross sections for $γp \to K^+Λ(1405)$ and $γp \to K^+Σ^0(1385)$ reactions have been measured in the photon energy range from 1.5 to 2.4 GeV and the angular range of $0.8<\cos(Θ)<1.0$ for the $K^+$ scattering angle in the center-of-mass system. This data is the first measurement of the $Λ(1405)$ photoproduction cross section. The lineshapes of \LamS measured in $Σ^+π^-$ and $Σ^-π^+$ decay modes were different with each other, indicating a strong interference of the isospin 0 and 1 terms of the $Σπ$ scattering amplitudes. The ratios of \LamS production to \SigS production were measured in two photon energy ranges: near the production threshold ($1.5<E_γ<2.0$ GeV) and far from it ($2.0 <E_γ<2.4$ GeV). Differential cross sections and decay asymmetries for coherent $φ$-meson photoproduction from deuterons were measured for the first time at forward angles using linearly polarized photons at $E_γ$= 1.5-2.4 GeV. This reaction offers a unique way to directly access natural-parity Pomeron dynamics and gluon exchange at low energies. The cross sections at zero degrees increase with increasing photon energy. The decay asymmetries demonstrate a complete dominance of natural-parity exchange processes, showing that isovector unnatural-parity $π$-meson exchange is small. Nevertheless the deduced cross sections of $φ$-mesons from nucleons contributed by isoscalar t-channel exchange processes are not well described by the conventional Pomeron model.

We analyze the possibility to produce an intermediate Theta^+ via a KN->Θ+ formation process in gamma D-> pK^- X (X=nK^+,pK^0) reactions at some specific kinematical conditions, in which a pK^- pair is knocked out in the forward direction and its invariant mass is close to the mass of Lambda(1520). The Θ^+ signal may appear in the [γD,pK^-] missing mass distribution. The ratio of the signal (cross section at the Θ^+ peak position) to the smooth background processes varies from 0.7 to 2.5 depending on the spin and parity of Theta+, and it decreases correspondingly if the pK^- invariant mass is outside of the Lambda(1520)-resonance region. We analyze the recent CLAS search for the Theta+ in the gamma D ->pK^-nK^+ reaction and show that the conditions of this experiment greatly reduce the Theta+ formation process making it difficult to extract a Theta+ peak from the data.

We demonstrate that the coherence effect becomes manifest in a comparison of the $nK^+$ invariant mass distribution when the $pK^-$ invariant equals the $Λ(1520)$ mass. We analyze an effect of the coherent $Θ^+Λ(1520)$ photoproduction in $γD$ interaction near the threshold. We demonstrate that the coherence effect becomes manifest in a comparison of the $nK^+$ invariant mass distribution when the $pK^-$ invariant equals the $Λ(1520)$ mass. Our model calculations indicate a sizeable contribution of resonant and non-resonant background processes in the $γD\to np K^+K^-$ reaction which generally exceed the contribution of the coherent resonant channel. However, we find that the coherent $Θ^+Λ(1520)$ photoproduction is enhanced relative to the background processes in the forward hemisphere of the $pK^-$ pair photoproduction. Moreover, the coherence effect does not depend on the $Θ^+$ photoproduction amplitude and is defined by the probabilities of the $Λ(1520)$ photoproduction and the $Θ^+\to NK$ transition. Therefore, this coherence effect may be used as an independent method for studying the mechanism of $Θ^+$ production and $Θ^+$ properties.

The total cross section of the $φ$-nucleon interaction, $σ_{φN}$, has been estimated as $35^{+17}_{-11}$ mb using the $A$-dependence of the $φ$ photo-production yield and a Glauber-type multiple scattering theory. This value is much larger than $σ_{φN}$ in free space, suggesting that the $φ$ properties might change in the nuclear medium.

The lack of computational power within an organization for analyzing scientific data, and the distribution of knowledge (by scientists) and technologies (advanced scientific devices) are two major problems commonly observed in scientific disciplines. One such scientific discipline is brain science. The analysis of brain activity data gathered from the MEG (Magnetoencephalography) instrument is an important research topic in medical science since it helps doctors in identifying symptoms of diseases. The data needs to be analyzed exhaustively to efficiently diagnose and analyze brain functions and requires access to large-scale computational resources. The potential platform for solving such resource intensive applications is the Grid. This paper describes a MEG data analysis system developed by us, leveraging Grid technologies, primarily Nimrod-G, Gridbus, and Globus. This paper explains the application of economy-based grid scheduling algorithms to the problem domain for on-demand processing of analysis jobs.
