We study the kinematics of a pillar, namely G287.76-0.87, using three rotational lines of $^{12}$CO(5-4), $^{12}$CO(8-7), $^{12}$CO(11-10), and a fine structure line of [OI] $63\,μ$m Southern Carina observed by SOFIA/GREAT. This pillar is irradiated by the associated massive star cluster Trumpler 16, which includes $η$~Carina. Our analysis shows that the relative velocity of the pillar with respect to this ionization source is small, $\sim 1\,\rm km\,s^{-1}$, and the gas motion in the tail is more turbulent than in the head. We also performed analytical calculations to estimate the gas column density in local thermal equilibrium (LTE) conditions, which yields $N_{\rm CO}$ as $(\sim 0.2 -5)\times 10^{17}\,\rm cm^{-2}$. We further constrain the gas's physical properties in non-LTE conditions using RADEX. The non-LTE estimations result in $n_{\rm H_{2}} \simeq 10^{5}\,\rm cm^{-3}$ and $N_{\rm CO} \simeq 10^{16}\,\rm cm^{-2}$. We found that the thermal pressure within the G287.76-0.87 pillar is sufficiently high to make it stable for the surrounding hot gas and radiation feedback if the winds are not active. While they are active, stellar winds from the clustered stars sculpt the surrounding molecular cloud into pillars within the giant bubble around $η$~Carina.

This paper develops rollover prevention guarantees for mobile robots using control barrier function (CBF) theory, and demonstrates the method experimentally. We consider a safety measure based on a zero moment point condition through the lens of CBFs. However, these conditions depend on time-varying and noisy parameters. To address this issue, we present a differentiator-based safety-critical controller that estimates these parameters and pairs Input-to-State Stable (ISS) differentiator dynamics with CBFs to achieve rigorous safety guarantees. Additionally, to ensure safety in the presence of disturbances, we utilize a time-varying extension of Projection-to-State Safety (PSSf). The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated via experiments on a tracked robot with a rollover potential on steep slopes.

Model uncertainty poses a significant challenge to the implementation of safety-critical control systems. With this as motivation, this paper proposes a safe control design approach that guarantees the robustness of nonlinear feedback systems in the presence of matched or unmatched unmodelled system dynamics and external disturbances. Our approach couples control barrier functions (CBFs) with a new uncertainty/disturbance estimator to ensure robust safety against input and state-dependent model uncertainties. We prove upper bounds on the estimator's error and estimated outputs. We use an uncertainty estimator-based composite feedback control law to adaptively improve robust control performance under hard safety constraints by compensating for the matched uncertainty. Then, we robustify existing CBF constraints with this uncertainty estimate and the estimation error bounds to ensure robust safety via a quadratic program (CBF-QP). We also extend our method to higher-order CBFs (HOCBFs) to achieve safety under unmatched uncertainty, which causes relative degree differences with respect to control input and disturbance. We assume the relative degree difference is at most one, resulting in a second-order cone (SOC) condition. The proposed robust HOCBFs method is demonstrated in a simulation of an uncertain elastic actuator control problem. Finally, the efficacy of our method is experimentally demonstrated on a tracked robot with slope-induced matched and unmatched perturbations.

This paper is concerned with an optimal strategy for simultaneously trading a pair of stocks. The idea of pairs trading is to monitor their price movements and compare their relative strength over time. A pairs trade is triggered by the divergence of their prices and consists of a pair of positions to short the strong stock and to long the weak one. Such a strategy bets on the reversal of their price strengths. A round-trip trading strategy refers to opening and closing such a pair of security positions. Typical pairs-trading models usually assume a difference of the stock prices satisfies a mean-reversion equation. However, we consider the optimal pairs-trading problem by allowing the stock prices to follow general geometric Brownian motions. The objective is to trade the pairs over time to maximize an overall return with a fixed commission cost for each transaction. Initially, we allow the initial pairs position to be either long or flat. We then consider the problem when the initial pairs position may be long, flat, or short. In each case, the optimal policy is characterized by threshold curves obtained by solving the associated HJB equations.

Ensuring robot safety in complex environments is a difficult task due to actuation limits, such as torque bounds. This paper presents a safety-critical control framework that leverages learning-based switching between multiple backup controllers to formally guarantee safety under bounded control inputs while satisfying driver intention. By leveraging backup controllers designed to uphold safety and input constraints, backup control barrier functions (BCBFs) construct implicitly defined control invariance sets via a feasible quadratic program (QP). However, BCBF performance largely depends on the design and conservativeness of the chosen backup controller, especially in our setting of human-driven vehicles in complex, e.g, off-road, conditions. While conservativeness can be reduced by using multiple backup controllers, determining when to switch is an open problem. Consequently, we develop a broadcast scheme that estimates driver intention and integrates BCBFs with multiple backup strategies for human-robot interaction. An LSTM classifier uses data inputs from the robot, human, and safety algorithms to continually choose a backup controller in real-time. We demonstrate our method's efficacy on a dual-track robot in obstacle avoidance scenarios. Our framework guarantees robot safety while adhering to driver intention.

Classical T Tauri stars are low-mass pre-main sequence stars with an active circumstellar environment. In this work we present the identification and study of 260 Classical T Tauri stars using LAMOST Data Release 6, among which 104 stars are newly identified. We distinguish Classical T Tauri stars from Giants and main-sequence dwarfs based on the log g values and the presence of H (alpha) emission line and infrared excess that arises from the circumstellar accretion disk. We estimated the mass and age of 210 stars using the Gaia color-magnitude diagram. The age is from 0.1 to 20 Myr, where 90% of the stars have age below 10 Myr and the mass ranges between 0.11 to 1.9 M(solar). From the measured H(alpha) equivalent widths, we homogeneously estimated the mass accretion rates for 172 stars, with most values ranging from 10^-7 to 10^-10 M(solar) yr^-1. The mass accretion rates are found to follow a power law distribution with the mass of the star, having a relation of the form Macc proportional to M(star)^1.43 +/- 0.26, in agreement with previous studies.

This paper proposes a safety controller for control-affine nonlinear systems with unmodelled dynamics and disturbances to improve closed-loop robustness. Uncertainty estimation-based control barrier functions (CBFs) are utilized to ensure robust safety in the presence of model uncertainties, which may depend on control input and states. We present a new uncertainty/disturbance estimator with theoretical upper bounds on estimation error and estimated outputs, which are used to ensure robust safety by formulating a convex optimization problem using a high-order CBF. The possibly unsafe nominal feedback controller is augmented with the proposed estimator in two frameworks (1) an uncertainty compensator and (2) a robustifying reformulation of CBF constraint with respect to the estimator outputs. The former scheme ensures safety with performance improvement by adaptively rejecting the matched uncertainty. The second method uses uncertainty estimation to robustify higher-order CBFs for safety-critical control. The proposed methods are demonstrated in simulations of an uncertain adaptive cruise control problem and a multirotor obstacle avoidance situation.

Future NASA lander missions to icy moons will require completely automated, accurate, and data efficient calibration methods for the robot manipulator arms that sample icy terrains in the lander's vicinity. To support this need, this paper presents a Gaussian Process (GP) approach to the classical manipulator kinematic calibration process. Instead of identifying a corrected set of Denavit-Hartenberg kinematic parameters, a set of GPs models the residual kinematic error of the arm over the workspace. More importantly, this modeling framework allows a Gaussian Process Upper Confident Bound (GP-UCB) algorithm to efficiently and adaptively select the calibration's measurement points so as to minimize the number of experiments, and therefore minimize the time needed for recalibration. The method is demonstrated in simulation on a simple 2-DOF arm, a 6 DOF arm whose geometry is a candidate for a future NASA mission, and a 7 DOF Barrett WAM arm.

This work provides formal safety guarantees for control systems with disturbance. A disturbance observer-based robust safety-critical controller is proposed, that estimates the effect of the disturbance on safety and utilizes this estimate with control barrier functions to attain provably safe dynamic behavior. The observer error bound - which consists of transient and steady-state parts - is quantified, and the system is endowed with robustness against this error via the proposed controller. An adaptive cruise control problem is used as illustrative example through simulations including real disturbance data.

In a complex real-time operating environment, external disturbances and uncertainties adversely affect the safety, stability, and performance of dynamical systems. This paper presents a robust stabilizing safety-critical controller synthesis framework with control Lyapunov functions (CLFs) and control barrier functions (CBFs) in the presence of disturbance. A high-gain input observer method is adapted to estimate the time-varying unmodelled dynamics of the CBF with an error bound using the first-order time derivative of the CBF. This approach leads to an easily tunable low order disturbance estimator structure with a design parameter as it utilizes only the CBF constraint. The estimated unknown input and associated error bound are used to ensure robust safety and exponential stability by formulating a CLF-CBF quadratic program. The proposed method is applicable to both relative degree one and higher relative degree CBF constraints. The efficacy of the proposed approach is demonstrated using a numerical simulations of an adaptive cruise control system and a Segway platform with an external disturbance.

The probability distribution of the reflection coefficient for light reflected from a one-dimensional random amplifying medium with {\it cross-correlated} spatial disorder in the real and the imaginary parts of the refractive index is derived using the method of invariant imbedding. The statistics of fluctuations have been obtained for both the correlated telegraph noise and the Gaussian white-noise models for the disorder. In both cases, an enhanced backscattering (super-reflection with reflection coefficient greater than unity) results because of coherent feedback due to Anderson localization and coherent amplification in the medium. The results show that the effect of randomness in the imaginary part of the refractive index on localization and super-reflection is qualitatively different.
