We analyze the existence of vector spaces of large dimension inside the set $\mathcal{C}(L, \K) \setminus \overline{\mathcal{A}}$, where $L$ is a compact Hausdorff space and $\mathcal{A}$ is a self-adjoint subalgebra of $\mathcal C(L, \K)$ that vanishes nowhere on $L$ and does not necessarily separate the points of $L$. The results depend strongly on an equivalence relation that is defined on the algebra $\mathcal{A}$, denoted by $\sim_{\mathcal{A}}$, and a cardinal number that depends on $\sim_{\mathcal{A}}$ which we call the order of $\sim_{\mathcal{A}}$. We then introduce two different cases, when the order of $\sim_{\mathcal{A}}$ is finite or infinite. In the finite case, we show that $\mathcal{C}(L, \K) \setminus \overline{\mathcal{A}}$ is $n$-lineable but not $(n+1)$-lineable with $n$ being the order of $\sim_{\mathcal{A}}$. On the other hand, when the order of $\sim_{\mathcal{A}}$ is infinite, we obtain general results assuming, for instance, that the codimension of the closure of $\mathcal{A}$ is infinite or when $L$ is sequentially compact. To be more precise, we introduce the notion of the Stone-Weiestrass character of $L$ which is closely related to the topological weight of $L$ and allows us to describe the lineability of $\mathcal{C}(L, \K) \setminus \overline{\mathcal{A}}$ in terms of the Stone-Weierstrass character of subsets of $\sim_{\mathcal A}$. We also prove, in the classical case, that $(\mathcal{C}(\partial{D}, \C) \setminus \overline{\mbox{Pol}(\partial{D})}) \cup \{0\}$ (where $\mbox{Pol}(\partial{D})$ is the set of all complex polynomials in one variable restricted to the boundary of the unit disk) contains an isometric copy of $\text{Hol}(\partial{D})$ and is strongly $\mathfrak c$-algebrable, extending previous results from the literature.

In this paper we are interested in exploring the prevalence of these unusual nets in terms of linearity. Each problem is approached with different methods, which have their own interest. As our results are presented in the contexts of topological vector spaces and normed spaces, they generalize or improve a few ones in the literature. We study lineability properties of families of (1) nets that are weakly convergent and unbounded, (2) nets that fail the Banach-Steinhaus theorem, (3) nets indexed by a regular cardinal $κ$ that are weakly dense and norm-unbounded, and finally (4) convergent series which have associated nets that are divergent.

Since strong subdifferentiability of a dual space implies reflexivity, we improve some known results on the reflexivity of spaces of $N$-homogeneous polynomials and $N$-linear map**s. Concerning the projective (symmetric) tensor norms, we provide positive results on the subsets $U$ and $U_s$ of elementary tensors on the unit spheres of $X \hat{\otimes}_π\cdots \hat{\otimes}_πX$ and $\hat{\otimes}_{π_s,N} X$, respectively. We study holomorphic functions attaining weighted norms and its connections with the classical theory of norm attaining holomorphic functions. We prove that there are polynomials on $\ell_p$ which attain their weighted but not their supremum norm and viceversa. Nevertheless, we also prove that in the context of polynomials of fixed degree both norms are in fact equivalent. This leads us to the main problem of the paper, namely, whether the holomorphic functions attaining their weighted norm are dense. Although we exhibit an example where this does not hold, as the main theorem of our paper, we prove the denseness provided the domain space is uniformly convex. In fact, we provide a Bollobás type theorem in this setting. For the proof of such a result we develop a new geometric technique.

IoT devices suffer from resource limitations, such as processor, RAM, and disc storage. These limitations become more evident when handling demanding applications, such as deep learning, well-known for their heavy computational requirements. A case in point is robot pose estimation, an application that predicts the critical points of the desired image object. One way to mitigate processing and storage problems is compressing that deep learning application. This paper proposes a new CNN for the pose estimation while applying the compression techniques of pruning and quantization to reduce his demands and improve the response time. While the pruning process reduces the total number of parameters required for inference, quantization decreases the precision of the floating-point. We run the approach using a pose estimation task for a robotic arm and compare the results in a high-end device and a constrained device. As metrics, we consider the number of Floating-point Operations Per Second(FLOPS), the total of mathematical computations, the calculation of parameters, the inference time, and the number of video frames processed per second. In addition, we undertake a qualitative evaluation where we compare the output image predicted for each pruned network with the corresponding original one. We reduce the originally proposed network to a 70% pruning rate, implying an 88.86% reduction in parameters, 94.45% reduction in FLOPS, and for the disc storage, we reduced the requirement in 70% while increasing error by a mere $1\%$. With regard input image processing, this metric increases from 11.71 FPS to 41.9 FPS for the Desktop case. When using the constrained device, image processing augmented from 2.86 FPS to 10.04 FPS. The higher processing rate of image frames achieved by the proposed approach allows a much shorter response time.

We prove that $\mathcal{Y}$ admits a $C^\infty$-smooth norm that locally depends on finitely many coordinates (LFC, for short), as well as a polyhedral norm that locally depends on finitely many coordinates. As a consequence, we also prove that $\mathcal{Y}$ admits locally finite, $σ$-uniformly discrete $C^\infty$-smooth and LFC partitions of unity and a $C^1$-smooth LUR norm. This theorem substantially generalises several results present in the literature and gives a complete picture concerning smoothness in such dense subspaces. Our result covers, for instance, every WLD Banach space (hence, all reflexive ones), $L_1(μ)$ for every measure $μ$, $\ell_\infty(Γ)$ spaces for every set $Γ$, $C(K)$ spaces where $K$ is a Valdivia compactum or a compact Abelian group, duals of Asplund spaces, or preduals of Von Neumann algebras. This can be seen as a strong (although local) Bollobás theorem for operators. We prove that the pair $(X, Y)$ has the {\bf L}$_{o,o}$ for compact operators if and only if so does $(X, \K)$ for linear functionals. This generalizes at once some results due to D. Sain and J. Moreover, we present a complete characterization for when $(X \pten Y, \K)$ satisfies the {\bf L}$_{o,o}$ for linear functionals under strict convexity or Kadec-Klee property assumptions in one of the spaces. As a consequence, we generalize some results in the literature related to the strongly subdifferentiability of the projective tensor product and show that $(L_p(μ) \times L_q(ν); \K)$ cannot satisfy the {\bf L}$_{o,o}$ for bilinear forms.

In this paper, we introduce a concept of norm-attainment in the projective symmetric tensor product $\widehat{\otimes}_{π,s,N} X$ of a Banach space $X$, which turns out to be naturally related to the classical norm-attainment of $N$-homogeneous polynomials on $X$. Due to this relation, we can prove that there exist symmetric tensors that do not attain their norms, which allows us to study the problem of when the set of norm-attaining elements in $\widehat{\otimes}_{π,s,N} X$ is dense. We show that the set of all norm-attaining symmetric tensors is dense in $\widehat{\otimes}_{π,s,N} X$ for a large set of Banach spaces as $L_p$-spaces, isometric $L_1$-predual spaces or Banach spaces with monotone Schauder basis, among others. Next, we prove that if $X^*$ satisfies the Radon-Nikodým and the approximation property, then the set of all norm-attaining symmetric tensors in $\widehat{\otimes}_{π,s,N} X^*$ is dense. From these techniques, we can present new examples of Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ such that the set of all norm-attaining tensors in the projective tensor product $X \widehat{\otimes}_πY$ is dense, answering positively an open question from the paper by S. This property was recently introduced in an article by R. Aron, D. García, D. Pelegrino and E. Teixeira, raising several open questions. The aim of the present paper is to contribute to the better knowledge of the WMP and its limitations. Namely, we provide sufficient conditions for a pair of Banach spaces to fail the WMP and study the behaviour of this property with respect to quotients, subspaces, and direct sums, which open the gate to present several consequences. For instance, we deal with pairs of the form $(L_p[0,1], L_q[0,1])$, proving that these pairs fail the WMP whenever $p>2$ or $q<2$. We also show that, under certain conditions on $E$, the assumption that $(E, F)$ has the WMP for every Banach space $F$ implies that $E$ must be finite dimensional. On the other hand, we show that $(E, F)$ has the WMP for every reflexive space $E$ if and only if $F$ has the Schur property. We also give a complete characterization for the pairs $(\ell_s \oplus_p \ell_p, \ell_s \oplus_q \ell_q)$ to have the WMP by calculating the moduli of asymptotic uniform convexity of $\ell_s \oplus_p \ell_p$ and of asymptotic uniform smoothness of $\ell_s \oplus_q \ell_q$ when $1 < p \leq s \leq q < \infty$. We conclude the paper by discussing some variants of the WMP and presenting a list of open problems on the topic of the paper.

In this paper we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of non-norm-attaining operators in $\mathcal{L}(E, F)$. By using a theorem due to Pfitzner on James boundaries, we show that if there exists a relatively compact set $K$ of $\mathcal{L}(E, F)$ (in the weak operator topology) such that $0$ is an element of its closure (in the weak operator topology) but it is not in its norm closed convex hull, then we can guarantee the existence of an operator which does not attain its norm. This allows us to provide the following generalization of results due to Holub and Mujica. If $E$ is a reflexive space, $F$ is an arbitrary Banach space, and the pair $(E, F)$ has the bounded compact approximation property, then the following are equivalent:
(i) $\mathcal{K}(E, F) = \mathcal{L}(E, F)$;
(ii) Every operator from $E$ into $F$ attains its norm;
(iii) $(\mathcal{L}(E,F), τ_c)^* = (\mathcal{L}(E, F), \| \cdot \|)^*$;
where $τ_c$ denotes the topology of compact convergence. We conclude the paper presenting a characterization of the Schur property in terms of norm-attaining operators.

In this paper, we are interested in studying two properties related to the denseness of the operators which attain their numerical radius: the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás point and operator properties for numerical radius (BPBpp-nu and BPBop-nu, respectively). We prove that every Banach space with micro-transitive norm and second numerical index strictly positive satisfy the BPBpp-nu and that, if the numerical index of $X$ is 1, only one-dimensional spaces enjoy it. On the other hand, we show that the BPBop-nu is a very restrictive property: under some general assumptions, it holds only for one-dimensional spaces. We also consider two weaker properties, the local versions of BPBpp-nu and BPBop-nu, where the $η$ which appears in their definition does not depend just on $ε> 0$ but also on a state $(x, x^*)$ or on a numerical radius one operator $T$. We address the relation between the local BPBpp-nu and the strong subdifferentiability of the norm of the space $X$. We show that finite dimensional spaces and $c_0$ are examples of Banach spaces satisfying the local BPBpp-nu, and we exhibit an example of a Banach space with strongly subdifferentiable norm failing it. We finish the paper by showing that finite dimensional spaces satisfy the local BPBop-nu and that, if $X$ has strictly positive numerical index and has the approximation property, this property is equivalent to finite dimensionality.

In this paper we study the structure of the set $\mbox{Hom}(X,\mathbb{R})$ of all lattice homomorphisms from a Banach lattice $X$ into $\mathbb{R}$. Using the relation among lattice homomorphisms and disjoint families, we prove that the topological dual of the free Banach lattice $FBL(A)$ generated by a set $A$ contains a disjoint family of cardinality $2^{|A|}$, answering a question of B. de Pagter and A.W. Wickstead. We also deal with norm-attaining lattice homomorphisms. For classical Banach lattices, as $c_0$, $L_p$-, and $C(K)$-spaces, every lattice homomorphism on it attains its norm, which shows, in particular, that there is no James theorem for this class of functions. We prove that, indeed, every lattice homomorphism on $X$ and $C(K,X)$ attains its norm whenever $X$ has order continuous norm. On the other hand, we provide what seems to be the first example in the literature of a lattice homomorphism which does not attain its norm. In general, we study the existence and characterization of lattice homomorphisms not attaining their norm in free Banach lattices. As a consequence, it is shown that no Bishop-Phelps type theorem holds true in the Banach lattice setting, i.e. not every lattice homomorphism can be approximated by norm-attaining lattice homomorphisms.

We get the analogous result when the topological dual $E^*$ of $E$ is almost square. We finish the paper by proving that the norm of the free Banach lattice generated by a Banach space of dimension $ \geq 2$ is nowhere Fréchet differentiable. Moreover, we discuss some open problems on this topic.

Given two Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$, we introduce and study a concept of norm-attainment in the space of nuclear operators $\mathcal{N}(X,Y)$ and in the projective tensor product space $X \widehat{\otimes}_πY$. We exhibit positive and negative examples where both previous norm-attainment hold. We also study the problem of whether the class of elements which attain their norms in $\mathcal{N}(X,Y)$ and in $X\widehat{\otimes}_πY$ is dense or not. We prove that, for both concepts, the density of norm-attaining elements holds for a large class of Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ which, in particular, covers all classical Banach spaces. Nevertheless, we present Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ failing the approximation property in such a way that the class of elements in $X\widehat{\otimes}_πY$ which attain their projective norms is not dense. We also discuss some relations and applications of our work to the classical theory of norm-attaining operators throughout the paper.

Rosa established two well known conjectures: all trees are graceful (1966) and all triangular cacti are graceful (1988). In order to contribute to both conjectures we study graceful labelings in the context of graph games. The Graceful game was introduced by Tuza in 2017 as a two-players game on a connected graph in which the players Alice and Bob take turns labeling the vertices with distinct integers from 0 to $m$. Alice's goal is to gracefully label the graph as Bob's goal is to prevent it from happening. In this work, we study winning strategies for Alice and Bob in complete graphs, paths, cycles, complete bipartite graphs, caterpillars, prisms, wheels, helms, webs, gear graphs, hypercubes and some powers of paths.

By contrast, no dense subspace of $c_0(ω_1)$ admits an analytic norm. In the second part, we prove (solving in particular an open problem of Guirao, Montesinos, and Zizler) that every Banach space with a long unconditional Schauder basis contains a dense subspace that admits a $C^{\infty}$-smooth norm. Finally, we prove that there is a proper dense subspace of $\ell_{\infty}^{c}(ω_1)$ that admits no Gâteaux smooth norm. In this paper, we are interested in studying the set $\mathcal{A}_{\|\cdot\|}(X, Y)$ of all norm-attaining operators $T$ from $X$ into $Y$ satisfying the following: given $ε>0$, there exists $η$ such that if $\|Tx\| > 1 - η$, then there is $x_0$ such that $\| x_0 - x\| < ε$ and $T$ itself attains its norm at $x_0$. We show that every norm one functional on $c_0$ which attains its norm belongs to $\mathcal{A}_{\|\cdot\|}(c_0, \mathbb{K})$. Also, we prove that the analogous result holds neither for $\mathcal{A}_{\|\cdot\|}(\ell_1, \mathbb{K})$ nor $\mathcal{A}_{\|\cdot\|}(\ell_{\infty}, \mathbb{K})$. Under some assumptions, we show that the sphere of the compact operators belongs to $\mathcal{A}_{\|\cdot\|}(X, Y)$ and that this is no longer true when some of these hypotheses are dropped. The analogous set $\mathcal{A}_{nu}(X)$ for numerical radius of an operator instead of its norm is also defined and studied. We present a complete characterization for the diagonal operators which belong to the sets $\mathcal{A}_{\| \cdot \|}(X, X)$ and $\mathcal{A}_{nu}(X)$ when $X=c_0$ or $\ell_p$. As a consequence, we get that the canonical projections $P_N$ on these spaces belong to our sets. We give examples of operators on infinite dimensional Banach spaces which belong to $\mathcal{A}_{\| \cdot \|}(X, X)$ but not to $\mathcal{A}_{nu}(X)$ and vice-versa. Finally, we establish some techniques which allow us to connect both sets by using direct sums.

Null PR structures have received much attention due to their unusual properties and potential applications in different fields, such as aeronautics and bio-engineering. Here, we present a new and simple near-zero PR 2D topological model based on a structural block composed of two smooth and rigid bars connected by a soft membrane or spring. It is not based on re-entrant or honeycomb-like configurations, which have been the basis of many null or quasi-null PR models. Our topological model was 3D printed and the experimentally obtained PR was$-0.003\,\pm 0.001\,$, which is one the closest to zero value ever reported. This topological model can be easily extended to 3D systems and with compression in any direction. The advantages and disadvantages of these models are also addressed.

We study Banach spaces whose group of isometries acts micro-transitively on the unit sphere. We introduce a weaker property, which one-complemented subspaces inherit, that we call uniform micro-semitransitivity. We prove a number of results about both micro-transitive and uniformly micro-semitransitive spaces, including that they are uniformly convex and uniformly smooth, and that they form a self-dual class. To this end, we relate the fact that the group of isometries acts micro-transitively with a property of operators called the pointwise Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property and use some known results on it. Besides, we show that if there is a non-Hilbertian non-separable Banach space with uniform micro-semitransitive (or micro-transitive) norm, then there is a non-Hilbertian separable one. Finally, we show that an $L_p(μ)$ space is micro-transitive or uniformly micro-semitransitive only when $p=2$.

We study those properties for bilinear forms on $\ell_p \times \ell_q$ using the strong subdifferentiability of the norm of the Banach space $\ell_p \hat{\otimes}_π \ell_{q}$. Moreover, we present necessary and sufficient conditions for the norm of a Banach space $Y$ to be strongly subdifferentiable through the study of these properties for bilinear map**s on $\ell_1^N \times Y$.

Two experimental studies reported the spontaneous formation of amorphous and crystalline structures of C60 intercalated between graphene and a substrate. They observed interesting phenomena ranging from reaction between C60 molecules under graphene to graphene sagging between the molecules and control of strain in graphene. Motivated by these works, we performed fully atomistic reactive molecular dynamics simulations to study the formation and thermal stability of graphene wrinkles as well as graphene attachment to and detachment from the substrate when graphene is laid over a previously distributed array of C60 molecules on a copper substrate at different values of temperature. As graphene compresses the C60 molecules against the substrate, and graphene attachment to the substrate between C60s ("C60s" stands for plural of C60) depends on the height of graphene wrinkles, configurations with both frozen and non-frozen C60s structures were investigated in order to verify the experimental result of stable sagged graphene when the distance between C60s is about 4 nm and height of graphene wrinkles is about 0.8 nm. Below the distance of 4 nm between C60s, graphene becomes locally suspended and less strained. We show that this happens when C60s are allowed to deform under the compressive action of graphene. If we keep the C60s frozen, spontaneous "blanketing" of graphene happens only when the distance between them are equal or above 7 nm. Both above results for the existence of stable sagged graphene for C60 distances of 4 or 7 nm are shown to agree with a mechanical model relating the rigidity of graphene to the energy of graphene-substrate adhesion. In particular, this study might help the development of 2D confined nanoreactors that are considered in literature to be the next advanced step on chemical reactions.

We can still make progress on the problem, however, by considering other natural parameters. Badkobeh et al.\ (IPL, 2013) and Amir et al.\ (TCS, 2016) gave algorithms that index a binary string in $O (n + ρ^2 \log ρ)$ time, where $n$ is the length and $ρ$ is the number of runs, and Giaquinta and Grabowski (IPL, 2013) gave one that runs in $O (n + ρ^2)$ time. In this paper we propose a new and very simple algorithm that also runs in $O(n + ρ^2)$ time and can be extended either so that the index returns the position of a match (if there is one), or so that the algorithm uses only $O (n)$ bits of space.

We investigate a pair of Banach spaces $(X, Y)$ such that every operator from $X$ into $Y$ is approximated by operators which attains its norm at the same point where the original operator almost attains its norm. In this case, we say that such a pair has the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás point property (BPBpp). We characterize uniform smoothness in terms of BPBpp and we give some examples of pairs $(X, Y)$ which have and fail this property. Some stability results are obtained about $\ell_1$ and $\ell_\infty$ sums of Banach spaces and we also study this property for bilinear map**s.

The strong Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property

In this paper we introduce the strong Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property (sBPBp) for bounded linear operators between two Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$. This property is motivated by a Kim-Lee result which states, under our notation, that a Banach space $X$ is uniformly convex if and only if the pair $(X,\mathbb{K})$ satisfies the sBPBp. Positive results of pairs of Banach spaces $(X,Y)$ satisfying this property are given and concrete pairs of Banach spaces $(X, Y)$ failing it are exhibited. A complete characterization of the sBPBp for the pairs $(\ell_p, \ell_q)$ is also provided.

Let $X$, $Y$ be Banach spaces. If $(c_0,Y)$ has the BPBp for compact operators, then so do $(C_0(L),Y)$ for every locally compact Hausdorff topological space $L$ and $(X,Y)$ whenever $X^*$ is isometrically isomorphic to $\ell_1$. If $X^*$ has the Radon-Nikodým property and $(\ell_1(X),Y)$ has the BPBp for compact operators, then so does $(L_1(μ,X),Y)$ for every positive measure $μ$; as a consequence, $(L_1(μ,X),Y)$ has the the BPBp for compact operators when $X$ and $Y$ are finite-dimensional or $Y$ is a Hilbert space and $X=c_0$ or $X=L_p(ν)$ for any positive measure $ν$ and $1< p< \infty$. For $1\leqslant p <\infty$, if $(X,\ell_p(Y))$ has the BPBp for compact operators, then so does $(X,L_p(μ,Y))$ for every positive measure $μ$ such that $L_1(μ)$ is infinite-dimensional. If $(X,Y)$ has the BPBp for compact operators, then so do $(X,L_\infty(μ,Y))$ for every $σ$-finite positive measure $μ$ and $(X,C(K,Y))$ for every compact Hausdorff topological space $K$.

Unfortunately, their result does not lead to an algorithm that allows to recognize these graphs efficiently.
We show that for every fixed non-negative integer $k$, the recognition of the connected $K_4$-free graphs $G$ with $γ_R(G)-γ_{r2}(G)=k$ is NP-hard, which implies that there is most likely no good characterization of these graphs. We characterize the graphs $G$ such that $γ_{r2}(H)=γ_R(H)$ for every induced subgraph $H$ of $G$, and collect several properties of the graphs $G$ with $γ_R(G)=\frac{3}{2}γ_{r2}(G)$.

We present a unified proof of a common generalization of these two results. For every positive integer $k$, we specify a set ${\cal H}_k$ of graphs of order at least $4k+4$ and at most $4k^2-2k$ such that every maximal outerplanar graph $G$ of order $n$ at least $2k+1$ that does not belong to ${\cal H}_k$ has a dominating set $D$ of order at most $\lfloor\frac{kn}{2k+1}\rfloor$ such that every component of the subgraph $G[D]$ of $G$ induced by $D$ has order at least $k$.

Abstract:
We provide a constructive characterization of the trees for which the Roman domination number strongly equals the weak Roman domination number, that is, for which every weak Roman dominating function of minimum weight is a Roman dominating function. Our characterization is based on five simple extension operations, and reveals several structural properties of these trees.

We numerically study the vortex-vortex interaction in multi-component homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensates within the realm of the Gross-Pitaevskii theory. We provide strong evidences that pairwise vortex interaction captures the underlying mechanisms which determine the geometric configuration of the vortices, such as different lattices in many-vortex states, as well as the bound vortex states with two (dimer) or three (trimer) vortices. Specifically, we discuss and apply our theoretical approach to investigate intra- and inter-component vortex-vortex interactions in two- and three-component Bose-Einstein condensates, thereby shedding light on the formation of the exotic vortex configurations. These results correlate with current experimental efforts in multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates, and the understanding of the role of vortex interactions in multiband superconductors.

We report here an atomistic study of the mechanical deformation of AuxCu(1-x) atomic-size wires (NWs) by means of high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) experiments. Molecular dynamics simulations were also carried out in order to obtain deeper insights on the dynamical properties of stretched NWs. The mechanical properties are significantly dependent on the chemical composition that evolves in time at the junction; some structures exhibit a remarkable de-alloying behavior. Also, our results represent the first experimental realization of mixed linear atomic chains (LACs) among transition and noble metals; in particular, surface energies induce chemical gradients on NW surfaces that can be exploited to control the relative LAC compositions (different number of gold and copper atoms). The implications of these results for nanocatalysis and spin transport of one-atom-thick metal wires are addressed.

Biclique-colouring is a colouring of the vertices of a graph in such a way that no maximal complete bipartite subgraph with at least one edge is monochromatic. We show that it is coNP-complete to check whether a given function that associates a colour to each vertex is a biclique-colouring, a result that justifies the search for structured classes where the biclique-colouring problem could be efficiently solved. We consider biclique-colouring restricted to powers of paths and powers of cycles. We determine the biclique-chromatic number of powers of paths and powers of cycles. The biclique-chromatic number of a power of a path P_{n}^{k} is max(2k + 2 - n, 2) if n >= k + 1 and exactly n otherwise. The biclique-chromatic number of a power of a cycle C_n^k is at most 3 if n >= 2k + 2 and exactly n otherwise; we additionally determine the powers of cycles that are 2-biclique-colourable. All proofs are algorithmic and provide polynomial-time biclique-colouring algorithms for graphs in the investigated classes.

A simple model is developed to predict the complex mechanical properties of carbon nanotube sheets (buckypaper) [Hall \textit{et al.}, \textit{Science} \textbf{320} 504 (2008)]. Fabricated using a similar method to that deployed for making writing paper, these buckypapers can have in-plane Poisson's ratios changed from positive to negative, becoming auxetic, as multiwalled carbon nanotubes are increasingly mixed with single-walled carbon nanotubes. Essential structural features of the buckypapers are incorporated into the model: isotropic in-plane mechanical properties, nanotubes preferentially oriented in the sheet plane, and freedom to undergo stress-induced elongation by both angle and length changes. The expressions derived for the Poisson's ratios enabled quantitative prediction of both observed properties and remarkable new properties obtainable by structural modification.

The mechanical properties of the so-called `super' carbon nanotubes (STs) are investigated using classical molecular dynamics simulations. The STs are built from single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) connected by Y-like junctions forming an ordered carbon nanotube network that is then rolled into a seamless cylinder. We observed that the ST behavior under tensile tests is similar to the one presented by fishing nets. This interesting behavior provides a way to vary the accessible channels to the inner parts of STs by applying external mechanical load. The Young's modulus is dependent on the ST chirality and it inversely varies with the ST radius. Smaller reduction of breaking strain values due to temperature increase is predicted for zigzag STs compared to SWCNTs. The results show that, for STs with radius ~ 5 nm, the junctions between the constituent SWCNTs play an important role on the fracture process. The Young's modulus and tensile strength were estimated for hierarchical higher-order STs using scaling laws related to the ST fractal dimension. The obtained mechanical properties suggest that STs may be used in the development of new porous, flexible, and high-strength materials.
