To empirically evaluate the axial vector meson's contribution to the hadronic light-by-light contribution to the muon $g-2$, we present a phenomenological study of the $γγ^*\to K\bar{K}^*(892)$ process by including the $s$-channel production of the $η(1475)$ and $f_1(1420)$ resonances. The non-resonant channel via $K$- and $K^*$-exchanges is investigated carefully by performing the Lorentz tensor decomposition and is constructed to yield a correct high-energy Regge behavior. The transition form factor of $f_1(1420)$ is adjusted to achieve a reasonable description of the existing L3 data. We estimate the polarized $γγ^*\to K\bar{K}^*(892)$ cross sections, which serve as predictions for the forthcoming BESIII data. We also demonstrate the possibility to model-independently extract the transition form factors of $f_1(1420)$ from the polarized cross sections.

The latter were obtained using a data-driven $N/D$ method in which the fits were performed to the different sets of experimental data on two-photon fusion processes with $πη$ and $K\bar{K}$ final states. This yields the preliminary dispersive estimate $a_μ^{HLbL}[a_0(980)]_{resc.}=-0.46(2)\times 10^{-11}$.

This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. In summary, this document provides an exciting rationale for the energy upgrade of CEBAF to 22 GeV, outlining the transformative scientific potential that lies within reach, and the remarkable opportunities it offers for advancing our understanding of hadron physics and related fundamental phenomena.

The crucial input in the analysis is the Adler zero, whose position we extracted from the chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading order with the uncertainties propagated from the low-energy constants.

Furthermore, the $γγ\toρ^{\pm} π^{\mp}\toπ^{+}π^-π^0$ channel, which is essential for a description in the low-energy region, is investigated carefully by introducing the complete set of gauge invariant and Lorentz-covariant tensors for the $γγ\toρ^\pm π^\mp$ subprocess. The full amplitude is constructed to yield a correct high-energy Regge behavior. Within our model, we achieve a very reasonable description of ARGUS and L3 data of the total cross section, as well as of the $π^\pmπ^0$ and $π^+π^-$ invariant mass distributions. We also predict the invariant mass distributions in the $γγ$ center-of-mass energy range from $0.8$ GeV to $2.0$ GeV, which will be studied by the forthcoming data of the BESIII collaboration.

In this paper, we present an improved parameterization of the elastic scattering of spin-0 particles, which is based on a dispersive representation for the inverse scattering amplitude. Besides being based on well known general principles, the requirement that the inverse amplitude should satisfy the dispersion relation significantly constrains its possible forms and have not been incorporated in the existing parameterizations so far. While the right-hand cut of the inverse scattering amplitude is controlled by unitarity, the contribution from the left-hand cut, which comes from the crossing symmetry, is commonly ignored or incorporated improperly. The latter is parameterized using the expansion in a suitably constructed conformal variable, which accounts for its analytic structure. The correct implementations of the Adler zero and threshold factors for angular momentum $J>0$ are discussed in detail as well. The amplitudes are written in a compact analytic form and provide a useful tool to analyze current and future lattice data in the elastic region improving upon the commonly used Breit-Wigner or K-matrix approaches.

We present a data-driven analysis of the S-wave $ππ\to ππ\,(I=0,2)$ and $πK \to πK\,(I=1/2, 3/2)$ reactions using the partial-wave dispersion relation. The contributions from the left-hand cuts are parametrized using the expansion in a suitably constructed conformal variable, which accounts for its analytical structure. The partial-wave dispersion relation is solved numerically using the $N/D$ method. The fits to the experimental data supplemented with the constraints from chiral perturbation theory at threshold and Adler zero give the results consistent with Roy-like (Roy-Steiner) analyses. For the $ππ$ scattering we present the coupled-channel analysis by including additionally the $K\bar{K}$ channel. By the analytic continuation to the complex plane, we found poles associated with the lightest scalar resonances $σ/f_0(500)$, $f_0(980)$, and $κ/K_0^*(700)$. For all the channels we also performed the fits directly to the Roy-like (Roy-Steiner) solutions in the physical region, in order to minimize the $N/D$ uncertainties in the complex plane and to extract the most constrained Omnès functions.

For the $S$-wave contribution, we adopt a partial-wave dispersive representation, which is solved using the $N/D$ ansatz. The left-hand cuts are accounted for using the model-independent conformal expansion. The $D$-wave $χ_{c2}(3930)$ state is described as a Breit-Wigner resonance. The resulting fits are consistent with the data on the invariant mass distribution of the $e^+e^- \to J/ψD\bar{D}$ process. Performing an analytic continuation to the complex $s$-plane, we find no evidence of a pole corresponding to the broad resonance $X(3860)$ reported by the Belle Collaboration. Instead, we find a clear bound state below the $D\bar{D}$ threshold at $\sqrt{s_B} = 3695(4)$ MeV, confirming the previous phenomenological and lattice predictions.

We consider the contribution of scalar resonances to hadronic light-by-light scattering in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. While the $f_0(500)$ has already been addressed in previous work using dispersion relations, heavier scalar resonances have only been estimated in hadronic models so far. Here, we compare an implementation of the $f_0(980)$ resonance in terms of the coupled-channel $S$-waves for $γ^*γ^*\to ππ/\bar K K$ to a narrow-width approximation, which indicates $a_μ^{\text{HLbL}}[f_0(980)]=-0.2(2)\times 10^{-11}$. With a similar estimate for the $a_0(980)$, the combined effect is thus well below $1\times 10^{-11}$ in absolute value. We also estimate the contribution of heavier scalar resonances. In view of the very uncertain situation concerning their two-photon couplings we suggest to treat them together with other resonances of similar mass when imposing the matching to short-distance constraints. Our final result is a refined estimate of the $S$-wave rescattering effects in the $ππ$ and $\bar K K$ channel up to about $1.3$ GeV and including a narrow-width evaluation of the $a_0(980)$: $a_μ^\text{HLbL}[\text{scalars}]=-9(1)\times 10^{-11}$.

We review the present status of the Standard Model calculation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. This is performed in a perturbative expansion in the fine-structure constant $α$ and is broken down into pure QED, electroweak, and hadronic contributions. The pure QED contribution is by far the largest and has been evaluated up to and including $\mathcal{O}(α^5)$ with negligible numerical uncertainty. The electroweak contribution is suppressed by $(m_μ/M_W)^2$ and only shows up at the level of the seventh significant digit. It has been evaluated up to two loops and is known to better than one percent. Hadronic contributions are the most difficult to calculate and are responsible for almost all of the theoretical uncertainty. The leading hadronic contribution appears at $\mathcal{O}(α^2)$ and is due to hadronic vacuum polarization, whereas at $\mathcal{O}(α^3)$ the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution appears. Given the low characteristic scale of this observable, these contributions have to be calculated with nonperturbative methods, in particular, dispersion relations and the lattice approach to QCD. The largest part of this review is dedicated to a detailed account of recent efforts to improve the calculation of these two contributions with either a data-driven, dispersive approach, or a first-principle, lattice-QCD approach. The final result reads $a_μ^\text{SM}=116\,591\,810(43)\times 10^{-11}$ and is smaller than the Brookhaven measurement by 3.7$σ$. The experimental uncertainty will soon be reduced by up to a factor four by the new experiment currently running at Fermilab, and also by the future J-PARC experiment. This and the prospects to further reduce the theoretical uncertainty in the near future-which are also discussed here-make this quantity one of the most promising places to look for evidence of new physics.

We generalize a forward light-by-light scattering sum rule to the case of heavy quarkonium radiative transitions. We apply such sum rule to the bottomonium states, and use available data on radiative transitions in its evaluation. For the transitions that are not known experimentally, we provide theoretical estimates within a potential model, and consider the spread between similar approaches in the literature as an estimate for the model error. For the $Υ(1S)$, $Υ(2S)$, and $Υ(3S)$ states we observe that, due to a cancellation between transitions involving $χ_{b0}, χ_{b1}$, and $χ_{b2}$ states, the sum rule is satisfied within experimental and theoretical error estimates. Having tested this sum rule for the low-lying bottomonium states, it may be used as a tool to investigate the nature of exotic states in the charmonium and bottomonium spectrum through the corresponding radiative transitions.

The rescattering effects between pions in the S and D-waves are taken into account through the Muskhelishvili-Omnès formalism. Since the physical region of the $ππ$ invariant mass extends above 1 GeV, the important $K\bar{K}$ intermediate state in the S-wave is implemented through coupled-channel unitarity. For the left-hand cuts, we account for the well established charged exotic state $Z_c(3900)$ in $t$- and $u$-channels, while the other contributions are absorbed in the subtraction constants. For the $e^+ e^- \to J/ψ\, K \bar{K}$ we provide the prediction of the two-kaon invariant mass distribution. For the $s$-wave, we use a coupled-channel $ππ,\, K\bar{K}$ analysis which allows a simultaneous description of both $f_0(500)$ and $f_{0}(980)$ resonances. For higher energies, $f_2(1270)$ shows up as a dominant structure which we approximate by a single channel $ππ$ rescattering in the $d$-wave. In the dispersive approach, the latter requires taking into account $t$- and $u$-channel vector-meson exchange left-hand cuts which exhibit an anomalous-like behavior for large space-like virtualities. In our paper, we show how to readily incorporate such behavior using a contour deformation. Besides, we devote special attention to kinematic constraints of helicity amplitudes and show their correlations explicitly.

In this work, we use the dispersion theory to provide a physical description of recent BESIII data on the reaction $ e^+ e^- \to ψ(2S) \, π^+ \, π^-$. Taking into account explicitly the effects of charged exotic intermediate states in the $t$- and $u$-channels as well as the two-pion final state interaction, we describe the invariant mass distribution for four different $e^+ e^-$ center-of-mass energies. The effects of the $ππ$ rescattering are accounted for within a model-independent single channel approach which is found to explain the $ππ$-invariant mass distributions at all $e^+ e^-$ center-of-mass energies. For $q= 4.226$ GeV and $q= 4.258$ GeV the already established charged exotic state $Z_c(3900)$ is considered as the intermediate state, whereas for $q= 4.358$ GeV the rescattering of pions dominates the fits. For the highest energy, $q= 4.416$ GeV, a heavier charged exotic state with mass $m_{Z_c} = 4.016(4)$ GeV and width $Γ_{Z_c} = 52(10)$ MeV is essential to describe the experimental data. Although the mass of this state is consistent with the established $Z_c(4020)$, its width is significantly larger.

We confirm a previous finding that the $η, η^\prime$ and helicity-2 $f_2(1270)$ contributions saturate one of these sum rules up to photon virtualities around 1 GeV$^2$. At larger virtualities, our sum rule analysis shows an important contribution of the $f_2(1565)$ meson and provides a first empirical extraction of its helicity-2 transition form factor. Two further sum rules allow us to predict the helicity-0 and helicity-1 transition form factors of the $f_2(1270)$ meson. Furthermore, our analysis also provides an update for the scalar and tensor meson hadronic light-by-light contributions to the muon's anomalous magnetic moment.

Abstract:
It appears that there are two resonances with $J^P= 1/2^-$ quantum numbers in the energy region near the $Λ(1405)$ hyperon. The nature of these states is a topic of current debate. To provide further insight we use Regge phenomenology to access how these two resonances fit the established hyperon spectrum. We find that only one of these resonances is compatible with a three-quark state.

Suitable event candidates for the double-Regge exchange high-energy limit were selected employing \textit{Van Hove} plots as a better alternative to kinematical cuts in the $K^+ K^- p$ Dalitz plot. In this way we predict and analyze the double-Regge contribution to the $K^+ K^- p$ Dalitz plot, which constitutes one of the major backgrounds in the search for strangeonia, hybrids and exotics using $γp\rightarrow K^+K^-p$ reaction. We expect that data currently under analysis, and that to come in the future, will allow verification of the double-Regge behavior and a better assessment of this component of the amplitude.

At present our chiral Lagrangian contains 5 unknown parameters that are relevant for the photon fusion reactions. These parameters are fitted to photon fusion data $γγ\rightarrow π^0π^0$, $π^+π^-, π^0η$ and to the decay $η\rightarrowπ^0γγ$. In order to derive gauge invariant reaction amplitudes in the resonance region constraints from micro-causality and exact coupled-channel unitarity are used. A theoretical study of Goldstone boson scattering based on the chiral Lagrangian with vector meson fields is presented. In application of a recently developed novel approach we extrapolate subthreshold partial-wave amplitudes into the physical region. The constraints set by micro-causality and coupled-channel unitarity are kept rigourously. It is shown that already the leading order subthreshold amplitudes lead to s- and p-wave $ππ$ and $πK$ phase shifts are in agreement with the experimental data up to about 1.2 GeV.

We present a study of Goldstone boson scattering based on the flavor SU(3) chiral Lagrangian formulated with vector mesons in the tensor field representation. A coupled-channel channel computation is confronted with the empirical s- and p-wave phase shifts, where good agreement with the data set is obtained up to about 1.2 GeV. There are two relevant free parameters only, the chiral limit value of the pion decay constant and the coupling constant characterizing the decay of the rho meson into a pair of pions. We apply a recently suggested approach that implements constraints from micro- causality and coupled-channel unitarity. Generalized potentials are obtained from the chiral Lagrangian and are expanded in terms of suitably constructed conformal variables. The partial-wave scattering amplitudes are defined as solutions of non-linear integral equations that are solved by means of an N/D ansatz.

Dynamics of hadro-quarkonium system is formulated, based on the channel coupling of a light hadron (h) and heavy quarkonium (Q\bar{Q}) to intermediate open-flavor heavy-light mesons (Q\bar{q}, \bar{Q}q). The resulting effective interaction is defined by overlap integrals of meson wavefunctions and (hq\bar q) coupling, where h is pi, rho, omega, phi, without fitting parameters. Equations for hadro-quarkonium amplitudes and resonance positions are written explicitly, and numerically calculated for the special case of pi Upsilon(nS) (n=1,2,3). It is also shown, that the recently observed by Belle two peaks Z_b(10610) and Z_b(10650) are in agreement with the proposed theory. It is demonstrated, that theory predicts peaks at the BB*, B*B* thresholds in all available pi Upsilon(nS) channels. Analytic nature of these peaks is investigated, and shown to be due to a common multichannel resonance poles close to the BB*, B*B* thresholds. The general mechanism of these hadro-quarkonium resonances does not assume any molecular or four-quark (tetraquark) dynamics.

We present a pedagogical case study how to combine micro-causality and unitarity based on a perturbative approach. The method we advocate constructs an analytic extrapolation of partial-wave scattering amplitudes that is constrained by the unitarity condition. Suitably constructed conformal map**s help to arrive at a systematic approximation of the scattering amplitude. The technique is illustrated at hand of a Yukawa interaction. The typical case of a superposition of strong short-range and weak long-range forces is investigated.

For unobserved excited states we predict $M(Υ(2S))-M(η_b(2S))=36(2)$ MeV, $M(Υ(3S))-M(η(3S))=28(2)$ MeV, and also $M(B_c^*)=6334(4)$ MeV, $M(B_c(2S))=6868(4)$ MeV, $M(B_c^*(2S))=6905(4)$ MeV. The mass splittings between $D(2^3S_1)-D(2^1S_0)$, $D_s(2^3S_1)-D_s(2^1S_0)$ are predicted to be $\sim 70$ MeV, which are significantly smaller than in several other studies.

A pole analysis is done and the $DD^*$ production cross section is calculated in qualitative agreement with experiment. The sharp peak at the $D_0D^*_0$ threshold and flat background are shown to be due to Breit-Wigner resonance, shifted by channel coupling from the original position of 3954 MeV for the $2^3P_1$, $Q\bar Q$ state. A similar analysis, applied to the $n=2$, $^3P_2$, $^1P_1$, $^3P_0$, allows us to associate the first one with the observed $Z(3930)$ J=2 and explains the destiny of $^3P_0$.

The mechanism of channel coupling via decay products is used to study energy shifts, level mixing as well as the possibility of new near-threshold resonances in $c\bar c, b\bar b$ systems. The Weinberg eigenvalue method is formulated in the multichannel problems, which allows to describe coupled-channel resonances and wave functions in a unitary way, and to predict new states due to channel coupling. Realistic wave functions for all single-channel states and decay matrix elements computed earlier are exploited, and no new fitting parameters are involved. Examples of level shifts, widths and mixings are presented; the dynamical origin of X(3872) and the destiny of the single-channel $2^3P_1(c\bar c)$ state are clarified. As a result a sharp and narrow peak in the state with quantum numbers $J^{PC}=1^{++}$ is found at 3.872 GeV, while the single-channel resonance originally around 3.940 GeV, becomes increasingly broad and disappears with growing coupling to open channels.

The possibility to observe higher "mixed $D$-wave" resonances, $\tildeΥ(n {}^3D_1)$ with $n=3,4,5$ is discussed. In particular, $\tildeΥ(\approx 11120)$, originating from the pure $5 {}^3D_1$ state, can acquire a rather large dielectron width, $\sim 130$ eV, so that this resonance may become manifest in the $e^+e^-$ experiments. On the contrary, the widths of pure $D$-wave states are very small, $Γ_{ee}(n{}^3 D_1) \leq 2$ eV.

On the other hand, the $S-D$ mixing gives rise to an increase by two orders of magnitude of the di-electron widths of the mixed $\tildeΥ(n^3D_1$) resonances ($n=3,4,5$), which originate from pure $D-$wave states. The value $Γ_{ee}(\tildeΥ(3D))=0.095^{+0.028}_{-0.025}$ keV is obtained, being only $\sim 3$ times smaller than the di-electron width of $Υ(10580)$, while $Γ_{ee}(\tildeΥ(5D))\sim 135$ eV appears to be close to $Γ_{ee}(Υ(11020))$ and therefore this resonance may become manifest in the $e^+e^-$ experiments. Arguments are presented why continuum states give small contributions to the wave functions at the origin. We find that the Y(4360) resonance, considered as a pure $3 {}^3D_1$ state, would have very small di-electron width, $Γ_{ee}(Y(4360))=0.060$ keV. On the contrary, for large mixing between the $4 {}^3S_1$ and $3 {}^3D_1$ states with the mixing angle $θ=34.8^\circ$, $Γ_{ee}(ψ(4415))=0.57$ keV coincides with the experimental number, while a second physical resonance, probably Y(4360), has also a rather large $Γ_{ee} (Y(\sim 4400))=0.61$ keV. For the higher resonance Y(4660), considered as a pure $5 {}^3S_1$ state, we predict the di-electron width $Γ_{ee}(Y(4660))=0.70$ keV, but it becomes significantly smaller, namely 0.31 keV, if the mixing angle between the $5 {}^3S_1$ and $4 {}^3D_1$ states $θ=34^\circ$.
