We present a temperature-dependent resonant elastic soft x-ray scattering (REXS) study of the metal-insulator transition in Sr3(Ru1-xMnx)2O7, performed at both Ru and Mn L-edges. Resonant magnetic superstructure reflections, which indicate an incipient instability of the parent compound, are detected below the transition. Based on modelling of the REXS intensity from randomly distributed Mn impurities, we establish the inhomogeneous nature of the metal-insulator transition, with an effective percolation threshold corresponding to an anomalously low x<0.05 Mn substitution.

The $B_{1g}$ ($x^2-y^2$) spectra in Bi-2212 show an anomalous increase of the intensity towards overdo**, indicating that the corresponding energy scale is neither related to the pairing energy nor to the pseudogap, but possibly stems from a symmetry breaking transition at the onset point of superconductivity at $p_{\rm sc2} \simeq 0.27$.

However, single particle spectroscopies on Sr2RuO4, an archetypal non-polar two dimensional oxide, show significant cleavage temperature dependence. We demonstrate that this is not a consequence of the intrinsic characteristics of the surface: lattice parameters and symmetries, step heights, atom positions, or density of states. Instead, we find a marked increase in the density of defects at the mesoscopic scale with increased cleave temperature. The potential generality of these defects to oxide surfaces may have broad consequences to interfacial control and the interpretation of surface sensitive measurements.

For Sr2RuO4, the Fermi surface modifications are more subtle but equally dramatic in the detail: spin-orbit coupling induces a strong momentum dependence, normal to the RuO2 planes, for both orbital and spin character of the low-energy electronic states. These findings have profound implications for the understanding of unconventional superconductivity in Sr2RuO4.

The discovery of quantum oscillations in the normal-state electrical resistivity of YBa2Cu3O6.5 provides the first evidence for the existence of Fermi surface (FS) pockets in an underdoped cuprate. However, the pockets' electron vs. hole character, and the very interpretation in terms of closed FS contours, are the subject of considerable debate. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), with its ability to probe electronic dispersion as well as the FS, is ideally suited to address this issue. Unfortunately, the ARPES study of YBa2C3O7-d (YBCO) has been hampered by the technique's surface sensitivity. Here we show that this stems from the polarity and corresponding self-do** of the YBCO surface. By in-situ deposition of potassium atoms on the cleaved surface, we are able to continuously tune the do** of a single sample from the heavily overdoped to the underdoped regime. This reveals the progressive collapse of the normal-metal-like FS into four disconnected nodal FS arcs, or perhaps into hole but not electron pockets, in underdoped YBCO6.5.

These might provide a measure of the pairing strength and of the coherence of the superfluid, and ultimately reveal the nature of the elusive pairing mechanism in the superconducting cuprates. To this end, a great deal of effort has been devoted to investigating the connection between the superconducting transition temperature Tc and the normal-state pseudogap crossover temperature T*. Here we present a review of a large body of experimental data that suggests a coexisting two-gap scenario, i.e. superconducting gap and pseudogap, over the whole superconducting dome.

Single-particle spectroscopic probes, such as scanning tunneling and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), have provided us with crucial insights into the complex electronic structure of the high-Tc cuprates, in particular for the under and optimally doped regimes where high-quality crystals suitable for surface-sensitive experiments are available. Conversely, the elementary excitations on the heavily overdoped side of the phase diagram remain largely unexplored. Important breakthroughs could come from the study of Tl2Ba2CuO6+d (Tl2201), a structurally simple system whose do** level can be tuned from optimal to extreme overdo** by varying the oxygen content. We have grown single crystals of Tl2201, which were then carefully annealed under controlled oxygen partial pressures. Their high quality and homogeneity are demonstrated by narrow rocking curves and superconducting transition widths. These crystals have enabled the first successful ARPES study of both normal and superconducting-state electronic structure in Tl2201, allowing a direct comparison with the Fermi surface from magnetoresistance and the gap from thermal conductivity experiments. This establishes Tl2201 as the first high-Tc cuprate for which a surface-sensitive single-particle spectroscopy and a comparable bulk transport technique have arrived at quantitative agreement on a major feature such as the normal state Fermi surface. The surprising momentum dependence of the ARPES lineshape is also discussed.

Angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopic measurements have been performed on an insulating cuprate Ca_2CuO_2Cl_2. High resolution data taken along the Γto (pi,pi) cut show an additional dispersive feature that merges with the known dispersion of the lowest binding energy feature, which follows the usual strongly renormalized dispersion of ~0.35 eV. This higher energy part reveals a dispersion that is very close to the unrenormalized band predicted by band theory. A transfer of spectral weight from the low energy feature to the high energy feature is observed as the Γpoint is approached. By comparing with theoretical calculations the high energy feature observed here demonstrates that the incoherent portion of the spectral function has significant structure in momentum space due to the presence of various energy scales.

The narrow gap semiconductor FeSi owes its strong paramagnetism to electron-correlation effects. Partial Co substitution for Fe produces a spin-polarized doped semiconductor. The spin-polarization causes suppression of the metallic reflectivity and increased scattering of charge carriers, in contrast to what happens in other magnetic semiconductors, where magnetic order reduces the scattering. The loss of metallicity continues progressively even into the fully polarized state, and entails as much as a 25% reduction in average mean-free path. We attribute the observed effect to a deepening of the potential wells presented by the randomly distributed Co atoms to the majority spin carriers. This mechanism inverts the sequence of steps for dealing with disorder and interactions from that in the classic Al'tshuler Aronov approach - where disorder amplifies the Coulomb interaction between carriers - in that here, the Coulomb interaction leads to spin polarization which in turn amplifies the disorder-induced scattering.

ARPES spectra hold a wealth of information about the many-body interactions in a correlated material. However, the quantitative analysis of ARPES spectra to extract the various coupling parameters in a consistent manner is extremely challenging, even for a model Fermi liquid system. We propose a fitting procedure which allows quantitative access to the intrinsic lineshape, deconvolved of energy and momentum resolution effects, of the correlated 2-dimensional material Sr2RuO4. For the first time in correlated 2-dimensional materials, we find an ARPES linewidth that is narrower than its binding energy, a key property of quasiparticles within Fermi liquid theory. We also find that when the electron-electron scattering component is separated from the electron-phonon and impurity scattering terms it decreases with a functional form compatible with Fermi liquid theory as the Fermi energy is approached. In combination with the previously determined Fermi surface, these results give the first complete picture of a Fermi liquid system via ARPES. Furthermore, we show that the magnitude of the extracted imaginary part of the self-energy is in remarkable agreement with DC transport measurements.

Partial substitution of Sr by Ln (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, and Bi) in Bi_{2}Sr_{1.6}Ln_{0.4}CuO_{6} results in a monotonic decrease of Tc with increasing ionic radius mismatch. By minimizing Sr site disorder at the expense of Ca site disorder, we demonstrate that the Tc of Bi2212 can be increased to 96 K. In certain materials with strong electron correlations a quantum phase transition (QPT) at zero temperature can occur, in the proximity of which a quantum critical state of matter has been anticipated. This possibility has recently attracted much attention because the response of such a state of matter is expected to follow universal patterns defined by the quantum mechanical nature of the fluctuations. Forementioned universality manifests itself through power-law behaviours of the response functions. Candidates are found both in heavy fermion systems and in the cuprate high Tc superconductors. Although there are indications for quantum criticality in the cuprate superconductors, the reality and the physical nature of such a QPT are still under debate. Here we identify a universal behaviour of the phase angle of the frequency dependent conductivity that is characteristic of the quantum critical region. We demonstrate that the experimentally measured phase angle agrees precisely with the exponent of the optical conductivity. This points towards a QPT in the cuprates close to optimal do**, although of an unconventional kind.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is one of the most direct methods of studying the electronic structure of solids. By measuring the kinetic energy and angular distribution of the electrons photoemitted from a sample illuminated with sufficiently high-energy radiation, one can gain information on both the energy and momentum of the electrons propagating inside a material. This is of vital importance in elucidating the connection between electronic, magnetic, and chemical structure of solids, in particular for those complex systems which cannot be appropriately described within the independent-particle picture. The last decade witnessed significant progress in this technique and its applications, thus ushering in a new era in photoelectron spectroscopy; today, ARPES experiments with 2 meV energy resolution and 0.2 degree angular resolution are a reality even for photoemission on solids. In this paper we will review the fundamentals of the technique and present some illustrative experimental results; we will show how ARPES can probe the momentum-dependent electronic structure of solids providing detailed information on band dispersion and Fermi surface, as well as on the strength and nature of those many-body correlations which may profoundly affect the one-electron excitation spectrum and, in turn, determine the macroscopic physical properties.

We present angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) data on Na-doped Ca$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$. We demonstrate that the chemical potential shifts upon do** the system across the insulator to metal transition. The resulting low energy spectra reveal a gap structure which appears to deviate from the canonical $d_{x2-y2} ~ |cos(k_x a)-cos(k_y a)|$ form. To reconcile the measured gap structure with d-wave superconductivity one can understand the data in terms of two gaps, a very small one contributing to the nodal region and a very large one dominating the anti-nodal region. The latter is a result of the electronic structure observed in the undoped antiferromagnetic insulator. Furthermore, the low energy electronic structure of the metallic sample contains a two component structure in the nodal direction, and a change in velocity of the dispersion in the nodal direction at roughly 50 meV. We discuss these results in connection with photoemission data on other cuprate systems.

Unlike for the p-type materials, we only observe weak mass renormalizations near 50-70 meV. This may be indicative of smaller electron-phonon coupling or due to the masking effects of other interactions that make the electron-phonon coupling harder to detect. This latter scenario may suggest limitations of the spectral function analysis in extracting electronic self-energies when some of the interactions are highly momentum dependent.

By performing a photon energy dependent study on Ca_2CuO_2Cl_2 we are able to distinguish between features which are intrinsic and those which are a result of the photoemission matrix elements. We find that the dispersion is independent of photon energy, while an asymmetry in the electron occupation probability across the antiferromagnetic zone boundary is robust to variations in photon energy. Finally, we show that the d-wave-like dispersion which exists in the insulator along the antiferromagnetic zone boundary does not precisely fit the simple d-wave functional form near the nodal direction.

This paper reviews the most recent ARPES results on the cuprate superconductors and their insulating parent and sister compounds, with the purpose of providing an updated summary of the extensive literature in this field. The low energy excitations are discussed with emphasis on some of the most relevant issues, such as the Fermi surface and remnant Fermi surface, the superconducting gap, the pseudogap and d-wave-like dispersion, evidence of electronic inhomogeneity and nano-scale phase separation, the emergence of coherent quasiparticles through the superconducting transition, and many-body effects in the one-particle spectral function due to the interaction of the charge with magnetic and/or lattice degrees of freedom. The first part of the paper introduces photoemission spectroscopy in the context of strongly interacting systems, along with an update on the state-of-the-art instrumentation. The second part provides a brief overview of the scientific issues relevant to the investigation of the low energy electronic structure by ARPES. The rest of the paper is devoted to the review of experimental results from the cuprates and the discussion is organized along conceptual lines: normal-state electronic structure, interlayer interaction, superconducting gap, coherent superconducting peak, pseudogap, electron self energy and collective modes. Within each topic, ARPES data from the various copper oxides are presented.

In Nd2CuO4, we reveal the charge-transfer band (CTB) for the first time. As electrons are doped into the system, this feature's intensity decreases with the concomitant formation of near-E_F spectral weight. At low do**, the Fermi surface is an electron-pocket (with volume ~ x) centered at (pi,0). Further do** leads to the creation of a new hole-like Fermi surface (volume ~ 1+x) centered at (pi,pi). These findings shed light on the Mott gap, its do** evolution, as well as the anomalous transport properties of the n-type cuprates.

Good agreement between our results and the band calculations suggests that the electronic structure of MgB$_2$ is of a conventional nature, thus implying that electron correlations are weak, and may be of little importance to the superconductivity in this system.

This suggests that the higher $T_c$ of the trilayer system should be attributed to parameters that simultaneously enhance phase stiffness and pairing strength.

This advance allows us to investigate the large a-b anisotropy of the in-plane electronic structure including, in particular, a 50% difference in the magnitude of the superconducting gap that scales with the energy position of the hump feature. This anisotropy, likely induced by the presence of the CuO chains, raises serious questions about attempts to quantitatively explain the YBa2Cu3O7-d data from various experiments using models based on a perfectly square lattice.

We investigated the low-energy electronic structure of Sr2RuO4 by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) focusing, in particular, on the controversial issues of the Fermi surface (FS) topology and of the extended van Hove singularity (evHs). A detailed study of temperature and photon energy dependence demonstrates the surface-state nature of the electronic band responsible for the evHs, and may suggest the presence of ferromagnetic correlations at the surface. In addition, we detected a replica of the primary FS that indicates a (sqrt2 x sqrt2) surface reconstruction, as confirmed by LEED. In light of these findings, the FS determined by ARPES is consistent with LDA and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) results, and it provides additional information on the detailed shape of the alpha, beta and gamma sheets. Also, at this stage, because of the strong sensitivity of the cleaved surface, we could not find any robust signature of the crossover from 2D to 3D Fermi liquid behavior in our ARPES measurements for T<130 K.

In the superconducting state, the photoemission peak intensity as a function of do** scales with the superfluid density and the condensation energy. As a function of temperature, the peak intensity shows an abrupt behavior near the superconducting phase transition temperature where phase coherence sets in, rather than near the temperature where the gap opens. This anomalous manifestation of collective effects in single-particle spectroscopy raises important questions concerning the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity.

No appreciable shifts of peaks were found s in the valence state of individual V atoms at the phase transition is very small. A remarkable inflection of this temperature dependence at the phase transition at 34 K indicates that charge ordering is associated with the low temperature phase.

In this way the transverse (TO) phonon frequencies were accurately determined. On the basis of the comparative study of the Bi and Tl based cuprates with different number of CuO2 layers per unit cell, we suggest modifications of the assignment of the main oxygen modes. We compare the LO frequencies in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 and Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 obtained from intrinsic Josephson junction characteristics with our measurements, and explain the discrepancy in LO frequencies obtained by the two different methods.

We report temperature dependent reflectivity and transmission measurements, performed with polarized light in order to probe the anisotropy of the crystals along the b and c axes, and optical conductivity spectra obtained by Kramers-Kronig transformation or direct inversion of the Fresnel formula. Special emphasis is given to the far-infrared phonon spectra. The temperature dependence of the phonon parameters is presented and discussed in relation to the soft mode issue in CuGeO3. For T<Tsp we could detect zone boundary folded modes activated by the spin-Peierls phase transition. Following the temperature dependence of these modes, which shows the second order character of the phase transition, we were able to study the effect of do** on Tsp. Moreover, in transmission experiments we detected a direct singlet-triplet excitation at 44 cm^-1, across the magnetic gap, which is not understandable on the basis of the magnetic excitation spectrum so far assumed for CuGeO3. The optical activity of this excitation and its polarization dependence confirm the existence of a second (optical) magnetic branch, recently suggested on the basis of inelastic neutron scattering data. The anisotropy in the magnetic exchange constants along the b axis, necessary for the optical triplet mode to gain a finite intensity, and the strong effect of Si substitution on the phonon spectra are discussed in relation to the alternative space group P2(1)2(1)2(1), recently proposed for CuGeO3 in the high temperature uniform phase.

We investigate the temperature dependent optical properties of NaV2O5, in the energy range 4meV-4eV. The symmetry of the system is discussed on the basis of infrared phonon spectra. By analyzing the optically allowed phonons at temperatures below and above the phase transition, we conclude that a second-order change to a larger unit cell takes place below 34 K, with a fluctuation regime extending over a broad temperature range. In the high temperature undistorted phase, we find good agreement with the recently proposed centrosymmetric space group Pmmn. On the other hand, the detailed analysis of the electronic excitations detected in the optical conductivity, provides direct evidence for a charge disproportionated electronic ground-state, at least on a locale scale: A consistent interpretation of both structural and optical conductivity data requires an asymmetrical charge distribution on each rung, without any long range order. We show that, because of the locally broken symmetry, spin-flip excitations carry a finite electric dipole moment, which is responsible for the detection of direct two-magnon optical absorption processes for E parallel to the a axis. The charged-magnon model, developed to interpret the optical conductivity of NaV2O5, is described in detail, and its relevance to other strongly correlated electron systems, where the interplay of spin and charge plays a crucial role in determining the low energy electrodynamics, is discussed.

The optical conductivity sigma (omega) of undoped YBa2Cu3O6 is studied in detail in the mid-infrared range. Substitutions on all but the Ba site are used to identify the prominent absorption processes at 2800 and 3800 cm^-1. Experimental evidence for bimagnon-plus-phonon absorption is collected. A more critical analysis of the lineshape and the spectral weight reveals the limits of this approach. Although phonon-2-magnon multiple scattering seems to reproduce the lineshape, the necessary coupling is unrealistically large. The strong increase of high frequency spectral weight with increasing temperature makes the failure of spin-wave theory even more evident.

Abstract:
The Intlerlayer Josephson coupling between the planes of Tl2Ba2CuO6 was determined using infrared spectroscopy and magnetic flux vortex imaging. These methods give a consistent value of $ω_J$= 28 cm$^{-1}$ which, when combined with the condensation energy produces a discrepancy of at least an order of magnitude with deductions based on the interlayer tunneling model.

We review some of the relevant physical properties of the transition metal mono-silicides with the FeSi structure (CrSi, MnSi, FeSi, CoSi, NiSi, etc) and explore the relation between their structural characteristics and the electronic properties. We confirm the suggestion orginally made by Pauling, that the FeSi structure supports two quasi-atomic d-states at the transition metal atom. This shell contains from 0 to 4 electrons in the sequence CrSi to NiSi. In FeSi the two quasi-atomic d-electrons are responsible for the high temperature S=1 state, which is compensated for T=0 by two itinerant electrons associated with the Fe-Si resonance bonds.

The optical conductivity function was obtained via Kramers-Kronig analysis. We observed a dirty metal-like behavior at room temperature and the opening of a gap of 70 meV at low temperature. The results of a group theoretical analysis of the lattice vibrational modes are presented and compared to the experimental data. Of the five optical phonons expected for this material only four have been observed in the far-infrared region.
