Solid-solutions of the "soft" quantum spin ice pyrochlore magnets Tb2B2O7 with B=Ti and Sn display a novel magnetic ground state in the presence of strong B-site disorder, characterized by a low susceptibility and strong spin fluctuations to temperatures below 0.1 K. These materials have been studied using ac-susceptibility and muSR techniques to very low temperatures, and time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering techniques to 1.5 K. Remarkably, neutron spectroscopy of the Tb3+ crystal field levels appropriate to at high B-site mixing (0.5 < x < 1.5 in Tb2Sn2-xTixO7) reveal that the doublet ground and first excited states present as continua in energy, while transitions to singlet excited states at higher energies simply interpolate between those of the end members of the solid solution. The resulting ground state suggests an extreme version of a random-anisotropy magnet, with many local moments and anisotropies, depending on the precise local configuration of the six B sites neighboring each magnetic Tb3+ ion.

We have probed the low temperature magnetic behavior of the ordered spin ice material Tb2Sn2O7 through ac magnetic susceptibility measurements of both the pure material and samples with small percentages of Ti substituted on the Sn sublattice. We observe a clear signature for the previously reported ordering transition at TC = 850 mK, as well as evidence for dynamic freezing at temperatures well below TC, confirming the persistence of significant magnetic fluctuations deep in the spin-ordered regime. The long range ordering transition was completely suppressed with as little as 5% Ti for Sn substitution, and 10% Ti substitution resulted in a spin-glass-like spin freezing transition near 250 mK. The results demonstrate that the long range magnetic ordering is surprisingly fragile in this system.

Abstract:
Neutron scattering and magnetization measurements have been performed on the stuffed pyrochlore system Tb2+xTi2-2xNbxO7. We find that despite the introduction of chemical disorder and increasingly antiferromagnetic interactions, a spin glass transition does not occur for T >= 1.5 K and cooperative paramagnetic behavior exists for all x. For x = 1, Tb3NbO7, an antiferromagnetically ordered state…

For x = 1, Tb3NbO7, an antiferromagnetically ordered state coexisting with cooperative paramagnetic behavior is seen without applying any external fields or pressure, a situation advantageous for studying this cooperative behavior.

We report systematic low temperature measurements of the DC magnetization, AC susceptibility, and heat capacity of dysprosium pyrogermanate (Dy2Ge2O7) single crystal and powder samples. Our results confirm that Dy2Ge2O7 is an anisotropic antiferromagnet. The isothermal field dependent magnetization and the integrated magnetic entropy both indicate that the Dy3+ ions behave as Ising-like spins, analogous to those in the pyrochlore spin ice materials. Both single-spin and collective spin relaxation phenomena appear to lead to spin freezing in this material, again in analogy to observations in the spin ice materials, suggesting that such phenomena may be generic to a broader class of magnetic materials.

Heat capacity measurements indicate that these materials lose the spin ice zero point entropy for x >= 0.3, sharply contrasting with results on the analogous Ho materials. A finite ac susceptibility is observed as T ~ 0 in both the Ho and Dy materials with x = 0.67, which suggests that spin fluctuations persist down to T ~ 0. We propose that both the entropy and susceptibility data may be explained as a result of domains of local pyrochlore type structural order in these materials.

We report the anisotropic magnetic properties of Ho2Ge2O7 determined from dc and ac magnetization, specific heat and powder neutron diffraction experiments. The magnetic lanthanide sublattice, seen in our refinement of the tetragonal pyrogermanate crystal structure, is a right-handed spiral of edge-sharing and corner-sharing triangles; the local Ho-O coordination indicates that the crystal field is anisotropic. Susceptibility and magnetization data indeed show that the magnetism is highly anisotropic, and the magnetic structure has the Ho moments confined to the plane perpendicular to the structural spiral. The ordered moment of Ho3+, as determined from refinement of the neutron diffraction data, is 9.0 mu_B. Magnetic ordering occurs around 1.6 K. Temperature and field dependent ac susceptibility measurements show that this compound displays spin relaxation phenomena analogous to what is seen in the spin ice pyrochlore system Ho2Ti2O7.

We also observe a somewhat reduced zero point entropy in Dy2NbScO7, which is possibly associated with the higher level of cation disorder. The ice-like states in these materials with cation disorder on the B-sites of the pyrochlore lattice provide new evidence for the robust nature of spin ice behavior in the presence of disorder.

Water ice and spin ice are important model systems in which theory can directly account for zero point entropy associated with quenched configurational disorder. Spin ice differs from water ice in the important respect that its fundamental constituents, the spins of the magnetic ions, can be removed through replacement with non-magnetic ions while kee** the lattice structure intact. In order to investigate the interplay of frustrated interactions and quenched disorder, we have performed systematic heat capacity measurements on spin ice materials which have been thus diluted up to 90%. Investigations of both Ho and Dy spin ices reveal that the zero point entropy depends non-monotonically on dilution and approaches the value of Rln2 in the limit of high dilution. The data are in good agreement with a generalization of Pauling's theory for the entropy of ice.

We report a structural and thermodynamic study of the "stuffed spin ice" material Ho2TiO5 (i.e., Ho2(Ti1.33Ho0.67)O6.67), comparing samples synthesized through two different routes. Neutron powder diffraction and electron diffraction reveal that the previously reported defect fluorite phase has short-range pyrochlore ordering, in that there are domains in which the Ho and Ho/Ti sublattices are distinct. By contrast, a sample prepared through a floating zone method has long range ordering of these sublattices. Despite the differences in crystal structures, the two versions of Ho2TiO5 display similar magnetic susceptibilities. Field dependent magnetization and measured recovered entropies, however, show a difference between the two forms, suggesting that the magnetic properties of the stuffed pyrochlores depend on the local structure.

We report the magnetic properties of the ZnLn2S4 (Ln = Er, Tm, Yb) olivines, in which the magnetic lanthanide ions are in a potentially frustrated geometry consisting of sawtooth chains of corner-sharing triangles. Fits to the high temperature magnetic susceptibility yielded Curie-Weiss temperatures of theta ~ -4, -13, and -75 K for the Er, Tm, and Yb compounds respectively. Antiferromagnetic interactions indicated by these negative theta values, along with the absence of magnetic long range order above T = 1.8 K, suggest that geometrical frustration of magnetic ordering exists in these sulfide olivines as has been observed previously in the rare earth chalcogenide spinels.
