To find New Physics or to refine our knowledge of the Standard Model at the LHC is an enterprise that involves many factors. We focus on taking advantage of available information and pour our effort in re-thinking the usual data-driven ABCD method to improve it and to generalize it using Bayesian Machine Learning tools. We propose that a dataset consisting of a signal and many backgrounds is well described through a mixture model. Signal, backgrounds and their relative fractions in the sample can be well extracted by exploiting the prior knowledge and the dependence between the different observables at the event-by-event level with Bayesian tools. We show how, in contrast to the ABCD method, one can take advantage of understanding some properties of the different backgrounds and of having more than two independent observables to measure in each event. In addition, instead of regions defined through hard cuts, the Bayesian framework uses the information of continuous distribution to obtain soft-assignments of the events which are statistically more robust. To compare both methods we use a toy problem inspired by $pp\to hh\to b\bar b b \bar b$, selecting a reduced and simplified number of processes and analysing the flavor of the four jets and the invariant mass of the jet-pairs, modeled with simplified distributions. Taking advantage of all this information, and starting from a combination of biased and agnostic priors, leads us to a very good posterior once we use the Bayesian framework to exploit the data and the mutual information of the observables at the event-by-event level. We show how, in this simplified model, the Bayesian framework outperforms the ABCD method sensitivity in obtaining the signal fraction in scenarios with $1\%$ and $0.5\%$ true signal fractions in the dataset. We also show that the method is robust against the absence of signal.

We study di-Higgs production via gluon fusion at the high luminosity LHC in the presence of new physics, focusing on the $b\bar bγγ$ final states. Taking a minimal set of three scalar leptoquarks (LQs) with cubic and quartic interactions with the Higgs and choosing four benchmark points with a light LQ, we perform a detailed analysis of differential distributions of the di-Higgs production cross section, studying the imprints of the new physics states running in the loops. Simulating the signal and main backgrounds, we study the influence of the new physics in differential distributions such as the invariant mass of the subsystems of final particles, the transverse momentum, and angular variables, finding in particular a resonance peak associated with the light LQ. It turns out that the angular separation of the photons, which is correlated with the resonance LQ peak, is a very sensitive observable that helps in discriminating the new physics signal from the Standard Model background. We find that for two of our benchmarks discovery could be reached with 3 ab$^{-1}$, whereas exclusion limits at 95% C.L. could be claimed with 0.60-0.75 ab$^{-1}$. For the other two benchmarks that have heavier LQ masses significances of order 2$σ$ are possible for 3 ab$^{-1}$. A similar analysis could be applied to other loop-enhanced models.

Several experiments have measured a deviation in $B\to D^{(*)}$ semileptonic decays, that point to new physics at the TeV scale violating lepton flavor universality. A scalar leptoquark $S_1$, with a suitable structure of couplings in flavor space, is known to be able to solve this anomaly modifying $b\to cτ\barν$. In the context of composite Higgs models, we consider a theory containing $H$ and $S_1$ as Nambu-Goldstone bosons (NGBs) of a new strongly interacting sector, with ordinary resonances at a scale ${\cal O}(10)$ TeV. Assuming anarchic partial compositeness of the Standard Model (SM) fermions we calculate the potential of the NGBs that is dominated by the fermions of the third generation, we compute $R_{D^{(*)}}$ and estimate the corrections to flavor observables by the presence of $S_1$. We find that the SM spectrum and $m_{S_1}\sim$ TeV can be obtained with a NGB decay constant of order $\sim 5$ TeV. We obtain a robust correlation between the main corrections to $R_{D^{(*)}}$, $B_{K^{(*)}νν}$ and $g_τ/g_μ$, that leads to a sever bound on $R_{D^{(*)}}$, roughly $2σ$ below the experimental value. Besides the bounds on the flavor observables $g_τ^W$, BR$(τ\toμγ)$ and $Δm_{B_s}$ are saturated, with the first one requiring a coupling between resonances $g_*\lesssim 2$, whereas the second one demands $m_{S_1}\gtrsim 1.7$ TeV, up to corrections of ${\cal O}(1)$.

We study the impact of new physics models in the charge asymmetry defined for LHC final states consisting of two same-sign leptons (2SS$l$, with $l= e, μ$) plus jets ($N_\text{jets}\geq2$), with a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, where the main SM contribution is $t\bar{t}W$ production. Concretely, we consider three different new physics sources for the charge asymmetries: a heavy neutral scalar/pseudoscalar arising from the general two Higgs doublet model, an effective theory with dimension-6 four-quark operators, and a simplified $R$-parity-violating supersymmetric model with electroweakino production (higgsino-like or wino-like). We propose measuring the charge asymmetries differentially with respect to several kinematic observables, and inclusively/exclusively with the number of $b$-tagged jets in the final state ($N_b\geq\{1, 2, 3\}$). Results are compared with the SM prediction using the $χ^2$ criteria, expressing sensitivity in terms of the normal Gaussian significance. We show that some of the proposed new physics scenarios can be probed at the LHC even for the already recorded integrated luminosity of 139 fb$^{-1}$. Finally, we also estimate the prospects for the potential LHC sensitivity to the considered new physics models in its high-luminosity phase.

A natural composite Higgs demands the presence of light resonances at the TeV scale, that in general are in conflict with bounds from flavor and CP violation. We propose a composite model with a Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism, that offers new possibilities for the origin of flavor. We analyse the interplay of partial compositeness and the horizontal U(1) symmetry in achieving the quark masses and mixing angles. We study the contributions to $ΔF=2$ 4-fermion operators, as well as to $ΔF=1$ and neutron dipole operators. We find scenarios in which the contribution to Left-Right and Right-handed operators involving the first and second generations can be suppressed, in particular for a region of parameter space it is possible to simultaneously suppress the mixed-chirality contribution to $K^0-\bar K^0$ mixing by one power of the Cabibbo angle, $λ_C$, and the dipole moments by $λ_C^2$ compared with anarchic partial compositeness, possibly making the resonances accessible at LHC. 4-fermion operators of $B_s$-meson mixing and Left-handed operators are not suppressed.

Since the discovery in 2012 of the Higgs boson at the LHC, as the last missing piece of the Standard Model of particle physics, any hint of new physics has been intensively searched for, with no confirmation to date. There are however slight deviations from the SM that are worth investigating. The CMS collaboration has reported, in a search for heavy resonances decaying in $t \bar t$ with a 13-TeV center-of-mass energy and a luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$, deviations from the SM predictions at the 3.5$σ$ level locally (1.9$σ$ after the look-elsewhere effect). In addition, in the ditau final state search performed by the ATLAS collaboration at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV and $\mathcal{L}=139$ fb$^{-1}$, deviations from the SM at the 2$σ$ level have been also observed. Interestingly, both slight excesses are compatible with a new pseudoscalar boson with a mass around 400 GeV that couples at least to fermions of the third generation and gluons. Starting from a purely phenomenological perspective, we inspect the possibility that a 400-GeV pseudoscalar can account for these deviations and at the same time satisfy the constraints on the rest of the channels that it gives contributions to and that are analyzed by the ATLAS and CMS experiments. After obtaining the range of effective couplings compatible with all experimental measurements, we study the gauge invariant UV completions that can give rise to this type of pseudoscalar resonance, which can be accommodated in an $SO(6)/SO(5)$ model with consistency at the 1$σ$ level and in a $SO(5)\times U(1)_{P}\times U(1)_{X}/SO(4)\times U(1)_X$ at the 2$σ$ level, while exceedingly large quartic couplings would be necessary to account for it in a general two Higgs doublet model.

Measurements of single Higgs production and its decays are in good agreement with the Standard Model. There is still room for large modifications in double Higgs production at LHC, though these effects may be correlated with large corrections to other observables, in particular single Higgs production. In this work we address the issue of enhancing double Higgs production in the presence of scalar leptoquarks while satisfying all experimental constraints. We show at leading order that including more than one species of leptoquarks, large cubic interactions with the Higgs can lead to sizable enhancement of di-Higgs production cross section at LHC, while at the same time kee** other Higgs observables and precision measurements under control. For masses above 800 GeV these corrections are in general below 30%, whereas in a viable scenario in which one of the leptoquarks can be light, specifically in the mass range $400-600$ GeV, we show that it is possible to roughly double the SM cross section for di-Higgs production, implying that possible first hints of it may be probed at the high luminosity LHC at $\mathcal{L}\sim 2$ ab$^{-1}$.

We consider a theory of resonances, as an effective description of a strongly interacting theory, that generates the leptoquarks and the Higgs as Nambu-Goldstone bosons, with the rest of the resonances at a scale of order $10-30\ {\rm TeV}$. We assume anarchic partial compositeness for the flavor of the SM fermions. Under these hypothesis we study whether it is possible to reproduce the deviations in the $B$-decays without being in conflict with flavor and electroweak bounds. We find a tension between $R_{D^{(*)}}^{τ\ell}$ and some flavor observables, dominated by flavor violating $τ$ decays and $Δm_{B_s}$, that require a tuning of order $10-25\%$. We also compute the potential of the scalars showing that leptoquarks with masses ${\cal}O(2-3)\ {\rm TeV}$ can be naturally expected in the model. We discuss briefly the phenomenology of the other resonances.

COVID-19 outbreaks have proven to be very difficult to isolate and extinguish before they spread out. An important reason behind this might be that epidemiological barriers consisting in stop** symptomatic people are likely to fail because of the contagion time before onset, mild cases and/or asymptomatics carriers. Motivated by these special COVID-19 features, we study a scheme for containing an outbreak in a city that consists in adding an extra firewall block between the outbreak and the rest of the city. We implement a coupled compartment model with stochastic noise to simulate a localized outbreak that is partially isolated and analyze its evolution with and without firewall for different plausible model parameters. We explore how further improvements could be achieved if the epidemic evolution would trigger policy changes for the flux and/or lock-down in the different blocks. Our results show that a substantial improvement is obtained by merely adding an extra block between the outbreak and the bulk of the city.

A vector leptoquark at the TeV scale, mostly coupled to the fermions of the third generation, is the preferred option to explain the hints of lepton flavor universality violation in the decays of B-mesons. It seems interesting to assume that this leptoquark belongs to the same beyond the Standard Model sector that solves the hierarchy problem, since the third generation of fermions play the leading role in the instability of the Higgs potential. We present a composite Grand Unified Theory with resonances at the TeV that contains the required vector leptoquark and develops the Higgs as a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson. We show that anarchic partial compositeness of the Standard Model fermions can accommodate the couplings of Left-handed currents required by the B-anomalies, predicting very small couplings to the Right-handed currents without any additional hypothesis. By making use of an effective theory description of the strong dynamics, in terms of weakly coupled resonances, we are able to compute the corrections to B-physics, as well as the one-loop potential for the pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons. The theory has a rich phenomenology and a candidate for dark matter.

The measurements of $R_K^{(*)}$ and $R_{D}^{(*)}$ by BaBar, Belle and the LHCb collaborations could be showing a hint of lepton flavor universality violation that can be accommodated by the presence of suitable leptoquarks at the TeV scale. We consider an effective description, with leptoquarks arising as composite pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons, as well as anarchic partial compositeness of the SM fermions. Considering the $R_K^{(*)}$ anomaly within this framework, we study pair production of $S_3\sim(\bar 3,3)_{1/3}$ at the LHC. We focus on the component $S_3^{1/3}$ of the triplet, which decays predominantly into $tτ$ and $bν$, and study the bounds from existing searches at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV at the LHC. We find that sbottom searches in the $b\bar{b}$+MET final state best explore the region in parameter space preferred by our model and currently exclude $S_3^{1/3}$ masses up to $\sim$1 TeV. Additional searches, considering the $tτ$ and $tμ$ decay modes, are required to probe the full physical parameter space. In this paper we also recast existing studies on direct leptoquark searches in the $tτtτ$ channel and SM $t\bar{t}t\bar{t}$ searches, and obtain the regions in parameter space currently excluded. Practically the whole physical parameter space is currently excluded for masses up to $\sim$0.8 TeV, which could be extended up to $\sim$1 TeV with the full Run 3 dataset. We conclude that pair production searches for this leptoquark can benefit from considering the final state $t τb$ +MET, where the largest branching ratio is expected. We appraise that future explorations of leptoquarks explaining the B-anomalies with masses beyond the TeV should also consider single and non-resonant production in order to extend the mass reach.

We propose a direct measurement of the CKM element $V_{td}$ at the LHC. Taking profit of the imbalance between $d$ and $\bar d$ quark content in the proton, we show that a non-zero $V_{td}$ induces a charge asymmetry in the $tW$ associated production. The main backgrounds to this process, $t\bar t$ production, and $tW$ associated production mediated by $V_{tb}$, give charge symmetric contributions at leading order in QCD. Therefore, using specific kinematic features of the signal, we construct a charge asymmetry in the di-lepton final state which, due also to a reduction of systematic uncertainties in the asymmetry, is potentially sensitive to $V_{td}$ suppressed effects. In particular, using signal and background simulations up to detector level, we show that this new observable could improve the current direct upper bound on $|V_{td}|$ already with existing LHC data. We also project that $|V_{td}|$ values down to $\sim 10$ times the Standard Model prediction could be probed in the high luminosity phase of the LHC.

Composite Higgs models with anarchic partial compositeness require a scale of new physics ${\cal O}(10-100)$ TeV, with the bounds being dominated by the dipole moments and $ε_K$. The presence of anarchic bilinear interactions can change this picture. We show a solution to the SM flavor puzzle where the electron and the Right-handed quarks of the first generation have negligible linear interactions, and the bilinear interactions account for most of their masses, whereas the other chiral fermions follow a similar pattern to anarchic partial compositeness. We compute the bounds from flavor and CP violation and show that neutron and electron dipole moments, as well as $ε_K$ and $μ\to eγ$, are compatible with a new physics scale below the TeV. $ΔF=2$ operators involving Left-handed quarks and $ΔF=1$ operators with $d_L$ give the most stringent bounds in this scenario. Their Wilson coefficients have the same origin as in anarchic partial compositeness, requiring the masses of the new states to be larger than ${\cal O}(6-7)$ TeV.

We show a symmetry that, in the context of a composite Higgs with anarchic flavor, can suppress the dominant CP violating contributions to $K-\bar K$ mixing. Based on previous extensions of SU(3)$_c$, we consider the case in which the composite sector has a global SU(6) symmetry, spontaneously broken to a subgroup containing SU(3)$\times$SU(3). We show that the interactions with the Standard Model can spontaneously break the remaining symmetry to the diagonal subgroup, identified with the group of color interactions, and naturally suppress $ε_K$. We consider this scenario in the context of the Minimal Composite Higgs Model based on SO(5)/SO(4) for the electroweak sector. By working in the framework of 2-site models, we compute the scalar potential, determine the conditions for a successful breaking of the symmetries and calculate the spectrum of lightest states. We find that $ε_K$ can be suppressed and the top mass reproduced for a large region of the parameter space where the symmetries are dynamically broken. Besides other new resonances, the model predicts the presence of a new singlet scalar state, generally lighter than the Higgs, that could have evaded detection at colliders.

We present an effective description of a spin two massive state and a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson Higgs in a two site model. Using this framework we model the spin two state as a massive graviton and we study its phenomenology at the LHC. We find that a reduced set of parameters can describe the most important features of this scenario. We address the question of which channel is the most sensitive to detect this graviton. Instead of designing search strategies to estimate the significance in each channel, we compare the ratio of our theoretical predictions to the limits set by available experimental searches for all the decay channels and as a function of the free parameters in the model. We discuss the phenomenological details contained in the outcome of this simple procedure. The results indicate that, for the studied masses between 0.5 and 3 TeV, the channels to look for such a graviton resonance are mainly $ZZ$, $WW$ and $γγ$. This is the case even though top and bottom quarks dominate the branching ratios, since their experimental sensitivity is not as good as the one of the electro-weak gauge bosons. We find that as the graviton mass increases, the $ZZ$ and $WW$ channels become more important because of its relatively better enhancement over background, mainly due to fat jet techniques. We determine the region of the parameter space that has already been excluded and the reach for the LHC next stages. We also estimate the size of the loop-induced contributions to the production and decay of the graviton, and show in which region of the parameter space their effects are relevant for our analysis.

We study the diphoton excess at 750 GeV reported by ATLAS and CMS, by assuming that it corresponds to a new spin-two resonant state. We model this state as a massive graviton in a two-site model. We show that the very stringent bounds from $VV$ final states can be evaded naturally by considering that the Higgs is a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson. In this case the couplings of the graviton to the longitudinal electroweak gauge bosons can be parametrically suppressed. On the other hand, partial compositeness allows to suppress the leptonic channels. We compute loop-induced contributions to the graviton couplings by the presence of the SM third generation of quarks and composite partners of the SM fermions and obtain that they are not important. We find that the diphoton signal and the experimental constraints from other decay channels can be reproduced in a large and natural region of the parameter space of the theory.

We consider one of the most significant deviations from the Standard Model: the forward-backward asymmetry of the b-quark measured at leptonic colliders. We investigate the possibility to solve this discrepancy by introducing new physics at the TeV scale. We focus on models where the Higgs is a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson of a new strongly coupled sector with a global SO(5) symmetry broken spontaneously to SO(4). Besides the usual top partners, we introduce bottom partners in the representations 16 and 4 of SO(5) and show that they can improve significantly the fit by correcting the Zbb couplings. We also estimate the corrections to the couplings at one-loop and obtain that the tree-level ones dominate and can give a reliable estimation. We find that the large shift required for Zb_Rb_R leads to light custodians associated to the b-quark, similar to the top partners, as well as a rich phenomenology involving neutral interactions in the bottom-sector.

We consider composite Higgs models where the Higgs is a pseudo-Nambu Goldstone boson arising from the spontaneous breaking of an approximate global symmetry by some underlying strong dynamics. We focus on the SO(5) -> SO(4) symmetry breaking pattern, assuming the partial compositeness paradigm. We study the consequences on Higgs physics of the fermionic representations produced by the strong dynamics, that mix with the Standard Model (SM) degrees of freedom. We consider models based on the lowest-dimensional representations of SO(5) that allow for the custodial protection of the Z -> b b coupling, i.e. the 5, 10 and 14. We find a generic suppression of the gluon fusion process, while the Higgs branching fractions can be enhanced or suppressed compared to the SM. Interestingly, a precise measurement of the Higgs boson couplings can distinguish between different realizations in the fermionic sector, thus providing crucial information about the nature of the UV dynamics.

We study single production and detection at the LHC run II of exotic partners of the bottom quark. For masses larger than 1 TeV single production can dominate over pair production that is suppressed due to phase space. The presence of exotic partners of the bottom is motivated in models aiming to solve the $A_{FB}^b$ anomaly measured at LEP and SLC. Minimal models of this type with partial compositeness predict, as the lightest bottom partner, a new fermion V of electric charge -4/3, also called mirror. The relevant coupling for our study is a WVb vertex, which yields a signal that corresponds to a hard W, a hard b-jet and a forward light jet. We design a search strategy for the leptonic decay of the W, which avoids the large QCD multijet background and its large uncertainties. We find that the main backgrounds are W+jets and ttbar, and the key variables to enhance the signal over them are a hard b-jet and the rapidity of the light jet. We determine the discovery reach for the LHC run II, in particular we predict that, for couplings of order ~g/10, this signal could be detected at a 95% confidence level with a mass up to 2.4 TeV using the first 100 fb-1.

We present a class of warped extra dimension (composite Higgs) models which conjointly accommodates the t\bar t forward-backward asymmetry observed at the Tevatron and the direct CP asymmetry in singly Cabibbo suppressed D decays first reported by the LHCb collaboration. We argue that both asymmetries, if arising dominantly from new physics beyond the Standard Model, hint for a flavor paradigm within partial compositeness models in which the right-handed quarks of the first two generations are not elementary fields but rather composite objects. We show that this class of models is consistent with current data on flavor and CP violating physics, electroweak precision observables, dijet and top pair resonance searches at hadron colliders. These models have several predictions which will be tested in forthcoming experiments. The CP asymmetry in D decays is induced through an effective operator of the form (\bar u c)_{V+A}(\bar s s)_{V+A} at the charm scale, which implies a larger CP asymmetry in the D^0\to K^+K^- rate relative the D^0\to π^+π^- channel. This prediction is distinctive from other Standard Model or dipole-based new physics interpretation of the LHCb result. CP violation in D-\bar D mixing as well as an an excess of dijet production of the LHC are also predicted to be observed in a near future. A large top asymmetry originates from the exchange of an axial resonance which dominantly produces left-handed top pairs. As a result a negative contribution to the lepton-based forward-backward asymmetry in t\bar t production, as well as O(10%) forward-backward asymmetry in b\bar b production above m_{b\bar b}\simeq 600GeV at the Tevatron is expected.

We present a phenomenological analysis of the recent Tevatron results on the $t \bar t$ forward-backward asymmetry and invariant-mass spectrum assuming a new contribution from an s-channel gluon resonance with a mass in the range from 700 to 2500 GeV. In contrast to most of the previous works, this analysis shows that for masses below ~1 TeV resonant New Physics could accommodate the experimental data. In general, we find that axial-like couplings are preferred for light and top quark couplings, and that only top quark couples strongly to New Physics. We find that composite model scenarios arise naturally from only phenomenological analyses of the experimental results. We show that our results are compatible with recent LHC limits in dijet and $t \bar t$ production, and find some tension for large resonance mass ~2.5 TeV. We indicate as best observables for discriminating a relatively light new gluon a better resolution in CDF forward-backward asymmetry, as well as the $t \bar t$ charge asymmetry and invariant-mass spectrum at the LHC.

We build a two sector model which can be thought as an effective low energy description of 5D warped models and choose the quantum numbers of the fermionic resonances to protect the Z-couplings of the partially composite Standard Model light quarks. We analyze the cross section, forward-backward asymmetry and invariant mass distribution of the top anti-top production at Tevatron, as well as the bottom forward-backward asymmetry and the Z-branching fraction into b-quarks at LEP and SLC, for the two sector model. In the region of the parameter space that naturally leads to the Standard Model spectrum and solves the bottom anomaly, the model improves the top forward-backward asymmetry, giving a prediction of up to 10%, and predicts a small decrease of the $t \bar t$ cross section. It also predicts non-universal corrections of the Z-couplings to the light quarks of order 0.001.

The Standard Model with a light Higgs provides a very accurate description of the electroweak precision observables. The largest deviation between the Standard Model predictions and the experimental measurements, the forward-backward asymmetry of the bottom quark A{FB}^b, can be interpreted as an indication of new physics at the TeV scale. The strong agreement between theory and experiment in the branching fraction of the Z into b-quarks puts strong constraints for new physics aiming to solve the A{FB}^b puzzle. We study a class of natural composite Higgs models that can solve the A{FB}^b anomaly reproducing the observed Rb as well as the top and bottom masses. We find that the subgroup of the custodial symmetry able to protect Zb_L anti-b_L from large corrections generated by the top sector play an important role if we want to maintain naturalness in the composite sector. We make a thorough study of the composite operators mixing with the b-quark, determine their embedding under the global composite symmetry and the parameter space that lead to the correct Zb anti-b couplings while kee** the top and bottom masses to their physical values. We study the predictions for the spectrum of light fermionic resonances and the corrections to Zt anti-t couplings in this scenario.

In extensions of the standard model with a heavy fourth generation one important question is what makes the fourth-generation lepton sector, particularly the neutrinos, so different from the lighter three generations. We study this question in the context of models of electroweak symmetry breaking in warped extra dimensions, where the flavor hierarchy is generated by the localization of the zero-mode fermions in the extra dimension. In this setup the Higgs sector is localized near the infrared brane, whereas the Majorana mass term is localized at the ultraviolet brane. As a result, light neutrinos are almost entirely Majorana particles, whereas the fourth generation neutrino is mostly a Dirac fermion. We show that it is possible to obtain heavy fourth-generation leptons in regions of parameter space where the light neutrino masses and mixings are compatible with observation. We study the impact of these bounds, as well as the ones from lepton flavor violation, on the phenomenology of these models.

We analyze in detail the leptonic sector of the recently proposed Lee-Wick Standard Model, which provides a well motivated framework to study acausal effects. We find that, assuming Minimal Flavor Violation, the Lee-Wick partners of the electron, {\tilde l}^e and \tilde e, can produce measurable wrong vertices at the LHC, the most promising channel being q \bar{q} --> \bar{\tilde l}^e {\tilde l}^e --> e^+ e^- jjjj. A Monte-Carlo simulation using MadGraph/MadEvent suggests that for M_l < 450 GeV the measurement of these acausal vertex displacements should be accessible in the LHC era.

We study extensions of the standard model with a strongly coupled fourth generation. This occurs in models where electroweak symmetry breaking is triggered by the condensation of at least some of the fourth-generation fermions. With focus on the phenomenology at the LHC, we study the pair production of fourth-generation down quarks, D4. We consider the typical masses that could be associated with a strongly coupled fermion sector, in the range (300--600) GeV. We show that the production and successive decay of these heavy quarks into final states with same-sign dileptons, trileptons and four leptons, can be easily seen above background with relatively low luminosity. On the other hand, in order to confirm the presence of a new strong interaction responsible for fourth-generation condensation, we study its contribution to D4 pair-production, and the potential to separate it from standard QCD-induced heavy quark production. We show that this separation might require large amounts of data. This is true even if it is assumed that the new interaction is mediated by a massive colored vector boson, since its strong coupling to the fourth generation renders its width of the order of its mass. We conclude that, although this class of models can be falsified at early stages of the LHC running, its confirmation would require high integrated luminosities.

We discuss the renormalization of S, as well as the implications for bounds from electroweak precision measurements on these models. We argue that, although in principle the choice of renormalization condition could eliminate the S parameter constraint, a more consistent condition would still result in a large and positive S. On the other hand, we show that the dependence on the Higgs mass in S can be entirely eliminated by the renormalization procedure, making it impossible in these theories to extract a Higgs mass bound from electroweak precision constraints.

We consider a model with four generations of standard model fermions propagating in an extra dimension with an AdS background metric. We show that if the zero modes of the fourth generation are highly localized towards the infrared brane, it is possible to break the electroweak symmetry via their condensation, partly driven by their interactions with the Kaluza-Klein excitations of the gauge bosons, as well as by the presence of bulk higher-dimensional operators. This dynamical mechanism results in a composite Higgs, which is highly localized and generally heavy. The localization of fermions in the five-dimensional bulk naturally leads to the standard model Yukawa couplings via the action of the bulk higher-dimensional operators, which are suppressed by the Planck scale. We obtain the spectrum of the model and explore some of its phenomenological consequences, both for electroweak precision constraints as well as at the Large Hadron Collider.
