The only anticipated resonant contributions to $B^+\to D^+D^-K^+$ decays are charmonium states in the $D^+D^-$ channel. A model-independent analysis, using LHCb proton-proton collision data taken at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}=7,8,$ and $13$ TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$, is carried out to test this hypothesis. The description of the data assuming that resonances only manifest in decays to the $D^+D^-$ pair is shown to be incomplete. This constitutes evidence for a new contribution to the decay, potentially one or more new charm-strange resonances in the $D^-K^+$ channel with masses around 2.9 GeV$/c^2$.

It can, however, also disintegrate into a $π^-$ meson and a $Λ_c^+$ baryon via $s$ quark decay or via $cs\to d c$ weak scattering. The interplay between the latter two processes governs the size of the branching fraction ${\cal{B}}$$(Ξ_c^0\to π^-Λ_c^+)$, first measured here to be $(0.55\pm 0.02 \pm 0.18)$%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and second systematic. This result is compatible with the larger of the theoretical predictions that connect models of hyperon decays using partially conserved axial currents and SU(3) symmetry with those involving the heavy-quark expansion and heavy-quark symmetry. In addition, the branching fraction of the normalization channel, ${\cal{B}}(Ξ_c^+\to p K^- π^+) = (1.135 \pm 0.002 \pm 0.387)$% is measured.

Production cross-sections for different pairs of charm hadrons are measured and kinematic correlations between the two charm hadrons are investigated. This is the first measurement of associated production of two charm hadrons in proton-lead collisions. The results confirm the predicted enhancement of double parton scattering production in proton-lead collisions compared to the single parton scattering production.

The first observation of the decay $B^0 \rightarrow D^0 \overline{D}{}^0 K^+ π^-$ is reported using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment in 2011, 2012 and 2016. The measurement is performed in the full kinematically allowed range of the decay outside of the $D^{*-}$ region. The ratio of the branching fraction relative to that of the control channel $B^0 \rightarrow D^{*-} D^0 K^+$ is measured to be $\mathcal{R} = (14.2 \pm 1.1 \pm 1.0)\%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The absolute branching fraction of $B^0 \rightarrow D^0 \overline{D}{}^0 K^+ π^-$ decays is thus determined to be $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \rightarrow D^0 \overline{D}{}^0 K^+ π^-) = (3.50 \pm 0.27 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.30) \times 10^{-4}$, where the third uncertainty is due to the branching fraction of the control channel. This decay mode is expected to provide insights to spectroscopy and the charm-loop contributions in rare semileptonic decays.

Searches are performed for a low-mass dimuon resonance, $X$, produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.1 fb$^{-1}$ and collected with the LHCb detector. The $X$ bosons can either decay promptly or displaced from the proton-proton collision, where in both cases the requirements placed on the event and the assumptions made about the production mechanisms are kept as minimal as possible. The searches for promptly decaying $X$ bosons explore the mass range from near the dimuon threshold up to 60 GeV, with nonnegligible $X$ widths considered above 20 GeV. The searches for displaced $X \to μ^+μ^-$ decays consider masses up to 3 GeV. None of the searches finds evidence for a signal and 90% confidence-level exclusion limits are placed on the $X \to μ^+μ^-$ cross sections, each with minimal model dependence. In addition, these results are used to place world-leading constraints on GeV-scale bosons in the two-Higgs-doublet and hidden-valley scenarios.

Flowing electrode capacitive deionization systems (FE-CDI) have recently garnered attention because of their ability to prevent cross contamination and operate in uninterrupted cycles ad infinitum. Typically, FE-CDI electrodes suffer from low conductivity, reducing deionization performance. Utilization of higher mass loadings to combat this leads to poor rheological properties. Herein, Ti$_3$C$_2$T$_x$ MXene was introduced as 1 mg/mL slurry electrodes in an FE-CDI system for the removal and recovery of ammonia from simulated agricultural wastewater. The electrode performance was evaluated by operating the FE-CDI system with a feed solution of 500 mg/L NH$_4$Cl running in batch mode at a constant voltage of 1.20 V and -1.20 V in charging and discharging modes, respectively. Despite the low loading, Ti$_3$C$_2$T$_x$ flowing electrodes showed markedly improved performance, achieving 60% ion removal efficiency in a saturation time of 115 minutes with an adsorption capacity of 460 mg/g. To understand the high adsorption performance of the electrodes, physiochemical and structural analysis was done via a variety of characterization techniques such as SEM, TEM, XRD, DLS, and Raman Spectroscopy. Cyclic Voltammetry and Galvanostatic charge/discharge profiles were obtained to evaluate the electrochemical properties of the electrodes. The system proved to be an energy-saving technology by exhibiting a charge efficiency of 58-70% while operating at an energy consumption of 0.45 kWh/kg. A 92% regeneration efficiency showed that the electrodes were stable and suitable for long term and scalable usage. The results demonstrate that MXenes have the potential to improve the FE-CDI process for energy-efficient removal and recovery of ammonia.

The decays $B^+\rightarrow J/ψπ^+ π^- K^+$ are studied using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9fb$^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions between 2011 and 2018. Precise measurements of the ratios of branching fractions with the intermediate $ψ_2(3823)$, $χ_{c1}(3872)$ and $ψ(2S)$ states are reported. The decay of $B^+\rightarrow ψ_2(3823)K^+$ with $ψ_2(3823)\rightarrow Jψπ^+π^-$ is observed for the first time with a significance of 5.1 standard deviations. The mass differences between the $ψ_2(3823)$, $χ_{c1}(3872)$ and $ψ(2S)$ states are measured to be $$ \begin{array}{rcl} m_{χ_{c1(3872)}} - m_{ψ_2(3823)} &= & 47.50 \pm 0.53 \pm 0.13\,\mathrm{MeV/}c^2\,, \\ m_{ψ_2(3823)} - m_{ψ(2S)} &= & 137.98 \pm 0.53 \pm 0.14\,\mathrm{MeV/}c^2\,, \\ m_{χ_{c1}(3872)} - m_{ψ(2S)} &= & 185.49 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.03\,\mathrm{MeV/}c^2\,, \end{array} $$ resulting in the most precise determination of the $χ_{c1}(3782)$ mass. The width of the $ψ_2(3823)$ state is found to be below 5.2MeV at 90\% confidence level. The Breit-Wigner width of the $χ_{c1}(3872)$ state is measured to be $$ Γ^{\mathrm{BW}}_{χ_{c1}(3872)} = 0.96^{+0.19}_{-0.18}\pm0.21 \mathrm{MeV},$$ which is inconsistent with zero by 5.5 standard deviations.

Describing the {\mbox{lineshape}} with a Breit--Wigner function, the mass splitting between the $χ_{c1}(3872)$ and $ψ(2S)$ states, $Δm$, and the width of the $χ_{c1}(3872)$ state, $Γ_{\mathrm{BW}}$, are determined to be \begin{eqnarray*} Δm & = & 185.598 \pm 0.067 \pm 0.068\, \mathrm{MeV} \,, \\ Γ_{\mathrm{BW}} & = & \phantom{00}1.39\phantom{0} \pm 0.24\phantom{0} \pm 0.10\phantom{0} \mathrm{MeV} \,, \end{eqnarray*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The measured branching-fraction ratios are \[ \begin{eqnarray} \frac{\mathcal{B} (B^+\to D^{*+}D^-K^+)}{\mathcal{B} (B^+\to \kern 0.2em\overline{\kern -0.2em D}{}^0 D^0 K^+)} &=& 0.517 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.013 \pm 0.011 , \\ \frac{\mathcal{B} (B^+\to D^{*-}D^+K^+)}{\mathcal{B} (B^+\to \kern 0.2em\overline{\kern -0.2em D}{}^0 D^0 K^+)} &=& 0.577 \pm 0.016 \pm 0.013 \pm 0.013 , \\ \frac{\mathcal{B} (B^0\to D^{*-}D^0K^+)}{\mathcal{B} (B^0\to D^- D^0 K^+)} &=& 1.754 \pm 0.028 \pm 0.016 \pm 0.035 , \\ \frac{\mathcal{B} (B^+\to D^{*+}D^-K^+)}{\mathcal{B} (B^+\to D^{*-}D^+K^+)} &=& 0.907 \pm 0.033 \pm 0.014 ,\end{eqnarray} \] where the first of the uncertainties is statistical, the second systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainties on the $D$-meson branching fractions. These are the most accurate measurements of these ratios to date.

This paper presents an analysis of the $Λ^0_b\rightarrow J/ψΛ$ angular distribution and the transverse production polarisation of $Λ^0_b$ baryons in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The measurements are performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 fb$^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb experiment. The polarisation is determined in a fiducial region of $Λ^0_b$ transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of $1 < p_{T} < 20$ GeV$/c$ and $2 < η< 5$, respectively. The data are consistent with $Λ^0_b$ baryons being produced unpolarised in this region. The parity-violating asymmetry parameter of the $Λ\rightarrow pπ^-$ decay is also determined from the data and its value is found to be consistent with a recent measurement by the BES\,III collaboration.

We consider skew-products with concave interval fiber maps over a certain subshift obtained as the projection of orbits staying in a given region. It generates a new type of (essentially) coded shift. The fiber maps have expanding and contracting regions which dynamically interact. The dynamics also exhibits pairs of horseshoes of different type of hyperbolicity which, in some cases, are cyclically related.
The space of ergodic measures on the base is an entropy-dense Poulsen simplex. Those measures lift canonically to ergodic measures for the skew-product. We explain when and how the spaces of (fiber) contracting and expanding ergodic measures glue along the nonhyperbolic ones. A key step is the approximation (in the weak$\ast$ topology and in entropy) of nonhyperbolic measures by ergodic ones, obtained only by means of concavity. Concavity is not merely a technical artificial hypothesis, but it prevents the presence of additional independent subsystems. The description of homoclinic relations is also a key instrument.
These skew-products are embedded in non-decreasing entropy one-parameter family of diffeomorphisms stretching from a heterodimensional cycle to a collision of homoclinic classes. Associated bifurcation phenomena involve a jump of the space of ergodic measures and, in some cases, of entropy.

An angular analysis of the $B^{0}\rightarrow K^{*0}(\to K^{+}π^{-})μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decay is presented using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data collected with the LHCb experiment. The full set of $C\!P$-averaged observables are determined in bins of the invariant mass squared of the dimuon system. Contamination from decays with the $K^{+}π^{-}$ system in an S-wave configuration is taken into account. The tension seen between the previous LHCb results and the Standard Model predictions persists with the new data. The precise value of the significance of this tension depends on the choice of theory nuisance parameters.

The $τ$ leptons are selected inclusively, primarily via decays with a single charged particle. The four-momentum of the $τ$ lepton is determined by using $B^+$ mesons from $B_{s2}^{*0} \rightarrow B^+ K^-$ decays. No significant excess is observed, and an upper limit is set on the branching fraction $B(B^+ \rightarrow K^+ μ^- τ^+) < 3.9 \times 10^{-5}$ at 90% confidence level. The obtained limit is comparable to the world-best limit.

The measured values of $|V_{cb}|$ are ${(41.4 \pm 0.6 \pm 0.9 \pm 1.2)\times 10^{-3}}$ and ${(42.3 \pm 0.8 \pm 0.9 \pm 1.2)\times 10^{-3}}$ in the CLN and BGL parametrization, respectively. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third is due to the external inputs used in the measurement. These results are in agreement with those obtained from decays of $B^+$ and $B^0$ mesons. They are the first determinations of $|V_{cb}|$ at a hadron-collider experiment and the first using $B_s^0$ meson decays.

The natural widths of the three lower mass states are consistent with zero, and the 90% confidence-level upper limits are determined to be ${Γ(Ω_b(6316)^-)<2.8}$ MeV, ${Γ(Ω_b(6330)^-)<3.1}$ MeV and ${Γ(Ω_b(6340)^-)<1.5}$ MeV. The natural width of the $Ω_b(6350)^-$ peak is $1.4^{+1.0}_{-0.8}\pm0.1$ MeV, which is 2.5$σ$ from zero and corresponds to an upper limit of 2.8 MeV. The peaks have local significances ranging from 3.6$σ$ to 7.2$σ$. After accounting for the look-elsewhere effect, the significances of the $Ω_b(6316)^-$ and $Ω_b(6330)^-$ peaks are reduced to 2.1$σ$ and 2.6$σ$ respectively, while the two higher mass peaks exceed 5$σ$. The observed peaks are consistent with expectations for excited $Ω_b^-$ resonances.

Since the onset of the `space revolution' of high-precision high-cadence photometry, asteroseismology has been demonstrated as a powerful tool for informing Galactic archaeology investigations. The launch of the NASA TESS mission has enabled seismic-based inferences to go full sky -- providing a clear advantage for large ensemble studies of the different Milky Way components. Here we demonstrate its potential for investigating the Galaxy by carrying out the first asteroseismic ensemble study of red giant stars observed by TESS. We use a sample of 25 stars for which we measure their global asteroseimic observables and estimate their fundamental stellar properties, such as radius, mass, and age. Significant improvements are seen in the uncertainties of our estimates when combining seismic observables from TESS with astrometric measurements from the Gaia mission compared to when the seismology and astrometry are applied separately. Specifically, when combined we show that stellar radii can be determined to a precision of a few percent, masses to 5-10% and ages to the 20% level. This is comparable to the precision typically obtained using end-of-mission Kepler data

We present the first results on isospin amplitudes in $b$-baryon decays, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.5 fb$^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector in $pp$ collisions at center of mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The isospin amplitude ratio $|A_1(Λ_b^0\to J/ψΣ^0)/A_0(Λ_b^0\to J/ψΛ)|$, where the subscript on $A$ indicates the final-state isospin, is measured to be less than 1/21.8 at 95\% confidence level. The Cabibbo suppressed $Ξ_b^0\to J/ψΛ$ decay is observed for the first time, allowing for the measurement $|A_0(Ξ_b^0\to J/ψΛ)/A_{1/2}(Ξ_b^0\to J/ψΞ^0)| =0.37 \pm 0.06\pm 0.02$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

The $D^0$ mesons are required to originate from semileptonic decays of $b$ hadrons, such that the charge of the muon identifies the flavor of the neutral $D$ meson at production. The asymmetries in the effective decay widths of $D^0$ and $\overline{D}^0$ mesons are determined to be $A_Γ(K^+K^-) = ( -4.3 \pm 3.6 \pm 0.5 )\times 10^{-4}$ and $A_Γ(π^+π^-) = ( 2.2 \pm 7.0 \pm 0.8)\times 10^{-4}$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The results are consistent with $CP$ symmetry and, when combined with previous LHCb results, yield $A_Γ(K^+K^-) = ( -4.4 \pm 2.3 \pm 0.6 )\times 10^{-4}$ and $A_Γ(π^+π^-) = ( 2.5 \pm 4.3 \pm 0.7)\times 10^{-4}$.

The fragmentation-fraction ratio $f_\mathrm{s} / f_u$ is observed to depend on the $\mathrm{B}$-meson transverse momentum with a significance of $6.0\,σ$. This dependency is driven by the 13$\text{ TeV}$ sample ($8.7\,σ$) while the results for the other collision energies are not significant when considered separately. Furthermore the results show a $4.8\,σ$ evidence for an increase of $f_\mathrm{s} / f_u$ as a function of collision energy.

Searches are performed for both prompt-like and long-lived dark photons, $A'$, produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. These searches look for $A'\!\to\!μ^+μ^-$ decays using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.5/fb collected with the LHCb detector. Neither search finds evidence for a signal, and 90% confidence-level exclusion limits are placed on the $γ$-$A'$ kinetic-mixing strength. The prompt-like $A'$ search explores the mass region from near the dimuon threshold up to 70 GeV, and places the most stringent constraints to date on dark photons with $214 < m(A') \lesssim 740$ MeV and $10.6 < m(A') \lesssim 30$ GeV. The search for long-lived $A'\!\to\!μ^+μ^-$ decays places world-leading constraints on low-mass dark photons with lifetimes $\mathcal{O}(1)$ ps.

We present a covariant quantum formalism for scalar particles based on an enlarged Hilbert space. The particular physical theory can be introduced through a timeless Wheeler DeWitt-like equation, whose projection onto four-dimensional coordinates leads to the Klein Gordon equation. The standard quantum mechanical product in the enlarged space, which is invariant and positive definite, implies the usual Klein Gordon product when applied to its eigenstates. Moreover, the standard three-dimensional invariant measure emerges naturally from the flat measure in four dimensions when mass eigenstates are considered, allowing a rigorous identification between definite mass history states and the standard Wigner representation. Connections with the free propagator of scalar field theory and localized states are subsequently derived. The formalism also allows the superposition of different theories and remains valid in the presence of a fixed external field, revealing special orthogonality relations. Other details such as extended identities for the current density, the quantization of parameterized theories and the nonrelativistic limit, with its connection to the Page and Wootters formalism, are discussed. A related consistent second quantization formulation is also introduced.

We present MDP Playground, a testbed for Reinforcement Learning (RL) agents with dimensions of hardness that can be controlled independently to challenge agents in different ways and obtain varying degrees of hardness in toy and complex RL environments. We consider and allow control over a wide variety of dimensions, including delayed rewards, sequence lengths, reward density, stochasticity, image representations, irrelevant features, time unit, action range and more. We define a parameterised collection of fast-to-run toy environments in OpenAI Gym by varying these dimensions and propose to use these to understand agents better. We then show how to design experiments using MDP Playground to gain insights on the toy environments. We also provide wrappers that can inject many of these dimensions into any Gym environment. We experiment with these wrappers on Atari and Mujoco to allow for understanding the effects of these dimensions on environments that are more complex than the toy environments. We also compare the effect of the dimensions on the toy and complex environments. Finally, we show how to use MDP Playground to debug agents, to study the interaction of multiple dimensions and describe further use-cases.

Spin-based electronics has evolved into a major field of research that broadly encompasses different classes of materials, magnetic systems, and devices. This review describes recent advances in spintronics that have the potential to impact key areas of information technology and microelectronics. We identify four main axes of research: nonvolatile memories, magnetic sensors, microwave devices, and beyond-CMOS logic. We discuss state-of-the-art developments in these areas as well as opportunities and challenges that will have to be met, both at the device and system level, in order to integrate novel spintronic functionalities and materials in mainstream microelectronic platforms.

To do so, we formulate abstract conditions sufficient for the construction of an ergodic, fully supported measure $μ$ which has positive entropy and is such that for a continuous function $φ\colon X\to\mathbb{R}$ the integral $\intφ\,dμ$ vanishes. The criterion is an extended version of the control at any scale with a long and sparse tail technique coming from the previous works.

Such sets have very rich dynamical properties and play a similar role as semifractals introduced by Lasota and Myjak do for regular IFSs. We study sufficient conditions which guarantee that the closure of the target set is a local attractor for the IFS. As a corollary, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the IFS having a global attractor. We give an example of a non-regular IFS whose target set is nonempty, showing that our approach gives rise to a "new class" of semifractals. Finally, we show that random orbits generated by IFSs draws target sets that are "stable".

We propose a history state formalism for a Dirac particle. By introducing a reference quantum clock system it is first shown that Dirac's equation can be derived by enforcing a timeless Wheeler-DeWitt-like equation for a global state. The Hilbert space of the whole system constitutes a unitary representation of the Lorentz group with respect to a properly defined invariant product, and the proper normalization of global states directly ensures standard Dirac's norm. Moreover, by introducing a second quantum clock, the previous invariant product emerges naturally from a generalized continuity equation. The invariant parameter $τ$ associated with this second clock labels history states for different particles, yielding an observable evolution in the case of an hypothetical superposition of different masses. Analytical expressions for both space-time density and electron-time entanglement are provided for two particular families of electron's states, the former including Pryce localized particles.

We provide examples of transitive partially hyperbolic dynamics (specific but paradigmatic examples of homoclinic classes) which blend different types of hyperbolicity in the one-dimensional center direction. These homoclinic classes have two disjoint parts: an "exposed" piece which is poorly homoclinically related with the rest and a "core" with rich homoclinic relations. There is an associated natural division of the space of ergodic measures which are either supported on the exposed piece or on the core. We describe the topology of these two parts and show that they glue along nonhyperbolic measures.
Measures of maximal entropy are discussed in more detail. We present examples where the measure of maximal entropy is nonhyperbolic. We also present examples where the measure of maximal entropy is unique and nonhyperbolic, however in this case the dynamics is nontransitive.

Alumina-zirconia nano-composites were recently developed as alternative bearing materials for orthopedics. Previous, preliminary reports show that such alumina-zirconia nanocomposites exhibit high crack resistance and low wear rate. In this paper, additional information is given in terms of wear, crack resistance and ageing behaviour: femoral heads are inspected after 7 million cycles of wear testing on a hip simulator, crack resistance is measured and compared to other ceramics used today in orthopedics, slow crack growth is reported under static and cyclic fatigue, and aging resistance is assessed. We also report on the load to failure of femoral heads prototypes during compression tests. This overall reliability assessment ensures a potential future development for these kinds of new nanocomposites in the orthopedic field.

Our method also allows to show how entropy changes across measures with central Lyapunov exponent close to zero. We also prove that any nonhyperbolic ergodic measure is in the intersection of the convex hulls of the measures with positive central exponent and with negative central exponent.

By a theorem of Kirchhoff if the six sphere admits an almost complex structure then the seven sphere is parallelizable, more crucial, he exhibited an explicit global frame constructed out of the given almost complex structure. This result implicitly equips the seven sphere with a definite H-space multiplication. We propose to address the existence problem of complex structures on the six sphere studying the associated parallelism-multiplications on the seven sphere. We ask to what extent the integrability condition of the almost complex structure amounts to the constancy of the structure functions of the global frame defining the parallelism, i.e, if this parallelism comes from a Lie group structure. At a more fundamental level we inquire if the integrability condition of the almost complex structure entails the homotopy associativity of the induced multiplication. A positive answer to these questions would rule out the six sphere of being a complex manifold since the seven sphere is not a Lie group, not even a homotopy associative H-space.

Changes in crystalline phases resulting from low-temperature ageing of different yttria doped and non-doped zirconia-toughened alumina composites and nanocomposites were investigated under controlled humidity and temperature conditions in autoclave. A classical powder mixing processing route and a new modified colloidal processing route were used to process the composites. Different compositions ranging from 2.5 wt.% zirconia in a matrix of alumina to pure zirconia (3Y-TZP) were studied. It was observed that Al2O3+yttria stabilised ZrO2 composites exhibited significant ageing. However, ageing was much slower than traditionally observed for Y-TZP ceramics, due to the presence of the alumina matrix. Ageing was clearly limited for zirconia content beyond 25 wt.%. On the other side of the spectrum, Al2O3+2.5 wt.% ZrO2 initially presented a monoclinic fraction but did not show any ageing degradation. These composites seem to represent the best choice between slow crack growth and ageing resistance.
