PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution.
The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

We introduce the concept of a heterodimensional cycle of hyperbolic ergodic measures and a special type of them that we call rich. Within a partially hyperbolic context, we prove that if two measures are related by a rich heterodimensional cycle, then the entire segment of probability measures linking them lies within the closure of measures supported on periodic orbits. Motivated by the occurrence of robust heterodimensional cycles of hyperbolic basic sets, we study robust rich heterodimensional cycles of measures providing a framework for this phenomenon for diffeomorphisms. In the setting of skew products, we construct an open set of maps having uncountably many measures related by rich heterodimensional cycles.

We study the amount of nonhyperbolicity within a broad class of (nonhyperbolic) partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with a one-dimensional center. For that, we focus on the center Lyapunov exponent and the entropy of its level sets. We show that these entropies vary continuously and can be expressed in terms of restricted variational principles. In this study, no dynamical coherence is required.
Of particular interest is the case where the exponent is zero. To study this level set, we construct a compact set foliated by curves tangent to the central direction. Within this set, the entropy attains the maximal possible (and positive) value. Moreover, finite-time Lyapunov exponents converge uniformly to zero. In this construction, we introduce a mechanism to concatenate center curves.
The class studied consists of those robustly transitive diffeomorphisms that have a pair of blender-horseshoes with different types of hyperbolicity and possess minimal strong stable and unstable foliations. This classes includes flow-type and circle-fibered diffeomorphisms as well as some derived from Anosov diffeomorphisms. It also includes the so-called anomalous examples which are dynamically incoherent.

Context: Traditional one-dimensional (1D) hydrostatic model atmospheres introduce systematic modelling errors into spectroscopic analyses of FGK-type stars. Aims: We present an updated version of the STAGGER-grid of 3D model atmospheres, and explore the accuracy of post-processing methods in preparation for spectral synthesis. Methods: New and old models were (re)computed following an updated workflow, including an updated opacity binning technique. Spectroscopic tests were performed in 3D LTE for a grid of 216 fictitious Fe I lines, spanning a wide range in oscillator strength, excitation potential and central wavelength, and eight model atmospheres that cover the stellar atmospheric parameter range (Teff, log g, [Fe/H]) of FGK-type stars. Using this grid, the impact of vertical and horizontal resolution, and temporal sampling of model atmospheres on spectroscopic diagnostics was tested. Results: We find that downsampling the horizontal mesh from its original size of 240 x 240 grid cells to 80 x 80 cells, i.e. sampling every third grid cell, introduces minimal errors on the equivalent width and normalized line flux across the line and stellar parameter space. Regarding temporal sampling, we find that sampling ten statistically independent snapshots is sufficient to accurately model the shape of spectral line profiles. For equivalent widths, a subsample consisting of only two snapshots is sufficient, introducing an abundance error of less than 0.015 dex. Conclusions: We have computed 32 new model atmospheres and recomputed 116 old model atmospheres present in the original grid. The public release of the STAGGER-grid contains 243 models, excluding models with [Fe/H] = -4.00, and the processed snapshots can be used to improve the accuracy of spectroscopic analyses.

Motivated by a valuation theorem, recently obtained by Rangachev, we study the étale extensions $A\subset B$ of polynomial rings over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, such that the integral closure $\overline{A}$ is a primary $\overline{A}$-submodule of $B$. We prove that in this case $\overline{A}$ has infinite cyclic divisor class group, where the generator is a prime divisor equal to the complement of $\textrm{Spec}(B)$ in $\textrm{Spec}(\overline{A})$. Moreover, this prime divisor coincides with the ramification divisor of the finite extension $A\subset \overline{A}$. In this situation we carry out Wright's geometric approach for two-dimensional non-integral étale extensions. It follows from the work of Miyanishi that $\textrm{Spec}(\overline{A})$ is a smooth affine surface. We show that $\textrm{Spec}(\overline{A})$ is an $\mathbb{A}^{1}$-bundle over $\mathbb{P}^{1}$, more precisely a Danilov-Gizatullin surface of index three. Based on Wright's analysis of which of these affine surfaces can factorize an étale morphism of the complex affine plane and his description of its affine coordinate rings, we prove that under the strong assumption that $\overline{A}$ is always a primary $\overline{A}$-submodule of $B$, any two-dimensional complex étale extension is integral.

Spin waves, known for their ability to propagate without the involvement of moving charges, hold immense promise for on-chip information transfer and processing, offering a path toward post-CMOS computing technologies. This study investigates the potential synergy between propagating Damon-Eshbach spin waves and voltage-controlled magnetization in the pursuit of environmentally sustainable computing solutions. Employing micromagnetic simulations, we assess the feasibility of utilizing spin waves in DE mode in conjunction with localized voltage-induced alterations in surface anisotropy to enable low-energy logic operations. Our findings underscore the critical importance of selecting an optimal excitation frequency and gate width, which significantly influence the efficiency of the phase shift induced in propagating spin waves. Notably, we demonstrate that a realistic phase shift of 2.5$\left[ π\ \text{mrad}\right]$ can be achieved at a Co(5nm)/MgO material system via the VCMA effect. Moreover, by tuning the excitation frequency, Co layer thickness, gate width, and the use of a GdO\textsubscript{x} dielectric, we illustrate the potential to enhance the phase shift by a factor of 200 when compared to MgO dielectrics. This research contributes valuable insights towards develo** next-generation computing technologies with reduced energy consumption.

This paper copes with the COGERSA waste collection process. Up to now, experts have been manually designed the process using a trial and error mechanism. This process is not globally optimized, since it has been progressively and locally built as council demands appear. Planning optimization algorithms usually solve it, but they need a fitness function to evaluate a route planning quality. The drawback is that even experts are not able to propose one in a straightforward way due to the complexity of the process. Hence, the goal of this paper is to build a fitness function though a preference framework, taking advantage of the available expert knowledge and expertise. Several key performance indicators together with preference judgments are carefully established according to the experts for learning a promising fitness function. Particularly, the additivity property of them makes the task be much more affordable, since it allows to work with routes rather than with route plannings. Besides, a feature selection analysis is performed over such indicators, since the experts suspect of a potential existing (but unknown) redundancy among them. The experiment results confirm this hypothesis, since the best $C-$index ($98\%$ against around $94\%$) is reached when 6 or 8 out of 21 indicators are taken. Particularly, truck load seems to be a highly promising key performance indicator, together to the travelled distance along non-main roads. A comparison with other existing approaches shows that the proposed method clearly outperforms them, since the $C-$index goes from $72\%$ or $90\%$ to $98\%$.

Studies often report estimates of the average treatment effect. While the ATE summarizes the effect of a treatment on average, it does not provide any information about the effect of treatment within any individual. A treatment strategy that uses an individual's information to tailor treatment to maximize benefit is known as an optimal dynamic treatment rule. Treatment, however, is typically not limited to a single point in time; consequently, learning an optimal rule for a time-varying treatment may involve not just learning the extent to which the comparative treatments' benefits vary across the characteristics of individuals, but also learning the extent to which the comparative treatments' benefits vary as relevant circumstances evolve within an individual. The goal of this paper is to provide a tutorial for estimating ODTR from longitudinal observational and clinical trial data for applied researchers. We describe an approach that uses a doubly-robust unbiased transformation of the conditional average treatment effect. We then learn a time-varying ODTR for when to increase buprenorphine-naloxone dose to minimize return-to-regular-opioid-use among patients with opioid use disorder. Our analysis highlights the utility of ODTRs in the context of sequential decision making: the learned ODTR outperforms a clinically defined strategy.

Spin wave propagation along a ferrimagnetic strip with out-of-plane magnetization is studied by means of micromagnetic simulations. The ferrimagnetic material is considered as formed by two antiferromagnetically coupled sublattices. Two critical temperatures can be defined for such systems: that of magnetization compensation and that of angular momentum compensation, both different due to distinct Landé factors for each sub-lattice. Spin waves in the strip are excited by a spin current injected at one of its edges. The obtained dispersion diagrams show exchange-dominated forward volume spin waves. For a given excitation frequency, Néel vector describes highly eccentric orbits, the eccentricity depending on temperature, whose semi-major axis are oriented differently at distinct locations on the FiM strip.

A large amount of effort has recently been put into understanding the barren plateau phenomenon. In this perspective article, we face the increasingly loud elephant in the room and ask a question that has been hinted at by many but not explicitly addressed: Can the structure that allows one to avoid barren plateaus also be leveraged to efficiently simulate the loss classically? We present strong evidence that commonly used models with provable absence of barren plateaus are also classically simulable, provided that one can collect some classical data from quantum devices during an initial data acquisition phase. This follows from the observation that barren plateaus result from a curse of dimensionality, and that current approaches for solving them end up encoding the problem into some small, classically simulable, subspaces. Thus, while stressing quantum computers can be essential for collecting data, our analysis sheds serious doubt on the non-classicality of the information processing capabilities of parametrized quantum circuits for barren plateau-free landscapes. We end by discussing caveats in our arguments, the role of smart initializations and the possibility of provably superpolynomial, or simply practical, advantages from running parametrized quantum circuits.

The conventional phase space of classical physics treats space and time differently, and this difference carries over to field theories and quantum mechanics (QM). In this paper, the phase space is enhanced through two main extensions. First, we promote the time choice of the Legendre transform to a dynamical variable. Second, we extend the Poisson brackets of matter fields to a spacetime symmetric form. The ensuing "spacetime phase space" is employed to obtain an explicitly covariant version of Hamilton equations for relativistic field theories. A canonical-like quantization of the formalism is then presented in which the fields satisfy spacetime commutation relations and the foliation is quantum. In this approach, the classical action is also promoted to an operator and retains explicit covariance through its non-separability in the matter-foliation partition. The problem of establishing a correspondence between the new noncausal framework (where fields at different times are independent) and conventional QM is solved through a generalization of spacelike correlators to spacetime. In this generalization, the Hamiltonian is replaced by the action, and conventional particles by off-shell particles. When the foliation is quantized, the previous map is recovered by conditioning on foliation eigenstates, in analogy with the Page and Wootters mechanism. We also provide an interpretation of the correspondence in which the causal structure of a given theory emerges from the quantum correlations between the system and an environment. This idea holds for general quantum systems and allows one to generalize the density matrix to an operator containing the information of correlators both in space and time.

Second harmonic generation (SHG) is forbidden in centrosymmetric molecular materials. However, a signal is frequently observed from interfaces where the symmetry is broken. Whereas the effect can be phenomenologically accommodated, an ab initio qualitative and quantitative description has remained elusive, preventing the exploration of fascinating questions such as how deep below the surface the second harmonic can still be generated. To answer such questions, we present an ab initio multiscale approach to compute the total and layer-dependent intensity of surface SHG from molecular crystals. The microscopic origin of surface SHG is identified in layer-dependent models with embedding partial charges combined with density functional theory. The models show increasing symmetry-breaking distortions of the electron cloud around the molecules as the surface layer is approached. The SHG at the molecular level is determined using time-dependent density functional theory and then brought to the scale of macroscopic films through a rigorous self-consistent multiple scattering formalism capable of predicting the measurable optical intensities of the generated second harmonic signal. We study crystalline molecular films with centrosymmetric unit cells of 7,9-Dibromobenzo[h]quinolin-10-ol. The intensity of the SHG at the surface layer is two orders of magnitude larger than at the next layer below and three orders of magnitude larger than two layers below. Besides providing fundamental understanding, our approach can be used for designing and optimizing optical devices containing nonlinear molecular materials, such as molecular laminates. We show that a relatively basic Kretschmann-like setup can enhance the surface SHG of a crystalline film of centrosymmetric molecular unit cells a thousand times.

Although intrusion alerts can provide threat intelligence regarding attacker strategies, extracting such intelligence via existing tools is expensive and time-consuming. Earlier work has proposed SAGE, which generates attack graphs from intrusion alerts using unsupervised sequential machine learning. This paper proposes a querying and prioritization-enabled visual analytics dashboard for SAGE. The dashboard has three main components: (i) a Graph Explorer that presents a global view of all attacker strategies, (ii) a Timeline Viewer that correlates attacker actions chronologically, and (iii) a Recommender Matrix that highlights prevalent critical alerts via a MITRE ATT&CK-inspired attack stage matrix. We describe the utility of the proposed dashboard using intrusion alerts collected from a distributed multi-stage team-based attack scenario. We evaluate the utility of the dashboard through a user study. Based on the responses of a small set of security practitioners, we find that the dashboard is useful in depicting attacker strategies and attack progression, but can be improved in terms of usability.

Barren plateaus have emerged as a pivotal challenge for variational quantum computing. Our understanding of this phenomenon underwent a transformative shift with the recent introduction of a Lie algebraic theory capable of explaining most sources of barren plateaus. However, this theory requires either initial states or observables that lie in the circuit's Lie algebra. Focusing on parametrized matchgate circuits, in this work we are able to go beyond this assumption and provide an exact formula for the loss function variance that is valid for arbitrary input states and measurements. Our results reveal that new phenomena emerge when the Lie algebra constraint is relaxed. For instance, we find that the variance does not necessarily vanish inversely with the Lie algebra's dimension. Instead, this measure of expressiveness is replaced by a generalized expressiveness quantity: The dimension of the Lie group modules. By characterizing the operators in these modules as products of Majorana operators, we can introduce a precise notion of generalized globality and show that measuring generalized-global operators leads to barren plateaus. Our work also provides operational meaning to the generalized entanglement as we connect it with known fermionic entanglement measures, and show that it satisfies a monogamy relation. Finally, while parameterized matchgate circuits are not efficiently simulable in general, our results suggest that the structure allowing for trainability may also lead to classical simulability.

In the past few decades, researchers have created a veritable zoo of quantum algorithm by drawing inspiration from classical computing, information theory, and even from physical phenomena. Here we present quantum algorithms for parallel-in-time simulations that are inspired by the Page and Wooters formalism. In this framework, and thus in our algorithms, the classical time-variable of quantum mechanics is promoted to the quantum realm by introducing a Hilbert space of "clock" qubits which are then entangled with the "system" qubits. We show that our algorithms can compute temporal properties over $N$ different times of many-body systems by only using $\log(N)$ clock qubits. As such, we achieve an exponential trade-off between time and spatial complexities. In addition, we rigorously prove that the entanglement created between the system qubits and the clock qubits has operational meaning, as it encodes valuable information about the system's dynamics. We also provide a circuit depth estimation of all the protocols, showing an exponential advantage in computation times over traditional sequential in time algorithms. In particular, for the case when the dynamics are determined by the Aubry-Andre model, we present a hybrid method for which our algorithms have a depth that only scales as $\mathcal{O}(\log(N)n)$. As a by product we can relate the previous schemes to the problem of equilibration of an isolated quantum system, thus indicating that our framework enable a new dimension for studying dynamical properties of many-body systems.

This article aims to describe and explain the theoretical foundations of concurrent and set concurrent algorithms, considering an asynchronous shared memory system where any number of processes can crash. Verification of concurrent algorithms is often described in terms of their progress condition, which guarantees that eventually something good will happen, also called the security of the algorithms, and correctness, which guarantees that nothing bad will happen, also called liveliness. of the algorithms. The meaning of correctness of a concurrent algorithm is explained in detail, focusing on linearizability, and a generalization is addressed, concurrency by sets; which is much more recent and less well known. The {\it SetStackLogic} algorithm is shown, which is a set-concurrent algorithm and is also an implementation of a stack with multiplicity. The properties of the algorithm {\it SetStackLogic} are demonstrated in a formal and detailed way, in order to present a rigorous scheme in the formalization of this type of algorithm; same that could be used for other algorithms. Traditional drug discovery programs are being transformed by the advent of machine learning methods. Among these, Generative AI methods (GM) have gained attention due to their ability to design new molecules and enhance specific properties of existing ones. However, current GM methods have limitations, such as low affinity towards the target, unknown ADME/PK properties, or the lack of synthetic tractability. To improve the applicability domain of GM methods, we have developed a workflow based on a variational autoencoder coupled with active learning steps. The designed GM workflow iteratively learns from molecular metrics, including drug likeliness, synthesizability, similarity, and docking scores. In addition, we also included a hierarchical set of criteria based on advanced molecular modeling simulations during a final selection step. We tested our GM workflow on two model systems, CDK2 and KRAS. In both cases, our model generated chemically viable molecules with a high predicted affinity toward the targets. Particularly, the proportion of high-affinity molecules inferred by our GM workflow was significantly greater than that in the training data. Notably, we also uncovered novel scaffolds significantly dissimilar to those known for each target. These results highlight the potential of our GM workflow to explore novel chemical space for specific targets, thereby opening up new possibilities for drug discovery endeavors.

Context: The first stars produced the first heavy elements and set the stage for the formation of the first galaxies. Accurate chemical abundances of ultra metal-poor stars ([Fe/H]<-4) can be used to infer properties of the first stars, and thus the formation mechanism for low-mass second generation stars in the early universe. Spectroscopic studies have shown that most second generation stars are carbon-enhanced with one notable exception SDSS J102915.14+172927.9. Aims: We reanalyse the composition of SDSS J102915.14+172927.9. Methods: We developed a tailored 3D model atmosphere for SDSS J102915.14+172927.9 with the Stagger-code, making use of an improved surface gravity estimate based on the Gaia DR3 parallax. This model was used as input in the radiative transfer code Balder to compute 3D non-LTE synthetic spectra. These spectra were then used to infer abundances for Mg, Si, Ca, Fe and Ni, and upper limits on Li, Na and Al. 3D LTE synthetic spectra were computed with Scate to infer the abundance of Ti and upper limits on C and N. Results: In contrast to earlier works based on 1D non-LTE corrections to 3D LTE results, we are able to achieve ionisation balance for Ca I and Ca II when employing our consistent 3D non-LTE treatment. Moreover, the elemental abundances are systematically higher than those found in earlier works. In particular, [Fe/H] increases by 0.57 dex, and the upper limits of C and N increase by 0.90 dex and 1.82 dex, respectively. Conclusions: We find that Population III progenitors with masses 10-20 M_sun exploding with energy E<=3*10^{51} erg can reproduce our 3D non-LTE abundance pattern. Contrary to previous work, we obtain higher upper limits on the carbon abundance that are ``marginally consistent'' with star formation through atomic line cooling, and as such, prevent strong conclusions about the formation mechanism of this low mass star.

Stellar granulation generates fluctuations in photometric and spectroscopic data whose properties depend on the stellar type, composition, and evolutionary state. In this study, we aim to detect the signatures of stellar granulation, link spectroscopic and photometric signatures of convection for main-sequence stars, and test predictions from 3D hydrodynamic models. For the first time, we observed two bright stars (Teff = 5833 K and 6205 K) with high-precision observations taken simultaneously with CHEOPS and ESPRESSO. We analyzed the properties of the stellar granulation signal in each individual data set. We compared them to Kepler observations and 3D hydrodynamic models. While isolating the granulation-induced changes by attenuating the p-mode oscillation signals, we studied the relationship between photometric and spectroscopic observables. The signature of stellar granulation is detected and precisely characterized for the hotter F star in the CHEOPS and ESPRESSO observations. For the cooler G star, we obtain a clear detection in the CHEOPS dataset only. The TESS observations are blind to this stellar signal. Based on CHEOPS observations, we show that the inferred properties of stellar granulation are in agreement with both Kepler observations and hydrodynamic models. Comparing their periodograms, we observe a strong link between spectroscopic and photometric observables. Correlations of this stellar signal in the time domain (flux vs RV) and with specific spectroscopic observables (shape of the cross-correlation functions) are however difficult to isolate due to signal-to-noise dependent variations. In the context of the upcoming PLATO mission and the extreme precision RV surveys, a thorough understanding of the properties of the stellar granulation signal is needed. The CHEOPS and ESPRESSO observations pave the way for detailed analyses of this stellar process.

High-precision photometric data from space missions have improved our understanding of stellar granulation. These observations have shown with precision the stochastic brightness fluctuations of stars across the HR diagram, allowing us to better understand how stellar surface convection reacts to a change in stellar parameters. These fluctuations need to be understood and quantified in order to improve the detection and characterization of exoplanets. In this work, we provide new scaling relations of two characteristic properties of the brightness fluctuations time series, the standard deviation ($σ$) and the auto-correlation time ($τ\rm_{eff}$). This was done by using long time series of 3D stellar atmosphere models at different metallicities and across the HR diagram, generated with a 3D radiative hydrodynamical code: the STAGGER code. We compared our synthetic granulation properties with the values of a large sample of Kepler stars, and analyzed selected stars with accurate stellar parameters from the Kepler LEGACY sample. Our 3D models showed that $σ\proptoν\rm_{max}^{-0.567\pm0.012}$ and $τ\rm_{eff}\proptoν\rm_{max}^{-0.997\pm0.018}$ for stars at solar metallicity. We showed that both $σ$ and $τ\rm_{eff}$ decrease with metallicity, although the metallicity dependence is more significant on $σ$. Unlike previous studies, we found very good agreement between $σ$ from Kepler targets and the 3D models at $\log{g}\leq3.5$, and a good correlation between the stars and models with $\log{g}\geq3.5$. For $τ\rm_{eff}$, we found that the 3D models reproduced well the Kepler LEGACY star values. Overall, this study shows that 3D stellar atmosphere models reproduce the granulation properties of stars across the HR diagram.

Abstract:
We apply Ohi's criterion for faithfully flatness of extensions of commutative rings to prove that any étale extension $k[Y_1, \ldots, Y_n]\subseteq k[X_1, \ldots, X_n]$ of polynomial rings (each in $n$ indeterminates) over a commutative ring $k$ is faithfully flat. In particular, if $k$ is an algebraically closed field then any étale polynomial map $k^{n} \to k^{n}$ is surjective.

Under generic properties, we show that if the saddle is homoclinically related to a blender then the diffeomorphism $f$ can be {$C^r$} approximated by diffeomorphisms with {$C^1$} robust heterodimensional cycles. As an application, we show that the classic Simon-Asaoka's examples of diffeomorphisms with $C^1$ robust homoclinic tangencies also display {$C^1$} robust heterodimensional cycles. In a second application, we consider homoclinic tangencies associated to hyperbolic sets. When the entropy of these sets is large enough we obtain $C^1$ robust cycles after $C^1$ perturbations.

The photon polarization in $b \to s γ$ transitions is measured for the first time in radiative b-baryon decays exploiting the unique spin structure of $Λ_b \to Λγ$ decays. A data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $6\;fb^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment in $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $13\;TeV$ is used. The photon polarization is measured to be $α_γ= 0.82^{\,+\,0.17\,+\,0.04}_{\,-\,0.26\,-\,0.13}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This result is in agreement with the Standard Model prediction and previous measurements in b-meson decays. Charge-parity breaking effects are studied for the first time in this observable and found to be consistent with $CP$ symmetry.

We introduce the SAPP (Stellar Abundances and atmospheric Parameters Pipeline), the prototype of the code that will be used to determine parameters of stars observed within the core program of the PLATO space mission. The pipeline is based on the Bayesian inference and provides effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity, chemical abundances, and luminosity. The code in its more general version can have a much wider range of applications. It can also provide masses, ages, and radii of stars and can be used for stars of stellar types not targeted by the PLATO core program, such as red giants. We validate the code on a set of 27 benchmark stars that includes 19 FGK-type dwarfs, 6 GK-type sub-giants, and 2 red giants. Our results suggest that combining various observables is the optimal approach, as it allows to break degeneracies between different parameters and yields more accurate values of stellar parameters and more realistic uncertainties. For the PLATO core sample, we obtain a typical uncertainty of 27 ($\rm{syst.}$) $\pm$ 37 ($\rm{stat.}$) K for T$_{\rm{eff}}$, 0.00 $\pm$ 0.01 dex for log$g$, 0.02 $\pm$ 0.02 dex for metallicity [Fe/H], -0.01 $\pm$ 0.03 R$_\odot$ for radii, -0.01 $\pm$ 0.05 M$_\odot$ for stellar masses, and -0.14 $\pm$ 0.63 Gyrs for ages. We also show that the best results are obtained by combining the $ν_{max}$ scaling relation and stellar spectra. This resolves the notorious problem of degeneracies, which is particularly important for F-type stars.

The possibility of extending the canonical formulation of quantum mechanics (QM) to a space-time symmetric form has recently attracted wide interest. In this context, a recent proposal has shown that a spacetime symmetric many-body extension of the Page and Wootters mechanism naturally leads to the so-called Quantum Action (QA) operator, a quantum version of the action of classical mechanics. In this work, we focus on connecting the QA with the well-established Feynman's Path Integral (PI). In particular, we present a novel formalism which allows one to identify the "sum over histories" with a quantum trace, where the role of the classical action is replaced by the corresponding QA. The trace is defined in the extended Hilbert space resulting from assigning a conventional Hilbert space to each time slice and then taking their tensor product. The formalism opens the way to the application of quantum computation protocols to the evaluation of PIs and general correlation functions, and reveals that different representations of the PI arise from distinct choices of basis in the evaluation of the same trace expression. The Hilbert space embedding of the PIs also discloses a new approach to their continuum time limit. Finally, we discuss how the ensuing canonical-like version of QM inherits many properties from the PI formulation, thus allowing an explicitly covariant treatment of spacetime symmetries.

When a cylindrical object penetrates granular matter near a vertical boundary, it experiences two effects: its center of mass moves horizontally away from the wall, and it rotates around its symmetry axis. Here we show experimentally that, if two identical intruders instead of one are released side-by-side near the wall, both effects are also detected. However, unexpected phenomena appear due to a cooperative dynamics between the intruders. The net horizontal distance traveled by the common center of mass of the twin intruders is much larger than that traveled by one intruder released at the same initial distance from the wall, and the rotation is also larger. The experimental results are well described by the Discrete Element Method, which reveals a further unexpected phenomenon: when four intruders are released as a column near a wall, they penetrate like a chain that "bends away" from the wall so its lower end is very strongly repelled away from it.

In the first, a Higgs-like boson with mass from 30 to 200 GeV is produced by gluon fusion and decays into two LLPs. The analysis covers LLP mass values from 10 GeV up to about one half the Higgs-like boson mass. The second LLP production mode is directly from quark interactions, with LLP masses from 10 to 90 GeV. The LLP lifetimes considered range from 5 to 200 ps. This study uses LHCb data collected from proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 1/fb. No evidence of these long-lived states has been observed, and upper limits on the production cross-section times branching ratio have been set for each model considered.

Two narrow resonant states are observed in the ${\itΛ}_b^0 K^-π^+$ mass spectrum using a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13$~\rm TeV$, collected by the LHCb experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $6~{\rm fb}^{-1}$. The minimal quark content of the ${\itΛ}_b^0 K^-π^+$ system indicates that these are excited ${\itΞ}_b^0$ baryons. The masses of the ${\itΞ}_b(6327)^0$ and ${\itΞ}_b(6333)^0$ states are $m({\itΞ}_b(6327)^0) = 6327.28 ^{\,+\,0.23}_{\,-\,0.21} \pm 0.12 \pm 0.24~{\rm MeV}$ and $m({\itΞ}_b(6333)^0) = 6332.69 ^{\,+\,0.17}_{\,-\,0.18} \pm 0.03 \pm 0.22~{\rm MeV}$, respectively, with a mass splitting of $Δm = 5.41 ^{\,+\,0.26}_{\,-\,0.27} \pm 0.12 ~{\rm MeV}$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and due to the ${\itΛ}_b^0$ mass measurement. The measured natural widths of these states are consistent with zero, with upper limits of $Γ({\itΞ}_b(6327)^0)<2.20~(2.56) ~{\rm MeV}$ and $Γ({\itΞ}_b(6333)^0)<1.60~(1.92) ~{\rm MeV}$ at a $90\%~(95\%)$ credibility level. The significance of the two-peak hypothesis is larger than nine (five) Gaussian standard deviations compared to the no-peak (one-peak) hypothesis. The masses, widths and resonant structure of the new states are in good agreement with the expectations for a doublet of 1$D$ ${\itΞ}_b^0$ resonances.

The charm mixing parameters are determined to be $x = (0.400^{\,+0.052}_{\,-0.053})\%$ and $y = (0.630^{\,+0.033}_{\,-0.030})\%$. The angle $γ$ is found to be $γ= (65.4^{\,+3.8}_{\,-4.2})^\circ$ and is the most precise determination from a single experiment.

The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $6 \, {\rm fb}^{-1}$ collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the LHCb detector. In events with a $Z$ boson and a jet, the fraction of charm jets is determined in intervals of $Z$-boson rapidity in the range $2.0 < y(Z) < 4.5$. A sizable enhancement is observed in the forward-most $y(Z)$ interval, which could be indicative of a valence-like intrinsic-charm component in the proton wave function.

The two mesons are reconstructed in the $J/ψπ^{+}π^{-}$ final state. The ratios of the prompt and nonprompt $χ_{c1}(3872)$ to $ψ(2S)$ production cross-sections are measured as a function of transverse momentum, $p_{\rm T}$, and rapidity, $y$, in the kinematic range $4 < p_{\rm T} < 20$ GeV/$c$ and $2.0 < y < 4.5$. The prompt ratio is found to increase with $p_{\rm T}$ independently of $y$. The double-differential cross-section ratio of $χ_{c1}(3872)$ relative to $ψ(2S)$ mesons between 13 and 8 TeV is also measured for the prompt component and observed to be consistent with unity, independent of $p_{\rm T}$ and centre-of-mass energy.

The study uses proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13$\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}$, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 5.4$\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. No significant signal is observed in the invariant-mass range of 3.4$-$3.8$\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c^2$. Upper limits are set on the ratio of branching fractions multiplied by the production cross-section with respect to the $\itΞ_{cc}^{++} \rightarrow (\itΞ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow p K^{-} π^{+}) π^{+}$ decay for different $\itΞ_{cc}^{+}$ mass and lifetime hypotheses in the rapidity range from 2.0 to 4.5 and the transverse momentum range from 2.5 to 25$\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c$. The results from this search are combined with a previously published search for the $\itΞ_{cc}^{+} \rightarrow \itΛ_{c}^{+} K^{-} π^{+}$ decay mode, yielding a maximum local significance of 4.0 standard deviations around the mass of 3620$\mathrm{\,Me\kern -0.1em V}/c^2$, including systematic uncertainties. Taking into account the look-elsewhere effect in the 3.5$-$3.7$\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c^2$ mass window, the combined global significance is 2.9 standard deviations including systematic uncertainties.

The $Ω^{0}_{c}$ and $Ξ^{0}_{c}$ baryons are produced directly from proton interactions and reconstructed in the $pK^{-}K^{-}π^{+}$ final state. The $Ω^{0}_{c}$ lifetime is measured to be $276.5\pm13.4\pm4.4\pm0.7\text{ fs}$, and the $Ξ^{0}_{c}$ lifetime is measured to be $148.0\pm2.3\pm2.2\pm0.2\text{ fs}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to the uncertainty on the $D^{0}$ lifetime. These results confirm previous LHCb measurements based on semileptonic beauty-hadron decays, which disagree with earlier results of a four times shorter $Ω^{0}_{c}$ lifetime, and provide the single most precise measurement of the $Ω^{0}_{c}$ lifetime.

With a simultaneous fit of the muon $q/p_T$ distribution of a sample of $W \to μν$ decays and the $φ^*$ distribution of a sample of $Z\toμμ$ decays the $W$ boson mass is determined to be \begin{equation*} m_{W} = 80354 \pm 23_{\rm stat} \pm 10_{\rm exp} \pm 17_{\rm theory} \pm 9_{\rm PDF}~\mathrm{MeV}, \end{equation*} where uncertainties correspond to contributions from statistical, experimental systematic, theoretical and parton distribution function sources. This is an average of results based on three recent global parton distribution function sets. The measurement agrees well with the prediction of the global electroweak fit and with previous measurements.

An exotic narrow state in the $D^0D^0π^+$ mass spectrum just below the $D^{*+}D^0$ mass threshold is studied using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$ acquired with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The state is consistent with the ground isoscalar $T^+_{cc}$ tetraquark with a quark content of $cc\bar{u}\bar{d}$ and spin-parity quantum numbers $\mathrm{J}^{\mathrm{P}}=1^+$. Study of the $DD$ mass spectra disfavours interpretation of the resonance as the isovector state. The decay structure via intermediate off-shell $D^{*+}$ mesons is confirmed by the $D^0π^+$ mass distribution. The mass of the resonance and its coupling to the $D^{*}D$ system are analysed. Resonance parameters including the pole position, scattering length, effective range and compositeness are measured to reveal important information about the nature of the $T^+_{cc}$ state. In addition, an unexpected dependence of the production rate on track multiplicity is observed.

The cross-sections are measured differentially as a function of transverse momentum, $p_{\text{T}}$, and rapidity, $y$, and separately for $J/ψ$ mesons produced promptly and from beauty hadron decays (nonprompt). With the assumption of unpolarised $J/ψ$ mesons, the production cross-sections integrated over the kinematic range $0<p_{\text{T}}<20~\text{GeV}/c$ and $2.0<y<4.5$ are $8.154\pm0.010\pm0.283~μ\text{b}$ for prompt $J/ψ$ mesons and $0.820\pm0.003\pm0.034~μ\text{b}$ for nonprompt $J/ψ$ mesons, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These cross-sections are compared with those at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV and $13$ TeV, and are used to update the measurement of the nuclear modification factor in proton-lead collisions for $J/ψ$ mesons at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}=5$ TeV. The results are compared with theoretical predictions.

The production of prompt charged particles in proton-lead collisions and in proton-proton collisions at the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy ${\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle\mathrm{NN}}}=5\,\mathrm{TeV}}$ is studied at LHCb as a function of pseudorapidity ($η$) and transverse momentum ($p_{\mathrm{T}}$) with respect to the proton beam direction. The nuclear modification factor for charged particles is determined as a function of $η$ between ${-4.8<η<-2.5}$ (backward region) and ${2.0<η<4.8}$ (forward region), and $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ between ${0.2<p_{\mathrm{T}}<8.0\,\mathrm{GeV}/c}$. The results show a suppression of charged particle production in proton-lead collisions relative to proton-proton collisions in the forward region and an enhancement in the backward region for $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ larger than $1.5\,\mathrm{GeV}/c$. This measurement constrains nuclear PDFs and saturation models at previously unexplored values of the parton momentum fraction down to $10^{-6}$.

The branching fraction ${\mathcal{B}}(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=\left(3.09^{+0.46+0.15}_{-0.43-0.11}\right)\times 10^{-9}$ and the effective lifetime $τ(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=(2.07\pm 0.29\pm 0.03)$ are measured, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. Abstract:
An improved measurement of the decay $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ and searches for the decays $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ$ are performed at the LHCb experiment using data collected in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7,~8$ and $13$ TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1, 2 and 6 fb$^{-1}$, respectively. The $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ branching fraction and effective lifetime are measured to be ${\mathcal{B}}(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=\left(3.09^{+0.46+0.15}_{-0.43-0.11}\right)\times 10^{-9}$ and $τ(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=(2.07\pm 0.29\pm 0.03)$ ps, respectively, where the uncertainties include both statistical and systematic contributions. No significant signal for $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ$ decays is found and the upper limits $\mathcal{B}(B^0\toμ^+μ^-)<2.6\times 10^{-10}$ and $\mathcal{B}(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ)<2.0\times 10^{-9}$ at 95% confidence level are determined, where the latter is limited to the range $m_{μμ} > 4.9$ GeV$/c^2$. Additionally, the ratio between the $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ branching fractions is measured to be $\mathcal{R}_{μ^+μ^-}<0.095$ at 95% confidence level. The results are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions.

Abstract:
The first search for the rare radiative decay $Ξ_b^- \to Ξ^- γ$ is performed using data collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb$^{-1}$. The $Ξ_b- \to Ξ^- J/ψ$ channel is used as normalization. No $Ξ_b^- \to Ξ^- γ$ signal is found and an upper limit of…

The observables describing the angular distributions of the decay $B^0_s\rightarrowφμ^+μ^-$ are determined in regions of $q^2$, the square of the dimuon invariant mass. The results are consistent with Standard Model predictions.
