In 1911, Jüttner proposed the generalization, for a relativistic gas, of the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution of velocities. Here we want to discuss, among others, Jüttner probability density function (PDF). Both the velocity space and, consequently, the momentum space are not flat in special relativity. The velocity space corresponds to the Lobachevsky one, which has a negative curvature. This curvature induces a specific power for the Lorentz factor in the PDF, affecting Jüttner normalization constant in one, two, and three dimensions. Furthermore, Jüttner distribution, written in terms of a more convenient variable, the rapidity, presents a curvature change at the origin at sufficiently high energy, which does not agree with our computational dynamics simulations of a relativistic gas. However, in one dimension, the rapidity satisfies a simple additivity law. This allows us to obtain, through the Central Limit Theorem, a new, Lorentz-invariant, PDF whose curvature at the origin does not change for any energy value and which agrees with our computational dynamics simulations data. Also, we perform extensive first-principle simulations of a one-dimensional relativistic gas constituted by light and heavy particles.

The crossover among two or more types of diffusive processes represents a vibrant theme in nonequilibrium statistical physics. In this work we propose two models to generate crossovers among different Lévy processes: in the first model we change gradually the order of the derivative in the Laplacian term of the diffusion equation, whereas in the second one we consider a combination of fractional-derivative diffusive terms characterized by coefficients that change in time.
The proposals are illustrated by considering semi-analytical (i.e., analytical together with numerical) procedures to follow the time-dependent solutions. We find changes between two different regimes and it is shown that, far from the crossover regime, both models yield qualitatively similar results, although these changes may occur in different forms for the two models. The models introduced herein are expected to be useful for describing crossovers among distinct diffusive regimes that occur frequently in complex systems.

We propose a generalized su(2) algebra that perfectly describes the discrete energy part of the Morse potential. Then, we examine particular examples and the approach can be applied to any Morse oscillator and to practically any physical system whose spectrum is finite. Further, we construct the Klauder coherent state for Morse potential satisfying the resolution of identity with a positive measure, obtained through the solution of truncated Stieltjes moment problem. The time evolution of the uncertainty relation of the constructed coherent states is analyzed. The uncertainty relation is more localized for small values of radius of convergence.

Recent works have associated systems of particles, characterized by short-range repulsive interactions and evolving under overdamped motion, to a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation within the class of nonextensive statistical mechanics, with a nonlinear diffusion contribution whose exponent is given by $ν=2-q$. The particular case $ν=2$ applies to interacting vortices in type-II superconductors, whereas $ν>2$ covers systems of particles characterized by short-range power-law interactions, where correlations among particles are taken into account. In the former case, several studies presented a consistent thermodynamic framework based on the definition of an effective temperature $θ$ (presenting experimental values much higher than typical room temperatures $T$, so that thermal noise could be neglected), conjugated to a generalized entropy $s_ν$ (with $ν=2$). Herein, the whole thermodynamic scheme is revisited and extended to systems of particles interacting repulsively, through short-ranged potentials, described by an entropy $s_ν$, with $ν>1$, covering the $ν=2$ (vortices in type-II superconductors) and $ν>2$ (short-range power-law interactions) physical examples. The main results achieved are: (a) The definition of an effective temperature $θ$ conjugated to the entropy $s_ν$; (b) The construction of a Carnot cycle, whose efficiency is shown to be $η=1-(θ_2/θ_1)$, where $θ_1$ and $θ_2$ are the effective temperatures associated with two isothermal transformations, with $θ_1>θ_2$; (c) Thermodynamic potentials, Maxwell relations, and response functions. The present thermodynamic framework, for a system of interacting particles under the above-mentioned conditions, and associated to an entropy $s_ν$, with $ν>1$, certainly enlarges the possibility of experimental verifications.

The aim of the present paper is to introduce and to discuss the most basic fundamental concepts of quantum physics by means of a simple and pedagogical example. An appreciable part of its content presents original results. We start with the Euclidean plane which is certainly a paradigmatic example of a Hilbert space. The pure states form the unit circle (actually a half of it), the mixed states form the unit disk (actually a half of it), and rotations in the plane rule time evolution through Majorana-like equations involving only real quantities for closed and open systems. The set of pure states or a set of mixed states solve the identity and they are used for understanding the concept of integral quantization of functions on the unit circle and to give a semi-classical portrait of quantum observables. Interesting probabilistic aspects are developed. Since the tensor product of two planes, their direct sum, their cartesian product, are isomorphic (2 is the unique solution to x^x= x\times x = x+x), and they are also isomorphic to C^2, and to the quaternion field H (as a vector space), we describe an interesting relation between entanglement of real states, one-half spin cat states, and unit-norm quaternions which form the group SU$(2)$. We explain the most general form of the Hamiltonian in the real plane by considering the integral quantization of a magnetic-like interaction potential viewed as a classical observable on the unit $2$-sphere. Finally, we present an example of quantum measurement with pointer states lying also in the Euclidean plane.

We analyze a general family of position-dependent mass quantum Hamiltonians which are not self-adjoint and include, as particular cases, some Hamiltonians obtained in phenomenological approaches to condensed matter physics. We build a general family of self-adjoint Hamiltonians which are quantum mechanically equivalent to the non self-adjoint proposed ones. Inspired in the probability density of the problem, we construct an ansatz for the solutions of the family of self-adjoint Hamiltonians. We use this ansatz to map the solutions of the time independent Schrodinger equations generated by the non self-adjoint Hamiltonians into the Hilbert space of the solutions of the respective dual self-adjoint Hamiltonians. This map** depends on both the position-dependent mass and on a function of position satisfying a condition that assures the existence of a consistent continuity equation. We identify the non self-adjoint Hamiltonians here studied to a very general family of Hamiltonians proposed in a seminal article of Harrison [1] to describe varying band structures in different types of metals. Therefore, we have self-adjoint Hamiltonians that correspond to the non self-adjoint ones found in Harrison's article. We analyze three typical cases by choosing a physical position-dependent mass and a deformed harmonic oscillator potential . We completely solve the Schrodinger equations for the three cases; we also find and compare their respective energy levels.

The construction of the entropy $S_{a,b,r}$ is based on a general group-theoretical approach recently proposed by one of us \cite{Tempesta2}. Indeed, essentially all the properties of this new entropy are obtained as a consequence of the existence of a rational group law, which expresses the structure of $S_{a,b,r}$ with respect to the composition of statistically independent subsystems. Depending on the choice of the parameters, the entropy $S_{a,b,r}$ can be used to cover a wide range of physical situations, in which the measure of the accessible phase space increases say exponentially with the number of particles $N$ of the system, or even stabilizes, by increasing $N$, to a limiting value. This paves the way to the use of this entropy in contexts where a system "freezes" some or many of its degrees of freedom by increasing the number of its constituting particles or subsystems.

We derive a Lorentz invariant distribution of velocities for a relativistic gas. Our derivation is based on three pillars: the special theory of relativity, the central limit theorem and the Lobachevskyian structure of the velocity space of the theory. The rapidity variable plays a crucial role in our results. For $v^2/c^2 \ll 1$ and $1/β=kT/2 m_0 c^2 \ll 1$ the distribution tends to the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. The mean $\langle v^2 \rangle$ evaluated with the Lorentz invariant distribution is always smaller than the Maxwell-Boltzmann mean and is bounded by $\langle v^2 \rangle/c^2=1$. This implies that for a given $\langle v^2 \rangle$ the temperature is larger than the temperature estimated using the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. For temperatures of the order of $T \sim {10^{12}}~ K$ and $T \sim {10^{8}}~ K$ the difference is of the order of $10 \%$, respectively for particles with the hydrogen and the electron rest masses.

We show that the comment [arXiv:1104.0697] by Levin and Pakter on our work [arXiv:1008.1421] is conceptually unfounded, contains misleading interpretations, and is based on results of questionable applicability. We initially provide arguments to evince that, inexplicably, these authors simply choose to categorically dismiss our elaborated and solid conceptual approach, results and analysis, without employing any fundamental concepts or tools from Statistical Physics. We then demonstrate that the results of Levin and Pakter do not present any evidence against, but rather corroborates, our conclusions. In fact, the results shown in their comment correspond to a confining potential that is 1000 times stronger than the typical valued utilized in our study, therefore explaining the discrepancy between their results and ours. Furthermore, in this regime where higher vortex densities are involved, vortex cores might get so close to each other that can no longer be treated as point-like defects. As a consequence, Ginzburg-Landau equations should be employed instead, meaning that the physical conditions implied by the results of Levin and Pakter should be considered with caution in the context of the Physics of interacting superconducting vortexes.

We introduce a generalisation of the well-known ARCH process, widely used for generating uncorrelated stochastic time series with long-term non-Gaussian distributions and long-lasting correlations in the (instantaneous) standard deviation exhibiting a clustering profile. Specifically, inspired by the fact that in a variety of systems impacting events are hardly forgot, we split the process into two different regimes: a first one for regular periods where the average volatility of the fluctuations within a certain period of time is below a certain threshold and another one when the local standard deviation outnumbers it. In the former situation we use standard rules for heteroscedastic processes whereas in the latter case the system starts recalling past values that surpassed the threshold. Our results show that for appropriate parameter values the model is able to provide fat tailed probability density functions and strong persistence of the instantaneous variance characterised by large values of the Hurst exponent is greater than 0.8, which are ubiquitous features in complex systems.

We show through a nonlinear Fokker-Planck formalism, and confirm by molecular dynamics simulations, that the overdamped motion of interacting particles at T=0, where T is the temperature of a thermal bath connected to the system, can be directly associated with Tsallis thermostatistics. For sufficiently high values of T, the distribution of particles becomes Gaussian, so that the classical Boltzmann-Gibbs behavior is recovered. For intermediate temperatures of the thermal bath, the system displays a mixed behavior that follows a novel type of thermostatistics, where the entropy is given by a linear combination of Tsallis and Boltzmann-Gibbs entropies.

The Berezin-Klauder-Toeplitz ("anti-Wick") quantization or "non-commutative reading" of the complex plane, viewed as the phase space of a particle moving on the line, is derived from the resolution of the unity provided by the standard (or gaussian) coherent states. The construction properties of these states and their attractive properties are essentially based on the energy spectrum of the harmonic oscillator, that is on the natural numbers. This work is an attempt for following the same path by considering sequences of non-negative numbers which are not "too far" from the natural numbers. In particular, we examine the consequences of such perturbations on the non-commutative reading of the complex plane in terms of its probabilistic, functional, and localization aspects.

Although the GHA and the G-sl(2) algebra exhibit more general algebraic structures than the Heisenberg and sl(2) algebras, the generalised JS map presents a compact and simple structure wich includes the standard JS map as a particular case. Finally, since in the GHA there is a physical interpretation in terms of composite particles, we will carry out this assertion in a manner that the generalised sl(2) algebra could be related to composite particles with angular momentum.

A general type of nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation is derived directly from a master equation, by introducing generalized transition rates. The H-theorem is demonstrated for systems that follow those classes of nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations, in the presence of an external potential. For that, a relation involving terms of Fokker-Planck equations and general entropic forms is proposed. It is shown that, at equilibrium, this relation is equivalent to the maximum-entropy principle. Families of Fokker-Planck equations may be related to a single type of entropy, and so, the correspondence between well-known entropic forms and their associated Fokker-Planck equations is explored. It is shown that the Boltzmann-Gibbs entropy, apart from its connection with the standard -- linear Fokker-Planck equation -- may be also related to a family of nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations.

A recently introduced nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation, derived directly from a master equation, comes out as a very general tool to describe phenomenologically systems presenting complex behavior, like anomalous diffusion, in the presence of external forces. Such an equation is characterized by a nonlinear diffusion term that may present, in general, two distinct powers of the probability distribution. Herein, we calculate the stationary-state distributions of this equation in some special cases, and introduce associated classes of generalized entropies in order to satisfy the H-theorem. Within this approach, the parameters associated with the transition rates of the original master-equation are related to such generalized entropies, and are shown to obey some restrictions. Some particular cases are discussed.

When these two functions are linear we classify, analysing the stability of the fixed points of the functions, the possible representations for this algebra.

The q-state ferromagnetic Potts model under a non-zero magnetic field coupled with the 0^th Potts state was investigated by an exact real-space renormalization group approach. The model was defined on a family of diamond hierarchical lattices of several fractal dimensions d_F. On these lattices, the renormalization group transformations became exact for such a model when a correlation coupling that singles out the 0^th Potts state was included in the Hamiltonian. The rich criticality presented by the model with q=3 and d_F=2 was fully analyzed. Apart from the Potts criticality for the zero field, an Ising-like phase transition was found whenever the system was submitted to a strong reverse magnetic field. Unusual characteristics such as cusps and dimensional reduction were observed on the critical surface.

The dynamics of the approach to equilibrium of the hydrogen atom is investigated numerically through a Monte Carlo procedure. We show that, before approaching ionization, the hydrogen atom may live in a quasi-equilibrium state, characterized by aging, whose duration increases exponentially as the temperatures decreases. By analyzing the quasi-equilibrium state, we compute averages of physical quantities for the hydrogen atom. We have introduced an analytic approach that fits satisfactorily the numerical estimates for low temperatures. Although the present analysis is expected to hold for energies typically up to 6% of the ionization energy, it works well for temperatures as high as 10^{4} K.

We present a generalization of the sl(2) algebra where the algebraic relations are constructed with the help of a general function of one of the generators. When this function is linear this algebra is a deformed sl(2) algebra. In the non-linear case, the finite dimensional representations are constructed in two different ways. In the first case, which provides finite dimensional representations only for the non-linear case, these representations come from solutions to a dynamical equation and we show how to construct explicitly these representations for a general quadratic non-linear function. The other type of finite dimensional representation comes from solutions to a cut condition equation. We give examples of solutions of this type in the non-linear case as well.

The case where $f$ is a polynomial of order $n$ in $J_0$ corresponds to a $n$-parameter deformed Heisenberg algebra. The representations of the algebra, when $f$ is any analytical function, are shown to be obtained through the study of the stability of the fixed points of $f$ and their composed functions. The case when $f$ is a quadratic polynomial in $J_0$, the simplest non-linear scheme which is able to create chaotic behavior, is analyzed in detail and special regions in the parameter space give representations that cannot be continuously deformed to representations of Heisenberg algebra.

The multifractal properties of the Edwards-Anderson order parameter of the short-range Ising spin glass model on d=3 diamond hierarchical lattices is studied via an exact recursion procedure. The profiles of the local order parameter are calculated and analysed within a range of temperatures close to the critical point with four symmetric distributions of the coupling constants (Gaussian, Bimodal, Uniform and Exponential). Unlike the pure case, the multifractal analysis of these profiles reveals that a large spectrum of the $α$-Hölder exponent is required to describe the singularities of the measure defined by the normalized local order parameter, at and below the critical point. Minor changes in these spectra are observed for distinct initial distributions of coupling constants, suggesting an universal spectra behavior. For temperatures slightly above T_{c}, a dramatic change in the $F(α)$ function is found, signalizing the transition.
